“ I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. Mary Anne Radmacher

InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort

This month, we help you escape the southern hemisphere winter, which feels like its going to be a real cold one, and pack you off to the warmer climes of the northern hemisphere – our focus is on Europe and North America. Disneyland Paris continues our glimpse in to the magical world of Disney. If you’re a foodie like myself, we have something new in this edition that’s going to tempt and tantalise your tastebuds! ‘On the Menu’ brings together two of my favourite things – travel and food. Explore cuisines from across the globe whilst we showcase some spectacular culinary tours and a few quirky little titbits’!

FROM THE EDITOR

Also, we are pleased to be bringing you not one but TWO fantastic feature properties this month – Hotel Jen in Brisbane and Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam. Each of these amazing properties are offering deals exclusive to Turbulence readers. Be sure to check them out. If you see something you like in Turbulence or there is something you would like to see, please make sure you let us know either by email or via social media. It saddens me that tragedies continue to plague the world at the moment, in particular the recent terror attack in Garissa, Kenya, that claimed 148 lives. All but six of them were students, young people simply pursuing their ambition for a better life. Then, when things can’t seem to get any more horrific, Boko Haram militants disguised as preachers massacred 24 villagers and set fire to their homes. In the wake of Garissa another student has lost their life and 141 have been injured during a stampede at Nairobi Universtity’s Kikuyu campus, when an exploding electrical transformer was mistaken for yet another attack. This is what happens when you have communities living in constant fear. My thoughts go out to the families whose lives have been and continue to be shattered by these senseless and evil acts of violence. If you feel as sickened as I do, I encourage you to voice your outrage and concern to the United Nations via social media (@UN on Twitter). Speak out, because we are world citizens, and can no longer just watch idly from the sidelines. As always, happy reading.

THAT JEN FEELING The Hotel Jen concept offers travellers greater flexibility to blend the boundaries between business and leisure, supported by an authentic, ‘informed and friendly’ service style that allows guests to discover the best of Brisbane’s outgoing culture and relaxed Aussie attitude in one of Australia’s hippest cities, without undue fuss. The Hotel Jen experience is reflective of the changing demands of today’s customers, both the new, more independentlyminded, ‘millennial’ mindset and the ever increasingly social and mobile enabled ‘young-atheart’ traditional customer. Guests enter the hotel via a ‘graffiti’ mural entrance, commissioned and designed by local Brisbane artists, before enjoying

a free welcome drink at reception. Easy, fuss-free efficiency is supported by cutting-edge technology throughout the premises, with fast, free WiFi everywhere, always; mobile charging devices to keep your devices on the go and a smart phone app that enables guests to checkin before they arrive, and order services including food, beverages and even spa treatments. Home comforts include laundry wash and fold service at one price for unlimited items in the laundry bag; a PressReader app with free access to 2,500 publications, replacing the traditional morning paper; and free coffee and snack-box-togo options after breakfast. For added convenience, the hotel features a vending machine with beverage

and snack items priced at convenience store levels. Outside the building a Hotel Jen ‘Coffee Cube’ - a repurposed shipping container - will shake up the Roma Street commuter and business trade by serving organic coffee and ‘OnTheGo’ food selections. The hotel also boasts a 6th floor terrace organic ‘SkyGarden’, growing over 20 vegetables and herbs, which the kitchen uses on a daily basis, and is the home to two bee-hives producing a ‘multi-floral’ honey as a result of the biodiversity in the Roma Street Parklands located just nearby. The honey is spun on-site and used for cooking and guests’ enjoyment. On site Nest Restaurant + Bar offers an east meets west style menu and a range of creative cocktails,

craft beers on tap and a selection of boutique wines. Hotel Jen Brisbane is located on Roma Street, in the heart of the central business district of Brisbane and adjacent to the Brisbane Transit Centre, the city’s central transportation hub. Brisbane Airport is just 15 kilometres away and accessible directlyfrom the hotel. Both the domestic and international airport terminals are serviced by the on-site ‘Air Train’ which with the Roma Street train station adjacent to the hotel, makes travel to and from the hotel a seamless service. USA 14 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 04 | 2015

There’s nothing that can be written to sum up the United States of America. An enormous country stretching roughly 3,000 miles (4,800km) from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, the US prides itself on being a melting pot of cultures from all over the world, and every big city in the country has its own Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Somalia, or Little Italy. These enormous cities, including New York City, Los Angeles,Chicago and San Francisco, offer world-class museums, shopping, restaurants and nightlife that have to be experienced to be believed.

