ITINERARY Day 1: Singapore (D) Check-in at the Raffles Hotel for the start of your journey, with a transfer to the Woodlands train station to board the Eastern & Oriental Express. Stewards in exquisite Thai uniforms await you at the station, their hands pressed together in a gracious wai gesture - a promise of the memorable journey to come. then make your way to the Bar car for cocktails before proceeding to the Restaurant car to savour the delightful meal presented by the team of chefs. After a brief late-night stop in Kuala Lumpur, the train travels through and onward to the northern state of Perak, one of 11 states and 2 federal territories in the Malay peninsula. Day 2: Kuala Kangsar > Padang Besar (B,L,D) After breakfast we arrive at Kuala Kangsar, the picturesque royal town of Perak and the official residence of the Sultan of Perak. Our excursion will first take us to the grand Ubudiah Mosque, reputed to be one of Malaysia’s most resplendent. Completed in 1917, the mosque was designed and built by Arthur Hubback, a British architect, who applied the same Indian Mughal design elements to Malaysia’s Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station. Close by is the captivating Royal Museum of Perak completed in 1931 as a temporary palace. Built without a blueprint and entirely without nails, its
ress walls are woven from spliced bamboo strips with diamond patterns in the weave. This architectural masterpiece now houses the Royal regalia. Enroute to the museum, you will see one of the oldest rubber trees in peninsular Malaysia. In 1882 Sir Hugh Low, then the British Resident of Perak, brought 7 rubber trees from South America and planted one in the gardens of Kuala Kangsar. From those experimental beginnings, rubber trees became a highly lucrative cash crop when the automobile industry boomed in the West. The tour concludes with a visit to the Sultan Shah Gallery. The gallery resides in a former palace called Istana Ulu or Istana Kota, completed in 1903. Restored in 2003 and named after Sultan Azlan Shah, it houses his personal belongings, documents, mementoes, family photographs, trophies and state regalia, and even court notes of his first case presiding as a magistrate in 1958. Back on board the Eastern & Oriental
Express for lunch, we pass rice fields with limestone outcrops on the horizon, as we continue towards the border town of Padang Besar, where Malaysia meets Thailand. Immigration and customs formalities are conducted here while passengers remain onboard the train. Crossing into Thailand, the time difference is one hour behind Malaysia. Spend a relaxing afternoon at leisure, in your cabin catching the scenery out the window or in the observation car watching the colours of the sky change with the setting of the sun. Dinner is served and afterwards enjoy a digestif in the Bar car.
and role. Visits to a war museum and war cemetery are also included for those who wish to do so. LONDON Travel Guide A holiday in London is enjoyable for anyone and everyone. Families will find plenty to intrigue and delight children; couples can wallow in romance and ‘olde worlde’ glamour; and culture vultures will be in heaven. 22 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 13 | 2016
England’s historic capital was the centre of the British Empire for generations, and is imbued with an incredible sense of history; visitors to London often feel that the city is familiar because of all the iconic landmarks and famous buildings! Modern London has moved with the times and in addition to its proud ancient heritage it is a truly cosmopolitan city which continues to host prestigious world events. Anyone wishing to understand and explore the origins of Western culture will revel in a holiday in London, where traditional attractions still amaze and astound, but they will also be entertained by all that is new and trendy in London, with the option to visit the restaurants of famous chefs, sample the fashionable and energetic nightlife, and enjoy worldclass shopping.
Best time to visit London London is notorious for its abundance of rain and fog, so an umbrella is a necessity for a trip to London at any time of year. The best time to holiday in London is during spring (April and May) when the parks erupt in a profusion of flowering bulbs, early autumn (September) when the trees turn into golden hues and skies are often blue, or summer (July and August) when the long evenings are a joy. Winters are gloomy, dark and cold but the cosy pubs and brilliant museums still beckon.
Did you know? • Once the largest and most influential city in the world, London is still the biggest city in Western Europe and one of the largest financial centres in the world. • London is the only city that has hosted the modern Olympic Games three times. • Aldgate Tube Station is built on a massive plague pit containing more than 1,000 buried bodies. TURBULENCE | ISSUE 13 |2016 | 23
What to see in London • Spend a few hours getting lost among the myriad treasures of the British Museum. • Visit Madame Tussauds to meet all your favourite celebrities. • Gawp at the magnificence of St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. • Get a sense of the city’s rich history and see the crown jewels in the Tower of London.
What to do in London • Take a tour of the state rooms and Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace. • Sample punk culture at the fun and feisty Camden Market. • Explore UNESCO-listed Greenwich, famous for its meridian and many museums. • Marvel at the breathtaking views from the London Eye.
Getting there Heathrow Airport, situated 15 miles (24km) west of London, is the busiest airport in the UK and one of the busiest in the world, and many travellers begin their London experience in this famous hub. International flights also commonly land at Gatwick Airport and London Stansted Airport.

