‘Don’t Wait Until January’ Farrell Calls For Irish Water Board To Go

As the controversy over Irish Water rumbles on, local TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has thrown his hat into the ring, by demanding the resignation of the Board of the company Speaking to the County Leader, Farrell said, “My action in calling for the resignation of the entire Board, has been borne out of frustration regarding the whole Irish Water issue. I’m particularly frustrated with the way management of Irish Water have handled communication problems, where there have been many mistakes. There has been a distinct lack of confidence, having failed to be upfront with people, particularly about performance related pay. Irish Water are not solely to blame, political failures have also been to blame.”

Failure to communicate has been the primary problem associated with the company, according to Farrell, as well as the time taken to relay information to the public. “In 2011, we knew that charges were coming on line, and I want to know

But, Farrell Has Confidence In Tierney why it has taken three-and-a-half years to find out how apartments would be metered, for instance. We have saved hundreds of

millions of euro for the exchequer in establishing Irish Water. “How can people be expected to have confidence in Irish Water, given that they have failed to be upfront with people about performance related pay. At the end of the day they should call a bonus a ‘bonus’,” he said. In calling for the resignation of the Board now, whom he says are to be stood down in January, Farrell believes that Chief Executive, John Tierney should be allowed to continue in his role. “I know John Tierney from his days as manager of Fingal County Council, where I served as a councillor. I am familiar with his ability, and firing him is not the solution to the problem,” he said.

Finally, they want to support towards Molly,” the say a big ‘Thank You’ to all McNally family said.

“Furthermore, it would be a costly exercise to replace him, which would still leave us without a chief executive; that’s not a solution.” Farrell, however, is calling on Tierney to be more approachable and to become the visible face of Irish Water. When he took to the airwaves and referred to consultants, a dirty word in Irish politics, he made a grave error. I feel he should be communicating more with the public. I feel that he and the board are hiding in the long grass on this issue. One week after the Budget, we are still talking about Irish Water, instead of the benefits delivered in the budget. It is very frustrating,” said Farrell. “Clarity is required and I would call on John Tierney to clear up the confusion once and for all. He needs to take to the airwaves or issue a statement, as soon as possible. There are clearly communication issues with Irish Water, with a continuous stream of conflicting information coming out - this is not providing an effective service to the people. The question of billing is a particularly thorny issue and needs to be clarified and should have been done long ago. It needs to be dealt with in a calm way and not in the way populist politicians and extreme elements demand.”

Fianna Fáil Will Tackle Property Tax Time Bomb – O’Brien Local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF), has warned that North County homeowners are facing a property tax time bomb. According to O’Brien, Fine Gael and Labour included a measure in the law that properties have to be revalued from their 2013 levels in 2016. O’Brien commented: “Property prices have been rising steadily and the recovery in the market is welcome, but the

Trevor has retired as principal of St Andrew’s School in Malahide after 42 years, thought to be one of the longest serving teachers in the country. What’s even more remarkable is that every year was spend teaching at the famed Malahide school.

A total of 212 guests turned up on the night, to pay tribute to this very popular

teacher. There were lots of speakers, including Ruth Sloan, who was deputy principal for the majority of the time he was there. Rev. Dr. Norman Gamble spoke on behalf of the Board of Management and Karen Reynolds, on behalf of the Parents Association. Garvan Evans spoke on behalf of his son David, better known as The Edge from U2, who was a former pupil. There was an air of excitement in Rush National School on Friday last, as the school held it’s annual fundraising Cake Sale. The school hall was decorated in Halloween favours and there were rows of tables with delicious cakes, which were individually baked by pupils of the school. Dave Hurley of the Parents Association told the County Leader,

“This is our annual Halloween cake sale, so all the kids were busy at home baking cakes. We have a prize giving ceremony for the best cakes. In the afternoon, members of the public can come in and buy cakes. It’s one of the best fun days in the school, which is eagerly awaited by all, both teachers and pupils,” he said. “Everyone gets into the

