weLCOME TO THE January ISSUE
FROM THE EDITOR
‘Gelukkig Nieuwjaar’, ‘Nouvel an m’, ‘Bonne Annee’, ‘Voorspoedige nuwe jaar’, ‘Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab’, ‘Gott Nytt År’, Happy New Year! Welcome to the first edition of Turbulence for 2015. I hope that you enjoy the content, and are inspired to try new, exciting experiences. This month, our destination focus is on Cruising, a rapidly growing market globally, with options as varied as cruising European River systems as featured in this issue, to trips along the River Kwai and deep into the Amazon jungle. Our Travel Experts can help you with any enquiries, with some very special deals available, some of which we have included in a few pages time. Whilst the start of every New Year is a symbol of hope and the promise of a better future, I’d like to just take a moment to remember the victims of the Charlie Hebdo murders in Paris, a city I hold very close to my heart. This tragedy struck at the heart of the nation, and reverberated around the globe as we all took a deep breath. At the same time, reports surfaced of the worst massacre in history. Baga and Doro Gowon, 2 towns in remote Nigeria, were attacked by militia from Boko Haram, leaving more than 2000 dead. I read these reports with horror. There is a battle raging for control in Nigeria, but the President is on an election campaign, so denies there is a problem, and doesn’t ask the global community for help. And the global community sits back and does nothing. It appears that Africa has nothing worth saving. Because NOTHING has been done so far. No USA preaching and mobilising, the UK obviously took all it wanted during the “Empire’ and similarly does nothing. Watch this space as to who moves first. My money is in France to throw down the challenge, and I hope I am right. Then maybe the world will truly become a safer place. From the team at Turbulence, and at Sean Simmons Travel, happy reading, and a Happy New Year

THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON’T TAKE OUT TRAVEL INSURANCE (AND WHY THEY’RE WRONG)
18 | TURBULENCE JANUARY 2015
From trying to save a buck to being totally confident in their invincibility, we’ve heard every reason why people refuse travel insurance. Travel insurance is completely optional – we’re certainly not going to force it upon you. However, as your travel agent we will always strongly recommend it. The fact remains though, that without travel insurance you may face exorbitant hospital bills along with the costs associated with making changes to your itinerary. So, what’s your excuse?
It’s expensive. So is replacing your suitcase and its entire contents when it goes missing at the airport. Travel insurance can cover theft, loss and damage of your luggage with additional coverage for the more expensive items like camera equipment, laptops, smartphones and tablets.
I have free travel insurance with my credit card. Perhaps, but what does that ‘free’ insurance actually get you? Not all insurances are created equal. Before you rely on your credit card insurance, check the PDS from the insurer to make sure you will be fully covered while you are away.
I rarely get sick and I’ll be taking every precaution. In some countries, it is possible to become ill simply by brushing your teeth with the local water, even in hotels. Perhaps you do have a strong immune system and don’t catch the flu every time it goes around the office, but without travel insurance, you cannot say you are taking every precaution.
I’m physically fit and not accident prone. Nobody plans to break their leg, get hit by a car or knocked off a motorbike while on holiday. You might not be accident prone – but the truth is, other people are and it could be you who becomes the unfortunate collateral damage. If
you intend to get even remotely adventurous on your holiday, and by that we mean crossing the road outside your hotel, take out travel insurance - because accidents do happen.
Nothing has happened to me before. Until one time, it does happen.
REAL STORIES Melinda saved $1500 “When Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010, European airspace was closed and my husband and I were stuck in London for seven days. We needed accommodation, transport, food, internet access – pretty much everything. Our travel insurance paid for the first night of accommodation because we had family we could stay with after that. They paid for our tube tickets, food and drink for the extra time we were there. They even paid for part of our mobile bill for all the data usage and phone calls we had made to the airlines and insurance company while we were trying to work out what we were going to do. The only thing they didn’t cover were the theatre tickets we bought since we had the extra time to kill. In total we claimed around 800GPD (1500AUD). It would have been much higher if we hadn’t had family to fall back on as the hotels were charging a premium rate for last minute bookings. The thing that I really appreciated (which doesn’t have a monetary value) was having someone to talk
to who knew what was going on. The travel insurance company had the latest information updates and were ready with different options for things we could do to try and get home earlier. They also helped liaise with the airline to get us re-booked. They also called us after the airspace had reopened to make sure we had everything sorted. Simon saved $2000 “Three days in to our three week holiday, my partner and I went out for dinner in Bangkok. By the time I got back to the hotel I was feeling crook and not long after that I was in the most pain I think I’ve ever been in my life and scaring the devil out of my partner. I was vomiting almost non-stop and I my stomach felt like it was being twisted. Hotel security turned up because I was screaming so loud a neighbouring room had complained. The hotel called a doctor in and I was soon transferred to hospital by ambulance. A night’s stay in a private hospital plus the hotel call out fees, medications and tests set us back a pretty penny. All up it cost us almost $2K and the end diagnosis – food poisoning which I can only assume came from the prawns in my Pad Thai. All I can say is I have never been so sick in my entire life. Thankfully, we had insurance that covered everything or else we would have had to fly straight home once we’d left the hospital. After a couple of easy days spent by the pool, we continued our vacation uninterrupted and had a fantastic time.”

