Welcome to another exciting edition of Turbulence. 新春快乐 Kung Hei Fat Choy! Welcome to our February edition of Turbulence!!

FROM THE EDITOR

The “Year Of The Monkey” is here, and although those born under the sign of The Monkey are characterised as lively, quick-witted, mischievous and innovative, the year itself is believed to be one of the most unlucky in the Chinese calendar. I certainly hope that if there is any bad luck, that it steers clear of the travel industry, although there are some dark clouds on the horizon! As we are all aware, one of those clouds is the Zika virus that has appeared, as if from nowhere, and has the press in an absolute frenzy of confusion and misinformation! The only reliable source of information on this, and any other virus, is the Center For Disease Control & Prevention website – www. cdc.gov or www.cdc.gov/zika if you want the direct link. There appears no reason for anyone to consider cancelling their travel plans at this stage, except for pregnant women. Please do let us know if you have any concerns or require further information, as our team of experts are kept up to date with daily bulletins. What do we have for you this month? Spotlight on the land of the long white cloud – New Zealand, with adventure high on the agenda on the North Island, and some fantastic skiing deals down south! Don’t miss out on the early bird ski specials! Our friends at World Journeys have sliced 5% off some of their top selling trips / destinations exclusively for Turbulence readers, so if you are keen to see the Cherry Blossoms in Japan, sample the gastronomic delights of Bhutan (read our own travel experts personal report on pages 30-32), party down in South America or get to Cuba before the US stampede begins, check out pages 20-21 for all the details! Looking for a short break to Queensland? Get a free night when you book 7 or more at a great selection of properties as featured on pages 22-23! AND THERES MORE – HEAPS MORE So, without any further delay…… Happy Reading (And remember – we value any and all feedback you may have on this issue, so please, keep those emails coming!!)

Best time to visit New Zealand The weather in New Zealand is fairly temperate all year round, though the south of the country gets cold in the winter. The western sides of the islands tend to be very rainy, while the eastern parts are shielded from ocean winds by the mountain ranges. Most locals and overseas tourists take a New Zealand holiday in December, January and February, crowding most beach destinations. The best time to visit New Zealand is in spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) when the temperatures are moderate.

DESTINATION

NEW ZEALAND

Travel Money Guide NZ may be a close neighbour and one that has similar values and culture to us here in Australia, but travelling to New Zealand means thinking about the right travel money to take. Choosing the right travel money will depend on whether you are travelling for business or for pleasure. The business traveller is likely to have a different set of needs for travel money than someone who is backpacking around the country.

16 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

Travel card, credit card, or debit cards? It’s important to take the right form of travel money to New Zealand because you may incur unnecessary costs as well as suffering additional security risks without the best travel money option. We all get annoyed at the cost of using ATM machines when we withdraw money from a machine which charges a fee for a withdrawal; this can be multiplied times over if you are not careful with your choice of travel money when travelling in New Zealand. Deciding how to take money to New Zealand requires careful planning. Whether you’re doing a quick business trip or taking a long holiday, it’s good to have a couple of ways to access your money. Choose a mix that suits your needs, for example, a bank traveller card for regular spending with a credit card for emergencies or taking cash in the form of New Zealand currency, supplemented by a debit card. Whatever mix you make, you want to have enough New Zealand currency in your pockets when touring New Zealand – even if it’s enough for the first couple of days in New Zealand.

Using a travel card in New Zealand A travel card can be a great way to travel to New Zealand, but there are pros and cons that need to be considered. The benefits of a travel card includes the security of not carrying around too much cash as well as the benefit of locking in the exchange rate as soon as you load up your card. There is a disadvantage however if you apply all your travel budget to the travel card. You should probably have at least two different ways to access your money when overseas, just to keep your options open and make sure you’re never stranded without funds. On the other hand, travellers’ cheques have the added security of needing ID to be cashed. Plus, if they get lost

or stolen, they can be replaced in a few days. There is usually a fee for purchasing and cashing traveler’s cheques, so check these out too.

Lock in an exchange rate One of the key benefits of the travel card is the advantage of locking in the exchange rate for the funds that you ‘load’ on to the card before you go. There will be no unexpected currency variations for each transaction as long as you have the currency you are using loaded on the card. You need to be careful however, as if you run out of a currency that you have loaded on to the card, or make a purchase in a currency not on the card, the amount will be taken from other currencies and you’ll be paying unnecessary currency conversion fees. So, plan ahead and track of spending by checking your balance online.

