Introducing Rwanda Rwanda is a small, verdant country in central Africa, the beautiful rolling landscape dotted with tea plantations, rugged mountains and towering volcanoes. Today Rwanda focuses mainly on ecotourism, being a nature lover’s paradise and home to the world’s largest population of mountain gorillas within the Volcanoes National Park. Gorilla tracking is the number one tourist attraction in the country, the critical nature of the plight of these endangered animals having been brought to international attention by the film Gorillas in the Mist, shot on location in the Virungas. Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to a large number of smaller primates, as well as more than 275 bird species, while Akagera National

Park is big game country where herds of elephants and buffalo, lions, hippos and plains animals inhabit the archetypal African savannah landscape set among a web of swamps and lakes. The waters of Lake Kivu are enclosed by green terraced hills that give way to beaches, inlets and the resort towns of Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu. Rwanda’s past does not paint as an attractive picture, however, the legacy of almost 60 years of sporadic fighting having taken its toll on most of the population. The horrific genocide of about 800,000 Rwandans in the space of just over three months shocked the international media in 1994, sparked by a long-standing ethnic tension between the minority Tutsis and the Hutus. Since then, Rwanda has had to work hard to raise awareness of itself as an unspoilt, scenically stunning destination that is

rich in culture and wildlife, boasting fine food and one of the friendliest welcomes in Africa, and is showing rapid signs of development and worldwide interest of a positive nature. The rapidly growing city of Kigali, situated at Rwanda’s geographical heart, is not only the capital but also the country’s most important business centre and the main point of entry.

Volcanoes National Park Often considered the best nature park in Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park (known locally as Parc National des Volcans) is located in northwestern Rwanda, not far from Kigali. A haven for the elusive and fascinating primates, the park encompasses the Virunga Mountains and is the best place in Rwanda to see mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and

other animals. Popular trips include climbing the Karisimbi and Bisoke volcanoes, touring the lakes and caves of the park, and visiting the tomb of famous gorilla researcher Dian Fossey. The market town of Musanze is located at the base of the Virungas, and makes a good base from with to explore the park.

Best Time To Travel July - September, December - January The driest months in Rwanda are between July and September and from December to January. The rains tend to fall between April and May and then again from October to November. However, trekking for gorillas involves entering the rainforests so you need to be prepared to get wet and muddy most of the year.

This four day safari travels to Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda to track the Mountain Gorillas, made famous by Dian Fossey. This short trip is designed for those with limited time and utilises comfortable four star accommodation. We have also included one gorilla permit per person in this package, but further permits can be purchased.

Brief Itinerary: Day 1: Depart Kigali You will be met on arrival at the airport and transferred to Kigali. Here you will be given a briefing on your safari. After lunch, you will depart for Parc National des Volcans. The journey heads north and goes through terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. Three nights at VIRUNGA LODGE. (L, D) Day 2: Parc National des Volcans Today you will head out gorilla trekking in Parc National des Volcans (subject to permit availability at the time of booking). Tracking the gorillas through the mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. Once the gorillas are found you will be able to spend up to an hour with them, and hopefully be back at the base in time for a late lunch. Some gorilla families

however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. (B, L, D) Day 3: Parc National des Volcans Today you will have the option to go gorilla trekking again (on payment of additional permit at time of booking). Otherwise, you may prefer to visit the golden monkeys, drive to Gisenyi, visit Ros Carr’s orphanage and Lake Kivu or climb the Visoke/Muhavura volcanoes. Other attractions include a trek to Dian Fossey’s grave. (B, L, D) Day 4: Return to Kigali Today you will leave for Kigali. Time permitting, you will take a tour of the city including a visit to a market, a pottery project, handicraft shops and the genocide memorial centre. Your safari finishes with a transfer to the airport. (B) NOTE: Based minimum 2 passengers travelling together. Tour departs most Saturdays.

