MAPS.ME Offline Map & Routing Finding your way in a strange country is not only daunting, but can burn a giant hole in your pocket come time to pay your bill if you spend a lot of time online downloading maps. Introducing a handy offline alternative. Maps.Me allows you to download maps to your phone so you can use them without wasting precious data – plus you don’t have to worry if you are in an area where connectivity is, shall we say, less than satisfactory. Being offline does mean that you will need to download your map beforehand while still connected to wi-fi to avoid unnecessary data charges. We recommend doing it at home before you go. It does mean that you are taking up space on your phone but to put it in perspective, the entire map of Spain is only 131MB in size (or slightly more if you choose the handy car routing version). Once your map has been downloaded, you can enjoy a range of fantastic features, such as the auto-follow mode, so the map automatically turns to the direction you are facing. Create bookmarks of your favourite locations, and view your maps in high detail so you can easily locate thousands of points of interest. With Maps.Me the entire world is in your pocket, without burning a hole in it. www.maps.me Available on Android HERE

SEAN’s
TRAVEL TIPS
This month we take a look at what Australia’s carriers are offering for international roaming services and give you a few handy pointers for a successful roam away from home.
If you’ve ever planned an overseas trip chances are you’ve mentioned the words ‘international roaming’ and received all sorts of (mostly unsolicited) advice on ‘what you should do’. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the subject and will emphatically declare their network to be the only sensible option.
protest against exorbitant international charges and some are offering quite affordable daily rates (Optus, Vodafone) or packages based on length of stay (Telstra).
The truth is, international roaming can be an expensive exercise no matter who your carrier is, especially if not well considered and catered for your individual needs.
WITH YOUR PROVIDER…
Recently, many of Australia’s larger mobile companies have finally begun to respond to the consumers’ ongoing 22 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 09 | 2015
It is still pretty easy to get stung if you don’t know what to look out for, so here are our tips that should help you along the way.
Look at your habits If you are a high-functioning social media addict who can’t go five minutes without updating your Facebook status or have Instagrammed your every meal since 2010 - then make sure you have a data plan that will cope, else you might find yourself
uploading nothing but two minute noodles on your return home. If you enjoy the privilege of being able to call your friends from the top of the Eiffel Tower but can wait until you get back to the hotel wi-fi to share your photos, look at options that give you the most talk time.
what is included, more importantly what isn’t included and most importantly what it is going to cost if you go over the limits. While some providers offer unlimited talk and text, it is most often the excess data charges that will get you in the end.
It’s generally more cost effective to overestimate your usage than underestimate, so when speaking to your provider and weighing up your alternatives, make sure you leave yourself (and your budget) some wiggle room.
Watch out for exclusions If you purchase a ‘pack’, make sure you know what is included – and what is not. Examples of general exclusions include MMS (sending and receiving pictures by text) and accessing your voicemail from overseas. Make sure you know what the additional charges are so you can budget accordingly.
Read the fine print If you do purchase a ‘package’ from your telco provider, make sure you read the terms and conditions. Understand
Look at alternatives If you prefer not to run the
risk of a hefty phone bill after you’ve already maxed out the credit card on your holiday, explore alternative options, such as budgeting for and purchasing a local pre-paid SIM, or if you find the prospect of purchasing and setting up a SIM in a foreign country to be scary, look at places like SIM Corner, who offer a full set-up service prior to your departure and offer some fantastic ‘unlimited’ options. SIM Corner can be found after customs near Gate 2 at Melbourne International Airport or order online at simcorner.com If you purchase Covermore travel insurance, you can also get a free global SIM. The rates are comparable to the major carriers with some additional bonuses. With
a Covermore Global SIM you will be able to access Covermore’s emergency assistance line for free 24x7, plus in the event of a natural disaster such as the recent Nepal earthquake, Covermore can locate you using GPS technology, ensuring your safety on your travels. Have a look at: covermoreglobalsim.com
WHEN USING YOUR DEVICE… Turn off mobile data Many apps use data even when just running in the background (for example social media, email, locationbased services). This can contribute to quickly chewing through your allowance. Minimise your data usage by turning off location-based service, or simply turn off your mobile
data when not in use. That way you will get the most out of your limited supply. Use offline apps where possible Many apps like guides or maps (see our Map. Me feature on page 17) are now available offline, meaning they can be used without fear of chewing through large amounts of data. The downside is they may require space on your phone, space which you may be saving for your travel photos and videos.
right for you. Always look at your own personal circumstances and decide based on your individual needs. Ask yourself – are you high data, talk, SMS or a combination thereof? Can you limit yourself or would rather pay a little extra and have more than enough? If you would like more information about any of the carriers or products mentioned in this article, click on their logo below, or contact your carrier directly.