ATM and Currency Conversion Fees An analysis of ATM fees and charges and currency conversion fees from the above table shows that the big four banks charge between $2.95 and $4.55 in NZ dollars for ATM withdrawal fees. Currency conversion fees vary widely ranging from 3% up to 5.95%. This means that selecting the lowest rate ATM withdrawal fee may incur a higher currency conversion fee. Some banks will apply a reload fee of the value purchased so this has to be factored in if your are likely to need to re-load your travel card on your travels in New Zealand.

Using credit cards in New Zealand Visa and MasterCard are accepted widely around the world so you will have no difficulty using it in New Zealand for hotel accommodation, restaurants, shopping and taxi fares or other transport costs such as car rental or bus tickets. You do however, need to keep in mind that you’ll be charged a cash advance fee for using ATMs, and if you withdraw cash you’ll start accruing interest straight away

(usually at a much higher interest rate than for purchases). Another factor to consider with credit cards is that you cannot be certain as to the exchange rate that will be applied and that can be a problem if you are travelling to a budget. There may also be ATM fees – both from your bank and from the ATM operator – and foreign currency fees each time you withdraw.

Remember: A credit card is useful when travelling overseas, as it can be used in your mix of travel card, cash and credit card – especially when it comes to hotel accommodation which you might want to pay off over a few months after your travels in New Zealand. Also some credit cards have handy benefits like travel insurance so you could think about choosing a card that offers this. Credit cards however, can be expensive when it comes withdrawing cash at an ATM as you accrue interest straight away and probably also pay a cash advance fee. On purchases with your credit card, you won’t know what currency exchange rate you’re going to get, which can make budgeting harder and there may be ATM fees – both from your bank and from the ATM operator – and foreign currency fees each time you withdraw.

A comparison of travel friendly credit cards A number of providers do not charge a cross currency conversion fee where other cards in the market do. Travellers should note that of currency is not loaded on a travel car a crooks currency fee may be charged when making purchases over the counter. Overseas credit card use fees and charges Although these cards do not charge a currency conversion fee, (with the exception of the 28 Degrees MasterCard) they do charge ATM

For all ENQUIRIES email enquiries@seanstravel.com.au TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 |2016 | 17

withdrawal fees, cash advance fees and international ATM fees. The 28 Degrees MasterCard does not charge some of the above fees. The foreign exchange rate is calculated by MasterCard International on a daily basis according to daily foreign exchange fluctuations. The conversion will consist of two calculations if the transaction is made in foreign currency – it will first be converted to New Zealand dollars and then converted to Australian dollars for listing on your transactions. Credit cards used on your travels to New Zealand do offer up to 55 days interest free before purchase rate of interest is charged on transaction when making purchases over the counter.

Using a debit card in New Zealand There are obvious advantages in using a debit card in New Zealand. You should be able to use your existing ATM card in most places while in New Zealand. The advantage of this is that you’re using your own money – however, you won’t know what exchange rate you’re going to get which might make it harder to budget. So if you miscalculate and run out, you may need a back up to access some money if you need it. You can use any Visa Debit Card or MasterCard debit card in New Zealand, but there is only one account currently in the market that does not charge a currency conversion fee when you spend in a currency other than Australian dollars. Do note however that withdrawing cash from a foreign ATM can cost you in fees if the ATM machine is not within your bank’s alliance.

Debit cards will not incur an interest charge Using your debit card and therefore your own money is an advantage as the debit card gives you the same access overseas as a credit card, but it uses your own money from your transaction account. You will however still be charged currency conversion fees on purchases and overseas ATM fees.

18 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

Using a travellers’ cheque in New Zealand Travellers’ cheques may not be as popular today as they used to be but they still offer some important advantages. When travelling to New Zealand, travellers’ cheques have the added security of needing ID to be cashed. Plus, if they get lost or stolen, they can be replaced in a few days. The other disadvantage is that you don’t know what currency exchange rate you’re going to get, which can impact your budget. There will also be a fee for purchasing and cashing travellers’ cheques, so check these out too.

Looking for a local ATM in a foreign country Australians using ATMs even in their home country will be very familiar with fees charged at ATMs when their bank ATM is not conveniently located. The same applies to travelling in New Zealand where ATM fees charged when using an ATM of a bank that is not in your bank’s alliance can be even more expensive than fees incurred in Australia. It is worthwhile therefore for you to look for a local branded ATM while abroad. If you are travelling to New Zealand from Australia you can readily find a bank ATM where you can withdraw for free, but you will need to go online and check branch locations or alliance bank locations. Both Westpac and ANZ have strong ATM alliances in NZ, and Commonwealth Bank have a partnership with ASB in New Zealand.