PRICE INCLUDES: • Accommodation twin share • All transfers and park fees • Meals as specified (B, L, D) • Sightseeing and touring • One gorilla permit per person (value US$750pp) Tour is operated by African Travel Specialists and is subject to their terms and conditions. All pricing is per person based on twin share travelling in low season. Single supplements apply. Package is valid for sale between 01 Jun and 30 Sep 15, however, it may be withdrawn or extended at any time without notice. Travel is valid between 01 Jun 15 and 30 Nov 15 however seasonal surcharges may apply. All segments of the package are subject to availability. Subject to change without notice. Introducing BOTSWANA At the time that it gained Independence in 1966, Botswana was counted among the ten poorest nations on earth. A dramatic turnaround came a few years later when a treasure-trove of diamonds was discovered. Now the country is the third largest producer of diamonds in the world and Botswana is enjoying a growth rate and economic buoyancy unparalleled in Africa. The country is bordered by South Africa in the south and southeast; Zambia and Zimbabwe in the northeast; and Namibia in the north and west. It is the northwest corner of the country that is the most sought-after by wildlife enthusiasts because it is here that the Okavango River drains inland from Angola to form the Okavango Delta - the largest inland delta in the

10 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015

world - which provides sustenance to a rich profusion of wildlife. The delta is extremely beautiful, big sky country with spectacular scenery across grassy plains and limpid lagoons. The Moremi Wildlife Reserve, covering 700 square miles (1,812 sq km) in the northeast corner of the Okavango Delta, is the ultimate African safari destination. The Okavango Delta in northwest Botswana is unique. The annual flood of fresh water that gathers here from Angola’s western highlands slowly spreads for more than 5,800 square miles (15,000 sq km) over the Kalahari Desert forming a maze of lagoons and channels. The thousands of islands that arise sustain several diverse ecosystems, which are home to vast numbers of game and a myriad of birds, while the champagne-coloured waters support a varied array of aquatic life.

As the flood increases, so does the wildlife that congregates in huge numbers between May and October each year. The delta draws large numbers of animal populations that are rare, such as crocodile, red lechwe, sitatunga, wild dogs, buffalo and wattled crane. The familiar favourites are there in force too - various antelope, elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard and the like. Numerous game camps and lodges are located in the Delta catering to the range of visitors who come to enjoy the teeming flora and fauna and admire the lush green beauty of the waterways. The favoured way to travel through the Delta’s channels is on a makoro, a dugout canoe, poled by a local guide.

Introducing South Africa From a turbulent history, South Africa has emerged in the last decade as a leading nation in both Africa and the world. Since the end of Apartheid and the establishment of a democratic government in the 1990s, South Africa’s borders have opened to a flood of tourists who come to enjoy the country’s stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture. South Africa’s sense of history is strong, and visitors have the chance to explore important historical attractions ranging from the Zululand battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and Robben Island off the coast of Cape Town. South Africa is one of the most diverse countries in the world: the ‘Rainbow Nation’ has 11 official languages, and its

12 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015

colourful population forms a patchwork of African, Asian and European culture. Whether browsing the Indian markets in Durban, enjoying a shisa nyama (barbecue) in Soweto, or tasting local varieties at a winery in Stellenbosch, visitors will encounter a warm welcome. However, the true lure of South Africa lies in its untamed wilderness. Home to the ‘Big Five’ of African wildlife (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino), along with thousands of other species of plants and animals, big game safaris in nature reserves like Kruger Park and Hluhluwe National Park remain among the most popular activities in South Africa. The landscape encompasses a range of climates and terrains, including deserts, mountains, plateaus, grasslands, bush, wetlands and subtropical forests.

Best time to visit The weather in South Africa is volatile all year long, and the climate varies markedly between regions. The best time to visit South Africa is late spring (October and November) and early autumn (March and April) to avoid the intense heat of summer and the cold and wet winters in the Cape. Read more on South Africa’s Climate and Weather.

What to see Get up close with the Big Five and other wildlife in Kruger National Park. See Nelson Mandela’s former cell at Robben Island Prison. Ride the rollercoasters and try your luck at the casino in Gold Reef City. Take a township tour through Soweto and Alexandra. Have a drink in the sunshine on Durban’s Golden Mile.

Kruger National Park The Kruger National Park is South Africa’s oldest, largest and best-known wildlife conservation area, home to a huge variety of wildlife and most famous for its ‘Big Five’ viewing opportunities. Visitors have an excellent chance of seeing lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino among the enormous variety of wildlife, including over 140 species of mammals, 500 species of birds, and numerous reptiles and amphibians. The park had its beginnings in 1898, when President Paul Kruger established a protected area for wildlife after hunters came close to wiping out the rich game of the region. The AngloBoer War (1899-1902)

