Major Upgrade Planned For Swords Library Managing Director of JC's Supermarket, Michael Savage, is pictured outside Swords Library.

A planning application for a major new development at Rathbeale Library in Swords, has been submitted by the owners, JC’s Supermarket, which includes refurbishment and renovation of the existing library. By Patrick Finnegan It is proposed to construct a new two storey extension to the front of the existing library building, to include a café/restaurant, as well as meeting rooms, cultural centre and multipurpose spaces. The application is for the refurbishment and renovation of the existing ground floor library (413 sq,m). Also included is the construction of a 1st floor extension (413 sq.m) above the existing building, to provide a cultural

facility/exhibition centre, which will include meeting rooms and multipurpose spaces. The plan also includes the construction of a two storey extension to the front of the existing library building, to provide a cafe/restaurant unit (262 sq.m) over two levels, within a glazed atrium space. The development also includes the provision of lifts, stair cores and all ancillary,

drainage and landscaping works. The planning application has been submitted to the County Council for permission to carry out the works, which are expected to have a major impact on the community locally. The library’s lease is up for renewal in about two years time, and the Council are now looking at all options at the moment, including whether to relocate to County Hall, or some other location. The County Leader spoke to JC’s Managing Director, Michael Savage, who was very excited about the new development, and we asked him what it will include. He said, “We are hoping

to keep the library on as a tenant, as they have been with us for over 30 years now. My late father, JC Savage had said on numerous occasions, that bringing in the library was one of the best things he ever did. It is a vital part of the community. We would love to keep the library here, and we are prepared to do what we can to keep them here. That is partly why we would love to invest in the quality of building that we’re hoping to put in,” he said. “We believe we can offer them an excellent civic building. I was very inspired by the library in Blanchardstown, which provides excellent facilities, and is a

great asset in the area. We propose to have a cultural section, where items of local cultural interest can be displayed. I’m convinced that this would be great for the people of Swords, where people could drop in and use the ultra modern computer facilities in the library, which would be a great place for students to study. We also propose to have a coffee shop, which would be a facility we have not had in the centre up to now, as well as meeting rooms, which can also be used for training purposes. However, the decision to stay will be entirely up to the Council to make, but we earnestly hope that they decide to stay,” he said.

Molly Prepares For Transplant Operation

Little Molly is pictured with Dubs star, Bernard Brogan, who paid a special visit to her, before she left to go to hospital for her transplant operation

Little Molly McNally, the six year old Balbriggan girl, is in the process of preparing for her bone marrow transplant. Last Friday, she attended her school in Balscadden, where a party was held in her honour. Molly’s father Gerry McNally told the County Leader about the scale of the battle that awaits little Molly in the coming few months. “Last Sunday, Molly went for her transplant to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. This is the first time that we are feeling nervous, even though Molly is such a great fighter,” said Gerry. The first week in Crumlin includes a full week of high dosage chemotherapy. There will be a total of 16 rounds of chemotherapy in just five days, which is more than she had in the first three months,: he said. The purpose of this, is to kill all red and white

blood cells and wipe out her immune system. She started her chemo yesterday (Monday) and next Monday, they will give her back her stem cells, which they previously banked. This is the start of the transplant process, which we all pray will be a success. Gerry continued, “After this, there is a seven to 10 day period to see if the white cells return. These are the ones that fight infection. Depending on how quickly the white cells develop, will determine the length of time she will be in isolation. This is a very dangerous time, due to the possibility of infection setting in, which will slow everything down, and prolong her time in hospital. “In an ideal world, if it went well and went according to plan, Molly could be out of hospital in five weeks maybe,” her dad said. However, Gerry and Emma have the utmost

confidence in Crumlin’s record in this kind of procedure. “Their record in doing this transplant is second to none, even on a worldwide level, and this gives us great confidence and hope. I’d rather see Molly in Crumlin than in any hospital in the US, such is our faith in them,” he said. Meanwhile, fundraising projects continue, and it is hoped that people will continue their great support for this brave little warrior. Next up on Saturday, 31st January, Balbriggan Social Network will hold a RIG reunion in O’Shea’s pub in Balbriggan, which sounds like good fun. Also on the same night, Clontarf Rugby Club are hosting a ‘Return to the Cricket’ evening, which will revive happy memories for thousands of people who went there on a Saturday nights. Memories of the Four Keys come to mind. It sounds like a night not to be missed for many, and it goes a long way to helping Molly.