TRAVEL TIPS
Corporate travel – some love it, some hate it. One of the reasons to love it is that you’re getting out of the office on the company dime. But it still helps if you treat it as if you’re spending your own money.
Impress your boss and your accounts department by keeping your corporate travel costs to a minimum with these simple tips.
Making Changes Policy changes for both Qantas and Virgin have effected when and what changes ground crew are able to make to your travel plans – and the fees attached to making those changes. During business hours, you will need to contact your travel agent to make all changes. If the ground crew have to make the change, a service fee is payable – even if you are on a flexible ticket. 34 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 13 | 2016
Need to make a change on a SAVER ticket on the day of departure? The fare rules don’t allow for this, so if you are not going to make your flight for whatever reason, that ticket becomes forfeit and a whole new ticket has to be purchased. If you know the day before that you need to change your flight – call us straight away, don’t put it off to the morning. That’s one of the main reasons we have (and personally man) a 24 hours after hours line. Avoid costly changes, simply call the office after and and select option two to go through to our on call travel expert.
Be sure before you check in. Just because you can check in up to 24 hours before your flight, doesn’t always mean you should. Ask yourself first – am I definitely getting on my scheduled flight? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and check in. If the answer is maybe, postpone checking in until the answer is a yes. This is especially important for return flights. When you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ‘FLEXI’ ticket and are checked in, we have to phone the Virgin contact centre to reverse
your check-in before we can make changes to your booking. The process can be time consuming and frustrating, especially if you are waiting at the airport to try and get an earlier flight home on a Friday afternoon. Not only that, but you risk forfeiting your ticket if we are unable to reverse your check in before the flight closes – which can get expensive if we have to book a whole new ticket! If your schedule is unpredictable and you often have to make last second changes to your travel plans, avoid checking in until you know
for sure that you’re getting on that plane.
Be cool. Refuel. Remember having to rewind your VHS tapes before taking them back to the video store? It’s very much like that, except video stores didn’t charge you for having to rewind your tapes. One of the biggest and most unnecessary expenses in corporate travel is the refuelling surcharge. If you don’t top up your tank when you return your hire car, the rental company will charge you to fill it themselves.
Here’s the catch – refuelling charges can be more than double the actual fuel cost. That’s because if you don’t return your car full, some poor schmuck at the depot has to do it for you. Unless you live in a world where paying $3 a litre for petrol is completely acceptable, remember to be cool and refuel. Not only is it a courtesy to do so, you can potentially help your company save thousands of dollars.
Read your Itinerary Your agent will send you a travel itinerary and booking confirmation every time you make a booking.
These documents contain important information such as flight time, fare classes, fare rules and your accommodation. Sometimes, your agent has to make minor adjustments to the travel requested in line with company policy. These will reflect in your final booking confirmation. Costly mistakes are made when people forget to check the documentation and rock up to the airport late or try checking in to the wrong hotel. Unfortunately, you can never assume you got what you requested.
is to always read your confirmation. These tips don’t just apply to corporate travellers, but are particularly helpful for those who travel a lot for work. For more information, check your corporate travel policy or call Sean Simmons Travel and speak to an expert.

CAMFIND Search the Physical World ™ Search-by-photo apps have been around for years, but it has taken a while for the technology to catch up with the potential. Take Google Googles for instance – it was launched in 2009 as an experiment and it is only just starting to come into its own. And now CamFind has, quite literally, entered the picture. CamFind has taken all the features of Google Goggles and expanded on them, in what I found to be a much more user friendly interface. Neat things you can do with CamFind: • Translate foreign language signs or menus • Read bar or QR codes • Photograph movie posters to find movie trailers, IMDB pages, local show times • Photograph landmarks to learn more • Photograph items to learn and shop Obviously being a search engine you are going to need an internet connection to use it, so be beware of expensive data charges if you are overseas. It tested great. I took a photo of my headset at work. It recognised the brand and showed me where I could purchase one or get one repaired. It is definitely a fun app and worth trying out. And it is definitely worth the price – free! www.camfindapp.com Available on Android HERE Available on iTunes HERE

