EXCLUSIVE VAtican TOUR
PRIVATE EARLY-ENTRANCE GUIDED TOUR 8 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 06 | 2015
Did you know that in peak season the Vatican can have over 30,000 visitors through its doors every day? Fortunately, Sean Simmons Travel has access to the restricted early-bird tickets so you can tour the Vatican before the doors open to the general public. Indulge in a one-of-a-kind experience with an early entrance slot at 8.00am. Avoid the usual crowds inside the Museums, entering one hour before doors open to the public. In addition, you will have exclusive access to the “Cabinet of the Masks”, a room inside the Vatican normally closed to the public. The Cabinet of the Masks is filled with elaborate stucco decorations, breathtaking paintings and statues (to name one, the magnificent “Three Graces” are displayed there), which came from the Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli.
You’ll tour the seemingly endless collection of treasures as you make your way to the single work of art that dwarfs them all: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, the bestknown chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican City, famous for its architecture and decoration. This tour will end with the extraordinary St. Peter’s Basilica: designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. St Peter’s Basilica is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. TOUR WITH PRIVATE GUIDE* | 4 HOURS FROM ONLY $220PP

Melbourne Melbourne has now been named the world’s most liveable city four years in a row. It is a modern city that is constantly changing and leading the world in many ways. It is home to the world’s largest tram system outside Europe, and the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant is a dining experience not to be missed. Melbourne is the only city in the world that has five international standard sporting facilities, all located on the fringe of its central business district (a testament to this city’s love for all things sports). It is also one of the most culturally diverse cities in Australia, with over 38% of the population hailing from overseas – this diversity is displayed everywhere you go, from the cuisine to the architecture. Melbourne is a haven for foodies, culture vultures and is home some of the best shopping in Australia. However, it is the friendly and welcoming people of this city that will make a visit to Melbourne a truly unforgettable experience. Not that we’re biased or anything.

MONEY MATTERS If you work for an employer, chances are they cover the cost of at least some of your business travel expenses – airfares, accommodation, car hire and maybe even some meals. If they don’t, are you aware of what you can and cannot claim? With 30 June just around the corner, we provide some brief guidelines that may come in handy when compiling your tax return – and help to keep your accountant happy!
What can I claim?
What information do I need?
• Travel from home to your place of employment, although some exceptions may apply
Here’s a tax deduction claims rule that goes double for work travel – keep your receipts! The first step to accurate accounts management is accurate record-keeping. Receipts, expense reports, bank statements, payslips – these will all become the evidence your accountant is going to ask for when preparing your tax return. Keep them safe and keep them organised. A shoebox under the bed is not recommended - but it is probably better than nothing! If your travel includes overnight stays, you may also need to complete a travel diary to support your claims.
The short answer is, any business related expense is tax deductible. For travel, this may include things such as: • Overnight accommodation • Meals (if your travel included an overnight stay) • Transport (taxis, public transport, car hire etc.) • Laundering of uniforms • Travel between two different workplaces
What can’t I claim? For your personal tax return, you can only claim for expenses that you have incurred personally that are directly related to your employment. Generally, you may not be able to claim for: • Expenses for which you will be reimbursed • Speeding tickets or parking fines
Getting more information This article provides you with some very general information, and should not be taken as financial advice. We definitely recommend seeking the services of an accountant or financial advisor, who can provide expert information tailored to your individual financial circumstances. Alternatively, you can find further information by visiting the website of the Australian Taxation Office by clicking here or by calling them on 132 865.

REBEL RUNWAYS
The science of flying is one of greatest innovations of the last century. It began connecting people globally long before the internet came along. In some places, access is difficult, the terrain is challenging or space is, shall we say, limited. In these places, the thrills go to extreme levels and the adventure begins at the airport. I’m sure you’ll agree, the specialist pilots who navigate these terrifying runways must have nerves of steel!