Skerries Pharmacist Shortlisted For Award Claire Caldwell from Skerries, who works at Care Pharmacy in Skerries, has been shortlisted for the Young Pharmacist of the Year Award, which is also sponsored by Helix Health. The Helix Health Pharmacist Awards are aimed at ‘celebrating excellence’ across all disciplines of the pharmacy profession and raising funds for the Pharmacy Benevolent Fund.

spirit of Halloween and dresses up for the occasion. The local shops have been cleared out of all their stock of flour for the past few days,” he said. As usual, the day was a great success and trading for cakes was very brisk in the afternoon. Perhaps we may even have unearthed a new Paul Hollywood, or Mary Berry.

Speaking at the shortlist announcement, Fintan Moore, Chairman of the Organising Committee, took the opportunity to highlight the challenges facing pharmacists, as a result of the prescription charge, which remained unchanged in Budget 2015, saying, “The €2.50 prescription charge currently imposed on medical cardholders is creating real problems for pharmacists in Dublin and throughout the country. We are all looking forward to the announcement of the eventual winners at our gala awards ceremony in November.” Nine awards will be presented in total at the 2014 Helix Health Pharmacist Awards, which will take place on Saturday, 29th November, at the Mansion House in Dublin.

YOURVIEW With reporters Jemma Came and Athina Anastasiou

Jemma Came

With the onset of Halloween, we asked the question: Is it dangerous for children to go Trick and Treating?

Athina Anastasiou

Liam O’Brien – Swords A lot of adults go out with the kids anyway, so I think it’s fairly safe, they don’t let them out at least until the kids are that little bit older, and they bring the smaller kids with them so there’s no problems.

Phyllis Kelly – Lusk Not around some of the places, I think it depends on their age, after, I’d say 11 maybe. I’d let them go no problem, if they have an adult with them, as we live in Lusk they all go out together. Normally I don’t go with them anymore, but my daughter goes as she has younger kids.

Bronwyn Crean – Swords Yes it is safe, as long as it’s on your road, it’s grand from about five I’d say, but if they’re under five they’d need to be with an adult.

Janice McGillivray – Balbriggan I have a four year old son and he is not allowed to go, unless accompanied by one of his parents. I think realistically when he is ten I would let him go alone, but I would check where he went and it would have to be within our estate.

Gormanston College Celebrates Diamond Jubilee Gormanston College celebrated it’s 60th anniversary last Thursday, 23rd October. To mark this special occasion, a ceremonial and liturgical event took place in the school for the present students and staff, as well as Franciscan friars, retired teachers, past pupils. The Mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Meath, Most Rev Dr Michael Smith, and was attended by local representatives, including, Junior Minister for Education, Damien English, Helen McEntee TD and Senator Thomas Byrne. After much deliberation, the Irish Franciscans decided to move their secondary school from

Margaret Mangan – Swords Yes, I think it is safe if they have an adult with them. I wouldn’t let them out without an adult, they’d have to be that little bit older – say twelve, but little kids need to have an adult with them.

George McDonald – Swords Yes as long as there is an adult with them, it’s tricky, I’d let them go on their own from about 12 or 13, younger than that, they’re probably too young to go on their own.

Noeleen McHugh – Raheny I’d probably let them go around 13 or 14 probably, I’d just be worried that they wouldn’t be safe and that they’d be approaching a house or a home of somebody that you wouldn’t know, so I suppose I would only let them trick or treat with neighbours and people I knew – that would be how I’d deal with it.

Carmel Savage – Swords I wouldn’t let them if they weren’t my own. But all the mothers nearly go with the kids nowadays, anyone that calls to me, the mother or a bigger person would be with them – they’re never on their own. You couldn’t let kids out now on their own.

Margaret Molloy – Swords I don’t know, our area hasn’t got enough children, there’s only one, but his mother would bring him, and he’d go if he saw fireworks or something – he’d be first there – but, he wouldn’t be allowed on his own. I think as long as they’re with their mother and they went up and down the houses, they’d be ok.