Travel information & Industry News NZ GOVT APPROVES AIR CHINA-Air New Zealand ALLIANCE Air China will launch nonstop services between Beijing and Auckland from December 2015 after the New Zealand government approved a proposed alliance with Air New Zealand. New Zealand Transport Minister Simon Bridges said the partnership between the two Star Alliance carriers was approved by cabinet on Monday and will last for five years and four months. “This alliance means travellers will be able to access more flights and lower fares between New Zealand and Beijing and
Shanghai, ensuring they have access to a greater range of choices,” Bridges said in a statement. “In addition to expanding services, the alliance will mean Air China will actively market New Zealand as a visitor destination.” The two carriers signed a statement of intent to partner on NZ-China routes in November 2014. Air New Zealand will place its NZ code on the new daily Air China flights, which are due to commence on December 10 operated by Airbus A330 aircraft. According to schedules on the Air China website, CA 783 will depart Beijing at 0040 local time, arriving in Auckland at 1810 the same
AUCKLAND NAMED NEW ZEALAND’S TOP AIRPORT FOR 2015. Auckland Airport has been named New Zealand major airport of the year for 2015. The airport was recognised by the New Zealand Airports Association for its impressive passenger growth, the development of new routes and the collaborative approach with stakeholders. “The judges were particularly impressed by the collaborative approach adopted by Auckland Airport with airlines, aviation security and border agencies,” New Zealand Airports Association chief executive Kevin Ward said in a statement on Friday. Auckland Airport passenger numbers grew five per cent to 15.8 million in 2014/15, with domestic travellers up 4.2 percent to 7.2 million and international travellers growing by 5.7 per cent to 8.1 million. International transit passengers increased by 6.7 per cent to half a million, Auckland Airport said in its full year results published on August 24. 24 | TURBULENCE | ISSUE 09 | 2015
day. The reciprocal CA874 is scheduled to take off from Auckland at 2000 and touch down in the Chinese capital at 0430 the next day. It will be Air China’s first destination in NZ. The Kiwi flag carrier will maintain its daily Boeing 787-9 service between Auckland and Shanghai as part of the alliance. VIRGIN AUSTRALIA & NESPRESSO BREW A WORLD-FIRST COLLABORATION Virgin Australia and Nespresso have announced a world-first product collaboration aimed at delivering the finest quality coffee in the sky. Virgin Australia’s newly refitted Business Class cabin on board the Airbus A330 fleet will feature the first ‘Nespresso by B/E Aerospace’ machines in the world. The purpose-built machine is designed to overcome the challenges of making coffee at altitude, by achieving Nespresso’s exact standards of: • C offee flow time, volume and temperature; • Coffee yield; and • C rema and milk foam quality. As part of the development, the machine was tested in an altitude chamber and at high elevations similar to the cabin altitude to confirm the coffee it produced was consistent with the quality achieved on the ground. Virgin Australia Chief Customer Officer Mark Hassell said: “Our partnership with Nespresso is one of the important signature touches that will see Virgin Australia set a new world standard in domestic business class travel.
“Guests on Virgin Australia’s new Airbus A330 Business Class will be the first in the world to experience this new technology, aimed at creating the finest coffee at 30,000 feet. “Our Airbus A330 Business Class dining service is designed to ensure our guests arrive at their destination feeling refreshed and recharged, and coffee plays an important part in that,” Mr Hassell said. Virgin Australia and Nespresso have carefully chosen the on board coffee selection to complement the palate, as taste differs slightly in the air, and will offer three unique blends at launch including Ristretto Intenso, Espresso Forte and Espresso Decaffeinato. Virgin Australia’s resident head chef, Luke Mangan said: “Over the years we have been able to continue to delight our customers with unexpected food and beverage experiences on board. Together we have tackled how to best overcome the fact that we lose 30 per cent of our ability to taste in the sky and now, working with Nespresso will enable us to have an even more creative approach when it comes to developing coffee-inspired drinks and on board treats.”
AIR NEW ZEALAND FAREWELLS THE 737 Air New Zealand has retired its iconic Boeing 737-300 aircraft, with the final flight, NZ557 between Auckland and Christchurch, operated by ZK-NGI on September 6. It closed a chapter of domestic and trans-Tasman aviation that the airline has been marking, well aware of the historic nature of these aircraft and the relationship New Zealanders have with them. “For many New Zealanders, their first flight was probably on a 737 jet, so there are a lot of memories of this aircraft,” Air New Zealand’s fleet manager for the 737-300, first officer Angus Black, told Australian Aviation. After operating its final commercial flight on September 6, ZK-NGI began a farewell tour of New Zealand, including operating scenic flights from Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland and visiting a number of regional centres.