Visa and MasterCard acceptance in New Zealand Australians travelling to New Zealand will have no difficulty finding ATMs with Australian brands on them. ATMs are available in most towns with the major banks represented: ANZ, ASB, Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) and Westpac. Some ANZ branches are branded as The National Bank - National was absorbed into ANZ in 2012.

One feature in New Zealand is that it has a very high penetration of electronic transactions - 75 percent of all retail transactions in New Zealand are settled by debit card at point of sale and virtually all brick-and-mortar stores have EFTPOS facilities. The majority of them will also accept major credit cards (namely Visa and Mastercard). In this regard Australian travellers to New Zealand should be aware that Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted in New Zealand and an Australian travelling to NZ should not have any trouble using any of their cards.

Selecting the best mix for your travel needs Whether you’re off for a long or short holiday, it’s good to have a couple of ways to access your money. Select a mix that suits your needs – for example a traveler card for daily spending with a credit card for gifts or emergencies. It’s always a good idea, too, to take few days of cash in New Zealand dollars irrespective of the mix you select. It really depends on the type of trip you’re taking and the type of traveler you are. Travel Cards have the advantage of locking in the exchange rate for the funds that you ‘load’ on to the card before you go, so there’ll be no unexpected currency variations for each transaction as long as you have the currency you are using loaded on the cards. But some credit cards such as the ones listed above also offer no international transaction fees on purchases and no currency conversion fees. There are few restrictions on how much cash you can take into New Zealand but when planning your travels you should consider taking a mix of cards and cash in order to save money in fees and currency transactions as well as having sufficient cash to meet your needs. A mix of travel card, debit card, New Zealand dollars and a credit card can be a cost effective solution. But do research thoroughly.

THE ULTIMATE RESTAURANT CONNOISSEURS BUCKET LIST

26 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

Some restaurants are worth building an entire holiday around…here are just a few Sukiyabashi Jiro, Tokyo

trip. You will be sitting almost on top of the people beside you, and the tiny space is so small that the chef’s enthusiastic commands and claps can be heard throughout the meal.

White Rabbit, Moscow

Many have dubbed it the best sushi restaurant in the world, and it’s almost impossible to get a reservation unless you know someone who knows someone. Sushi master Jiro Ono even has a documentary dedicated to him. The 20 course meal is regarded as the freshest, and the restaurant currently holds three Michelin stars.

L’ami Jean, Paris

With its dome glass ceiling and striking views of Moscow, White Rabbit serves an incredibly imaginative menu. The Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant is more chic than cartoonish, and features a menu focusing on fresh Russian produce (fresh baked breads, beans, barrel cucumbers) combined with new luxury ingredients like foie gras, truffles and of course, caviar.

Mugaritz, San Sebastian In a country that many consider the culinary capital of the world, it’s hard to narrow it down to one bucket listworthy restaurant. But amid all the Michelin stars sits L’ami Jean, a bistro style hole in the wall with Basque influences. The food is an impeccable mix of traditional French flavours infused with modern flair, but it’s the brash Parisian atmosphere that really sets the mood and makes it worth the

and food is individually prepared based on guest’s diets and desires) with edible centerpieces, cutlery and more. Aduriz studied under the famous El Bulli empire - and the food, which rivals high art, definitely reflects that.

O Ya, Boston and New York

This restaurant will seriously redefine the way you think of sushi. O Ya offers 18 or 24-course omakase menus (with a newly introduced a la carte menu) composed of surprising, modern ingredients. New York has many incredible sushi restaurants, but O Ya completely redefines the category with options like hamachi with banana pepper mousse or housemade fingerling potato chip with burgundy truffle, all elegantly plated. Simply put: it feels very new in comparison to other sushi mainstays. The restaurant also has some of the best sake—and service is impeccable from start to finish. Guests leave with jellied pieces of candy shaped like a fish, wrapped in an adorable metal sardine tin.

The highly inventive restaurant is at the forefront of the ingenious culinary revolution happening in Spain. Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz delivers a feast of 24 courses (no specific menu is set,

Le Bernardin 28 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

Al Mahara Restaurant at the Burj Al Arab by Jumeirah Resorts, Dubai

Dubai is a land of excess, so when in Dubai, go to an underwater restaurant. The floor-to-ceiling aquarium-style dining room houses thousands of tropical fish. The menu offers standard seafood fare, but the atmosphere makes the venue extravagant, and well worth a visit.