FLIGHT DECK
Travel information & Industry News EMIRATES CLAIMS TITLE OF WORLD’S LONGEST PASSENGER FLIGHT WITH START OF DUBAI-AUCKLAND SERVICE Emirates has claimed the title of the world’s longest passenger flight from alliance partner Qantas after its nonstop DubaiAuckland service touched down in New Zealand on the morning of Wednesday 2 March 2016. Flight EK448, operated by Airbus A380 A6-EON, landed just before 10:00am local time – after a 14 hour and 40 minute journey – and was met with a water cannon salute on its way to the terminal. The use of the A380 is a one-off to celebrate the inaugural service, with Emirates to ordinarily deploy the Boeing 777200LR for the 7,668nm route. The reciprocal flight, EK449, is scheduled to depart Auckland at 21:30 local time. Emirates said prior to the start of the Dubai-Auckland route it has worked with air traffic controllers, including Airservices and Airways New Zealand, on flexible route options, meaning the actual flight path can change depending on conditions, in an effort to minimise flight times and reduce fuel consumption. The majority of the Dubai-Auckland flight will be in Australiancontrolled airspace, Emirates said, adding it had worked with Airservices on flexible route options on its Australian-bound flights for the past decade. “The organised track system – AUSOTS – is well-proven and extending that program so that it is specific to the AucklandDubai route will have significant benefits, without impacting the operations of other aircraft going to Australia,” Emirates vice president for flight operations support services and air traffic management Geoff Hounsell said in a statement on February 23. Airservices executive general manager for air traffic control Greg Hood said the use of Flex Tracks and user preferred route (UPR) zones helped Emirates find the most optimal routes. “Airservices Flex Track and UPRs will help Emirates realise significant savings in fuel, reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the flight time with seasonal and daily variations based on the positioning of jet stream winds,” he said. Airways New Zealand chief operating officer Pauline Lamb added: “Emirates will benefit from Airways’ capability to offer new fuel-efficient arrival routes into Auckland and a high degree of flexibility using very efficient ‘user-preferred routing’, including the ability to review and change flight paths during the flight.”

WHAT’S NEW IN FLYING? Qatar Qatar Airways plans to upgrade its new DohaSydney route to the Airbus A380 from June. The A380 will be used from Doha to Sydney on a seasonal basis, just four months after starting the airline’s newest Australian route.. The aircraft also flew over Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House en-route to Mascot. times weekly and offer a year round service. Seating options include International Business Class, with fully lie-flat beds, Premium Economy or Economy with touch screens TVs in every seat. Thai Airways Connections to Europe and Asia are about to get a whole lot quicker and more convenient as Thai Airways launches its new schedule, including an 11th weekly service between Bangkok and Sydney. Starting on the 27 March, Thai Airways will be able to boast the fastest flight time between Sydney and European destination including Paris, Brussels and Frankfurt. AIR INDIA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY WITH LANDMARK FLIGHT TO SAN FRANCISCO An all female team of four pilots and 10 cabin crew were on board the Boeing 777-LR that departed Delhi then covered some 12,300 kilometres non-stop in around 16 hours, returning on International Women’s Day on March 8. The entire flight operation – including check-in, ground handling and traffic control – was handled by women. “The flight is a symbol of women empowerment and it will encourage women to step out of their comfort zone and succeed in male-dominated arenas too,” pilot Ramya Kirti Gupta told broadcaster NDTV before take-off.
AIR NZ now flying Auckland TO OSAKA Air New Zealand is expanding its presence in Asia with a return to Osaka (Kansai). The seasonal three times weekly Auckland-Osaka (Kansai) flights are scheduled to begin in November with Boeing 767300ERs and run until March 2017. Currently, Air NZ flies 10 times a week between Auckland and Tokyo with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The Star Alliance member said demand for travel between Japan and New Zealand had grown significantly since it cut flights to Osaka in 2013, allowing for the resumption of nonstop services to Japan’s second largest city and the gateway to nearby tourist attractions such as Kyoto, Kobe and Nara. “Osaka will also increase the options for travellers connecting to other destinations within Japan and exploring more of the country,” Air NZ chief strategy, networks and alliances officer Stephen Jones said in a statement. “With this new seasonal offering, paired with our 10 times weekly service between Auckland and Tokyo on the 787-9 Dreamliner, we’re confident that we can meet the growing demand for travel to and from Japan.” Jones noted the number of visitors from Japan to NZ had grown 7.6 per cent to 87,328 in the 12 months to December 2015. Meanwhile, 29,400 New Zealanders travelled to Japan over the same period, an increase of 17 per cent. The three flights a week will run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with a morning departure from Auckland and early evening arrival at Osaka (Kansai) about 11 hours later. After a short time on the ground, the Air NZ 767 returns to Auckland as an overnight service. Osaka is the second new seasonal route Air NZ has announced in recent times, with the airline also offering flights to Ho Chi Minh City, also using the 767-300ER, three times weekly between June and October. Further, Air NZ’s alliance with Singapore Airlines offers connections beyond Singapore to Asia and Europe. Air NZ’s 767s feature 24 cradle-style seats in business class in a 2-2-2 configuration and 206 seats in economy in a 2-3-2 layout. There is no premium economy cabin. The five 767s were due to exit the fleet by the end of calendar 2017, the company said in a slide presentation accompanying its 2015/16 first half financial results published on 25 February.