Ann Maguire – Rolestown Well I live out in the country and the roads are too dark, so not in a rural area like where I live. If I lived in suburbia yes, I would let them out with supervision, if they were really little I might go out with them. I just think if they’re close to bonfires and uncontrolled bonfires I would be pretty nervous.

Shay Byrne – Swords Well with an adult, but not on their own. I just don’t think it’s safe, it’s dark, they’re going to strange houses, and God knows who’s in there. So I think it’s important there is an adult. When my children went, I went with them. I suppose from 10 up, maybe 12 I’d let them go on their own, but definitely not as young children.

Colin Bale - Donabate Not really, not with things that happen these days. I’d let them go out if they were accompanied by an adult, but not on their own until they were around about 12 or 13 with a bit more sense.

The mission is to promote Franciscan College Gormanston as they work collaboratively to “create accountable and principled students” as has been the case for the past 60 years in Gormanston, and prior to that during the years in Multyfarnham.

Naul Man Is New Local Green Party Chairman Last week saw the opening of another chapter in the story of the Green Party in Dublin North, with the election of a new Chairman, John McGarry. After serving for over six years as Chairman, Lusk man Lorcan O’Toole decided to step down from the position. Born and raised in the Naul, and now living in Skerries for seven years, the new Chairman is an avid sportsman. He plays football and hurling with O’Dwyer’s, and used to play soccer for Glebe North. A

teacher and Gaelic Football coach at St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush, McGarry also plays with a traditional Irish music group. Following his election, the new chairman said, “I am very excited about taking on this new role. Firstly though, I want to acknowledge the huge contribution of our outgoing chairman, Lorcan O’Toole. He has shown steady leadership through a period, where there were ups and downs and now the local branch is looking in

healthy and vibrant shape, as we begin to face into the next general election.” He continued, “My first big task is to get the group prepared for the next election and the first step in that process will be selecting a General Election candidate. Trevor Sargent showed great leadership in his time, to not only the local branch, but to the Green Party nationally. I am confident that we can put a new candidate of equally high integrity to the people of Dublin North at the next General Election. To that end, we are making sure we are well prepared and I

can confirm there will be a selection convention before the end of November. Not surprisingly, there will be some competition for the nomination,” he said.

The EU’s Committee of the Regions has launched a European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) Award Scheme. This is targeted at any EU City or Region irrespective of size or wealth, but which has outstanding, futureoriented entrepreneurial strategies. It’s not about past achievements, but rather forward looking. It will be of interest to those who have plans to help business develop in its area. LEO, the revamped Local Enterprise Office based within the County Council here in Swords, has just hosted a very successful Enterprise week. We will watch with interest how

By Cathal Boland Fingal’s LEO performs in Europe. Across the EU, there is concern at the success of political parties which push an extreme right or left agenda. This seems to have some governm e n t s reassess t h e i r budgetary strategies. Both Italy and France have breached the budget target rules. There is even a report that Mrs Merkel intervened with the outgoing Commission President forcing him to soften his proposed letter of strong rebuke to Renzi the Italian PM. This did not stop the Italian from publishing the

letter and setting out battle lines before Barroso’s last Heads of Government meeting. Following changes and compromises, the new Commission was ratified last week. Juncker confirmed that his Commission would present proposals on a €300b stimulus package for jobs, growth and competitiveness by the end of the year. The Heads of State have charged the incoming Commissioner from Cyprus, C h r i s t o s Stylianides, with the task of co-ordinating Europe’s response to the Ebola crisis. This follows the Health Ministers agreeing the generality of airport screening for the virus. There are reports on the benefits which mobile phones can play in providing good information in tackling large scale crisis.