14 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015

stopped further progress until the development of the Sabie Game Reserve by the British, which later expanded into today’s Kruger Park. The park was opened to visitors in 1927, and at present stretches for 236 miles (350km) from the Crocodile River in the south up to the Limpopo River, and is about 40 miles (65km) wide; roughly the size of Israel. Situated on South Africa’s northeastern border, Kruger is a primary destination for international tourists, and is visited by more than half a million local and international tourists every year who are attracted by the different safari options as well as the park’s excellent range of visitor facilities and choice of accommodation, from luxurious game lodges to cottages and camping. The park is criss-crossed by over a thousand miles of roads and offers

excellent opportunities for self-drive safaris as well as guided drives. Bush walks with armed and experienced rangers offer a more thrilling safari option where animals like lion and elephant are tracked through the bush on foot. Visitors may only traverse the park between sunrise and sunset; when darkness descends it is best to be safe in a fenced rest camp. It is possible to take night drives with professional game rangers from the different camps though. The park has other restrictions that must be adhered to, such as a total ban on pets and firearms, and strict regulations on where visitors may get out of their cars. Visitors should also be aware that Kruger, unlike most of South Africa, is a malaria zone. This vast sanctuary is a must-see for every visitor to the country. The south is teeming with wildlife

and as a result is the most popular area, while the remote northern region is little visited by game or people, but provides some of the best birding opportunities in southern Africa as well as an abundance of historic ironage and Bushmen (San) sites. Rivers interrupt the extensive grassy plains towards the centre of the park, and the region provides an excellent setting for predators and birdlife. Kruger’s subtropical climate means hot, wet summers and warm, dry winters. Summer temperatures between October and March can climb to 104°F (40°C), while daytime winter temperatures from June to August are much more pleasant at around 79° F (26°C), but nights are cold. The best time for game viewing is winter, when wildlife is easier to spot.

William Light in the 1820s after the site of a battle fought in the Peninsula War between Englad’s allies and Napoleon in 1811 (Col Light participated in the battle). Someone misspelled the word and the valley ended up Barossa instead of the correct ‘Barosa’. • Some of the oldest vines in the world can be found in the Barossa. Some vines are around 130 years old • The main white wine variety is Semillion • The most valuable Australian wine to be sold at auction was a Barossa wine, the Penfold’s Grange 1951 vintage. It sold for over $50’000. • Prior to the 1970s most grapes grown in the Barossa were used for bulk ports called ‘stickies’. As these wines fell from favour many grapegrowers baked their surplus Shiraz grapes into muffins.

How to avoid

car hire troubles By Jemma Castle

It’s pretty much a given: at least one thing has to go wrong when you’re travelling. And there’s quite a good chance it’ll be car hire: one in 10 Aussie travellers have run into trouble when hiring a car, both here and overseas, according to latest CHOICE research.

associated with processing the transactions. However, as we’ve pointed out before, it’s not always the case.

CHOICE canvassed a nationally representative sample of 1100 Australian travellers to find out their biggest problems with car rentals. Young travellers (18-34 year-olds) were significantly more likely to have problems with car hire here in Australia than other age groups.

If you’re using a rental agency’s e-tag system you’ll be charged an additional admin fee. Some companies will allow you to use your own e-tag while others don’t. Both Hertz and Redspot have a system where you can pay a rate per rental day for unlimited tolls, but it’s pricey if you don’t use many tollways.

For those experiencing problems with car hire, these were the top three troubles: 1. Hidden fees (40%) 2. Preferences not delivered (30%) 3. Unclear terms and conditions (26%) If you’re hiring a car within Australia you have some protections under Australian Consumer Law, but internationally you’ll be subject to the consumer laws of the relevant country.

Hidden fees Hidden fees and charges seem to be the biggest problem when it comes to car hire, with nearly four in 10 people who hire a car experiencing the pain of unexpected costs.

If you’ve ever hired a car you’re probably familiar with the great rate creep, as unforeseen fees and charges suddenly appear on your bill. Here’s a bunch of potential extra charges that you should be aware of before you drive.

Administrative fee It’s common practice among car hire companies to charge an unavoidable administrative fee of around 3.5% on top of the total cost.

Vehicle registration recovery fee This fee is often tacked onto the quote and charged as a daily rate to recover the compulsory costs of registering the vehicle.