Local Playwright Calls For Swords Theatre Promising up and coming Swords playwright, David Gilna, is beginning to get noticed in theatre circles, after a succession of critically acclaimed plays, He started his career at the National Performing Arts School (NPAS), where he recently returned to showcase his new play ‘My Bedsit Window.’ He is also an accomplished actor, who has appeared in a number

of productions. The County Leader spoke to the energetic 30 year-old Swords man, and asked him about how he sees his future, and his hopes for a theatre for Swords. “It’s a passion of mine to see a theatre in Swords. I was involved with the Axis Theatre in Ballymun, and what that centre did for the local community and for the arts there, is incredible.

The local Malahide Parkrun group recently had a meeting with the County Council. According to the Council, there have been legitimate complaints from the visitor centre about park runners cleaning their runners and gear in the visitor centre toilets, and leaving the sinks and cubicles in a bad state. The Council are insisting, rightly, that the group ensure this doesn’t happen again. This will involve some of the organisers ‘policing’ the Visitor Centre toilets to make

Response From Aer Lingus Expected Soon Aer Lingus has confirmed it has received an improved takeover offer from British Airways parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG). In a brief statement, Aer Lingus said it had received an offer of €2.55 per share and that its board was considering the revised proposal. At the time of going to press, there was no indication that the Board of Aer Lingus were about to recommend acceptance of the offer to it’s shareholders but a response is expected soon. Early indications are that the Government will meet during the week, to see what benefit will accrue from the new, improved offer.

The bid comprised an all cash offer of €2.50 per share and a cash dividend of 5 cent per share and that it remained conditional on the recommendation of the board and receipt of irrevocable commitments from Ryanair and the Government, its two largest shareholders. A statement from the board was expected to be issued yesterday (Monday). The bid values Aer Lingus at around €1.3 billion, with the dividend worth an additional €26m. If the deal goes ahead at that price the Government, which

has a 25 per cent stake in the airline, would receive around €308.6 million. Discussions are said to have taken place over the weekend to decide if the offer by IAG should be accepted. Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe said the Government would give careful consideration to any takeover for Aer Lingus. However, he said that international access, including Aer Lingus slots in Heathrow, will be crucial in any evaluation of a bid by the Government. However, CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary downplayed the importance of the of the Heathrow slots, saying that there’s a “national obsession” about the perceived importance of London’s Heathrow Airport that is “entirely misplaced.” SIPTU and IMPACT unions have said they are concerned for the security of jobs at the airline, should the takeover occur.

Skerries Recognised For Its Age Friendly Town Initiative

at

The town of Skerries was recently recognised for its innovative and creative efforts for making the area a great place to grow old. At a special ceremony held last week, Skerries was one of seven to win a Age Friendly Environment Award for their Age Friendly Town Initiative, set up last year. When the initiative was first set up, Skerries received its certificate of recognition, having completed the Age Friendly Town Process. The County Council, in association with the Ageing Well Network, selected Skerries as the town in which to pilot the Age Friendly Town process in the North County. Skerries was selected to address the aspiration of the Skerries Community Development Association and the Skerries Tidy Towns, to make the town a better place in which to live, work and grow old. An Age Friendly Town is a town where the community understands and responds to the needs of older people. It is created by consulting, building and implementing a plan

with the community to make their town age friendly. It uses the methodologies of the Age Friendly County programme, focusing on the selected town, to significantly improve the quality of life of older adults living in the area and to engage them in shaping and enhancing their own communities. As part of the Age Friendly Town process, a number of actions were undertaken in the town including, walkability surveys, consultation days with older adults and service providers and an audit of signage in the town. In addition, the Skerries Chamber of Commerce and Prosper Fingal Piercetown undertook to participate in the Business of Ageing programme, which was rolled out in the town. Skerries was presented with a certificate on the day, and County Mayor, Councillor Mags Murray attended the event. Volunteers Needed For Swords Meals On Wheels The Swords Meals On Wheels group are urgently seeking volunteer co-ordinators and drivers to assist in the running of the group and the distribution of meals. The co-ordinators are needed to oversee the smooth running of all the different routes, and more drivers are needed to ensure the delivery of meals. The group can deliver as much as 80 meals per day to those who need them around the Swords area. “We really are struggling, and in desperate need of help, committee member Tom told the County Leader. “Ideally, we would need a co-ordinator to work just over three hours a day, but it can be less, and it doesn’t have to be every day, it can be what works for the individual,” he explained.