Health advice can be communicated directly, while the networks tracking systems can provide important information in understanding the movement of viruses such as Ebola across countries and continents. In doing so, it is important that an individual’s information is not used inappropriately and that personal data is not abused. Currently operators are slow in making their tracking information available to researchers, so epidemiologists are denied access to an important modern medium in fighting large scale epidemics. It may be that Commissioner Styianides will have this matter addressed in a revised Digital Strategy and then push for a global protocol to be established.

myself distracted. I hoped for nothing more than to learn something from Walking On Ripples, however, it is clear I was not up to the challenge. Maybe an English girl, with crabbing her only fishing experience, shouldn’t have committed to reading a book that explores Ireland through Fishing. Yet I

find David Murphy’s writing endearing. I would not hesitate to embark on one of his novels - it is a shame I couldn’t appreciate this memoir at its full potential. Needless to say, a reader with even a slight background in fishing will have a greater success. I’m sure, if you take up the challenge, you will not be disappointed.

Walking On Ripples: The Angling Life - A Review As a reader not native to Ireland, nor with fishing experience, I approached Walking On Ripples: The Angling Life with apprehension. And I was proved right. Author, David Murphy’s writing has previously

been described as ‘lyrical’, and in Walking On Ripples, it is clear to see why. The awardwinning author is not afraid to delve into great description and often does so with breathtaking success. However, he seam-

Rush Students ‘ E n g i n e e r T h e i r F u t u re ’

A group of female students from St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush, recently attended the “Engineering Your Future: Women in Engineering” conference in Dublin Castle last week. Fujitsu Ireland CEO, Regina Moran, a regular visitor to St Joseph’s was a keynote speaker at the event and was recently appointed President of Engineers Ireland. The audience of around 250 female secondary school students heard about the difference that engineering has made to Regina Moran’s life. As part of the conference, the Rush pupils had the opportunity to quiz volunteer engineers who visited their tables, students expressed their thoughts with graphics on large sheets of paper as they learned more about engi-

neering. The students also got the chance to make their views known in a stop-motion video afterwards. St Joseph’s Principal, Patricia Hayden said, “We are very grateful for the opportunity afforded to our students to attend and participate at the Women in Engineering conference. It has been immensely helpful in giving information to our students to encourage them to look at engineering as a career and perhaps we will see some of them here today go on to study engineering in the future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Regina Moran of Fujitsu Ireland for the friendship and support she has shown to students and staff of St Joseph’s in Rush. It is very much appreciated,” she said.

Skerries Group Thanks Lusk Parish A group of four who attend Skerries Community College, who recently returned from Lourdes, have extended their thanks to the parish of Lusk for their generosity. “I would like to express my extreme gratitude to all of Lusk Parish,” said Séamus Cummins, on behalf of the group. “Without your overwhelming contributions of €855, I do not think it would have been possible for our team of four to make it to Lourdes. it was a truly life changing experience for us and we all benefited greatly from helping the critically ill patients.” “We lit a candle for all in the parish and anyone who asked us to,” he continued. “I would like to express my thanks again from our four lads from Skerries Community College for the pilgrimage of a lifetime,” he concluded.

Praise For Malahide Man The group which organises the Malahide Park Run, have come together to say an extra thank you to local man, physio Gerard Tyrrell. He volunteers his expertise before each race to run a free warm up session for all race participants. A novice runner, who has just completed his fifth race, following Gerard’s routine, has said

that this had a huge effect on his ability to complete the race, stay injury free and recover effortlessly over the days that followed the race. “Gerard is one of many reasons that makes the Malahide Park Run such and enjoyable and confidence building experience, and a perfect event for beginners and experienced runners alike,” said

members of the local group. Tyrrell said, “The warm-up takes the form of an active warm-up, based on recent research. It focuses on activating and preparing specific muscle groups used in the running motion. It is pitched for all levels and anyone interested in taking part will benefit from it. In addition, I usually attempt to combine some educational aspects and gait improvement techniques.”