The US is a fairly young country, but its history is proudly displayed in monuments and museums; travellers can see the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the tea party ships in Boston, the iconic Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, and even view the Declaration of Independence in Washington DC’s National Archives. It isn’t all cities and sidewalks in the US, though; the vast plains contain a wealth of natural beauty, ranging from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the calm serenity of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters, the rugged Pacific coast of Californiato

the endless ‘Big Sky Country’ of Montana. Natural attractions are scattered throughout, including the ‘Old Faithful’ geyser in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park, the giant redwoods of California, and Niagara Falls in upstate New York. Whether skiing in the Colorado Rockies, sunning on a Miami beach, or climbing to the top of the Statue of Liberty, a holiday in the US presents endless possibilities in the land of opportunity.

EXPERIENCE FIFTY MILLENNIA OF ABORIGINAL TRADITION

The First Peoples of Australia have the world’s oldest culture still alive today. The art, music, dance and way of life have remained almost unchanged for tens of thousands of years. Today, Aboriginal art is highly sought after both domestically and on the world stage. Art Series Hotel Group last year even launched The Watson in Adelaide, a beautiful artist sanctuary and boutique hotel dedicated to the work of indigenous artist Tommy Watson. To experience Australia’s indigenous culture for yourself, you’ll have to get off the beaten track. The top tourist destinations are the Top End, the Red Centre and the Kimberleys. If travelling to remote and outback Australia, make sure you speak to your Sean Simmons Travel Expert. Outback touring takes careful planning and should be done through a reputable touring company. Doing it yourself is difficult if you don’t have your own vehicle as many of the roads are unsealed – so you can’t take your rental vehicle even if it is built for the terrain. However, don’t let that put a damper on your sense of adventure.

This month, we showcase an amazing 12 day adventure taking you from Darwin all the way to Broome and make sure you check out next month as we highlight some fantastic Red Centre adventures.

The blueprints for the holiday destination of Disneyland may have been developed in the United States, but the world’s favourite theme park concept has transported exceedingly successfully to Europe. Situated 20 miles (32km) east of Paris, Disneyland Paris (also known as EuroDisney) is a vast complex of hotels, restaurants and shops together with the exciting theme park. Those in the know have it that Europe’s Disneyland is actually better than its US counterparts, boasting more modern technology and existing in the ambit of less control and different safety regulations. Then, too, EuroDisney has also unavoidably picked up a European flavour which adds charm and intimacy to the entire experience.

20 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 04 | 2015

Disneyland Paris Travel Guide EuroDisney actually consists of two theme parks: the Disneyland Park, based on California’s iconic Magic Kingdom, boasts 42 awesome attractions, drawing thousands of holidaymakers every year; the Walt Disney Studios was built more recently and follows the trend of the Disney MGM Studios in Florida, USA, using movie-like settings for its thrill rides and experiences. Adults and children alike become enchanted and enthralled as they explore fantasy neighbourhoods bristling with Disney characters, and stop to take in the spectacle of the day and night parades. Most visitors come to EuroDisney on a package deal that includes onsite hotel accommodation and passes to enjoy the shows and attractions. At least two days are required to make the most of the Disney magic, and there will still be plenty left for a second visit! Holiday Shopping Holidaymakers should make sure they take plenty of spare cash to Disneyland Paris if shopping is their passion, because besides offering thrilling entertainment, the resort also offers one of the largest, glitziest shopping centres in Europe, in the form of the Val d’Europ. Shoppers will need to hop in a taxi, or ride one stop on the train, to access this centre which consists

of acres of outlet stores, known as La Vallee, and a vast two-storey mall. Buy anything from designer fashion to a toothbrush! Restaurants Apart from numerous restaurants in the Disneyland Paris hotels, the holiday park offers dozens of eateries, from full-service French restaurants, to hotdog stands. The cuisine is mostly fast-food family fare, but there are also plenty of quality restaurants to tempt the palate and dent the pocket. The most difficult aspect of dining in Disneyland is deciding on where and what to eat, so vast is the choice. Holiday Activities Disneyland Paris is a pleasure resort of the first order, designed to entertain, enchant and delight holidaymakers. Wander down Main Street USA, take a steam train ride, hike over to Frontierland and ride the thrilling Thunder Mountain, or rock and roll on the Pirates of the Carribbean ship. The thrills and spills are endless. During the afternoon and evenings there are stunning fantasy parades to watch, and the night sky is often jewelled with fireworks displays. In addition various theatres and performance venues offer live shows. Opening hours are usually from 9am to 10pm in peak season, with opening and closing hours moved up an

hour or so during winter. Any Negatives? Queues in summer can be very long and trying for impatient children (and adults). The prices are also very steep, even by European standards, and parents should take this into account. Opening hours: Disneyland® Paris is open every day all year round. Opening hours vary depending on the season. The parks may remain open for longer during special events season. Standard schedules: Disneyland Park: 10am-10pm; Walt Disney Studios: 10am-7pm. Note Certain shows, attractions, entertainment, shops and restaurants are only open at certain times of the season and can be closed, modified, postponed or cancelled without notice.

AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST 24 | TURBULENCE March 2015

Welcome to the third and final instalment of our special report on Sunrise Children’s Villages. The title, words made famous by Benjamin Franklin, have never been truer for this incredible organisation. On May 27, Sunrise will officially open its new $240,000 Learning Centre – a six-classroom facility that is set to provide free education to more than 500 children from the villages and communities that neighbour Sunrise in Phnom Penh. Ms Cox said the Learning Centre is set to play a key role in strengthening Sunrise’s Community Outreach Program. “Our plan is to work with the local communities - teachers, principals and parents - to provide training and help increase the standard of education for as many Cambodian children as possible,” Ms Cox said. The Learning Centre will be fully equipped with a computer lab, library and new furnishing and fittings. It will have the potential to offer children from PreSchool to Grade 12 with access to Khmer, English, IT, music, art, sports and dance classes. Eight years ago, Sievhieng’s life changed forever when she was referred in to the care of Sunrise – an NGO that works with impoverished and at-risk Cambodian families and their communities to break the cycle of poverty by providing residential care, education, health care and access to life changing resources like clean drinking water.

For Sievhieng, the memory of living below the poverty line, not being able to attend school and the desperation of not knowing where her family’s next meal would come from is something she hasn’t forgotten. “Before living in Sunrise I stayed with my family in my family’s province (but) they could not support me to study,” she said. “They were desperate and just for the food and support to us, so I couldn’t study.” It is estimated that more than one million Cambodians live below the poverty line, earning less than $1 a day. A further 1.9 million Cambodians don’t have access to clean drinking water. Unfortunately there are many families like Sievhieng’s which find themselves having to compromise their children’s education in order to save money and help make ends meet. As Sunrise this year celebrates its 21st anniversary, Sunrise Founder Geraldine Cox and Australia Cambodia Foundation Chairman Kevin Tutt are keen to ensure the organization continues to provide Cambodian children and residents from its surrounding communities with the support and means to break the

Though Lim’s sister reached out and provided the family with a space to live, Lim again found herself struggling to make ends meet when she was hospitalized with a severe stomach illness.

Sunrise also provided Siev An with a new bicycle that she and her siblings use to travel to school each day, as well as several book packs containing stationary, notepads, school uniforms and study supplies. Siev An and her siblings are currently attending school on a regular basis and achieving good grades.

After learning of Lim’s plight, Sunrise provided the family with a number of emergency food parcels as part of its Community Outreach Program and organised for Lim to seek immediate medical treatment for her illness.

THE WORLD’S RICHEST BOWLS EVENT HITS THE GOLD COASt

Did you know Sean Simmons Travel is the preferred travel partner for Bowls Australia, the national sporting body for lawn bowls? In the coming year’s plenty of flights will be boarded to Coolangatta with the biggest international bowling events all being staged on the Gold Coast. Bowls Australia’s most prestigious tournament the Australian Open has been revamped, relocated and is now the world’s richest bowls event featuring a monstrous $225,000 in prize money and will kick start the bowling festivities on the Gold Coast for the next five year’s. Relocating to the Gold Coast will see the theme park capital of Australia become the new home for the nation’s most lucrative tournament in its 11th year; and the Broadbeach Bowling Club is where most of the action will be happening during the 13 day festival of bowls. The prospect of a two week vacation on the Gold Coast combined with the chance to play in a world class bowls event is expected to draw in almost 4000 participants from around the globe. The buzz about this year’s Australian Open is spreading globally with entries pouring in from Hong Kong, New Zealand, Thailand, Scotland, South Africa, Papua New Guinea, USA, England and Singapore. Many participants are viewing the Australian Open as an opportunity to take their family on a vacation and in between competing in Australia’s most prestigious bowls event, enjoy everything the Gold Coast has to offer.