Credit card surcharges Depending on what credit card you pay with, surcharges tend to vary from 1.5% to 4.95%. Following on from the RBA’s ruling in 2013, credit card surcharges should be limited to the “reasonable cost of acceptance”

Admin fees on tolls

Excess reduction The base rate can be bumped up dramatically by paying to reduce your excess liability. As it’s optional, the fees don’t need to be disclosed up front, which makes comparing prices across providers tricky. However, there are other ways you can insure yourself against the excess. The base rate can be bumped up dramatically by paying to reduce your excess liability, but there are other ways to insure yourself against the excess

TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015 | 31

Cancellation charges

Additional driver fee

A cancellation fee will generally apply if you don’t cancel within a certain time period. Be careful as car rental companies can trick you into thinking there are no cancellation fees. For example, on Hertz’s website we found an advertisement which read: “No cancellation or amendment fees*…*when the booking is cancelled within seven days of being made.”

If you want more than one person to be authorised to drive the car, hire companies will often charge a fee per day for additional drivers.

One-way/ relocation fees

If you don’t return the car with a full tank, and haven’t chosen a pre-paid fuel option, you’ll be charged a premium fuel price for the convenience.

If you want to drop the vehicle in another location you’ll likely be charged a fee for the convenience. You may also be slugged an extra charge for returning accessories to different locations. For example, Budget charges a $250 fee for its GPS system if it’s dropped off at a location that it hasn’t pre-approved.

Premium location surcharge Certain locations (such as airports) will often have a premium location surcharge tacked on. For example Hertz charges a 28.5% fee if you’re renting from Sydney airport. And the extra catch is that because it’s a percentage, it’s not just applied to the base rate, it applies to everything, including all additions such as excess reduction costs and GPS hire costs.

32 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015

Excess kilometres There’s often a limit to how many kilometres you can drive. If you go over this limit, you’ll be charged extra by the kilometre.

Refuelling surcharge

Young driver surcharge Drivers under the age of 25 are often charged a surcharge. For example, Hertz and Redspot charge $16.50 per day while Thrifty charges $27.50 a day.

Early return fee If you return the car early, some companies charge fees to compensate for loss of rental income, but you should still receive back the charge for the unused days.

Fee for losing your GPS or accessories Many of the accessories you rent with the car, such as the GPS, will likely not be covered by insurance, and you may be up for a hefty fee if you lose them. For example, Budget charges $495 plus an admin fee and GST if you lose a GPS unit. Even the most expensive GPS unit in CHOICE’s latest test doesn’t cost that much.

Preferences not delivered If you book a car specifically because it’s advertised as having certain features, it’s pretty frustrating if the car hire agency turns around and says it’s not available. And it happens to three in 10 people that have problems when hiring a car. The good news, if you’re in Australia, is that if the car was advertised as having specific features when you booked, or if you were told it would have those features, then under Australian Consumer Law you’re entitled to a car that fulfils that need.

Late fees

Unclear terms and conditions

Some agencies have longer grace periods than others if you return the vehicle after the agreed time. After 30 minutes, Hertz charges for a half day and after 60 minutes that jumps to a full day. Thrifty gives a one hour grace period and only charges by the hour for the first three hours.

If you’ve ever been confused by some of the terms and conditions set out by car hire companies, you’re not alone. In fact, we got a bit of a headache when we took a look. And our research confirms this, with one in four Aussie travellers having trouble with unclear terms and conditions when hiring a car.

Reducing your car hire excess Possibly the area of most confusion is what you are and aren’t covered for if you have an accident. When renting a car in Australia however, there are essentially three elements you need to be aware of. Third-party: In each state and territory it’s compulsory to have third party insurance to register a car. This covers you for injuries you may cause to other people, but oddly enough, doesn’t necessarily cover you as the driver of the vehicle. So it’s worth asking what protection you have as the driver. Liability: The rental agency’s basic cover is generally automatically included, although it’s worth checking as Avis has a caveat saying the cover may not be available in all of its locations. The “basic” cover is often known as the loss damage waiver or collision damage waiver, but there’s a range of names which can make it confusing. The basic cover essentially reduces your potential liability to a certain amount if you damage the rental car or other third party property. However, you’ll still be liable for the excess, which varies across car rental agencies but is no doubt a hefty sum. The excess will often be even higher in the case of a single vehicle accident. Reduced excess: You then have the option

to reduce the excess, sometimes to as little as $0. But reducing the excess can be pricey and is usually charged on a daily basis, and still may not waive all of your liability. There are other ways to reduce the excess such as through RACV or Tripcover. Some travel insurance providers have cover to reduce the excess – in fact, the majority of the policies we reviewed cover your excess liability to some degree.