Unique Fundraising Challenge In Malahide The County Council and St. Michael’s House, one of Ireland’s largest providers of community based services for children and adults with an intellectual disability, last week announced a three-year walk and run campaign to fundraise for the charity. By 2016 it is hoped to raise €30,000 to purchase a wheelchair accessible bus for Abhainn Day Service in Swords. The first 10k charity event took place on Friday last in Malahide Park. The County Council Swords and Blanchardstown have chosen St. Michael’s House as their charity of choice for the next three years. In order to raise funds for people with intellectual disabilities, the Health and Safety Committee in the North County have devised a threeyear challenge, encouraging their staff to complete a 10k walk or run in each of the three years in aid of St. Michael’s House. Paul Reid, Chief

Executive of Fingal County Council said: “We are very pleased to select St. Michael’s House as a County Council charity. This three-year project allows our staff to actively get involved and support the local community. The challenge is big, but I’m sure that together, we can complete the three annual runs and provide a wheelchair accessible bus for Abhainn Day Service in Swords.” Abhainn is a day service for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and severe learning disability. The wheelchair accessible bus will be essential for bringing service users to and from their home and work. It will also benefit the community and have an important social inclusion aspect, as it will allow users to access a variety of local community outlets, such as Newbridge Park and local swimming pools.

Community Solidarity At It’s Best The ongoing fundraising campaign for the restoration of the ceiling at St Columba’s Church in Swords, was given a major boost last week. This came in the shape of the Roman Catholic community in Swords coming together to organise fundraising events over the past few months, in an effort to help this very worthy cause. In a heart-warming gesture of solidarity, and outstanding community spirit, the three Catholic parishes of St Cronan’s in Brackenstown, St Finian’s in River Valley, incorporating Dublin Airport parish and St Colmcille’s, incorporating Drynam Parish, decided to club together to raise funds. On Thursday last, a poignant evening prayer service was held in St Cronan’s Church, which was attended by a large gathering of parish-

Reilly Backs Rush Christmas Lights Campaign A campaign is about to get underway in Rush shortly, to ensure that the town has Christmas lights this year. Jeanette McNamara of the Rush Christmas Lights committee and local Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly TD, were both determined that Rush will have a spectacular display of Christmas lights this year, when they spoke to the County Leader last Friday. Jeanette McNamara said, The problem was caused when Eirgrid dug up the main street of the town. An unfortunate

consequence of this was the fact that Rush lost it’s many lovely trees on the main street, which took years to grow. As a result, the County Council replaced the trees, but gave us huge wooden boxes in which to plant trees. These were big ugly boxes, which were given

ately. We’ll have a great Christmas here in Rush,” he said. McNamara said, “Unfortunately, the wrong species of trees for a seaside town were planted in the boxes, which couldn’t contain the roots, so the trees started

to die. We hung all our Christmas lights on these trees last year, only to find that we lost all of the trees. This year, the town is in the situation that years of fundraising has been wiped out, and we have no lights and no money,” she said. She continued, “We have poles on which we hang blooming baskets in the summer time. We are going to have cones manufactured, which will fit on to the top of the poles, which will look nice, effectively they’re crowns, which will be lit, all down the main street. We hope to have close to 50 of them,” she said. The crowns will cost about €5,000 to have manufactured, which does not include lighting. The committee are launching a campaign, starting on 4th November, where they will send out a flyer to every home in Rush - about 3,500 homes. On it they will be asking the people to come together and light up the town. “The Council have been generous and gave us a tree and I was told they will give us €2,500. Our campaign is called ‘Let’s Light Up Rush Together’ and I’m confident that the locals will respond in a positive way,” she said. Minister Reilly concluded by saying, “I’m very supportive of this campaign, which is very important for Rush that the tradition of having lights down the Main Street is maintained. It is no fault of the committee that we find ourselves in this position. I welcome the fact that the Council are making a contribution, and let’s hope it is as generous as the spirit of Christmas allows.”