Ekstedt, Stockholm

Sketch, London

San Cristobal Paladar, Havana

In the heart of London, Sketch is a work of art. The interior of the restaurant is so fabulous; it’s often Instagrammed as pure inspiration. The Gallery room is a pastel pink wonderland while another dining area resembles an enchanted forest designed by artists Carolyn Quartermaine and Didier Mahieu. However, the bathrooms might just be the quirkiest restaurant restrooms in the world. Stalls are designed like giant white eggs, under a colorfully illuminated ceiling.

Havana is already an of-the-moment bucket list destination, and one of the city’s most authentic dinners, replete with beautiful old school décor (pastel painted walls, black and white photographs, crystal chandeliers and rococo furniture) is definitely worth the visit. San Cristobal Paladar is the kind of restaurant that gives the feel of years’ worth of history—untouched by pop culture. The restaurant also offers complimentary cigars and rum to really make you feel at home.

Le Bernardin, New York

For the ultimate experience of old meets new when it comes to Scandinavian cuisine, Ekstedt has it all. The restaurant doesn’t use any electricity to cook the food—instead opting to go back to their roots with fire pits, wood burning ovens and hot coals. The modern counterparts are in the ingredients—Arctic char is served with seaweed and radish, and an extremely avant-garde juice pairing (think: algae juice with a salted rim and unfermented Sauvignon Blanc) also exists to go along with the restaurant’s four or six course menu.

Want us to make your reservations as part of your tour package? Give one of our Travel Experts a call today on 1300 391 590 or 9429 3294 (Melbourne) There’s a reason it’s been a New York classic for many years. It’s consistent— the food is delicious, classic and very beautifully plated. Chef Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin is luxurious and represents the quintessential high-end cuisine of New York City with dishes like hamachi, scallop, and seafood truffled pasta.

DISCOVERING

BHUTAN This month, our editor caught up with our senior corporate consultant, Andrea, to talk about her recent hiking tour of Bhutan. Was Bhutan always on your bucket list, or was it an impulse destination? Bhutan has been on the bucket list for a while, ever since I started sending people there on holiday. It’s not really a ‘jump on a plane and go’ type destination though, everything has to be pre-arranged. Thankfully, we can take care of pretty much all of that with the tour company. How much research went into your trip? What are the must-haves for people visiting Bhutan? If visiting Bhutan, you have to have a prearranged land tour itinerary with a licensed and approved inbound operator. Most tours to Bhutan are all inclusive, so things like entry visas, tarrifs and gratuities make up part of the tour price. 30 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

As for researching the destination itself, I enjoy the culture shock, so I tend not to look too much up online, but that is purely a personal decision. Whatever else you pack, make sure you take comfy walking shoes. Bhutan is a tiny country, so when visiting the towns, you tend to walk rather than drive around town. A good camera is also a must – there is so much you can’t capture on a phone, and you’re going to have photos that you want to print. What was the weather like during your journey? Would you recommend people go during that time or another time? We went in early September, just before the start of their peak season. Peak season starts around mid-September. The weather was mild, in the low 20s. We got away with jeans and a t-shirt most of the time. It was cloudy but not rainy, and it gets a bit cold overnight, especially when you’re at 4000m. How many people were on your tour?

Have you stayed in contact with anyone from the tour? There were only six on our tour, plus the guide and driver. I prefer solo travel, so being part of a small group tour was perfect. The most you’ll find in any one group is about 15, with the majority of numbers being much less than that. Randomly, I knew someone on the tour from a previous life, and all of us who were on tour have remained in touch on Facebook. Given its reputation as a trekking destination, how exerting was your tour on a scale of one to ten. The actual hike itself was, for me, probably a 7 out of 10. I think it was the combination of consistently going uphill and the altitude that made it that much harder. It was described by one of the other travellers as being similar to the Inca Trail. The rest of the tour is fine for anyone of moderate fitness. There are options to do tours without the

hiking element, or milder hikes that aren’t so strenuous. However, if you want to do things like the Tiger Temple, you need to be ready to walk uphill quite some distance and negotiate steps. How was the food and drink? The school of Buddhism followed in Bhutan traditionally prohibits the killing and consumption of meat and alcohol, so the majority of the dishes are vegetarian with only one or maybe two meat options. All meat gets imported from India. Even fishing in Bhutan is prohibited. The vegetables are all local, organic, seasonal and fresh and they don’t use pesticides or fertiliser. Oh, and they pretty much use chillies as vegetables. Well, the locals do – they ease off for the tourists. Chilli cheese is very popular. Much like Indian food, meals are served as separate, buffet style dishes. It is good, hearty fare, which you need after working up an appetite hiking. I think it’s the first time TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 |2016 | 31