They support creativity, encouraging people to be happy doing what they love. They supply awesome ideas, inspiration and quality products, providing you the tools to spend hours of quality time with your family. It began in 1952 with one Polish immigrant, Michael A. Dortimer, going door to door selling European greeting cards he had bought to Australia and has flourished in to a place where products are dreamed, designed and brought to life. We definitely recommend checking out the funky, bespoke Collected & Co. range by Micador – it’s simply stunning. Eat, Drink and Be Rich
“The difference between people who eat (and drink) to live and people who live to eat (and drink) is more distinct than ever.”
Tom Neal Tacker Naked Hungry Traveller Executive Editor
Australia is well known internationally for its vibrant regional tourism, primarily driven by landscapes and wildlife. Ask a typical international traveller what they think of rural Australia and they’ll likely respond in one of two ways: wildlife: kangaroos, koalas and maybe platypus or landscape: Uluru, Great Barrier Reef and maybe Kakadu. The ATC (Australia Tourism Commission) has based its international marketing campaigns largely on those holy grails of Australian tourism for decades. Scenery dominates almost all television and print media coverage, which isn’t necessarily a bad approach. Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu are all unique and should be visited by tourists bent on signing off significant destinations on their personal bucket lists.
24 | TURBULENCE NOVEMBER JANUARY 2015 2014
But times are changing, largely due to an ever increasing sophistication of tastes and social media’s widening reach. At long last the ATC this year launched a new marketing campaign aimed squarely at Australia’s wining and dining tourism. Markets are increasingly dominated by food and wine tourists intent on exploring culture represented by what local people eat and drink. The difference between people who eat (and drink) to live and people who live to eat (and drink) is more distinct than ever. Let’s face facts, McDonalds and Coca-Cola will always appeal to lowest common denominator demographics where price is the primary decision maker. I’m talking about real statistics here and though there are
always exceptions to every rule, the difference in average tourism spend between a Macca’s eating Coke drinking regular customer and one who avoids Macca’s and Coke as authentic sustenance is noticeably distinct. Honestly speaking, I’ve never seen a MacDonald’s food wrapper or an empty plastic bottle of Coke left behind at a boutique wine cellar door as a bit of carelessly tossed rubbish. It’s as if a social divide exists between one customer base and another. A McMeal and Coke consumer tends not to care very much about saltbush fed lamb and Pinot Noir. My theory about food and wine oriented tourism in Australia is a simple one based on close observation over a number of years. In marketing terms, wine is
the essential top product guiding early adaptors to sales bonanzas. Wineries set the pace and other tourism businesses follow once a clear market led by visitors keen not only to buy fine wines but who prefer to dine equally well. They overnight in well appointed, preferably boutique, hotels.
wine and all the operators involved in purveying goods and services to those businesses. Well trained hospitality employees settle in these wine and food driven regional areas and very soon the roll on effect of infused fresh energy adds more pizzazz to the entire scene.
When an interesting, small-scale, family owned local wine industry is established, a few smart restaurateurs set up shop to take advantage of growing numbers of cellar door visitors and the significantly increased local customer base, a process that takes on average about ten years for full development.