Swords Man Creates Educational App For Children A local entrepreneur and recent mechanical engineering college graduate from Swords, Gavin Hughes, has created the world’s first colouring book app for children about climate change and renewable energy. The app is now available free on iPad devices through the Apple App Store. The ‘Green World Colouring App’ introduces global warming and renewable energy in a fun, accessible way for children,” he explained. “The different sources of renewable energy are introduced including wind, water, geothermal, solar and bioenergy. A short

educational message accompanies each colouring page explaining the underlying concepts. Lastly, a number of useful tips are provided to encourage children to use less electricity on a daily basis. After each page is coloured it is possible to print directly from the app or the image can be saved and easily shared online,” he said. “We need to raise awareness, as it will be our children who will be voting and driving policy on these crucial issues in the future.” said Gavin, explaining the idea behind the app. We also need future leaders who are brave, ambitious and passionate enough

First Civilians To Work In Passport Control In a major departure from the norm, civilians will now be used as immigration officers, instead of members of the Gardai, in an effort to reduce queues at passport control at Dublin Airport. Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald has just appointed 42 civilian immigration officers

at the airport, which is designed to free up garda resources, to focus on community policing. It will also go a long way to reducing the lengthening queues at passport control at the airport. It is planned to have the airport’s border control run entirely by civilians by the end of the year.

05

The 42 new recruits will join the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service of the Department of Justice and Equality, where they will commence training, before being assigned to Dublin Airport. The minister has earmarked the civilianisation of passport control as a key objective and the first recruitment phase is regarded as a major milestone. It is expected that more civilians will be appointed as immigration officers in the coming months.

Permission Granted For Mantua Park Development The County Council Planning Department have granted planning permission for 28 residential units on the site of the old Mantua Park Caravan Park in Swords. This new development, which was reported by this newspaper last July, was a cause of great concern for residents in the adjoining estate of Seatown Villas, the oldest estate in Swords. However, the Council has ordered that the existing fence between the two estates will be retained, and this is something that was of great comfort to the residents of Seatown Villas. Councillor Darragh Butler (FF) said, “The fact that the existing fence is being retained, is great news for the residents of Seatown Villas, and is the result of the many submissions presented to the Council. I am happy that the voices of the residents have been heard, and the fence is being retained,” he said.

Pictured back in July were Seatown Villas residents, who gathered to show their concerns at the proposed new development at Mantua Park . Included are, Pat Monaghan, Paddy Gerrard, Joan Parker, Tommy Ellis, Cllr Darragh Butler, Kitty Weldon, Thomas Lowndes, Alice Gerrard, Dolores Campion, Frank Redmond, Brigid Redmond, Josie Collins, Teresa Greene, James Perry and Bernie Perry

The plan is to build four apartments, eight one bed apartments, eight duplexes and 16 terraced houses. There will be three storey buildings, which is a bone of contention for residents. The Seatown Villas open space belongs to Seatown Villas and the retention of the boundary fence was of paramount importance to this end.

In the wake of the much talked about RTE series ‘Charlie,’ depicting former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey, the County Leader took to the streets to ask: “Do you think that RTE portrayed Charlie Haughey well, and what did you think of the series?” Eva Breitwieser

Q:

Sean Fagan, Donabate I enjoyed it! But I wanted to see more at home with the wife and that, and what was going on in the series, as I didn’t see the full thing.

Helen Brophy, Swords I was disappointed! He did some very good work, and that didn’t come out. I wasn’t a fan of his, but he did have some success, which didn’t come out. And he did some good.

Brian Howley, Balbriggan It was a very interesting series. I’m not quite sure if they portrayed him exactly as he was. But they portrayed him in line with the public perception all right.