28 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 04 | 2015

The Australian Open will coincide with one of the beachside precinct’s biggest free events – the Broadbeach Country Music Festival, from June 19-21, featuring The McClymonts, Beccy Cole, Catherine Britt and James Blundell. The great news for people travelling long distances to be part of this world class event is that by entering all three disciplines (singles, pairs and fours), you are guaranteed seven games in the first six days of sectional play and of course the large prize pool on offer could just turn your vacation into an all-expenses paid holiday! If there’s one thing about the Gold Coast, the region is not lacking accommodation options and with all the clubs within 20 minutes of Broadbeach planning your vacation is simple; and as a popular tourist destination, there is an endless amount of fun to be had on your days off. The Gold Coast bowling community are very proud to be hosting a world class event in their backyard and will get the first of many opportunities to showcase some of the world’s best bowling greens and facilities to the rest of the world. In a major coup for the sport nationally, the Gold Coast has now procured both of the sport’s eminent international events on the horizon, the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2020 World Bowls Championships, as well the sport’s most lucrative open tournament in the Australian Open, which will award more than $1,125,000 in prize money and attract more than 20,000 participants over its five year duration. As a consequence of securing the sport’s pinnacle events, a number of ancillary international events will also head to the Gold Coast in the preceding years.

the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships, the Southern Hemisphere’s qualifying event for the World Bowls Championships. Thousands of competitors, volunteers and spectators will all flock to the beautiful Gold Coast, not only enjoying a spectacle of bowls but the sun, sand and surf on some of the most pristine beaches in the world will also get plenty of traffic, even if it is the middle of winter! Winter (June - August) on the Gold Coast is generally sunny and dry whilst June also marks the beginning of whale watching season, (a great activity for your days off bowls). Many Australians escape the cooler weather in the southern states for a holiday in Queensland at this time of year and this is where Bowls Australia expects to secure plenty of entries from the travelling bowlers that head north each winter. The humidity is lower, there is less rain, and the temperature is still warm; perfect conditions for bowling! Bowls is a great social sport that saw almost 400,000 people participating in social comps or barefoot bowls last year; the competitive side of the sport is getting younger and younger with the average age of the Australian Jackaroos (national team) just 29. If you’re going to be on the Gold Coast between June 13 and 25, why not call in to the Broadbeach Bowling Club one afternoon and see some of the world’s best bowlers in action. With 1927 bowling clubs across the country, along your travels there will always be a bowling club nearby ready to welcome you in for a friendly game!

The annual Trans-Tasman test series between Australia and New Zealand will take place on the coast for a three-year period, from 2017-2019, in addition to

Travel information & Industry News SKYTRAX REVEALS WORLD’S BEST AIRPORTS It was Skytrax’s night of nights with its Passenger Choice Awards held in Paris last month. It was a big competition to judge, and, almost unsurprisingly, Singapore’s Changi Airport came in as the world’s favourite airport. Incheon International Airport came in with the silver, while Munich Airport pulled the bronze. In the Aussie stakes, it was Brisbane Airport first, ranked at number 20 in the world, a jump from 23 in 2014, with Sydney Airport smoking right behind it at number 21. Melbourne Airport clocked in at number 25, dropping one place from the previous year.

The ranking is based on a customer satisfaction survey on 550 airports with submissions by over 13 million passengers around the world.

Taipei, with quality performance across a range of areas, from customer service and airport guides, to staff in shops, restaurants and security.

The survey asks passengers to evaluate airports on 39 factors of airport experience such as check-in, border clearance efficiency, signage, transportation availability, design, layout, shopping, service and dining options.

Brisbane brought it home with the best airport staff in the Asia/Pacific region, and, unfortunately, no Aussie airports made the list for world’s best airport security. Maybe next year.

The world’s cleanest airport was Incheon, while Paris CDG was voted the world’s most improved airport – way to go Paris! And when it comes to the world’s best airport staff, travellers can rely on Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in

AUSSIE FEMALES DON’T NEED NO MAN; TRAVEL SOLO TripAdvisor has marked International Women’s Day with a refreshing survey, showing solo female travellers are on the rise. The Women’s Travel Survey, which looked at over 9000 women globally, and almost 2000 women from Down Under, showed that independent travel is on the up and up. A massive 44% of Aussie women say they’ve travelled solo in the past, compared to 33% in 2014, and unsurprisingly, the women of Australia, along with the ladies of UK, rank among the most independent female travellers in the world. 81% of Aussie lasses say they’re planning to travel alone this year, with just shy of half squeezing in between two and four solo getaways in 2015.

For those who love a bit of airport shopping, Heathrow Airport was recognised for having the world’s finest, followed by Singapore Changi, Hong Kong and Dubai. For more info on where your beloved home airport stands in world rankings, check out the results on SKYTRAX WORLD AIRPORT AWARDS.

The top destinations for women to hit up alone included London as number one, followed by New York, Paris, Bali and Singapore. In our own backyards, women are keen to visit Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and Hobart. On top of solo travel, Aussie women are also taking more female-only getaways, with half of the respondents saying they enjoy visiting and doing the same things on holidays, as well as wanting to “re-connect” with friends. And as strong, independent women who don’t need no man, research is king when it comes to booking a holiday. 91% of Aussie women read online hotel reviews, while 65% turn to travel websites for hotel price comparison.

