SafeTALK Workshop’s Aim To Prevent Suicide St Sylvester’s GAA club Malahide held a safeTALK workshop recently at their clubhouse for members and locals of the area. SafeTALK is a half day alertness training programme funded by the HSE that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide alert helper. The programme prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. These specific skills are known as suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them may use them to help reduce suicide risk in their communities. Since its development in Canada in 2006, safeTALK has been used in over 20 countries around the world. The core belief of the programme is that suicide is preventable, and that prevention starts in the community. Everyone in a community has a part to play, and research has shown that virtually anyone can learn the skills to become a suicide intervention caregiver. Saving lives in this way is possible because most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with overwhelming pain in their lives. Speaking to the County Leader, trainer Louise Nolan said, “We know that most people, given the choice, would choose life and try to work through their difficulties, if they could only get help from someone with the right knowledge and skills. The belief is that by teaching these skills to as many people as possible, it can help the world become safer from suicide, one community at a time, one intervention at a time.”

Kenure Exhibition Launched In Rush An exhibition marking the 700th anniversary of Kenure Estate, has been officially opened at Rush Library last week. The opening was performed by local senator, Dr James Reilly (FG) and attracted a gathering of interested locals. The beautiful exhibition is the brainchild of Niall Gosson, a student at the local St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush. He is also Vice Chair of Young Fine Gael Fingal and he spoke eloquently about the history of Kenure to the gathering. The event also coincided with the 7th anniversary of the location of the award winning Rush Library at its current site at the old St Maur’s Church. Gosson told the County Leader, “I was asked to put on this exhibition to celebrate the Rush library’s 7th year being open to the public. It is also celebrating the 700 years of the Kenure estate and the Kenure collection is being

Balbriggan Meals on Wheels

A cheque presentation to the amount of €492 was presented to Balbriggan Meals on Wheels by Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín at the Meals on Wheels premises on Hampton Street in the town last week. Loretta Ni Churraiglin is the manager of Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín and she explained to the County Leader about the organisation. “Feachtas is an Irish language youth organisation and we run clubs through the medium of Irish throughout Dublin. We have a new club here in Balbriggan, which started last September. What’s very important about the club is that it is the young people’s club.” “There was a competition that Foróige ran called a Youth Citizenship Award and Club Óige Feachtas Baile Brigín entered the competition. The way that it worked was that the club had to do something for the community. Feachtas came up with the idea of helping Meals on Wheels in Balbriggan, so they sat down with them to find out exactly what they wanted. They discovered that funding was a major issue and the members went to look for sponsorship. Silverhills Food in Monaghan sponsored them to the tune of €250 and they also received funding from businesses in the community, as well as selling raffle tickets in school. We’re very proud of them,” said Loretta. Eoghan O’Ceallacháin, founder member of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels and fluent Irish speaker was very impressed with the efforts and thoughtfulness of the group and he praised them for their civic responsibility as he addressed them in Irish. Members of Feachtas then entertained staff of Meals on Wheels with some beautiful singing, which was appreciated by all. Brendan Ingoldsby, Chairman of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels said, “We are very grateful for this donation. Meals on Wheels is dependent on the generosity of the community of Balbriggan to keep our services going and we are delighted to accept this donation,” he said. Feachtas meets every Tuesday evening in the sports hall at Gaelscoil Baile Brigín. A new theatre group is coming to Swords this year. Tempus Productions is expanding it’s team and setting up a rehearsal base in Colaiste Choilm School in Swords for this winter season. Previously they were located in Clontarf, but feel that Swords offers a new and exciting area for them. They held an information night in Colaiste Choilm recently, in preparation

for this year’s panto to be staged in Dublin City this December. Tempus Productions has been in existence since 2009 and growing every year. Tempus Productions cofounder, Joe Lunney told the County Leader, “Our group is open to anyone who has an interest at any level in theatre plays, drama, panto and variety. We believe this area of the arts is virtually untapped in Swords

and we’re looking for lots of new kids and adults. We have lots of names on our list already and still growing. We are a community based group, run by local people for local people,” he said. The motto of the group is to promote fun, self-confidence through theatre and acting and building trusting relationships that last a lifetime. The Information

evening attracted a good attendance, which included County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler and local councillor, Joe Newman who both welcomed the arrival of Tempus Productions to Swords and both feel they will be a great addition to the area. Cllr Newman has been a long time advocate of a theatre for Swords and has actively campaigned for one as part of the new Swords Cultural Quarter.