Some of the common exclusions which mean you may not be covered and could be liable for the full costs of repair include damage as a result of: • disobeying road rules or being in contravention of any law • driving outside any town or city limits in WA or NT between dusk and dawn • hail, flood, fire, storm or cyclone • driving on unsealed roads • having an unauthorised person drive the vehicle • using the incorrect fuel type

Excess exclusions

• the driver being affected by alcohol.

Even if you think you’ve reduced your excess to zero there are still situations when you might not be covered at all and you’ll be liable for the full cost of repairs. That’s because there’s always a handful of exclusions written into the contract. You’ll generally be fully liable for damages if you do something which breaches the contract, such as driving on unsealed roads, or allowing an unauthorised person to drive the car. You can even be held liable for the loss of income to the rental agency while the car is being repaired if you breach the rental agreement. In addition, your liability for single vehicle accidents can’t always be completely bought out, so it pays to check.

Damage to windscreens, glass, tyres, wheels, roof and underbody are usually excluded as well. Source: www.choice.com.au/travel/onholidays/car-hire/articles/car-hire-excessand-hidden-fees

So, while it’s dull, boring and confusing, it’s worth reading the terms and conditions.

SEAN’s

TRAVEL TIPS

Con artists come in many guises and their tricks are often clever and always evolving. We have some handy tips to avoid getting caught out. Wherever you go, there will be the usual pickpockets, bag snatchers and petty hustlers. It’s a sad fact that travellers are sometimes targeted by those of questionable character trying to make a quick profit. From the moment you touch down, vigilance is the key to ensuring you have a fantastic (and safe) time. This edition highlights some of the more ingenious scams and give you tips on how to avoid them.

“THE LINE CUTTER” UNITED STATES AND PARTS OF ASIA You might think that the airport, with security everywhere, would be relatively free of threats. Sadly, you can fall victim to a scam even before you’ve boarded the plane. Let’s say you’re going through security at the airport; you’ve put your belongings on the conveyor and are just about to walk through the detector when a person behind you cuts in front mumbling something about being late for their flight. Annoying, but it happens, so you let it pass. This person repeatedly sets off the alarm. He’s

‘forgotten’ to remove his watch and loose change and is holding up the entire line. Meanwhile, with all eyes on the person causing this distraction, an accomplice has discreetly lifted your belongings from the conveyor and made a clean escape. How to avoid: Hold on to your things and place them on the belt at the last minute before walking through the scanner, that way nobody can cut in front. If you do see something untoward, say something immediately to security.

“THE IMAGINARY RESTAURANT” UNITED STATES Sometimes on holiday you might just want to enjoy some good old-fashioned takeout. More hotels are recognising this trend and are even partnering with local vendors, placing menus for guest convenience in the in-room compendium. However, you might occasionally find a menu slipped under your hotel room door. Caveat emptor. You might find yourself craving the promised cuisine, so you call for delivery, place

your order and pay using your credit card. Then you wait, and wait, and wait. The truth is, the restaurant doesn’t exist, your order is never coming and you’ve fallen victim to a credit card scam. How to avoid: If you do find yourself craving say, a pizza, call or visit the front desk and ask for personal recommendations. Some quick Google research should confirm the legitimacy of any in-room menus. Always ask the restaurant about paying cash on delivery. Some of the more popular local or recommended restaurants may even have an arrangement with the hotel to charge your order back to your room.

“THE FRONT DESK” ASIA You’ve checked in and given your credit card to the front desk, so when you receive a call later from someone claiming to be from the front desk saying there is a problem with your card and asking you to kindly please confirm the number over the phone, you might be surprised (you just increased your limit because you were going away) but you’re

not alarmed (these things sometimes happen, right?). The fact is you should be alarmed. Hotels are not supposed to put people through to your room without getting the caller to confirm the guest name, but for whatever reason sometimes people do get put through. These people are not the front desk – they are con artists. How to avoid: Never give your credit card number over the phone at your hotel. If you do receive a call from ‘the front desk’, tell them that you will be down shortly to sort the matter out in person. If it really is the front desk, this will be a more than reasonable solution. If the person on the other end of the phone gets insistent, hang up and immediately let reception know.

