“ May all your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view…where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you.” Edward Abbey
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express 4 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05 | 2015
We kick off this month with a politically incorrect question. One that may inflame or inspire, or may cause a deep sleep, however, its one that more and more people seem to be asking, and carries enormous emotional reaction from news commentators and journalists alike. “Do you feel that Australian’s are becoming ‘charity-phobic’ ? I did say it was a doozey of a question, however, we sincerely hope to not offend, just to ensure WE do OUR bit and ensure we support genuine causes.
FROM THE EDITOR
On that note, please spare a thought, and a prayer, for Nepal. A country very close to my heart after several incredible visits which, I can honestly state, changed my life. (And I know has affected many of our readers too). Please consider supporting, in anyway possible, and help rebuild Nepal. Sean Simmons Travel opened its doors in 2012, and the ride so far has been one of incredible experiences and achievements. To top this run, I am excited to announce our progression to “finalist” in the National Travel Industry Awards 2015, in 2 categories. Best Travel Agency Corporate – Single Location Best travel Agency Manager – Corporate Single Location This is a huge achievement for our team, who I congratulate for this success, and thank for their determination. As a manager, I have never been more proud; as a small business owner, I have never been more nervous! I will be in Sydney on 21 and 26 May, presenting our case to an amazing panel of judges, and then we wait, until 18 July, when we hit Sydney for the awards ceremony. We will keep you posted. Our online booking tool, EPower, has landed and can be found on our website HERE. We welcome you to take a look and send us your feedback. We also welcomed aboard The Victorian Farmers Federation, and are in the process of setting up Bicycle Network as a partner, offering specialised travel services to 45000 members across Victoria. In this edition, we celebrate all things rail. We often forget about other modes of transport when it is so easy to jump on a plane, so, please indulge us as we put the spotlight on train travel, where so often the journey is so spectacular that its criminal to just “fly over”! Marvel at the Trans-Siberian that departs Vladivostok on Russia’s Eastern seaboard on its long haul past the largest lake in the world, to St Petersburg via Moscow: and be captivated by the awe inspiring majesty of the Rockie Mountains, from Vancouver to Calgary on the Rockie Mountaineer; we will show you some of the world’s most sought after journeys to inspire you and whet your appetite! As always, happy reading.

Budget THE ABBOTT GOVERNMENT RELEASED ITS 2015 BUDGET LAST NIGHT, BUT HOW WILL IT AFFECT AUSTRALIA’S TOURISM INDUSTRY ON A POSITIVE NOTE? This month has been all about the budget and how it will affect the various sectors. So what’s in it for the travel and tourism sector? Travel Weekly provided this breakdown of the good…and the not so good. “Good progress” has been made for Australia’s tourism industry in the 2015 Budget according to minister Andrew Robb, following the Abbott Government’s commitment of a $36.7 million top up toward Tourism Australia activities. With tourism now recognised as one of five National Investment Priorities, minister for trade and investment, with responsibility for tourism, Andrew Robb said Australia’s tourism investment pipeline is now expected to grow 9%. 22 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05 | 2015
“This funding will ensure our marketing dollar continues to deliver for our industry despite fluctuations in the exchange rate, and with international visitor spend set to grow to $33 billion this year alone, it is vital we stay committed to our international marketing efforts,” ATEC managing director, Peter Shelly commented. The additional $36.7 million for Tourism Australia will assist in supporting marketing activities abroad and as a result of new foreign exchange arrangements will see the national tourism body compensated for a weaker Australian dollar, consistent with Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio partners.
Key Budget outcomes for tourism: • Tourism Australia to get a $8.6 million increase in government appropriation in 2015/16 and a projected total increase of $36.7 million over the forward estimates ($8.6m in 2016/17, $8.9m in 2017/18 and $10.5m in 2018/19) due to the application of new foreign exchange arrangements. • $30 million to increase promotion of foreign direct investment in priority areas such as tourism infrastructure, including Austrade’s global investment teams. • $18 million for expanded Australia Week trade and promotional events in China, India, US and ASEAN regions. • $5.2 million to expand Austrade’s Match Australia Programme, which showcases the country to international business people attending major sporting events such as the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Other initiatives the Budget builds on to support tourism include: • New air services agreements with China to triple capacity over the next 18 months to 67,000 seats per week by the end of 2016. • A three-year, multipleentry visa scheme for approved tourist and business applicants from China.
• Launching pilots for online visitor visa lodgement for China and India, with full roll-out by the end of the year.
ATEC managing director, Peter Shelley said the increase could render Australia less competitive in growing market share.
• New Work and Holiday Arrangements allowing up to 5,000 Chinese Work and Holiday Makers into Australia annually.
“Today’s traveller is highly discerning and price sensitive, and visa fee hikes present an added barrier which can work against even the best marketing effort.”