A new exciting Cake Cafe is set to open at Millfield Shopping Centre, Balbriggan that is set to bring diversity and choice to shoppers at the centre. Cupcake Insanity Cake Café will open on Saturday, 17th June on the first floor. Proprietor, Lisa Slevin promises the opening will be a family day with face painting, magicians and free samples of the products. There will be a lot of fun at the opening with staff members giving out samples. “We specialise in all cakes, but our speciality is cupcakes. We also make cream cakes, birthday cakes, wedding cakes, doughnuts, churros and any type of cake you can imagine,” said Lisa. The cakes are baked on site, where Lisa starts work at 3am every morning to bake the cakes for the day, ensuring all the cakes are really fresh before opening at 10am. “Depending on how busy we are, I may have to do a second batch during the day.” “I do a lot of corporate orders, which is proving to be very successful, with free delivery for clients. With coming to Millfield, I will be concentrating on kids’ parties, which will generate great excitement.” For corporate business, cup cakes or cookies are the most popular, with companies asking for their logo to be on the cupcakes, with edible ink. These are delivered free of charge by Lisa. Doughnuts, eclairs, coffee slices and scones with a twist are also some of Lisa’s specialities, as well as cookie pizzas. This is a giant cookie topped with nutella and different types of sweets baked in the oven and cut up just like a pizza, which are adored by kids.

Great Win For Rush Fight Academy Star Malahide man, Neil Ward represented Ireland in the UK MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Fighting championships at the weekend and proudly brought home gold. Ward, who trains with Rush Fight Academy, represented Ireland in the championship fight that had amateur and professional fights on the card on the night. The UK Fighting Championships is one of the leading MMA promotions in the UK and they provide one of the best platforms for fighters to compete. Ward, who competes at bantamweight in MMA which is 61.2 kg or 135 pounds, told the County Leader, “I am delighted

By Rachel Wallace with this win as I wanted to fight abroad for a long time and be able to represent Ireland, so this is a dream come trough for me.” He went on to speak about his club, Rush fight Academy; “It has been in operation for 10 years. It started in smaller venues and renting studios, until we got our own premises in Rush about two years after it started. There are classes on every day at all levels in boxing, MMA and BJJ (Brazilian JiuJitsu). We have fighters competing in all of these sports and at all levels. There are a few professional fighters too, who compete in MMA such as Adam

Caffrey, who just won in Scotland recently. Other professional fighters from the local area include Gary Morris and Thomas Hogan,” he said. “Another Rush Academy fighter, Paul Lawrence will compete in ‘BAMMA’, a very important mixed martial arts event in the 3 arena in July,” said Ward. We look forward to hearing of more success in the future.

KIDS' PARTIES Kids’ parties are the most important part of Cupcake Insanity Cake Cafe and these can be themed, so if a child is into Minions, or Frozen, they will do a party catered to that theme. “We will have an area devoted to kids’ parties and if the child’s theme is Frozen, we will have all the decorations made for Frozen, where all the frostings will be done in the Frozen colour, and the kids decorate and have tea parties. We supply the food and the cake and there are all different deals to suit everyone.”

CREATE YOUR OWN CUPCAKE Create your own Cupcake is an initiative by Lisa that is exclusive to Millfield and is not available anywhere else. Imagine having four flavours of cupcakes that are undecorated. I will have all the freshly made frostings laid out like ice-cream, with all the toppings. Here you can have a vanilla cupcake with a scoop of strawberry frosting with chocolate sauce and nuts. On the opening day, Lisa will get ideas from people on creating their own cupcakes and a winner will be chosen, who will appear on the menu with the winning cupcake named after them.

