10,000 - 2500 B.C. \ PRE-HISTORIC AGE The native man was not bound by any artistic constraints and had full freedom of expression. He was an expert in simplifying life. Animals and birds were drawn with just two or three strokes and a good use of symbols and highlights is done.

2500-1900 B.C. \ HARAPPAN CIVILIZATION The earliest script in India so far known is the Indus Valley pictographic script. Over 4000 symbol bearing seals have been discovered in the Indus Valley. Indus Script it is said to be the ancestor of the both, the secular Brahmi as well as the traditional vernacular scripts of India.

1500-600 B.C. \ VEDIC PERIOD Some ascetics while medidating saw 50 petals. These included the ‘Chakras’ of human body which on co-relating with different sounds, gave birth to the 50 letters of Devanagari. Lord Shiva who is known for going into dance for acquiring a device to save the Vedas and gave signs of writing in the form of crescent marks by striking his 'Damaru'. The 'Damaru' as it strikes gave 5 classes of sound - Guttural, Palatal, Lingual, Dental & Labial.

3rd Century B.C. \ MAURYAN EMPIRE Brahmi, the script of the brahmans is written from left to right and is the mother of all Indian scripts including the Devanagari script. Ashoka used this script for his inscriptions on rocks and pillars to promulgate advice to his subjects. Panini's Ashtadhyayi , the earliest known treatise on Classical Sanskrit grammar is believed to belong to this period.