Here’s a short list of established Australian wine and food driven tourist areas: in New South Wales it’s the Hunter Valley, Orange district, Mudgee district and around Canberra and Yass. In South Australia it’s the Barossa, Clare and Eden Valleys, the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. In Western Australia it’s the Margaret River region and the Great Southern region around Denmark and Frankland. In Tasmania it’s the Tamar Valley and Piper’s Brook region near Launceston and the Coal River Valley outside Hobart. Victoria’s list is the longest in Australia: Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, the Beechworth region, Macedon Ranges to Daylesford, the northern Otway slopes around Birregurra to Bannockburn near Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, the King and Ovens Valley, Rutherglen, Milawa to Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley into the Strathbogie Ranges, West Gippsland around Leongatha and East Gippsland around Bairnsdale. Queensland’s Granite Ranges is the state’s best wine region and is slowly developing a more tantalising dining
After another ten years or so, a few really outstanding boutique accommodation places open their doors to visitors looking for somewhere lovely to lay their heads and rest their stomachs after consuming bucket loads of great wine and food. Goodbye Country Comfort, Flag Inn and other bog standard motels and hello Hunter Valley’s Tower Lodge, Barossa Valley’s The Louise, Lower Alpine Valleys in Victoria the Lindenwarrah Lodge and Margaret River’s Cape Lodge citing for example, just four outstanding small boutique hotels whose businesses are almost totally reliant on wine tourism. Eventually, a thriving industry of concomitant businesses creates a selfsustaining local economy based on tourism, food,
scene as a couple top end boutique hotels join the fun. Tourism driven by wineries is worth over 1 billion dollars annually. Some state tourism authorities understand that fact and make use of it, most don’t. South Australia’s tourism marketing campaign is largely driven by a food and wine focus. Victoria markets its food/wine regions to a slightly lesser extent overall though it’s the regions themselves that drive the wine tourism marketing campaigns, not the state tourism authority as a whole. Tasmania’s wine tourism is still in its nascent stage but improving as it grows in scale and reach. New South Wales and Queensland both lag behind in wine driven tourism marketing, seeing it more as add-on specialist attractions rather than a driver in and of itself. Western Australia’s wine tourism marketing is almost entirely focused on the Margaret River region and suffers because of a lack of comprehensive coverage. People who love to eat and drink, discovering keys to local culture through interaction with people who care about what they eat and drink and the environment from which they source their livelihoods, spend more per capita than the average tourist does. Wine tourism is worth more than 1 billion dollars to Australia’s economy. That’s a lot of money spent for purely valued added products and services.

New Years’ Resolutions for Every Traveller 2015 is now in full swing, and we all have our New Year’s resolutions - save money, lose weight and eat better. Some of us have possibly already broken ours. But for the traveller in all of us, we have some different resolutions for you to keep this year. When dreaming of your next getaway and diving straight into a new destination, keep these tips in mind, and hopefully you’ll find an entirely new world you never knew existed. Put the phone down
Eat like a local
Switch off the wifi, ignore your emails, and actually experience your destination. Ask the locals how to get somewhere rather than use the map on your phone, sleep without setting an alarm, and resist the urge to ‘check in’ everywhere you go. Sure, use it for some happy snaps, but just remember that the photo will never compare to the real thing.
If there’s one thing we insist on, it’s not eating solely at the hotel. When visiting a foreign country, there is no better way to experience it than by sampling the local cuisine. Whether it’s a street stall frying up fish or an old lady selling exotic fruit from a basket, give it a go. Wherever you travel, extend your palate and be adventurous, and when in doubt, just go where the locals (not the tourists) are lined up.
Embrace ground travel more often In a world where it’s almost too easy to hop on a plane and fly to your next holiday destination, the slower, less modern modes of transport might seem obsolete. In Southeast Asia, the options for transport included public bus, overnight train, motorbike, floating basket and buffalo. When travelling by land (or sea), you see the place you’re visiting in every light, from country homes and hardships to gorgeous fields and ocean views.
26 | TURBULENCE JANUARY 2015
Don’t let discomfort stop you Half the world would be undiscovered if our great explorers had looked at the boat they had to travel on and thought, ‘no thanks’. The very idea of travel is to get out of your comfort zone, suffer those mammoth mosquitoes and relentless humidity, and work for the end goal, because it’s these things that make the final destination worth it. Ignore the trends of glamorous camping and luxury safaris, and get your hands dirty on your next adventure.
Be selfie-aware Yes, we understand that as much as it might be annoying, selfies are the newest kid on the travelling block – and they aren’t going anywhere! But when you’re gallivanting around the world, snapping pics of your face in front of some iconic monument, remember to be judicious. Have respect for the places you visit, and put the camera away when visiting places like cemeteries or memorials of horrific war crimes.
Learn the language You’ll be amazed at how much the locals appreciate it when you feebly attempt a few words in their language. Whether it’s ordering a meal or asking for directions, the ability to know a few phrases and try your hand at some local chit chat definitely has its advantages. Talking to the locals is the best way to find out more about any destination, and starting with a simple ‘hello’ in the native vernacular is certainly a good start.
Never be satisfied At the end of the day, we can’t physically see every country and crevice in the world, but don’t let that stop you from dreaming. Crave a new adventure, search harder for hidden holiday spots, and demand more from the amazing world around us. In 2015, make it your “make it your mission to explore somewhere new, and then come back home, ready to go again, because travel is the one thing that never gets old.