Ice Runway, Antarctica This stretch of snow and ice has no paved runways, it is purely crushed ice. While there is more than enough room on the Antarctic icefields to land the supersized C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III, the problems lie in estimating the weight of the plane to ensure it doesn’t roll when it comes in to contact with the slippery ice, and the summer months when the ‘runway’ has a tendency to melt. For the pilots flying supplies to McMurdo Station and the ground crews helping them land safely, ‘routine’ isn’t a word they hear very often.
22 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 06 | 2015
Congonhas Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil Sao Paulo’s Congonhas Airport is notorious among pilots for its short runway and tricky approach. South America’s busiest airport, it was built in the 1930s and is less than 8km from the city centre. Passengers get the sensation of being barely above the high rise flats that line the final approach. Given the limited amount of room, pilots have zero margin of error during landings and take-offs. In fact, the runway is known as the ‘aircraft carrier’, as pilots are advised to abort their landing if they don’t touch down within the first 355m of runway.
Courchevel International Airport, France The fun begins even before attempting to land, as the pilots navigate their way through the French Alps made up of equal parts majesty and treachery. Once through, the pilot then has to manoeuvre the plane on to a mountain runway that is just 545m long. If that wasn’t scary enough, the runway at Courchevel also has a hill in the middle, a gradient of 18.5% and a vertical drop at the end. Pilots are required to complete hours of additional training, exams and practice with an empty plane before being able to attempt this with passengers.
Juancho E Yrausquin Airport, Saba, Netherlands Antilles Getting to this paradise is truly a harrowing adventure. The Saba runway is officially the world’s shortest commercial runway at a teeny 350m. This Caribbean landing site is surrounded by high hills and both ends of the runway drop in to the sea. Thankfully, only small aircraft such as Cessna can land here. As one pilot commented, “Both us and passengers risk our lives daily. But, eh, what people will do to get to their favourite holiday destination!”
Gibraltar Airport, Gibraltar Gibraltar is a small British territory located between Morocco and Spain. Its airport was built during WWII and continues to serve as both a Royal Airforce Base and commercial and passenger airport. Located between a bustling city and a mountain, the 1800m long runway intersects Gibraltar’s busiest road, Winston Churchill Avenue. Cutting through everyday life, the road has to be closed every time a plane lands or departs.

Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan Overpopulation and land scarcity meant creativity had to play a big part in developing a feasible air traffic solution. Three miles off the coast in Osaka Bay, engineers built Kansai International Airport on an artificial island. Visible from space, the construction took ten years to complete and can be accessed by car, subway and high speed train. The hazards faced by Kansai are manifold. Earthquakes, cyclones and unstable sandy soil all threaten this 4km by 2km island. The unexpected threat, however, lies in global warming, which may eventually drown this feat of engineering due to rising ocean levels.
Did we miss your favourite rebel runway? Send us an email or leave a comment on Facebook with your tale.
Princess Juliana International Airport, Simpson Bay, Saint Maarten This famous runway is right next to a beach, with planes landing right overhead of tourists. The sight of watching a take-off or landing is quite a tourist draw in itself. However, the planes come much closer than people think and even the force from the engines can harm onlookers. There have been countless cases of the pure force of jet engines overturning cars and even medium sized trucks. In addition, signs posted warn of serious physical injury and even death.

If you know you have a meeting in a month’s time, submit your travel request as soon as it’s feasible. The sooner we have your travel approved, the sooner we can secure you the best available rate. The later you leave it, the more expensive it becomes and the greater the risk of your preferred flight time / accommodation not being available.
Our technology partner Amadeus makes organising your upcoming trips as easy as pie.
Let us know as soon as possible if you need to make changes to your trip. The sooner you let us know, the more likely there is to be availability. If you are changing on the day, remember – in order for us to make changes to your flights you cannot be checked in. If you are checked in, you’ll have to be unchecked before we can alter your booking. If you’re extending flights, ensure you take in to consideration the extension of any other services you may need including accommodation and car hire.