New Community ‘Walking Bus’ For Malahide Last Friday the local schools launched a new community Walking Bus to school in Malahide. In celebration, some of the children dressed up in Halloween costumes and joined in the “Freaky Friday Parade” to school. This bus predominately serves the children walking to St Andrews school and St Oliver Plunkett’s school. The organisers will be relaunching other routes to serve all school walkers in the area as soon as they can finalise routes. The Malahide Community Walking Bus is a

parent and child walking bus, whereby parents will accompany their child and hopefully have fun on the way. Students from Scoil Iosa have been involved with the project, and demonstrated great leadership by participating and helping the younger children on the morning, and in particular, the green schools teams are helped to promote this initiative in the village. The Road Safety Authority have donated high vis materials, so both kids and adults will be seen during the darker mornings. The initiative hopes to create an awareness of walking to school, and making it fun for everyone. It also gives the community an opportunity to identify what needs to be done to enable more safe walking to school.

IS YOUR CHIMNEY READY FOR WINTER? While keeping warm in winter is a very desirable way to be, it is also a life and death scenario for many people. This very realistic situation is all too prevalent during the long winter months ahead of us. Heating our homes is an expensive undertaking and many people, particularly the elderly, are forced to cut back on potentially life saving heat because of high costs. Fortunately here in the North County, we have a range of top quality options to choose from, in our efforts to stay warn and healthy. Nobody likes to hear that winter is well on its way, but making the transition to the big chill is much more bearable when your home is a cosy haven. We look at the different ways to heat your home and ensure you stay safe on the roads throughout the winter months.

Keep Cosy Hats are a great idea, as it is a well known fact that 75 per cent of your body heat escapes from your head. Layer your-

self with loose clothing rather than tight, as heat accumulates in the folds of the layers, keeping you much warmer than a tight sweater. You should wear slippers indoors but this will not help you if you have to go outside for any reason. you’ll just feel colder faster. Cover up with blankets if you are just sitting around watching TV or chatting in the living room. Candles can produce a lot of heat, but be mindful of where they are placed and do not leave them unattended. by radiated heat. For those with young children, oil column heaters offer a safe option, as the surface does not get hot enough to pose a threat and they can be left unattended or to heat a room overnight. The furnaces vary in type and style. Of course you can also adapt them to work with wood, coal or even oil.

working properly. If it is not, then valuable heat is being lost, with the consequent loss of money. If you need to have your gas boiler serviced, or make your central heating more efficient, contact an approved service agent. From a safety point of view, it is very important to use a recommended service agent, as they will have completed a safety training programme which conforms to Irish standards, and will have insurance.

Solid Fuel Heaters There is arguably nothing more homely than an open fire for atmosphere in the winter months. People will automatically gravitate to it for both warmth and security. You will often hear people say that you will never be alone, as long as you have an open fire in the house. People will sit down and stare into a fire for hours, bewildered by the constant jumping of the flames and watching the fire

devour itself. It has an almost hypnotic effect on people. However, an open fire has a downside in as much as it can be not very cost effective, as much of the heat disappears up the chimney.

Windows and Doors While it is important that the door looks good, it is more important that it is suitable to keep you safe and warm during the winter months when snow, sleet and gales batter it. The draughts we spoke

about earlier are more likely to be noticed around windows and doors: however modern doors and windows, whether PVC or traditional wood, will eliminate this problem and add to your comfort. Luckily there are a number of top quality suppliers of windows and doors in the North County.

excluder or stuff a towel at the bottom of the doors. Close off any unused rooms, as the closed door makes that room another barrier between you and the wicked cold weather. It also stops air from circulating as much, which reduces heat loss. Put up sets of heavy curtains these can block drafts on both windows and doors. Open them when the sun is shining to help pull in the solar heat into your house and close them when it gets cloudy or dark outside to better keep the heat in.

Car Safety Winter is upon us, and winter driving comes

with it. While safety is an important consideration all year long, there are certainly

some auto maintenance jobs and safety checks that are specific to chilled air and winter driving that are a good idea to check into before we’re knee

deep in the season. These winter maintenance tips will keep you out of trouble:

Winter is not the time to get cheap about your tyres, so take the time to check the tread depth. Also, be sure to check your tyre pressure. They lose a little

pressure when it gets cold, so pump ‘em up. It takes wipers that are in top shape to keep your windshield clean and safe. On top of the checks you need to perform to ensure safe winter driving, now’s a good time to do some annual maintenance. Regularly treating your battery to a cleaning can keep electrical gremlins at bay. Brakes are not a good area to cut corners. Be sure your brakes have enough meat left to get you through the season. Cold weather safety should be a concern for anybody living in a cold climate. These tips will give you the upper hand when Old Man Winter tries to put a chill on your winter travels.