• Freezing the Passenger Movement Charge for the current term of office. • Rolling out a $43 million Tourism Demand-Driver Infrastructure Programme with the overwhelming majority of states and territories announcing key projects. • Extending streamlined SmartGate processing to visitors from Hong Kong and China.
WHILE INDUSTRY BODIES WELCOMED THE $36.7 MILLION BUDGET TOP UP FOR TOURISM AUSTRALIA, TAX HIKES AND INCREASES IN VISA FEES ARE A CONCERN AS A POTENTIAL TO NEGATIVELY PUT THE BREAKS ON GROWTH IN THE INDUSTRY. Under new measures, all visas applied offshore will be slugged with additional costs to see the government raising $437.1 million over four years. Visitors from China will see fees increase from $130 to $135, with that market alone footing a $5 million bill, while working holiday makers will be paying an additional $5 million as their application fees increase from $420 to $440.
In addition, the government will remove the tax-free threshold of $18,000 for holiday visa makers forcing them to pay tax from the first dollar they earn. The move is likely to affect around 200,000 youth travellers to Australia each year, which spend an average $13,000 during their stay. “While many working holiday visa visitors do not register for the tax free threshold, promotion of additional costs for the application fee and incountry, will likely have a detrimental effect on Australia’s desirability as a destination for these visitors and many others,” Shelley said. Instead, the government is expected to rake in more than $540 million over the next four years, and coupled with the tenth consecutive increase in application fees for working holiday makers, industry bodies argue many will reconsider their travel plans to Australia.
“With more than a billion global travellers now deciding on their next destination, Australian needs to ensure it is competitively positioned to maximise its share of the lucrative international travel dollar,” Shelley added. The Budget also hit the tourism industry with $600 million in new taxes and charges, but Osmond argues with higher fees and “no new money for tourism marketing, Australia is fighting with one hand tied behind its back”. “The tourism industry has argued that its vital Australia should be reducing the costs of visas from key markets, like China, to increase our appeal in the face of proactive visa reform by many of our major competitors.” “Despite raking in more taxes than ever from visitors, including the Passenger Movement Charge which will collect $1 billion in revenue for the government in 201516, funding for tourism marketing has failed again to increase and is falling further behind in real terms. “If this trend continues, Australia will be overtaken by countries hungry to support their tourism industries,” Osmond said.

UPDATES & NEWS Changes to South African immigration laws to affect travelling with minors
BRISBANE HOME TO NEW VIRGIN AUSTRALIA BASES
Virgin Australia would like to advise effective 01 June 2015, new immigration laws will be introduced by the South African Government. The new immigration rules stipulate stringent documentation requirements for minors (i.e. persons under 18) travelling to and from South Africa regardless of nationality and whether travelling with both parents, a single parent, with other adults or travelling unaccompanied.
Virgin Australia today announced it has established a long haul international cabin crew base, long haul international pilot base and dedicated East Coast charter operations base in Brisbane.
The following documentation will need to be presented by minors travelling to and from South Africa as at 01 June 2015 in addition to a valid passport: • an “unabridged” original birth certificate and; • documents granting approval for travel by the absent parent or parents, or documentation showing why such a document from the absent parent is not required. Please note: Guests commencing travel in May with a scheduled return date post 01 June 2015 from South Africa will be asked to produce the required documentation upon exiting South Africa. These new bases build on Virgin Australia’s strong presence in Queensland, with the airline’s operational headquarters based in Bowen Hills, Brisbane and a maintenance base at Brisbane Airport. John Borghetti, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Australia, said: “Queensland continues to be a key market for Virgin Australia and the introduction of the international cabin crew and pilot bases and the charter base are testament to that. “Importantly, the recent introduction of daily flights between Los Angeles and Brisbane also help boost trade and investment between Queensland and the United States and continue to support the ongoing growth of the Queensland tourism industry,” Mr Borghetti said. Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk welcomed the announcement. “This is a great show of confidence in Queensland as a place to do business,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“Virgin Australia has recognised that Queensland is a wonderful place to live, work and invest – and our tourism industry has benefitted enormously from their commitment to this state”. The long haul international cabin crew base will see 168 new positions filled with crew from across Australia. Virgin Australia has provided assistance to crew moving to Brisbane from interstate to ensure they can make the most of their new careers. The cabin crew base is in addition to the long haul pilot base that was established in October 2014. The new base supports around 65 Captains, First Officers and Second Officers of Virgin Australia’s Boeing 777 aircraft. Two Fokker 50 charter aircraft will be permanently based in Brisbane, supported by a significant investment in resources and infrastructure. The East Coast charter base includes 39 staff in a variety of roles, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers and business development team members. The investment builds on the success of Virgin Australia’s charter services from Brisbane to Miles and Roma, and is part of Virgin Australia’s push to bring competition to the East Coast charter market. Virgin Australia currently operates more than 400 charter services across Australia each month.