I’ve exerted myself that much on holiday and still managed to put on weight. Being a vegetarian, having more choices for dishes was quite a novelty. They do have a locally produced rice spirit called Ara. I guess it is similar to sake. It is usually home or farm made and drunk mostly but the traders and yak herders. They are also starting to brew beers as well so the market is expanding thanks to the increase in tourism. What cultural observations should tourists be aware of when visiting Bhutan? The Bhutanese are a conservative people, so the biggest tip is to ensure that you dress appropriately when visiting religious sites. This means no shorts, singlets, thongs and the like. Men should wear jeans and a shirt, women should wear nothing overly tight or revealing of the shoulders or bosom. Your tour guide will let you know on the day, but

32 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

be aware that entry will be refused if you are inappropriately attired. What was the pinnacle highlight for you? As hard and painful as it was, I have to say the hike. The combined feeling of utter exhaustion and exhilaration when we reached the top was incredible. The views and the landscape are simply spectacular!

On the way down, on the way to the Tiger Temple, there is a point where the canopy opens up and it is just breathtaking. Will you be going back to Bhutan? I’d love to do more of the east of Bhutan, so going back is certainly on the cards for us. The airport in Paro is the only airport in Bhutan, so driving is the only way to get between towns. The drives are long and the roads are not the best. Most roads are not bitumen; they are just dirt tracks. Of course, it only serves to add to the charm of Bhutan.

Interested in exploring Bhutan yourself? Contact one of the Sean Simmons Travel Experts today to personalise your visit.

That said, there are plans for a couple of domestic airports, so hopefully by the time we are ready to go back, they are in operation. What do you have your sights on next? This year is shaping up to be a big year for little breaks. We have trips planned to Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and Phuket.

SEAN’s

TRAVEL TIPS

Passports are a travel necessity. And while Julie Bishop has confirmed that the government is exploring the idea of keeping biometric data ‘in the cloud’ to allow for travel without the need for a physical document, for the moment it is business as usual. Recently, Sean Simmons Travel staff engaged in a training webinar hosted by AFTA, with guest speakers from the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade. Part of the webinar involved some surprising facts on lost and stolen passports as well as a reminder of how important it is to keep your passport compliant.

36 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

This month we want to share the top four things you need to check to make sure your passport is fit for travel, everything time you travel.

THE PASSPORT PHOTO Whenever you apply for or renew your passport, you will need to provide photos. Many of us think of our passport photo as an unattractive Facebook profile picture that we can’t change for ten years. While most of us will get our photos done, many opt to take their own.

However, if you do take your own, just remember a few simple things.

• Your glasses can’t obscure your eyes or show a reflection

• You can’t smile • You can’t have a backdrop for your photo – look for your nearest white wall • You can’t digitally alter your photo, for reasons that should be obvious • You can’t strike a pose, so no portrait-style or over the shoulder looks • You can’t hide behind your bangs • The flash can’t reflect off your bald spot • You can’t wear a hat to cover said bald spot

With biometric technology and smart gates playing an increasing role in border security, ensuring you have a compliant passport photo is more important than ever. To the right are a few examples of compliant and non-compliant passport photos are a few examples of compliant and noncompliant passport photos. Before you submit your passport photos, make sure you CLICK HERE for the general photograph guidelines as set out

by the Passport Office. If your photos are noncompliant it could delay your application or it could affect your ability to pass smoothly through airport security, so we strongly recommend going to a see a professional.

And don’t worry – we all think we look like this:

THE EXPIRY DATE Just like you subconsciously check the date on the milk every time you make a cup of tea, so you should remember to check your passport every time you plan to travel

overseas. And if you’re lucky enough to travel as often as you use the milk, you definitely want us as your agent! First, you need to make sure your passport is current - because nothing will ruin a six-week overseas jaunt faster than being on the way to the airport when you discover you have an expired passport. Trust us, it happens more often that you think. Passport applications can take around three weeks, but a priority processing service can turn it around

in two business days (plus postage times) – for a fee, of course - but really, who wants the stress? So check your passport as early in your planning process as possible. The other equally important reason that you need to check your expiry every time you travel is that many overseas countries require you to have at least six months’ validity on your passport. China, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia and many South American countries have and enforce their six-month rules.

TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 |2016 | 37

Always be sure to check what the rules are per country - especially if you are doing a multidestination journey – because the requirement can vary from country to country. For some, it can be from the date of entry, for others it is based on the date of exit. For most, but not all, European countries the rule is three months – so it pays to do your homework. Entry can be refused if your passport has insufficient validity for that country and, unfortunately, this does not entitle you to an urgent passport issue on compassionate grounds.