Antifreeze Now is the time to stock up on a bottle or two, and fill your car up sooner rather than later. It’ll be too late on that morning you’re in a rush and only realise there’s a thick sheet of ice on your windscreen once you arrive at your car. You don’t want to put yourself in a position where you feel you have to then rush to your destination. Also, remember to

have an ice scraper and de-icer handy. You are likely to be able to pick these items up from a local petrol station or a hardware store on your nearest high street.

Brakes Brakes, as you know, are of critical importance. Stopping distance can be heavily compromised this season, so the functionality and sensitivity of the brakes is crucial to the safety level of the vehicle. It’s worth taking them to a nearby garage to have them checked in the next couple of weeks.

Aer Lingus Regional’s Leeds Bradford Service ‘Takes Off’ The Dublin to Leeds route will be serviced by the airline’s newest aircraft which were delivered brand new in June this year and will operate from Aer Lingus’ T2 hub at Dublin Airport. This is the first time in 14 years that Aer Lingus will operate a Dublin to Leeds service and the schedule has been

designed to accommodate a day return for business and leisure passengers, offering convenient morning and evening flights. Boarding the inaugural flight at Dublin Airport, Mr Julian Carr, Managing Director, Stobart Air said that bookings have been strong since adding Leeds to the Aer Lingus Regional route

network earlier this year. “Over 5,000 seats have been sold on the new Leeds Bradford route and we continue to add key UK destinations to ensure we provide choice, value and convenience for our customers. Aer Lingus Regional serves 13 major UK cities from Ireland and are on track to carry 1.31

million passengers this year,” he said. Last week, Leeds Bradford recorded the highest level of demand for connections to the US (via Dublin) out of all the 13 UK regions served by Aer Lingus Regional. Vincent Harrison, Managing Director , Dublin Airport said that the new route offers additional choice to

passengers travelling between Ireland and Britain and also provides easy connections onto Dublin Airport’s expanding long-haul network. ‘Dublin Airport executives would be “working closely with Aer Lingus Regional to promote the new service to Leeds Bradford and also the huge potential for onward connections at Dublin Airport,” Mr Harrison said.

A new resource www.Eatright.eu designed to help early school leavers around the North County learn skills in healthy eating and food safety, has been launched by safefood, and is the first free online resource specifically designed with early school leavers in mind. With up to one in five teenagers leaving school early, this can impact negatively on their longer-term health, according to those involved in the new website. Gerry Griffin, National Co-ordinator Youthreach, the full-time training programme for early school leavers in the Republic of Ireland said: “This website is a great opportunity for our staff to deliver life skills training around food and hygiene, in a way that is engaging, empowering and relevant to the needs of local young people in society.” Dr Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, Director, Human Health and Nutrition, safefood added: “We know from speaking with early school leavers from around the locality, that their diets and levels of physical activity are of real concern to them. ‘Eatright.eu’ was developed with the input of young people and their trainers and was piloted with them.” www.Eatright.eu includes team and individual projects, online games, videos and posters as well as recipes. The programme complements nutrition related curriculum in early school leaver settings in a way that meets the specific nutrition needs of this group, taking the range of abilities, literary and attendance aspects into account.