Tom Scahill, Balheary I didn’t like it. The man had good points, and when a person is dead, let the dead rest.

Eoin McGrath, Malahide I enjoyed it. I lived through most of his time when he was in power, so I thought it was reasonably okay.

Derek Kelly, Ridgewood I thought it was good. And a lot of what was said in the documentary was true. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind.

Operation Transformation Comes To Rivervalley Nearly 250 people braved the cold in Rivervalley park in Swords last weekend to get active in the 6th Annual 3 km walk. This was organised by the County Council Sports Office in conjunction with the Irish Sports Council to coincide with RTE’s ‘Operation Transformation’ programme. There was more to offer than just walking on Saturday, as participants were also able to try out the new outdoor fitness equipment, a new addition and upgrade to the park. On launching the equipment, County Mayor, Cllr Mags Murray commented, “It’s a fabulous

amenity to have in the heart of Swords and I’m sure it will help not only to get people fit, but encourage more people to visit their local park.” There was also a fun SNAG golf demonstration. Both young and old stopped by to try their hand at chipping and driving in the hope of becoming the next Rory McIlroy! Marion Brown, Fingal’s Principal Sports Officer said: “This was a perfect opportunity for people to kick start their ‘get fit’ New Year resolutions with a short fun walk, and to hopefully use it to start exercising on a regular basis.”

Portmarnock Students Prepare For Lesotho Trip

Mr. Paramente Phamotse Lesotho Ambassador to Ireland at the cheque presentation by the County Council to Action Ireland Trust.

The students, parents and teachers from Portmarnock Community School are once again preparing for their charity mission to Lesotho in Africa, which they will depart on in February. The County Council’s staff charity, Helping Hand Fund has allocated over €150,000 to local, national and international charities since 2006 and this year Portmarnock based charity, Action Ireland Trust was nominated the Overseas Charity 2014 and is the recipient of an €8,000 allocation of funding to help fund their hospital project in Lesotho. Stephen Peppard from Corporate Affairs made the presentation of the cheque to Chairman of Action Ireland Trust, Niall Fitzgerald in County Hall, Swords recently. Speaking after the presentation, Niall Fitzgerald said, “We are overwhelmed with the allocation of this funding and I can safely say it will be put to good use at our hospital project in Lesotho. We have been working hard over the past three years to improve the standard of healthcare facilities at St Joseph’s Hospital in Roma near Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho. Our costs for the hospital project are quite high so this funding will be most welcome.” Action Ireland Trust has also supplied essential medical equipment to St Joseph’s Hospital in Roma, which has included an anaesthetic machine and a variety of dental equipment. One of the project objectives is to provide a fresh water supply to the hospital. The presentation to Action Ireland Trust coincided with the County Council’s hosting of a mapathon in the Swords Council Chamber. The mapathon was attended by students of Portmarnock Community School and St Joseph’s Secondary School, Rush. The concept is to use Open Street Maps to map various areas of Lesotho, to enable local authorities in Lesotho to have data available to them when they are considering planning of areas throughout the country. The students will be working on highly important development projects in Lesotho for two weeks. This will be the ninth year that a group of students and teachers from the school have embarked on the trip to do some charity work. This charity mission is an annual event, which every year sees over 50 Transition Year students, teachers and friends (each with a different skill set) to work in areas such as construction, health and education.

Lynam Delighted To Recognise Achievements Of Local GAA Star Local Sinn Féin councillor, Phil Lynam, was delighted to have his motion passed at a recent area council meeting to honour Fingallians GAA player and four time All Star, Paul Flynn. Speaking after the meeting Lynam said: “I am thrilled that the local area will look into acknowledging the achievements of local player Paul Flynn. This is

a tremendous accomplishment for Fingallians , and for all of the North County.” “This motion aimed to recognise his unique feat of being one of only a handful of people who have won four successive All Star awards and the only non- Kerryman to do this. Paul Flynn and his teammates are amateurs who receive no pay for the efforts they make, yet they bring so much joy and passion to the people of the North County, especially during the tough period of austerity,” he said.