Mal’s St. Paddy’s Parade and Festival, Jackson Mississippi, Mississippi [19 March 2016] Back in the 1970s Malcolm White, an Irish Jackson resident and publican, decided the city could do with a St Patrick’s Day celebration. So was born a parade tradition that has grown in popularity, size and status to become one of the city’s most eagerly awaited annual events, drawing visitors from near and far. The parade winds its way down Capitol Street, focusing on the ‘Sweet Potato Queens’ and encouraging plenty of dancing in the streets. Most pubs and restaurants in the vicinity add to the festivities with special promotions.

Spring Equinox, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico [20 March 2016] Equinoccio de la Primavera, the Spring Equinox, draws thousands of people from around the world to witness the shadow that seems to crawl down the El Castillo pyramid in the Chichén Itzá temple complex. The shadow represents the snake god, Kukulkan, and takes the form of a giant, slithering snake that slowly descends the stairs of the largest Mayan pyramid in the country. Sunlit triangles appear to work their way down the stairs, finally illuminating the snakehead at the bottom and forming the giant sunlit serpent. The spring equinox is celebrated by many cultures in many countries, but the Mayan ritual is one of the oldest and most famous (particularly as the pyramid is associated with brutal human sacrifices). The archaeological site of Teotihuacan, near Mexico City, is also a favourite spot to celebrate
March-April 2016 the arrival of spring and thousands of travellers visit the site for the equinox, traditionally dressed all in white. The Mayans were famous for their advanced use of calendars, making this celebration an apt memorial for them. This slight inconvenience is more than compensated for by the festive atmosphere in the streets and the spectacle of so many people enjoying the race.
Moriones Festival, Cebu, Philippines [21 March to 27 March 2016] The Moriones Festival is one of the biggest and most colourful in the Philippines, having run annually since 1807. Beginning on Holy Monday and running through Easter Sunday each year, residents of Marinduque Island dress in costumes and masks to recreate the story of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. According to legend it was he who pierced Christ’s side, and the spurt of blood healed him. The festival is a solemn and sacred religious occasion, but it is also a celebration and there’s lots of fun to be had.

Holi is a special time to be in Nepal and foreigners will usually be enthusiastically welcomed into the festivities - in fact, it is really difficult to stay dry and normal-coloured if you leave your hotel! Holi is the first major Hindu festival of the year and is celebrated joyously. The exuberant spring festival starts on the night of full moon, when bonfires are lit on street corners to clear the air of evil spirits. Although Holi is celebrated all over India, it reaches a unique fever-pitch in Delhi and travelers are strongly advised to coincide their time in Delhi with this unforgettable spectacle. The race starts in Newlands and follows a vaguely circular route through False Bay (Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Chapman’s Peak) and Constantia Nek, and eventually finishes on the rugby fields at the lovely University of Cape Town campus. Apart from the ultra marathon there is a half marathon (13 miles/21km), a trail run through the forests above the University of Cape Town, several fun runs ideal for families, and an International Friendship Run designed to showcase Cape Town’s famous landmarks for international entrants. The fun runs include a Nappy Dash, for children under three, a Toddler’s Trot, for kids between four and six, and several other short races for people of any age.