Flexibility If you know there’s a strong chance your meeting might run overtime or you just like to prepare for contingencies, it might be worth booking a flexible ticket, especially on the return journey. ‘Flexi’ fares are more expensive, but the up-side is you can make changes on the day of departure. Consider whether this is truly necessary before putting in your travel request though.
Thoroughly read your itinerary As your travel agent, we are often required to make snap decisions about the best option for your flights or accommodation, depending upon availability. Thoroughly check your itinerary to ensure everything lines up with your requirements. Contact us immediately if you need any adjustments made. If there are major availability or pricing issues, we will generally contact you or your travel arranger first before processing your booking. Follow up as quickly as possible.
Simply download and register with CheckMyTrip. You can view past and upcoming trips, add new trips and even check in to your flights directly from the app. Available for Apple by clicking here or for Android by clicking here. A link is also included on every confirmation we send out.
Know Your Fare Rules You don’t have to be a travel agent to know what changes you can make to your flights or how much luggage you’re allowed. Fair warning - airline staff have a lot of discretion when it comes to what they will and won’t do at the airport, regardless of the ‘official’ policy. This discretion can lead to passengers misunderstanding the fare rules and creating an expectation of service which may not always be met. In addition, a higher frequent flyer status will generally open a lot more doors and make airline staff more amenable to bending the rules at the airport. At the very least, know what your ticket allows and remember – an airline employee putting you on an earlier flight with no questions asked and no extra charge is probably the exception rather than the rule. If you’re unsure, give us a call to confirm.
Tell us your preferences Every piece of information you give us we will utilise to ensure each trip is as pleasant as possible. If you have a favourite seat on the plane, are lactose intolerant or can only sleep when facing north, let us know and we will try our best to accommodate your needs. Update your preferences easily by clicking here and completing our traveller profile form. For information on how we collect, store and use your personal information, please see our Information Collection and Privacy Policy.
make your company’s travel policy work for you by joining the programs that will give you the biggest rewards. It’s not just about airline points either. Join hotel loyalty programs for places you stay at regularly, they can offer some pretty spectacular benefits including late check out, extra services and even complimentary upgrades.
Extend your trip There is an ever-increasing trend that sees pleasure being mixed with business. Since you’re there anyway, why not try and make the most of it? Depending on where you are and if you are able to, perhaps look at extending a day or two and exploring the local area. If your work travel finishes on a Friday, Before booking a leisure portion of a business trip, check whether your corporate travel insurance policy covers you (and your family if they are joining you) for leisure travel – sometimes it will, sometimes it won’t. If it doesn’t you’ll need to arrange travel insurance that covers your entire journey – not just a portion.
Frequent Flyer and Loyalty Programs Business travel does have some personal perks, the largest of which is the ability to build up those loyalty program points and status credits. If you are a regular business traveller, TURBULENCE | ISSUE 06 2015 | 29
DUOLINGO Learn Languages for Free
Learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Irish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and English. Totally fun. Totally free.
Two doctors embarked on a mission with one core ideal - to make learning a language fun and free for everyone. With that in mind they launched Duolingo – an app that not only turns language education in to a game and produces effective and measurable results. According to independent research carried out by the City University of New York and the University of South Carolina, an average of 34 hours of Duolingo are equivalent to a full university semester of language education. Scooping up accolades including Google’s ‘Best of the Best’ two years running, some of the features of the Duolingo app include: • Goal oriented learning from as little as 5 minutes a day • Teaches speaking, reading and writing – correcting grammar and spelling throughout the course • Unlock special features as you progress through the course • Chart your success using the app or via the Duolingo website • Reminds you to practice, and encourages you to review previous lessons This app is perfectly adaptable to your wants – whether it be as a just for fun learning experience, or perhaps even as a supplement to your child learning a language at school. Combine using the app with their website for an even more in-depth learning experience. One of my team has been learning German using Duolingo for the last few weeks, and already has a vocabulary of 150 words. www.duolingo.com Available on Android HERE

Travel information & Industry News AIR NZ ADDS PREMIUM TO MORE ROUTES Air New Zealand has taken its premium wins at Skytrax one step further. The airline has announced that its awardwinning Premium Economy will soon be available on the airline’s Tasman, Pacific Island and Bali services. At the recent Skytrax World Airline Awards, the carrier scored gold for the World’s Best Premium Economy Class, as well as Best Premium Economy Class airline seat. And now anyone travelling on its Boeing 777 and 787-9 Dreamliner operated Tasman, Pacific Island and Bali services can book the fares, effective from October 25. Air New Zealand’s chief sales and commercial officer Cam Wallace says that it had previously been difficult to offer Premium Economy as a product given the mixed bag of aircraft flying the short haul routes.