With the youngest age demographic in the State, and such a fastgrowing population, we must continue to increase capacity levels in schools throughout the constituency.” He continued, “While this is positive news, the capacity issue will almost certainly exacerbate in the coming years, particularly in the areas surrounding Malahide and Swords. In these areas, the number of children attending primary level schools is currently higher than the capacity of secondary level schools. For this reason, it is essential that the Department of Education and Skills acts to provide greater infrastructure and resources to these communities to resolve the capacity issue before it worsens,” he concluded.

Morgan Receives Apology Over Blackmail Threat Rush cricketer, Eoin Morgan, who is the captain of the England cricket team, was recently the victim of a £35,000 blackmail plot. It involved a man claiming to have possession of explicit messages from Morgan to a former lover. The 28 yaer-old is said to have had a fling with an Australian woman five years ago. The man, named as Nick Emery, sent an email to the England and Wales Cricket Board, demanding the money. The email was tracked to Hobart in Tasmania, and it appears that he is the new boyfriend of the woman involved. He has since apologised for his actions. Local Students Excel At Young Scientist Exhibition Local students from all around the North County in Swords, Balbriggan, Skerries and Malahide excelled in the recent Young Scientist Exhibition. Students were awarded for their unique science projects, and each participating school should be very proud of their achievements. Ardgillan came out with two top awards, and Fingal Community College in Swords told the County Leader a little more detail about their project: Following Fingal Community College’s success in winning the 2014 National Mathlete Champions title, some students wanted to investigate various aspects of the competition. Almost 2,100 projects were submitted in the hope of exhibiting at this prestigious competition with a limited 550 places on offer. The Swords school secured two of those places with their projects on Mathletes. Transition Year students Jessica Fitzsimons and Marius Senchea’s project “Mathletes Nationwide” examined the geographical statistics about where Khan Academy (Mathletes) was used in the country. They identified the counties which were most and least successful, and hypothesised why this was the case and created strategies to target the least successful candidates for the Mathletes Challenge 2015. Also from Transition Year, Ciara Gilsenan and Emma Bodiu’s project “Mathletes: Males vs Female, Primary vs Secondary” investigated which gender and which school level, Primary or Secondary was more successful in the Mathletes Challenge. These projects were mentored by Transition

Year Science teachers Claire Scanlon and Damian Barrett, who were extremely proud of their students’ hard work and dedication to their chosen projects. Local senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), commented: “It was a pleasure to meet students from the North County at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition. There is always great talent and innovative projects put forward by local schools and this year was no exception,” he said. “This year’s exhibition received its highest ever number of entries, over 2000 projects from more than 360 schools including dozens in the North County. The exbo gives students an opportunity to display their work in research, analysis, technology and innovation and I hope more students will be inspired to take part again next year,” he added.

front a hundred or more people may not be that used to doing this and will naturally, be feeling a little nervous. So, to help those pre speech nerves why not get a hand from an expert? The North County has a number of services and experts who can teach you to overcome your anxiety by helping you shape a speech that’s right for you.

The County Leader has been giving you plenty of helpful tips to help you prepare for your big day. We’re continuing that again this week and trying to wrap up the last few tips to make sure we have everything covered. Aside from all the little (and not so little) details that must be remembered, make sure you get a chance to really enjoy your day. Marriage is one of the most wonderful commitments you can make in your life and with all the fuss right up to it, some might not have the time they would like to reflect on that. Remember to take a breather and make sure you have the day you’ve always wanted.

Plan Your Dream Day Start at the beginning and that means putting all your cards on the table and deciding what is reasonable and what is out of the question. If you’re going to have a traditional wedding in a church, you would need to see if the date you want if available. This is crucial and you need to be really doing this first. Another thing that should be high on the priority list is the venue. These things are so important and if they are left on the long finger, you could end up being sorry in the end. The big day is something that some people plan for a few years, however others may be in different situations and decide to get married within a few months. Whatever way you decide to go, make sure you keep your plan of action at hand. Here’s a tip, place a poster of your to-do list in your kitchen. The kitchen is also a place you can summon your family and decide who is doing what. When handing out jobs for the wedding, you have to have everything covered and consider other people’s feelings. Does your other half have a bigger family? Maybe they will have more on the altar. If a situation like this arises and you don’t want a big wedding party, make this decision early. These days, some people only go for one bridesmaid and one groomsman. This way, you can still have the traditional wedding style without the big fuss. On the other hand, if you want to have a lot of family and friends taking part in the ceremony, make that decision too.