BIRTHDAY CAKES With birthdays being such an important milestone in a person’s life, Lisa and her team can provide for your every wish. From your basic small six inch cake, to a three tier cake with sparkles, everything is available. They have about 30 different flavours, but not everything is sweet, and they even make sugar free cakes, so there’s something there for everyone.

WEDDING CAKES Lisa is determined to put her own stamp on the wedding cake market, so much so, that she now has a lot of orders for cakes that are coming up in the next year. These came about as a result of her appearance on the Bride of the Year Show, where she exhibited her range of wedding cakes. Wedding cakes are a particular speciality with people choosing cupcakes on a Perspex cupcakes stand. However, I find that most people who come to me want a traditional wedding cake. I always recommend people to choose a fruit cake on one of the tiers, as not all guests are going to want Rocky Road or Vanilla, so this keeps it traditional.

THEMED CAKES Themed cakes are very popular, particularly if a person is into sports or super heroes. With anniversary cakes, if you send me a photo of your wedding, I will print it on fondant with edible ink and I can put that on the cake. This is becoming very popular and personalised. Retirement cakes are also very popular. I also do Churros, a Mexican product, which is a dough similar to a doughnut that is put into a piping bag and is piped out of a star nozzle. It is then deep fried, just like a doughnut and it is then rolled in sugar and cinnamon and is served with a chocolate pinnache and is served warm. Lisa is originally from Swords and now lives in Balbriggan. Prior to setting up Cupcake Insanity, she worked for 10 years for One4All Gift Voucher Shop as a Senior Corporate Account Manager in sales. She decided to set up the Cake Company and baked in a unit in Glasnevin. She also had a stand in Arnotts, where her cupcakes went down a treat with everyone. Baking was always a great passion for Lisa, who closely watched her mother and aunt baking beautiful cakes.

Loreto Swords Teacher Calls It A Day Loreto College Swords is set to lose three teachers at the end of the school term later this month. great privilege for me to have taught them. Maura was quite emotional when she spoke about her students. She had great praise for her fellow teachers and staff at the school, describing them as ‘so talented, creative and positive and so supportive. “We definitely give our students a safe, respectful environment in which to learn. One of the most striking changes that Maura has seen during her teaching career has been the holistic approach to teaching. It’s not just about the academic part of things, but how they develop as people and how they get on with their peers and how they socialise. The whole person has become the focus and it’s much better. The students won’t learn or develop if they’re not happy and that’s the number one thing, as they come to school. The pictures on the wall and flowers are a clear indication of this happiness and inclusivity. Upon retiring, Maura wants to ‘keep the brain ticking over’ and hopes to learn a new language. “I like art and exhibitions and I may do some voluntary work and I look forward to spending more time with my family,” she said.

Cross Border Health Must Be Protected Local TD, Louise O’Reilly (SF) and her party’s Health spokesperson, has accused Minister for Health, Simon Harris and his department of not taking Brexit seriously, after officials were unable to tell her how many procedures were carried out by the NHS under the Cross Border Health Directive in 2016. O’Reilly was speaking after recent reports of the threat posed to cross border health projects by Brexit. O’Reilly told the County Leader,“While these reports are disturbing, they are not surprising. The twelve large scale projects funded by the EU as well as cross border mental health projects must be protected. People living in border areas are rightly concerned about this revelation and we cannot be reassured that the government and the Department of Health have this matter under control”.

Stamullen road racer, Alan Bonner has died after a crash during a qualifying race at the Isle of Man TT. The 33-year old crashed at the 33rd Milestone on the Mountain section during qualifying for the Senior TT. Bonner’s death is the third at this year’s event, following the fatal crashes of Jochem van den Hoek and Davey Lambert. This will come as a shock to people in his neighbourhood and in the greater North County area, where motor cycling is widely supported and who unfortunately, are no strangers to motor cycling tragedies. In 2010 Bonner was the Irish road race Senior Support champion. Over the past 10 years, 32 riders have been killed at the event. Local Families Remain Without A Social Worker Local Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson for Health, Louise O’Reilly has described a response to a parliamentary question given by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs as “extremely worrying.” The response shows over 5,000 cases, including those from the North County held by Tusla, do not have a social worker allocated to them. Tusla, the Child and Family agency, have come under scrutiny in the past for such a high level of unallocated cases, and these figures raise further concerns. O’Reilly told the County Leader, “Given that North County Dublin has the youngest population in the state, these are very worrying trends. I am gravely concerned about