“THE DROPPED RING” EUROPE, ESPECIALLY FRANCE It probably starts with a gentle tap on your shoulder. You turn around to see a seemingly sweet little old lady with what appears to be a gold ring in her hand. “Excuse me,” she says. “I think you dropped this.”

TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015 | 35

She will probably try and press the ring in to your hand. If you accept the ring, even just to take a closer look, the sweet little old lady will demand payment as a ‘reward’ for its return, and make it pretty clear you can’t move on until you pay up, at least not without embarrassing yourself in public. How to avoid: This is a no-brainer, simply deny ownership of the ring. If you’ve taken the ring for whatever reason, put the ring on the ground and walk away. By the way, if you somehow think that a few euros is a small price to pay for a gold ring the more fool you – the ring is brass and worth about 10 cents.

“THE BEAUTIFUL STRANGER” ASIA AND PARTS OF EUROPE A mysterious but very attractive woman strikes up a conversation with you and after a bit of banter, she asks if you would like to get a drink at a local place she knows. What’s the harm in a single man having a quiet drink with a beautiful woman, right? After all, you tell yourself, what happens on vacation… One drink turns in to a few more and after a couple of hours of incredibly enjoyable conversation you decide you really should find out where your friends are and get back to your hotel. At this point, the bar will present you with a whopping bill which includes your drinks, her drinks…and her time. That’s right, your ‘date’ 36 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 07 | 2015

is actually an escort who works for the bar. The security will be there to assist, by providing another type of escort service right to the nearest ATM. How to avoid: We’re not going to suggest being unfriendly – but be wary of going anywhere with strangers, especially in areas notorious for their adult trade. Test the waters by countering any suggestions with a venue more in your comfort zone. If alarm bells truly go off, make up a wife or girlfriend to get you out of there.

How to avoid: Wherever possible, only used licensed foreign exchange dealers. If in doubt, always double check it right in front of the vendor – you can apologise for your mistrust after you’re sure you got what you were supposed to.

“THE CLOSED HOTEL” INDIA AND PARTS OF EUROPE You’ve just come off a long flight. You’re hot, you’re tired and you just want to get to your hotel, unpack

“The greatest friend of the con artists is lack of knowledge.” Jane King “THE SLEIGHT OF EXCHANGE” EVERYWHERE Currency exchange can be a gamble from the get-go, with unexpected changes vastly affecting your holiday budget, but did you know you are also at risk of exchange scammers? It goes like this, you hand over your money and they count out the local currency in front of you and you agree the amount is correct. Between you making that agreement and them handing the cash to you, they’ve magically managed to skim some off the top. It’s not until later that you realise you’ve been had and by then it’s too late to do anything about it.

your bags and relax for a little while. You flag a taxi driver and when you tell him where you are staying he drops some terrible news. The hotel you have booked has closed down! Lucky for you, he knows another absolutely perfect hotel that he can take you to right away. You soon find out the new hotel is more expensive than your booked hotel, plus you lose the money for no-showing on your reservation. Lucky for your driver, he gets a nice little commision from the hotel for every guest he brings their way with this little rort. How to avoid: Firstly, always book your accommodation through

a reputable source (like us!). Once you reach your destination, if someone tries to pull this on you, insist on going to your booked hotel regardless and if necessary flag another taxi. The variation on this scam is telling tourists their booked hotel is being ‘renovated’. There are many more scams, some concentrated to certain areas and others more widespread. However, don’t let the potential for being ripped off kerb your enthusiasm or dull your sense of adventure. Be mindful that in someone else’s country YOU are the forgeiner, and to some people, that makes you ripe for the picking. Be alert and you’re sure to see them coming before they see you. Travel information & Industry News BALI’S ASH CLOUD CRISIS CAUSES TRAVEL INSURANCE CONFUSION Are you planning to travel to Bali over the next few days? If you bought travel insurance before July 2nd, consider yourself lucky. Most travel insurers will not accept claims related to the Bali ash cloud from customers who bought their policy after July 2nd, and in some cases, July 3rd (Eastern Standard Time). However, holiday makers who purchased travel insurance before the cutoff may be eligible to claim. It’s important to note that the type of cover you buy makes all the difference. Unlike basic policies, comprehensive policies do provide cancellation cover for unforeseen circumstances. Natalie Ball, Director, comparetravelinsurance. com.au says: “A basic travel insurance policy does not generally provide cover for travel delays or cancellation. They are often medical only policies and are priced accordingly. However, many standard or comprehensive policies do provide cancellation cover and additional travel expenses incurred as a result of natural disasters.” Stranded Passenger with Comprehensive Travel Insurance