The Cake

The All Important Honeymoon After all the excitement and (slight!) stress of your big day, most newly-weds will be dying to get away and let their hair down. The North County has many local travel agents who will help you plan that perfect trip away. Whether you’re looking to travel to an exotic location, or are planning an exciting city break, your local travel agent will help you plan it down to every last detail. Don’t forget to really take a breather, enjoy your break and adjust to the joys of newly married life.

Rings Of Love The rings are just as important as anything in the wedding. There are a wide range of jewellers in the North County with a vast variety of beautiful rings that you and your loved ones will adore. The rings symbolise the bond you and your partner are about to make and there should be as much thought and effort put into that just as much as the rest of the day. After all, a weak bond is a bond easily broken.

Don’t Forget Those Invitations! Invitations are a must for a wedding. It’s like the preview of a film, if it looks the part, people will expect great things. So much thought goes into every little detail of the invitations, even the font, colour and wording is all carefully thought out in order to make it as perfect as it can possibly be, but remember you can be as creative as you like with this. Here in the North County, there are a range of options available to you, so whether you want to buy from a certain shop or get your invites custom made, your needs will be catered for.

Getting Hitched?

These days, aside from the traditional wedding cake ideas, your local cake baker is probably well used to getting eccentric requests! Some might opt to go for small cupcakes or two smaller sized cakes, these are ideal if you’re having a more intimate style wedding, whereas the larger sized cakes will work for larger parties. Here in the North County, we have an array of talented wedding cake bakers who will make you your exquisite cake, any way you choose. If you’re unsure of what type to go for, the local friendly experts will be on hand to help you make that tough decision.

Happy Memories When you love somebody enough to marry them, you are going to want to remember every little detail of the day and keep the memories close to your heart forever. A wedding day can take forever to come, when you’re the one waiting on it and when the day comes it will go by so fast you won’t believe it, so make sure you have lots of memories to fall back on. When you look at your wedding DVD or photograph album, you will remember things you might have forgotten about otherwise. All of these little things will need to be taken care of before the big day and booked well in advance. The North County has a great selection of photographers, wedding wear, bakeries, transport companies, caterers and jewellers to mention a few of the things you will want to have to make your day a very special one.

placed in front of each guest with their name on it. There are lots of little things like this that can make a difference. Some couples put disposable cameras on the tables, these are collected when the wedding is over and the bride and groom get to see the photographs their guests have taken on their special day.

This time of year will be unkind to the cars that were only a few months ago cruising along, embracing those glorious summer weeks, blissfully unaware of the approaching stresses and strains they may have to endure in the months ahead. So, do take some time to consider how you can prepare your car in every way possible for the most unforgiving of seasons. It is not only important to be proactive because of the safety of the vehicle, but also to help save you time, stress and money. If you start these maintenance checks early, then you can budget for any additional costs over the next few

months at a much more manageable rate. So, this week, whilst you’re shopping right here in the North county, start to pick up those necessary products now rather then later. By adhering to the following tips, we can help to avoid those potentially perilous pitfalls:

Battery Flat batteries are hugely common in winter. If you haven’t replaced yours in quite a while, now would be the time to head down to your local mechanic to see if you are in need of a replacement. The additional use of heaters, lights and other electrical

components on the car all add to the strain which is placed on batteries during the cold period. You should therefore make sure that you do not use these features any more than is necessary; switching off heaters and blowers as soon as vision is restored for example. In addition, ensure that your car is not left unused for long periods such as over a weekend; as your battery will be less likely to fail if it has a regular charge running through it. Car batteries usually last no longer than five years; so if your battery is coming to the end of its life as winter approaches, it might be worthwhile changing it in order to

avoid the inconvenience of a breakdown.