And the top reason for independent female travel? The freedom of doing whatever they want, an answer that ranked around 56%.

Good user reviews influenced 87% of women in their accommodation choices, meaning that online reputations are now more important than ever for travel companies.

Taking precautions, however, was also high on the agenda for Aussie women taking to travel independently, with the majority of women avoiding going out late at night (69%), avoiding quiet streets (42%), and not sticking out by looking like a tourist (44%).

Sean Simmons Travel has these tips for women embarking on solo travel:

“It’s important to plan well – the better prepared you are, the safer and more enjoyable your travel will be,” they said.

Always take out appropriate travel insurance; make sure your insurance covers you for all of your activities for the entire length of your trip.

TRAVEL TIPS Self driving europe

34 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 04 | 2015

If you have the extra time, can pack a bit more patience and have an extensive collection of driving music, self-drive tours may be one of the most amazing and unique ways to see the side of your destination not found on any tourist map. The trick is determining if hiring a car is the best option, finding the right vehicle for your trip and navigating the fine print in rental agreements.

Need vs Want If you’re going to be spending a lot of time driving, it may be worth spending a little extra and getting something comfortable. Your body will more than likely thank you for it later. If you are travelling with kids, you will definitely want something a little roomier for those long trips. On the flipside, decide whether splurging on a luxury car is really necessary. Take in to consideration where you’re driving to, how long you’ll be spending on the road – and if you have kids prone to car sickness. As for convertibles – make sure you check the weather. Your Thelma and Louise style fantasy of long open roads with the top down might be ruined if you find you’re travelling in the wrong season for it.

UPDATES & NEWS VIRGIN AUSTRALIA LANDING USHERS NEW SERVICE FOR ALICE SPRINGS A water cannon salute welcomed Virgin Australia as it jetted into the Red Centre on its inaugural flight on Monday morning. It is hoped the new Adelaide-Alice-Springs-Darwin service will bring with it much-needed competition to the route and lower prices. In a press conference at the airport, Chief Minister Adam Giles said he was excited to see Virgin touch down in the Centre. “I have been in talks with Virgin Australia for some time about expanding their Territory footprint and I’m excited to see this become a reality,” he said. “The added competition on this route is great news for travellers, putting downward pressure on ticket prices.” .Virgin Australia chief commercial officer Judith Crompton was one of the VIPs travelling on the first flight from Darwin. She said Alice Springs residents could expect airfares on these routes to reduce by about 25 per cent. “Typically when we enter any new market we see airfares dropping between 20-30 per cent,” she said. “We see that this market would be absolutely no different to that strategy that we have deployed through other parts of the country.” Alice Springs Mayor Damien Ryan was at the airport to welcome the airline to Alice Springs. “When another carrier comes into the marketplace, that can only benefit our community. It assists us with tourism and it assists us with business,” he said. “For that reason any carrier has got to be a great economic boost in our community. It gives local choice. Now that choice is there.”

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES COMPLIMENTARY FOOD ON ALL DOMESTIC FLIGHTS Virgin Australia recently launched complimentary food on all flights across the Australian domestic network. The roll out of free food and checked baggage on all domestic flights will complement the free inflight entertainment. This is another proof point for Virgin Australia as part of its transformation into a premium, full service airline.

Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti made the announcement in Tamworth at the beginning of March, where he was joined by the NSW Deputy Premier, the Member for Tamworth, the Mayor of Tamworth, Councillors and members of the business community. The airline will introduce this new service on 25 May 2015, using its ATR-72 Turboprop 68-seat aircraft. NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant welcomed today’s announcement: “This is really terrific news that will benefit hundreds of people living and visiting Tamworth and the wider New England region.” Virgin Australia will operate a return flight every day (excluding Saturday) departing Sydney at 1.55pm arriving into Tamworth at 3.00pm. The flight will depart Tamworth at 3.30pm arriving into Sydney at 4.35pm. Fares are now available for sale with special Saver fares from Tamworth to Sydney.

The food and beverage service has been tailored to the time of day and the duration of the journey, a great example of Virgin Australia’s customer insight led approach which continues to underpin all of the exciting initiatives that have shaped the airline in to what it is today. Virgin Australia continues to offer complimentary tea, coffee, juice and water on all flights, complimentary wine, beer and soft drink served in ‘Happy Hour’ between 5 and 7pm Monday to Friday as well as alternative food and beverage options through the popular on-board Retail Menu.