JAPAN WORLD’S FASTEST TRAIN new record The world’s fastest train has a new speed with Japan taking the record to new extremes. According to The Guardian, a new prototype train in Japan now levitates, hovering around 10cm above the tracks as it is propelled forward by electrically charged magnets. Clocking in at a speedy 603km per hour in a test recently, officials are describing it as a “comfortable” ride along the tracks near Mount Fuji. The seven-car maglev – short for “magnetic levitation” – was carrying 49 Central Japan Railway employees, and covered 1.8km in just 11 seconds. By 2027, a Tokyo – Nagoya maglev line could be up and running, which would take just 40 minutes travel time. By 2045, according to The Guardian, maglev trains are expected to cover the 410km distance between Tokyo and Osaka in just one hour and seven minutes. 32 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 06 | 2015
“With the arrival of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, refurbishment of our Boeing 777-200 fleet and exit of the Boeing 747400, we now have a consistent Premium Economy offering across our twin aisle wide body fleet,” he said. “We know many of our customers enjoy the extra space and comfort when travelling Premium Economy on our long haul services and we’re looking forward to extending this product to shorter flights.” Air New Zealand’s Premium Economy on Tasman, Pacific Island and Bali services is similar to its long haul product and includes a range of benefits, including greater space and premium food as well as additional baggage allowances, premium check-in and priority boarding. From Travel Weekly
“The ride was comfortable and stable,” Yasukazu Endo, the head of the Maglev Test Centre, told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. “We would like to continue analysing data and make use of it in designing the cars and other equipment.” The new record came less than a week after the train reached 590km per hour, according to The Guardian, soaring through its own 2003 record of 581km per hour. The planned top speed of Britain’s HS2 highspeed rail link, by comparison, will be about 400km per hour. Despite the hefty price tag, Japan is hoping to sell its high-speed rail technology overseas as part of an attempt to revive the world’s third-biggest economy through infrastructure exports. VIRGIN AUSTRALIA CODESHARE EXPANSION ON SILK AIR
TRAINEE PILOT GETS SHOCK OF HIS LIFE
Virgin Australia is pleased to announce it has expanded the VA codeshare network on SilkAir’s newest services into Australia, offering year-round, direct flights between Singapore and Cairns, under the VA code, for the first time. SilkAir will offer two triangle services per week between SINDRW-CNS-SIN, operated twice per week and SIN-CNS-DRWSIN, once per week. Both services will be operated by SilkAir’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft, configured with 12 Business Class and 150 Economy Class seats. The new services compliment MI’s existing SIN-DRW-SIN route, which are offered on VA codeshare and operate up to three times per week.
A YOUNG pilot got the shock of his life when he realised midflight that there was a stowaway on his plane — a cat. The black-and-white feline can be seen scrambling up the wing and clinging on for dear life as the pilot and his passenger cruise around Kouroi, French Guiana. The VIDEO was taken during a flight at aviation school Club with the video captioned, “Routine maiden flight until ... the importance of looking into the wings before each flight”. The pilot, who recovers from his initial shock, can be seen laughing with the passenger as they make a smooth landing, the cat still on board and in one piece.
Fares are now available from the Sean Simmons Travel specialists.
The Club confirmed the cat’s safety saying: “For your information the cat is fine — it continues with its role as club mascot,” the club added.