Windscreen Ice on the windscreen is a regular morning occurrence in the winter. It is vital that you do not attempt to drive until your vision is clear, as the chance of accidents will significantly increase and you will likely be held accountable for any damage caused. It is recommended that you leave the house about ten minutes earlier than normal to ensure clear vision and remember to put your own safety before punctuality. Make sure that you are stocked up with de-

icer and have a scraper kept with you at all times. Utilise your air conditioning or blowers to speed up the de-misting and condensation removal inside the car. Windscreen wash should be topped up regularly, as this will prove to be essential in ensuring maximum visibility during the winter months, particularly when gritters make an appearance. Also make sure that windscreen wipers are in good conditions, but do not be tempted to use them to disperse ice from your windscreen as this could damage them. If the blades are torn, then this is a sign of damage which indicates that a replacement is needed.

Anti-freeze is the coloured fluid which is found in radiators. It is used to prevent your engine and radiators from freezing in the winter. You should regularly make sure that your vehicle’s anti-freeze levels are between the maximum and minimum. This will help avoid potential damage to the engine or radiators which will be much more expensive to fix than the couple of euros it would cost to buy anti-freeze. However, bear in mind that most car manufacturers fill modern vehicles with longer lasting anti-freeze which should not be mixed with traditional solutions. If you are unsure about what fluid to put into your vehicle, it is recommended that you

Drivers should check the tyre pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. Nevertheless, this doesn’t make up for the inconvenience of car failures or the cost of repairing them if you only have a basic breakdown cover policy. However, these are things that can be done to reduce the likelihood of these breakdowns occurring; the key is being proactive.

General Recommendations: If your car is due a tune-up, have it done sooner, rather than later. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries. Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Check the tyre tread depth and tyre pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tyre pressure should be checked weekly. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. Check to see that exterior and interior lights work

intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

Antifreeze Now is the time to stock up on a bottle or two, and fill your car up sooner rather than later. It’ll be too late on that morning you’re in a rush and only realise there’s a thick sheet of ice on your windscreen once you arrive at your car. You don’t want to put yourself in a position where you feel you have to then rush to your destination. Also, remember to have an ice scraper and de-icer handy. You are likely to be able to pick these items up from a local petrol station or a hardware store on your nearest main street.

Tyres It cannot be emphasised enough how crucial it is to ensure your tyres are road safe for those looming icy roads. Make sure that both the tread and pressure of your tyres are in tip-top conditions for those lethal winter months. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to replace that spare tyre you last used. Potholes and uneven roads can cause serious damage to tyres, and during

The results of a recent AA survey show that 11 per cent of motorists have had a tyre blow out in the last 4 years. With this in mind, the AA is urging motorists to give their cars a bit of TLC. Local garages all over the North County will be able to provide you excellent service and offers to get those tyres up to scratch. Tyre pressures are also important. It is recommended that you check these at least once a week during the winter; ensuring that they reach the manufacturers recommended levels.

Brakes Brakes, as you know, are of critical importance. Stopping distance can be heavily compromised this season, so the functionality and sensitivity of the brakes is crucial to the safety level of the vehicle. It’s worth taking them to a nearby garage to have them checked in the next couple of weeks.

Lights / Heating System Daylight hours are short and car lights used much more frequently. Therefore, lights need to be fully functioning, not just for your safety, but for other road users too, so double check they’re in working order and road-fit. It’s crucial to ensure the heating in your car is in fully working order, not only for the sake of comfort, but so that it is efficient in keeping the windscreen clear, avoiding any accidents. So, if in any doubt with either your lights or your heating, then get right in touch with your local mechanic.

Plenty Of Time Journeys will undoubtedly take longer in winter, what with heating up the car, de-

icing, and potentially having to take it very slow and steady in treacherous conditions. So do allow extra time for each journey, just in case. Accidents are much more common at this time of year, so unwelcome traffic jams may spring up unannounced, so it’s also imperative that you have enough fuel in your car.

Wrap Up Warm In the unfortunate case of an emergency, keep gloves and a jumper in the car in case you need to get out of your car to make a call, find the nearest petrol station, clear some snow or ice from your car etc. It is also a very wise idea to have a spade in your boot, by which to shovel snow if necessary. So remember to take care, stock up and be well prepared for what the cold weather will bring.