SEAN’s
TRAVEL TIPS In an ideal world, your travel plans execute themselves flawlessly. However, what do you do when things go awry?
28 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05 | 2015
This month, we bring you the solutions to some of the biggest travel nightmares. Hopefully we can help you minimise the inconvenience and you can keep holidaying like, well, almost nothing happened. Nightmare 1: You Miss Your Flight
You’re stuck in traffic, all the lanes are closed because of an accident and you’re watching the minutes until check in closes slowly dwindle. You feel a tightness in your chest and you begin wondering if in fact it would be faster to walk. The solution: This could can really put a spanner in the works, especially if you have connecting flights. If you know or even suspect you might be late, call us. WHY? The last thing you want to do is no-show for your flight and forfeit the entire trip! Whilst we cannot guarantee that we can get the airline to wait for you, we can do what we can to amend your booking and/or advise you on the best course of action. And remember, we manage our after hour’s emergency calls ourselves, so you will always be speaking with someone familiar with your travel.
Nightmare 2: You Lose Your Wallet or Passport
Perhaps you were pickpocketed, or you left it in a restaurant. These things sometimes happen. First things first – relax. Panicking in this situation is
likely to make things worse. The solution: The best advice we can give you is preventative. Leave your wallet in the safe at the hotel. Take some cash and / or a card in and keep them in an inside pocket or the inside (not outside) pockets of your bag, along with your ID. Unfortunately, if you do lose your wallet or your passport, there is no easy solution. First things first, report it to police and immediately cancel your cards. Check your travel insurance policy to see if you are covered for lost / stolen cash and make your way to the Australian embassy to get a new passport. If this is going to affect your ongoing travel plans, call us and we will do what we can to make alternative arrangements.
Nightmare 3: You Get Lost
There is nothing more exhilarating than exploring a foreign country – and nothing more frightening than suddenly finding yourself in a dodgy looking part of town and no idea how to get back to your hotel. The solution: The internet is probably your biggest saviour, however global roaming charges can be expensive. Purchasing a local SIM can cut these costs down and will generally come with some data that will enable you to do the important things, like logging on to Google Maps. Alternatively, save the hotel phone number in case you need to call to find out where you are and how to get back.
Nightmare 4: You Find Yourself Horribly, Horribly Sick
Nothing puts a damper on a holiday quite like a terrible case of Bali belly or, even worse, winding up in hospital in a foreign country with some strange, exotic fever. The solution: Get your shots and purchase travel insurance. As your travel agent, we cannot stress enough the importance of ensuring you are covered for all eventualities while you’re away – this means planning a visit to your doctor at least a month before travel to get the necessary vaccinations, and purchase travel insurance the second you book your tickets. If you do find yourself spending a few restful days cooped up in your hotel room, make sure you have your Kindle loaded with a few choice reads.
The team at Sean Simmons Travel are always here to help. Always remember, we are the solution to most of your travel nightmares. We will advise, liaise and do everything we can to ensure your travel plans go well - even when they don’t. For more information on planning your next holiday, make sure you visit Sean Simmons Travel website by CLICKING HERE
Nightmare 5: The Hotel You Booked is Simply Awful
What might look fantastic online might not always match the reality. If your accommodations aren’t quite up to par, there are a number of things you can do. The solution: The first thing is to remain calm. Don’t make threats. Instead, take notes and photos and compose a strongly worded letter to the management when you have nestled safely in a new hotel. Contact us – we will assist you to find new accommodation, liaise with the hotel to handle your complaint and cancel your existing reservation. TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05| 2015 | 29
FLIGHT DECK
Travel information & Industry News CATHAY TO SPLASH AUSTRALIA ACROSS SCREENS Cathay Pacific is the latest airline to sign a major marketing deal with Tourism Australia, with both parties set to invest $2 million in 2015. The deal will see Hong Kong’s national carrier promoting Australia to key international markets, as well as providing tickets to support key TA marketing activities, including flying more than 200 travel agents from North Asia to attend the Corroboree Greater China event on Hamilton Island which was held recently. The agreement also covers joint marketing activities in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and the UK as well as destination content on Cathay Pacific’s in-flight entertainment system. Some 1.5 million Chinese travellers are expected to visit Australia by 2020, making it the biggest source of international visitors the country, overtaking New Zealanders. TA Managing Director, John O’Sullivan said it was a first for the organisation to sign a ‘multi-market deal’ with Cathay Pacific.