THE CONDITION You can be proud of your weathered, dog-eared passport that has travelled everywhere and has been dropped, run over, crushed, sat on, washed and almost lost more times than you can count. However, one of the major issues faced by officials is passports that are seriously damaged to the point where chips are faulty,

38 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

entry and exit stamps can no long be read or the photo is faded to the point you can no longer tell it’s you. Mould is also another big passport killer. Keep your passport in a secure, moisture free environment – like a small safe – and you should be fine.

THE WORST CASE SCENARIO Last year, 5216 passports were lost or stolen overseas. Which, given the 1.8 million passports issued may seem like a drop in the ocean, but it does happen often enough that you should know the answer to the question – what should you do if it the unthinkable happens? You’ll first want to contact your nearest embassy or consular service and report your passport as either lost or stolen. Start by finding contact details via the Smartraveller website or app (see this month’s Planet of the Apps for more info on the app). Once reported, your passport is immediately

cancelled and can no longer be used. An emergency passport can be issued to enable you to continue travelling, but you will need to apply for a new passport and, we won’t lie, it is expensive. There is an additional lost or stolen passport fee in addition to the normal application fee. Under certain circumnstances, this fee may be refunded. Also check with your travel insurer to see if you are able to claim the costs of replacing your passport through your policy. To reduce holiday stress, just remember to keep your passport compliant, secure and check it every time you are planning travel. SUNSMART Cancer Council The battle between the beatific Australian beach lifestyle and the dangers of too much UV radiation has been a long one. Since the early 80s Sid Seagull has been ingraining the mantra ‘slip, slop, slap!’ into the Australian psyche. That mantra has now expanded to become ‘slip, slop, slap, seek and slide’ but the message is still the same – be careful in the sun. Now you can use your smartphone to be even more sun smart. SunSmart App Features • Sun protection times. Lets you know when you do and don’t need sun protection for any location in Australia. • 7 day weather forecast. • Alert function. Personalise the alert function to remind you of the daily sun protection times. • Vitamin D tracker.

The SunSmart app lets you know when you need sun protection across Australia and when its safe to get some sun for vitamin D, making it easier than ever to be smart about your sun exposure all year. With a few clicks, you can find a 7 day weather forecast, the UV level and sun protection times for your local area in Australia so you will always be prepared for the day ahead.

• Sunscreen calculator. Users can personalise with the outfit they’re wearing, as well as their weight and height. How does it work? • Download the app and select your location in Australia. • Set up a sun protection alert and receive daily reminders of the times of day sun protection is required. • Select to receive the alert at the time of your choice or at the exact time the UV is forecast to reach a level that can damage your skin and eyes. • Use the sunscreen calculator to find out how much sunscreen you need to apply, taking account of your size and clothing. While everyone can benefit from this app, it is perfect for those who are fairer skinned, burn easily and generally need to be more sun aware. Because UV levels vary around the country, it is also a great app for those who travel domestically a lot. It is also a must have for international visitors who might be unfamiliar with how aggressive the Australian summer sun can be. So, stay sun smart this summer with the SunSmart app. www.sunsmart.com.au Available on Android HERE Available on iTunes HERE

FLIGHT DECK

Travel information & Industry News LEARN ON THE FLY WITH VIRGIN AUSTRALIA’S WIRELESS INFLIGHT EDUTAINMENT SYSTEM Virgin Australia now offers learning on the fly. “On your next flight, why not pass the time as you learn a new skill whilst flying above the clouds?” Virgin Australia asks as it launches its latest inflight entertainment innovation: short hour-long modules on a variety of subjects delivered via its wireless streaming inflight entertainment system. “Are you interested in learning a new skill, but just don’t seem to find the time to get started? Why not use your next flight as a unique learning opportunity,” the airline suggests, noting that “This month [January 2016], we have teamed up with Open2Study, Open Universities Australia’s online platform, to deliver short courses catered for travellers who are seeking to get the most out of their time in the air. This Australian-first will provide inflight education courses on our wireless entertainment system.” “This ‘edutainment’ innovation,” Virgin Australia says on its blog, “allows guests to gain a fast-tracked understanding across various topics, with topics ranging from photography to financial planning. Each course offers 4 x 1 hour modules, providing conveniently timed content for a wide range of domestic and short haul international flights. With a new course added each month, we aim to deliver knowledgehungry flyers with a taste of new disciplines throughout the year.” It’s a smart move for the carrier, leveraging the Lufthansa BoardConnect-based wireless entertainment systems that the airline started trialling in 2012 and later rolled out across its mainline Boeing 737800 and Embraer E190 fleets. Documentaries have always been the quiet success story of the inflight entertainment world. Qantas is currently showing a thoroughly fascinating Japanese-language 40 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