these figures, because they show an appalling lack of care for vulnerable young people. I am aware of cases in which we have had to intervene to ensure that social workers were allocated and this is utterly unacceptable,” she said. “Minister Zappone needs to urgently examine how children are treated in the state and she needs to look closely at areas like the North County, where the growing population of young people should warrant additional resources. I have raised the lack of school places in Swords and the fact that children in Balbriggan can’t register with GPs directly with the Ministers responsible.” It is not good enough when we can see that there is a clear demand

for additional services for our children, that they be left without by this government,” she fumed. “It is extremely worrying to discover that over 5,000 cases nationwide remain without a social worker, despite repeated calls for Tusla to act in this regard. “That figure represents 20 per cent of Tusla’s overall caseload, which is a staggeringly high per cent number. “We must consider that these cases, although not an absolute emergency, require urgent attention, and the best interests of the child are not being prioritised due to long waiting times. “Tusla are falling well short of goals when it comes to hiring social workers. I understand

the field of qualified social workers is not a saturated one, but Tusla must begin to look elsewhere for recruitment, as it is having a detrimental effect on those involved. O’Reilly concluded by saying, “I hope both the Tusla Board and Minister Katherine Zappone can work together in addressing such extraordinary figures, and employ the staff required to deal with these cases as a matter of urgency.”

Sad Passing Of Swords Lions Club Secretary Lions Club members throughout Ireland will have been very saddened by the passing of Marion Conneely of Swords and District Lions Club and Past District Governor (PDG) of Lions in Ireland (2015 to 2016), the first female to attain that position. Maurice Kealy, PRO Swords and District Lions Club spoke to the County Leader about Marion and said, “She had been ill for a number of months, but her health worsened in the past few weeks. She was a former President of Swords and District Lions Club and its Secretary for many years right up to the present. Marion was without doubt one of the hardest working and most loved members of our association, known and admired throughout Lions of Ireland and the UK.” “She worked quietly, never seeking praise or public recognition. She truly believed in the Lions motto “We Serve”. Ironically, Lions ran its annual Holiday Project in Trabolgan last week for senior citizens throughout Ireland, an event to which she was deeply committed. Many senior citizens of Swords area will be grateful to her over the years for organising their holiday there, she being our Club officer who dealt annually with our local Senior Citizens Centre. Her enthusiasm, friendship and sense of fun will be greatly missed by all who knew her,” he concluded.

County Mayor Cllr Darragh Butler, is pictured at the launch of the 2017 British Open Regional Qualifying event at The Island, with the Club’s President David Evans and Captain Fergus Duddy.

Island Golf Club Hosts British Open Qualifying On 26th June, some of golf’s most exciting young talent will descend on The Island Golf Club in Donabate in their attempt to qualify for the British Open Championship to be held at Royal Birkdale in July. The Island is one of 14 courses in nine countries across five continents hosting qualifying competitions that will eventually provide 44 of the players who will tee it up alongside the top players in the world at the 2017 Open. This is the fifth successive year that

The Island has hosted Regional Qualifying and is testament to the quality of the links and high regard in which the course is held internationally. The Island, which is one of the oldest golf courses in Ireland, regularly features among the top 10 courses in the country and is currently number 51 in Golf World Magazine’s UK and Ireland rankings. County Mayor, Cllr Darragh Butler, said: “North County Dublin is a paradise for golfers and The Island is one of its jewels as has been shown by its inclusion on the British Open Regional Qualifying roster for the past five years and its selection as co-host of the British Amateur Open with Portmarnock in 2019. This will continue to attract golfers to the Donabate peninsula.”