Tips For Local Motorists During Mid Term Holidays With the local school mid-term holidays now in full swing, an Irish roadside assistance company has some simple tips for parents around the North County to help avoid a potential motoring breakdown while on the road. Allianz Global Assistance, has compiled a ‘Motoring Checklist’ that encourages local drivers to take some precautionary steps before travelling during the midterm break. Roland Hesse, the Country Manager for Allianz Global Assistance said: “With families around the locality perhaps

really make your dog feel anxious, and if left outside, might try to escape from fear. Another very important tip is to ensure your dog is microchipped, that way if your dog does get lost, he can be scanned and returned home safely,” she said. Dogs Trust has issued some further simple tips for local dog owners to help make the firework season less stressful; walk your dogs before it gets dark, keep the treats and sweets away. Give your dog a Kong, jam packed with tasty goodies, which will help keep them distracted. Chewing helps release endorphins for your dog, which in turn leaves them feeling much happier. Provide a safe

hiding place indoors for your dog to rest. A nice cosy bed to cuddle up in or a crate where they can tuck themselves away in and relax. Make sure your dog has access to this place throughout the week so that they don’t feel too overwhelmed. Don’t force your dog to wear costumes. All this dressing up can be frightening for your dog and remember that he/she might not be used to seeing you dressed up with a funny hat, or silly beard - so take caution not to frighten your dog with your attire. Feed your furry friend before the fireworks begin, that way they can settle down for the evening without all the strange noises putting them off their food.

Ensure Your Dog Is Safe This Halloween With Halloween fast approaching and the all too familiar sound of popping fireworks, bangers and noise may cause your pooch to cower under the table in fear. Dogs Trust are offering you a few tricks to ensure local dog owners around the North County that their dogs are safe this Halloween. While Halloween can be great fun for the whole family, it can be a very traumatising time for your pet. “The most important safety tip we can give dog owners is to keep your dog indoors,” Kathrina Bentley, Head of Communications and Campaigns Dogs Trust, explains. “The fireworks, ‘Trick or Treaters’ and constant doorbell ringing can

heading off on a short get-away across the water or a ‘staycation’ during the mid-term, planning ahead is key in minimising the stress of car trouble during precious holiday time.” “Basic checks, such as ensuring the oil and water levels are sufficient and confirming that the spare tyre is in good condition, will go a long way in avoiding those potential breakdowns. With the evenings now longer as the clocks have gone back, it is also highly recommended to check that all bulbs in the vehicle are in good working order,” he said.” He added: “Bringing details with you of your roadside assistance and if abroad, travel insurance cover, and storing important telephone numbers in your mobile phone will also mean important information will be to hand in the case of a breakdown.”

O’Dwyers GAA Club in Balbriggan recently held their successful ‘Sponsored Walk Solo & Puck,’ event, one of their most important fundraisers of the year, in order to open a training fund for members. Funds raised will be used to contribute to the running costs incurred by teams during the winter months. As parents completed 12 laps of their sponsored walk, the young players practised their skills on the field. Back in the clubhouse, a feast was laid on and younger members were given posters to colour in as they had hot dogs, soup and sandwiches. It was a great day with a fantastic turnout, with all teams coming together for a great family fun.

Local RNLI Reindeer Run Returns Due to popular demand, the RNLI Reindeer Run returns this year to raise funds for the RNLI and its volunteer lifeboat crews in around the North County and beyond. The charity event encourages people to have fun while supporting the RNLI in their work, saving lives at sea. This year the Reindeer Run is being held on Sunday 30th November at Marlay Park, Rathfarnham in Dublin, with a Santa Saunter, 1.5km and 3km Rookie Runs for younger participants and 5km and 10km routes for runners and walkers. Registration for the event is now open. Volunteer lifeboat crew members, Lorcan Dignam and Gerry Canning from Skerries RNLI along with Alex Carthy (6yrs) from Malahide, Hugh Canning (7yrs) and Rookie the Reindeer helped launch the Reindeer Run. Adding his voice to the call for local people to sign up for the Reindeer Run, Skerries RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew member Gerry Canning said, “The RNLI has been very busy this year and the demand for our services sees us helping many people off our coast. It’s not just people in boats that we help, but everyone who uses the water, including swimmers, kayakers and people who get cut off by rising tides. Funds raised by the public go to support our training, kit and equipment.” Last year, Dublin lifeboats launched a total 124 times and brought 166 people to safety, 18 of those were young people. Registration is now open at rnli.org/reindeer.