If you purchased a comprehensive travel insurance policy and were affected by the Bali ash cloud you’re in luck. This is generally what travel insurance is for – an unforeseen event. Travellers will be covered for accommodation, travel and meal expenses provided they purchased their policy prior to the insurer’s published cut-off date. For travellers stuck in Bali beyond the expiration date of their travel insurance policy, the event automatically extends their policy until they’re able to get home. Having said that, it’s not an excuse for holidaymakers to splurge at the insurer’s expense. A two week stay at the swanky W Hotel or an upgraded return business class flight is not likely to be paid for. Insurers will cover claims for reasonable and consistent travel expenses. Travellers that haven’t left Holidaymakers whose travel plans have been affected by the Ash cloud have provision to cancel their trip and claim for out of pocket expenses provided they purchased their policy prior to the insurer’s cut-off date. What to expect from your insurer Depending upon your chosen insurer, most travellers can expect

all reasonable out-ofpocket expenses to be reimbursed. The major insurers have set-up dedicated teams to work on the event claim phone lines in order to separate these calls from the ‘business as usual’ calls so that customer calls are responded to as quickly as possible. To date thousands of Australians have been left stranded or unable to travel to Bali with flights to and from the island declared cancelled. Insurers are expecting up to 20,000 claims for additional accommodation and other expenses. Calls to insurance companies are expected to increase in volume by 100% or more. 1Cover.com.au have estimated that of the 16,000 Australians travelling to Bali each week, 30% do not have travel insurance. The thousands of tourists facing considerable inconveniences can be assured that the right travel insurance policy would

cover their costs. Natalie Ball adds: “When it comes to unforeseen events, a comprehensive policy should cover you, but only if you purchased your policy before the event occurred. That’s why we always advice travellers to buy travel insurance sooner rather than later.” Damage control in Bali Found yourself grounded in Bali? With Mount Ruang continuing to erupt, the backlog of delayed flights only continues to grow, leaving thousands of Australians stranded. With additional food and accommodation bills mounting, tourists are seeing their travel budgets rapidly diminishing. So how can travellers try to salvage their holiday savings? Natalie Ball says: “Our advice would be to keep any additional expenses to a minimum and hang on to your receipts. If you haven’t bought travel insurance we would strongly advise you to do so in the future. As we

always say, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.” What to know before making a claim… • Get in touch with your airline carrier | Before you cancel flights and/or book new tickets it is important you speak to your airline, and check with them what arrangements they can make. • Contact your insurer | Before you go ahead and pay for any extra accommodation or new flights check in with your insurer that they will cover these added costs. • Get it down on paper | If you’re the victim of flight cancellation or delay be sure to get any written proof of such events from your airline.

Putin Opens ‘Military Disneyland’ Russian President Vladimir Putin officially opened Patriot Park to the Russian public last month. This war-themed theme park was opened to great fanfare with appearances by a military choir and dancing robot Special Forces unit. He called the new attraction “an important element in our system of military-patriotic work with young people.” By the way, Putin also used the opportunity to casually announce that 40 new ballistic missiles would be added to Russia’s nuclear arsenal this year. The park, which officials describe as a ‘military Disneyland’ (but actually appears to be more like a mashup between an air show, a theme park and a war re-enactment) features such diversions as serving food made from army rations at its concessions stands, recreations of famous battles and letting kids play with grenade launchers. To be fair, what 10-year-old wouldn’t theoretically want to play with a grenade launcher?

The park comes amid a time of heightened patriotism and militarism following Russia’s annexation of Crimea last year and the ensuing confrontation with the West — the worst between the two since the Cold War. While the park is officially open, it is rumoured that it will not be complete until 2017. Whether the park will open to tourism is still to be seen. You can see more photos of this slightly wacky theme park cum military recruitment platform by clicking HERE. Photos by Evgeny Feldman from Mashable.

• Keep receipts | Your insurer will need some type of proof of payment in order to pay out your claim. Hold on to any boarding passes, receipts or credit card statements Whether you’re a vacation veteran or a first time flyer, a natural disaster can cause a flurry of frustration. Whilst you can’t always plan for the unexpected, a good understanding of your travel insurance policy can help to smooth over any holiday hurdles.