Challenge To Sinn Féin The UK election produced a complex result, the effects of which will dictate political pace across the UK for a long time. The new Government enters into the Brexit negotiations next Monday. The policy positions developed before the election may need to be altered due to the minority position of the Tories. The support they need to stay in power will be drawn from the DUP. The price of that support may well prove to be the difference between a hard or soft exit from the EU. The DUP are inherently euro sceptic, but they equally are anxious for a seamless border between the North and the Republic. So it’s expected that, as part of the price for support, that party will insist that an accommodation is found. There are a number of particular financial incentives which they will also push for. Amongst

them is the reduction of VAT for tourism related products. The change would be similar to that introduced in the Republic by Varadkar, when he was Minister for Tourism. This economic agenda will to a large extent find favour with the other political parties operating in the north. Sinn Fein have, in the past, criticised the UK Government’s failure to appreciate the needs of the North particularly in relation to Brexit. In light of the election result, Brian Hayes the Dublin FG MEP says, “If Sinn Fein is concerned about the impact of Brexit on Ireland - North and South, it should abandon its policy of abstention and take its seats in the House of Commons.” “MPs from the SNP in Scotland and Plaid Cymru in Wales will be in Westminster defending the inter-

By Cathal Boland ests of the people who elected them. Sinn Fein should now do the same. It should stop standing on the sidelines and get on the pitch. We need Irish voices where it matters.” “The outcome of the UK election means that the House of Commons will now be centre stage in the B r e x i t negotiations. The f u t u r e direction of the negotiations on the UK side will be controlled by Parliament. Every vote matters. If Sinn Fein are really serious about defending Irish interests they must take their seats” concluded MEP Hayes.” On election night, the Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams clearly stated that no such move will be contemplated.

Residents In Balbriggan Need Swimming Pool The need for a swimming pool has raised it’s head again in Balbriggan. A group of four mature students got to work on a project to see just how big the need is for a pool in Balbriggan and began an online survey. One of the people campaigning for the delivery for a swimming pool for Balbriggan is Clodagh O’Donovan, who told the County Leader, “Myself and my three colleagues are a part of a community development project and we were given a project to identify the specific needs of the people of Balbriggan. The seaside town has seen a huge growth in the population over the last few

By Leslie Murphy years and has over 25,000 residents to date and is likely to have up to 30,000 over the next eight years according to figures from the CSO. I started up the survey just to see what kind of a response I would get and within an hour there was close to 700 signatures,” she said. “People really want this facility and after reading some of the comments on the survey, it was plain to see that the need for a swimming pool is very clear. With 80 per cent of people using cars weekly to get to a pool with their families, 21 per cent use public transport and the majority of these people have two children.”

Residents have made it clear online in their comments, saying that Balbriggan is one of the largest towns in Ireland without a swimming pool. Swimming lessons are seen as a core part of the primary and second level curriculum. It’s Important that children can learn to swim especially living in a coastal town and for a population of this size not to have access to a swimming pool in the town is not good enough.” She continued, “Some of the comments of people vary from, “I think it would be an amazing idea as we have been waiting years for it and there has been nothing done. After a successful consultation process, which began in February of this year, the Council have now announced that the plans have gone out on public display. Cllr Philip Lynam (SF) spoke to the County Leader about the subject, when he said,”I am really delighted to see these works are going out on public display. A lot of work went into making this happen, myself and Cllr Duncan Smith (Lab) worked cross party to push the Council on the issue, after a major accident this year,” he said. Cycle In Memory Of Rescue 116 Members of Dublin Airport’s Police & Fire Service held a memorial cycle on Sunday last, in remembrance of the crew of Rescue 116. Airport Police and Fire Service staff, together with members of An Garda Síochána and the Irish Aviation Authority were joined by some family members of the crew Rescue 116 to cycle Dublin Airport’s perimeter road seven times, clocking up a total distance of 116 km.

Airport Police & Fire Service member and organiser of the event, Bryan Russell said, “Like everyone, we were absolutely devastated by this tragic event. Those who work in emergency services share a special connection, so when a terrible accident like this occurs it resonates deep within our community. We wanted to have a memorial event and it felt right that we should do it on the 11th day of the sixth month, by cycling seven laps of the airport’s

perimeter which adds up to a total of 116 km,” he added. Although the event was not originally organised as a fundraiser, many people supported the event by giving services and food for the cycle as well as donating funds. This has led to a gofundme page being set up; and already, over €2,000 has been raised which will be given to the R116 Fund. Many of those who took part cycled the entire 116 km, while others participated as part of a relay.