MALAYSIA AIRLINES GROWTH BACK ON TRACK Malaysia airlines has recovered from two catastrophic blows in the past 12 months proving it’s still a popular choice for Australian travellers. The carrier achieved a 7.8% increase in passenger numbers in February 2015, up from the same period in 2014, according to the International Airline Activity report released by the Australian government on Tuesday. It comes after a horror 2014 for the carrier, with flight MH370 disappearing from the skies in March and flight MH17 shot down in July over war-torn Eastern Ukraine, killing 298 passengers including 38 Australian citizens and residents. 30 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05 | 2015
“Cathay Pacific is one of the world’s most respected airlines and an aviation partner we’re very keen to work with, especially given the strength of their footprint within north Asia. The deal provides a strong platform to further grow inbound tourism from some of Australia’s most important inbound visitor markets,” he said. Corroboree Greater China will host 400 delegates, including 200 of greater China’s top travel agents, Australian tourism operators and travel media and represents one of the largest annual international trade events staged in Australia. During their stay delegates will participate in a three-day workshop, followed by a day exploring the Great Barrier Reef and tourism attractions of the Whitsundays. The greater Chinese agents will then spend five days on familiarisation visits, between them visiting every state and territory. Qantas broke off its $50 million partnership with TA in late 2012, after CEO Alan Joyce accused the group of trying to sabotage the airline, news reports claim. From Travel Weekly
Malaysia Airlines regional senior vice president PK Lee said the result was encouraging, but there is still more work to be done. “This is our main market outside of Malaysia and connecting our continents is our ultimate goal,” Lee said in a statement. “We have been flying in and out of Australia for more than 40 years and are committed to helping this region build closer ties with Asia for mutual benefit.” Sean Simmons Travel couldn’t be happier for MH – we proudly support and sell Malaysia Airlines with no doubt as to the quality of the airline. Well done! From Travel Weekly
AIR NEW ZEALAND OPENS NEW LOUNGE IN SYDNEY Last Friday, Air New Zealand opened its new international network lounge at Sydney Airport. The lounge’s ultramodern layout, the fruit of a collaboration with architectural firm Gensler, was influenced by the feedback of high value customers across international markets. At over 1,500sqm, the lounge is well-equipped to cater to the needs of its diverse clientele. It features a bar where customers can enjoy barista made coffee, wines and cocktails, and a well-stocked kids’ zone for those with children. Whether travellers are looking to relax and refresh or plug in and get some work done pre-flight, they are sure to find a space that suits them. In Sydney for today’s opening, Air New Zealand chief sales and commercial officer Cam Wallace said the launch was an important milestone in the airline’s wider programme that will see it open a number of new and refurbished lounges over the next two years. Air New Zealand International Lounge at Sydney Airport is located on level two of the international terminal and opens to eligible customers tomorrow.

ONLY ONE AUSTRALIAN PROPERTY MADE THE LIST OF THE TOP 100 HOTEL IN THE WORLD…CAN YOU GUESS WHICH ONE? Just six months after reopening its lavish doors, the Langham, Sydney has been ranked as one of the top 100 hotels in the world by the highly regarded, Robb Report. The Sydney city hotel was the only property in Australia or New Zealand to be listed
in the annual report, which compiles the world’s most exclusive hotels, villas and luxury retreats. “We are humbled to be recognised on a global level; and in the company of the world’s finest luxury hotels” Langham Sydney General Manager, Sonia Lefevre, said. The Langham, Sydney, previously The Observatory Hotel, was purchased by the group in 2012 from Orient Express and
rebranded in the same year before unveiling redesign plans in 2014. The 98room re-development was executed in four short months with doors reopening late last year. “Sydney is a glamorous city, like Paris, London or New York and there is no secret we had hoped to cater to people who are aspirational about those style of cities; therefore to be recognised as one of the best hotels in the world so early in our
repositioning journey, means we have certainly delivered what we set out to achieve.” Other prestigious properties to make the coveted list include The St. Regis New York, Austria’s famous Hotel Sacher Wien and The Waldorf Astoria Beijing.
HE BEST REWARD PROGRAM 2015 Loyalty is a fickle thing, except in the skies when the notion of a ‘free’ seat on the next holiday prompts punters (or business travellers) to literally put all their points in one basket. However, in recent years frequent flyer programmes tend to vary widely and aren’t measured by the same yardstick, so when it comes to flexibility and redemption availability who comes out on top? IdeaWorks researched the availability of rewards flights for its annual Switchfly Reward Seat Availability Survey across 25 different frequent flyer programs. The company made over 7600 booking queries on 280 specific dates during March 2015 for each airline and the percentage in the chart below shows the “availability rate”, which represents the percentage of dates redemption bookings could be made. Closer to home, Virgin’s Velocity Frequent Flyer has been ranked as the top in the Asia Pacific region and second in the world for overall reward availability, a third consecutive win for the airline. Southwest Airlines and airberlin were tied in first place, followed by Air Canada and Singapore Airlines rounding out the global top five. TURBULENCE | ISSUE 05| 2015 | 31