Articles of interest Saudia set to separate genders on flights Saudi Arabia’s national carrier Saudia intends to ban gender-mixing aboard all its flights, according to reports from Emirates 247. Keeping in line with rules enforced by the conservative Gulf kingdom, the airline says its decision comes as a result of recurrent customer complaints. Passengers have objected to having males seated next to their wives and other female family members, Emirates 247 writes. “There are solutions to this problem…we will soon enforce rules that will satisfy all passengers,” Saudia assistant manager for marketing Abdul Rahman Al Fahd said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily ‘Ajel’. While there was no other information disclosed, the paper said it would include instructions to flight booking staff at the Gulf kingdom’s airports to ensure males and females remain separated aboard Saudia flights unless they are closely related. http://www.travelweekly.com.au/ news/saudia-separates-genderson-flights?mid=d43b25363d&utm_ source=Cirrus+Media+Newsletters&utm_ campaign=99311cfb59Travel+Weekly+Newsletter++20150105102831&utm_medium=email&utm_ term=0_fe913f1856-99311cfb59-60129261

Qantas tops world’s safest airline list Qantas has been named the world’s safest airline, on the back of a year in which fatal air accidents was higher than the 10-year average. The 94-year old airline topped an online report for the second consecutive year after scoring a “fatality free record in the jet era”. “Qantas has amassed an extraordinary record of firsts in safety and operations and is now accepted as the world’s most experienced airline,” the report stated. “Qantas was the lead airline with real time monitoring of its engines across its fleet using satellite communications, which has enabled the airline to detect problems before they become a major safety issue.” The other 9 airlines in the list included (in alphabetic order): Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines. Taking into factors such as government audits and airline fatality records, the report said its editorial team also examined “airline’s operational history, incident records and operational excellence to arrive at its top ten safest airlines”.
The top 10 safest low cost carriers (in alphabetical order) included: Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, Icelandair, Jetstar, Jetblue, Kulula.com, Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly and Westjet. At the bottom of the list of the 449 airlines surveyed, 149 were given top seven-star safety ranking, but almost 50 have just three stars or less. Five airlines only achieved one star for safety and included: Agni Air, Kam Air, Nepal Airlines, Scat and Tara Air. With regard to the number of deaths as a result of air accidents in 2014, this online report stated the numbers were “deceiving”. “No doubt 2014 was a bad year for airline safety with some of the most tragic and bizarre incidents in modern history but the numbers can be deceiving”. “Certainly 21 fatal accidents with 986 fatalities – higher than the 10-year average – is sickening. However, the world’s airlines carried a record 3.3 billion passengers on 27 million flights.” “Flashback 50 years and there were a staggering 87 crashes killing 1,597 when airlines carried only 141 million passengers – 5% of today’s number.” http://www.travelweekly.com.au/news/qantas-tops-world-s-safest-airline-list

Ebola ‘misinformation’ hits tourism
heavily on tourism is dramatic.
A British tourism expert says ignorance about the geography of Africa and panic caused by misinformation has led to tourism in Ebola-free countries being brought to its knees.
“Generally, people will rely on the support of their families but because so many people depend on tourism the intrinsic impact is difficult to measure.
Dr Marina Novelli, reader in the School of Sport and Service Management at the University of Brighton, took a group of students to the Gambia, West Africa, which is not affected by Ebola and does not border countries where thousands have died from the disease.
“Families are already suffering hardship and businesses are at risk, and this is a tragedy that is worsening and unfolding before our eyes.”
She said the outbreak has brought tourism in the country to its knees and is threatening hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs.
Ms Novelli said only Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia have been significantly affected by the current Ebola outbreak to date.
“I want to appeal to everyone to spread the word,” she said.
“Ask yourself, if the Ebola virus had spread to Italy would people be frightened to travel to the nearby UK? Probably not,” she said
“This country is open for business and is not affected by the Ebola outbreak - otherwise I would not have travelled there.”
“Africa is a huge continent and there is absolutely no reason not to travel to non-affected West African destinations.
Ms Novelli was in the country working on tourism and sport capacity building projects.
“Whether you are travellers, tourists, educators or experts in aspects of development, I urge everyone to keep informed and to continue travelling to countries like The Gambia.
“It broke our hearts seeing the industry on its knees; hotels closing and staff being laid off as a result of tourists’ cancellations and tour operators reducing scheduled flights,” she said.
“The Gambian tourism industry and the Gambian people need us all.” http://www.travelweekly.com.au/news/ebola-misinformation-hits-tourism
“This is all due to ignorance about the geography of Africa and panic caused by misinformation. “The Gambia is shielded within Senegal and both countries are Ebola-free. “Air links with countries affected by Ebola have been suspended as they have in many other parts of the world. “The UK government itself has declared the Gambia to be Ebola-free, but spreading this message is proving incredibly difficult, and businesses and people here are suffering as a result.” Ms Novelli said tourism was about 65 per cent down since last year and charter flight arrivals as of November this year, the start of the high season, were about half what they were last year. “Some hotels have closed and those which have remained open are doing their very best to keep staff on rota, but there is uncertainty about what is going to happen in the next few months,” she said. “Anecdotal evidence shows that every person employed in tourism usually supports between seven and 10 people, so the reality is that the impact on an economy which relies so