If upgrading your car is on the to-do list for this year, then now is a good time to shop around for the best deals and offers available from your local car dealer. The ‘172’ ranges are making their way to the shop floors as we speak and there is bound to be a make and model to suit your motoring needs. The types of deals on offer are varying from competitor to competitor and range from competitive finance and PCP prices, to 3 years free servicing, up to 4,000 euro scrappage deals and even some 7 year warranties. This is the ideal opportunity to get rid of that old banger and replace it with either a brand spanking new 172 model, or a really decent upgrade. It will make all the difference to have a modern, comfortable car that has all the mod-cons, including sat nav as standard, as well as other great features. The first question to ask yourself is what type of car do you need for the lifestyle you have. Once you have established this it is easier to search the models and brands of car you think will work for you. The joy of driving is a very personal experience. Some love the speed, others the practical benefits it affords.

Then there are those who enjoy driving as a skill, who pride themselves on their ability to cope with challenging traffic conditions and negotiate terrifying hairpin bends. As they say, “nothing beats the experience, enjoyment and autonomy of driving”. You can narrow your search down by using car magazines or online by visiting your local dealers’ websites and searching through their catalogue and prices.

The good thing about car magazines and compare sites, is that they can take away some of the leg work for you. They not only discuss the latest models but future models also and compare their benefits with those of comparable models from a range of manufacturers.

When conducting your search and bearing in mind the type of car you are looking for, you can then sift through the different deals and promotions available. Most websites have a service where you can book a test drive. This would be the next step for you once you have narrowed down your search. A test drive is essential in deciding if the car is right for you, only by sitting in the car and driving it will you get a feel for whether or not it is the right car for you. If you plan on test driving two or three cars, take notes on how your felt each car performed so that you can remember and compare. Overall enjoy the process, don’t rush it and you will reap the rewards. If you’re interested in buying a car, then you’ve probably discovered that there are essentially two options when it comes to where you can get your next vehicle. You can either buy a used car from a private seller or buy a new, certified pre-owned or used car from a dealer. Given that you’ll probably get a more casual, laid-back atmosphere by going through a private seller, what are the advantages of buying from a dealer? We have a few answers.

MASSIVE CLEARANCE SALE Reputation Another benefit of buying from dealers is that their reputations matter. While some dealers have bad reputations, most car dealers are trying to offer the best customer service they can, which means, if you have a problem with a car soon after you buy it, you may be able to ask the dealer for help. On the contrary, a private seller will likely wash their hands clean of the deal once the car is sold, and they almost certainly won’t be able to give you mechanical help or other assistance after the deal is done.

Financing Benefits

Extra Options You might want to buy a car from a dealer instead of a private seller because you can choose some extra options for your vehicle. You can actually add some features at a dealer you wouldn’t normally be able to buy from a private seller. Want an extended warranty to cover your car after the manufacturer warranty expires? A dealer can offer it. A dealer can also offer other promotions, such as free oil changes or tyre rotations, to earn your business. You won’t get those items with a private seller.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of buying a car from a dealer, however, is the myriad of financing options. One example is that dealers will typically offer their own financing options, while a private seller won’t. If you’re buying a car from a private seller, you’ll have to secure your own financing, and if you’re having trouble doing that, you’ll probably have to buy a car from a dealer. Another example of a dealer-related financing benefit is that many lending companies won’t finance a car if it’s owned by a private seller. Some lending companies don’t trust a private seller to accurately value a car, while dealerships are thought to offer more accurate pricing. As a result, getting a loan for a privately owned car can be harder, and in some cases, the interest rate can be higher.

Togetherness Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you always used. Put no difference into your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be the household name it always was. Let it be spoken without the shadow of a ghost in it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. What is death but only a negligible accident. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight. All is well, nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before.

From Loving Husband Brendan, Family and Friends.