Road Safety Authority Warns Drivers Of Sun Glare The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána are reminding drivers around the North County to be aware of the danger posed by ‘sun glare’, which results in drivers being temporarily dazzled or blinded by the intensity and brightness of a low sun on the horizon. The appeal comes, as provisional crash reports suggest that drivers being temporarily blinded by ‘sun glare’ may have been a contributory factor in some fatal collisions in 2014. Commenting on the issue, Ms. Moyagh Murdock, CEO, RSA said “Because, at this time of the year, the sun sits so low in the sky, late in the morning and early evening, corresponding with the main commuting times, the sun visor on

the car isn’t really much help at all. If a driver is driving straight into such a sun, he or she can be completely dazzled by the sheer intensity and brightness of its rays. The situation is made worse if the windscreen is dirty or greasy, or if it’s been raining, or the ground is covered with snow. In this situation the glare reflects off the wet or snow covered road to further dazzle the driver. “Ensure your windscreen is clean inside and out. Add windshield washer fluid to the water in the reservoir and check that the wipers are not worn away or damaged. Replace them if they are. Buying polarised sun glasses, and keeping a pair in the car is also a must. They will help greatly if driving into a sun that’s low on the horizon,” she added. “If you are heading East in the morning, the direction the sun rises or heading West in the late afternoon, where it sets, please be conscious of sun glare.”

Reilly Welcomes News Of Plain Tobacco Packaging Plan Minister of Children and Youth Affairs, James Reilly has welcomed the news that the British Government will bring forward a plain cigarette packaging plan for vote in the parliament before the next election. “Here in Ireland our legislation providing for plain packaging will be at committee stage in the Dail in the next weeks. It is great news that our nearest neighbour is likely to join us in the move to bring in plain packaging,” he said. “The current cigarette pack is considered the last billboard for tobacco manufacturers and the requirement to have more graphic health warnings in the new plain packets will be a strong deterrent. As Children’s Minister, I am determined to push this forward in order to try and prevent children and young people from taking up smoking in the first place,” he concluded.

Smith Wants Community Policing Forum For Swords Local Labour councillor, Duncan Smith has said he is disappointed with the County Council’s response to restart a Community Policing Forum in Swords. Smith asked the Chief Executive if efforts could be made by the Council this year, to restart the Swords Community Policing Forum in light of ongoing crime in the area. However, in a detailed response, the Council said the local Policing Fora for Swords and Balbriggan, which was in place up to 2013 could not be restarted due to lack of funds, and the fact that they did not want to “duplicate a system already in place.” The Council explained that In May 2014, the North Dublin Community Care Service was established, to respond to drug/alcohol based problems. Referrals are from Swords, Balbriggan, Rush, Lusk, Donabate and Skerries,

according to the local authority. “The North Dublin Community Care Services would not be in favour of a duplication/overlap in service provision as this would divert essential resources,” the Council said. “Without a source of funding available, it is not feasible to re-establish the Local Policing Fora at Swords and Balbriggan,” they added. Councillor Smith said he was disappointed with the Council’s response, as he felt Swords would really benefit from a well knitted community forum in the area. “I was a member of the original committee before it disbanded, and I think, given the size of Swords that a committee should try to be established,” he said. “I was disappointed with their response, and I’m not going to simply accept that,” he added. “Swords doesn’t have chronic crime issues, but like every largely populated town, incidences do occur, and I think a policing forum would help to combat those,” he continued. “I’ve been speaking with a number of local councillors since, and we are going to pursue this,” Smith concluded.

Part Funded ADHD Assessments In Balbriggan Friends of Autism and ADHD are delighted to be in a position to be able to part fund up to 10 assessments for people with Autism and /or ADD/ADHD. These assessments will be part funded by friends of Autism & ADHD and part funded by the applicant. Thanks to the good work of the staff and volunteers of Friends of Autism and ADHD, to those who donate to Friends of Autism and ADHD, these assessments are a direct result of your generosity and for that they are very grateful. Places for these assessments are limited. First preference will be given to young people who have not already received an assessment. Referral for assessments can be made by contacting Bernie Hagan or Sonya Mc Garry on 01-8020484, or by email adhdfingal@gmail.com

Young players had a chance to play on the pitches for the first time much to their excitement. The pitch is the biggest All Weather ground in the North County and reportedly cost in the region of €1.3m.