travel foodie guide to the Japanese donburi rice bowl, for example, which is well worth a watch (not least because the hosts wear hilarious yet inexplicable berets). But as wireless entertainment systems become more mainstream over both iOS (iPhone plus iPad) and Android apps, this is a smart (if first-step) expansion into learning-based content. OpenStudy’s course list ranges from Basic Physics to Chinese Language and Culture, Midwifery, Mining Engineering, Online Advertising, Sociology, and World Music. Courses are delivered by instructors from a variety of institutions ranging from Swinburne, Curtin and RMIT Universities to TAFE SA, New Zealand’s Massey University, and even the South China University of Technology. Unlocking interactivity, though, is another matter entirely. One-way learning options like the Khan Academy, iTunes U, Lynda and other services have been around for the best part of a decade — Apple’s iTunes U[niversity] was announced in 2007, for example, and had secured more than a billion downloads from the best part of a thousand institutions by 2013. But the rise of interactive educational (and indeed edutainment) apps like the gamified language-learning Duolingo, which require an Internet connection, could provide an opportunity for airlines like Virgin Australia and Qantas to leverage their maturing wireless entertainment systems, even without air-to-ground connectivity. Further developments could also include on-board tie-ins with Virgin Australia. Home haberdashery or style tips from uniform designer Juli Grbac? Interior décor hints and tips with Hans Hulsbosch, the airline’s creative guru? Summer recipes from celebrity chef Luke Mangan’s team? Management and corporate turnaround tips from John Borghetti – or indeed sartorial suggestions from the ever-snappily dressed CEO?

SINGAPORE AIRLINES MAKES HISTORY WITH NEW CAPITAL EXPRESS Singapore Airlines today announced it would be the first international airline to operate regularly scheduled international flights from Australia’s capital, Canberra. The new ‘Capital Express’ route will provide the nation’s capital with two direct international destination options with flight SQ292/291 operating Canberra-Singapore and Canberra-Wellington. For the first time in the two countries’ histories, Australia and New Zealand’s capital cities will be serviced by non-stop flights four times a week beginning in September 2016 – subject to regulatory approval. “This new service linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington reflects the close ties between the three countries,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong. “We are excited about the prospects for our new

‘Capital Express’ route, which we are confident will appeal to leisure, government and corporate travellers. “We are especially pleased to be bringing more convenient travel options to customers with Canberra’s first regularly scheduled international flights and the first non-stop links between the capitals of Australia and New Zealand.” Since it was purchased in 1998 the Capital Airport Group has invested more than $2 billion in facilities at Canberra Airport, investments that will have helped it make history on 21 September when it welcomes the first Singapore Airlines flight. Canberra Airport Chairman, Mr Terry Snow AM, said the decision by Singapore Airlines to begin operations was justification of the longterm vision that Canberra Airport has had for many years. “From day one, my family set about creating a worldclass gateway for the

DRAGON AIR REBRANDED AS CATHAY DRAGON Cathay Pacific group announced on Thursday that it is rebranding its wholly-ownedsubsidiary, Dragonair, into Cathay Dragon, in an effort to tighten brand awareness of its twoairlines’ among consumers. Dragonair was acquired by Cathay Pacific Airways in 2006, and both carriers are wholly owned by Cathay Pacific group. “In the decision it is hoped to combine Cathay Pacific brand’s international recognition andCathay Dragon’s unique

national capital. As longterm locals committed to the prosperity of the capital region, our campaign to see Canberra become linked directly to the rest of the world has been constant,” said Mr Snow. Tickets for the new Capital Express service will be on sale from Monday 25 January with Economy Class fares starting from $650 all-inclusive for CBRSIN return and $469 allinclusive for CBR-WLG return. Business Class fares start from $3,166 allinclusive for CBR-SIN return and copy,450 all-inclusive for CBR-WLG return. Singapore Airlines’ Alliance partner Virgin Australia will codeshare on flights between Canberra and Singapore, providing Virgin Australia customers with greater access to Singapore, Asia and Europe. The new Canberra service will add to Singapore Airlines’ already extensive Australian network. The Airline’s Australian network currently includes flights

between Singapore and Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Subsidiary SilkAir also serves Cairns and Darwin, while a wide-ranging partnership with Virgin Australia extends Singapore Airlines’ Australian and South Pacific network to another 53 codeshare destinations. Singapore Airlines’ new Wellington services will complement existing services between Singapore and both Auckland and Christchurch, and come in a year in which it celebrates its 40th and 30th anniversaries serving the cities, respectively. Singapore Airlines also has an extensive partnership with Air New Zealand. The Capital Express service will be operated with 266seat retrofitted Boeing 777200 fitted with 38 Business Class seats and 228 Economy Class seats.