Dubai World Cup, Dubai, United Arab Emirates [26 March 2016] The Dubai World Cup is the richest horse race in the world, offering a purse of US$10 million, with US$3.6 million going to the winner of the mileand-a-quarter race. The event attracts the best horses and jockeys from
An annual tradition since 1829, the rowing race between two of Britain’s oldest university sides creates a festival atmosphere along the banks of the Thames between Putney and Mortlake. Thousands of people gather at various vantage points along the riverbank, many of them conveniently close to pubs, to watch the famous four-and-a-quarter mile race that marks the beginning of the English social season. This famous sporting event is a huge thrill to witness and also a big party for spectators. Naturally the students of Oxford and Cambridge come out in force to support their teams and the rivalry is epic, though good-natured.

The parade aspires to showcase the fashion and creativity of the local GLBT community, with gents traditionally dressing in summer suits or tuxedos and ladies donning their best Easter suits or dresses complete with Easter hat. Nudity is not permitted, but apart from that anything goes with the costumes and conviviality.
Australian F1 Grand Prix, Melbourne, Victoria [17-20 March] Motorsport fans have a real treat when it comes time for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at the superb modern Albert Park Lake circuit. The main race is the first on the annual Formula One schedule, and forms the centrepiece of four days of events from karting through all racing categories and off-track entertainment. The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit is a street circuit around the ornamental Albert Park Lake just south of the Central Business District. The road surface is comparatively smooth for a street circuit, and the course is considered fast and fairly easy to drive, leading to competitive lap times, despite the fact that overtaking is difficult. The event is very well supported by Australians and attracts some international fans.

Unlike the other three ‘majors,’ the Open, The US Open and the PGA Championship, this tournament is held at the same venue each year, the Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters was begun in 1934 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, two amateur golfers who wanted to provide a service to the sport by creating the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. It was only in 1939 that the tournament became referred to as The Masters Tournament. Augusta National Golf Cub is equidistant from Atlanta and Savannah.

in the legendary South Stand party, where the music blares and the beer flows among the outrageously dressed fans intent on enjoying the rugby as well as having a good time. All the world’s best rugby nations compete in the event and the competition is furiously contested. The games are short (15 minutes long) and fast - quite different to regular rugby matches and the atmosphere for spectators is more light-hearted and festive than in big international matches. 40,000 spectators can pack into the stadium but this is just the center of festivities and the event spurs a kind or carnival all over the city, with the party spilling into the streets and venues of Hong Kong. In 2013, due to its popularity, the event has been expanded to include a whopping 28 international teams which will be divided into two separate competitions: the main event in which 16 teams participate; and a pre-qualification tournament involving 12 teams.
Marathon des Sables, Marrakech, Morocco [8 - 18 April 2016] The week-long Sand Marathon (often known simply as the MdS) takes place in the grueling conditions of the Moroccan desert, with sandstorms and brain-frying heat as the major obstacles to achieving such an intense feat. The race is over 150 miles (241km) of craggy, sand-swept terrain and competitors from around the world partake in the charity-driven event that benefits the infrastructure of the region. It is a multi-stage adventure race through the formidable Sahara Desert, made more difficult by the fact that all competitors must carry whatever they need to survive, apart from water and a tent, which will be provided. Only the fittest and most prepared are advised to partake as this is an extreme race, certainly not your ordinary marathon. In fact, the Marathon des Sables has been ranked by the Discovery Channel as the toughest footrace on earth, and is said to be the equivalent of five and a half marathons. Completing the race is a huge achievement and 44 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 13 | 2016
the desert landscapes are said to richly reward the effort. It is possible to enter as an individual or as a team. It is not the easiest race to watch, for obvious reasons, but spectators and supporters do gather at certain landmarks.

In Bangkok the best places to experience the festivities are on the square in front of the Grand Palace where the Phra Buddha Sihing is bathed; the Wisutkasat, where a Miss Songkran Beauty pageant is held; and Khao San Road in Banglampoo where jovial water-throwing reaches new heights in battles between locals and tourists.

The local Khmer people make offerings and exchange gifts. Traditionally, houses are cleaned and decorated with flowers, streamers and balloons and an altar is set up to welcome the spirit of new year. People wear new clothes for the celebrations and children give gifts of money, fruit, or other foods to their elders as a sign of respect. Many children also wash the feet of their parents or other elders to show their devotion and respect.