connection to travelers from the Chinese mainland,” said SuzanneWong, manager of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd in Eastern China. It is also a response to the rising demand for transfers between the group’s two airline brands, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon, Wong added. Among the 34 million passengers who traveled on the two carriers in 2015, more than 7million made transfers between the airlines, five times as many from a decade ago. UNITED ADDS NONSTOP FLIGHTS FROM THE US TO SINGAPORE United Airlines will use its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to add nonstop service from San Francisco to Singapore. United says the new route become the world’s longest Dreamliner flight and the longest regularly scheduled flight operated by any U.S. carrier. United also will become the only airline to fly nonstop from the United States to Singapore. Flights on the new route will begin June 1. United’s 787-9 Dreamliners seat 252 passengers, including 48 in BusinessFirst and 204 in coach. Of those coach seats, 88 are Economy Plus seats that offer a few extra inches of legroom. “We are very excited about introducing nonstop flights between San Francisco and Singapore,” Marcel Fuchs, United’s VP of Atlantic and Pacific sales, says in a

statement. “This long-awaited service has been made possible by the newest version of our customer-pleasing Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and will offer unique benefits to customers traveling between our West Coast hub at San Francisco and Singapore,” Fuchs adds. “Customers arriving to San Francisco will have dozens of options to connect to other cities across the Americas.” At 8,446 miles, United’s San Francisco-Singapore route will bump out Delta’s 8,439-mile route between Atlanta and Johannesburg as the longest route to be flown by a U.S. carrier, according to data from OAG and the Great Circle Mapper website. The longest flight on any airline from a U.S. airport is on Australian carrier Qantas, which offers Airbus A380 service on the 8,578-mile route between Dallas/ Fort Worth and Sydney, Australia.

VODAFONE IS AXING ITS $5 DAILY ROMAING CHARGE FOR TRAVELLERS TO NZ Vodafone has made an important step in Australia’s slow but inexorable annexation of New Zealand. Until December, Vodafone Red plan customers will be able to use their mobiles across the ditch without being slugged the $5 daily international roaming charge that the telco applies when travelling further abroad. Over a million Aussies travel to New Zealand every year according to the ABS, making it a good testing ground for Vodafone to measure the impact on its coffers of offering free 42 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 12 | 2016

United says its new route will provide connecting one-stop service between Singapore and more than 40 U.S. cities. That includes “more than 26 cities that do not have one-stop service from Singapore today,” the carrier says in its statement. Once the new route launches, United will discontinue its existing service between Tokyo Narita and Singapore. However, United says Singapore customers can still chose to connect via Tokyo on flights to the U.S. by flying on partner All Nippon Airways, which also flies nonstop between Tokyo and Singapore. As for the boost delivered by the new SFO-Singapore nonstop, United claims customers “will be able to save up to four hours’ journey time each way” with the new route “as compared with the current United one-stop service and competitors’ schedules.”

The route also will leave United as the only airline flying nonstop between the USA and Singapore -- at least for now. Singapore Airlines had flown nonstop to Singapore from several U.S. cities, but the carrier dropped those routes in 2013. Singapore Air still flies from four U.S. airports — New York JFK, Los Angeles, Houston and San Francisco — though the airline’s schedule in those cities includes flights that first stop in one of five other cities (Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo,Frankfurt or Moscow) on their way to Singapore. Singapore Airlines has said it intends to resume nonstop service between Singapore and the United States once it receives its new Airbus A350 aircraft, though that won’t happen until 2018, at the earliest.

roaming to travellers. Vodafone’s international roaming users have racked up over 46 terabytes of usage in other countries since the start of 2014, and the company says that at least locally, 70 per cent of its network traffic is used by online video — a service that most customers would cut out entirely when travelling. Now, anyone on an existing ‘roam like home’ Red or SIM Only plan from Vodafone — one with the option to opt in to $5 daily roaming when travelling — will be able to land in Christchurch or Auckland and switch on their phone without being slugged excessive charges or having an extra fee applied to their account.
