Celebrating The Coast
One of the reasons that we started Seashore Creative was to have the space to focus on our love of the coast and there is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you visit the coast. If you have an affinity with the sea, when you visit it’s like an injection of energy, similar to watering a plant, your body breathes deeper, you stand a little straighter, and you relax as you stop and stare and take in the view. Much of the excitement about a visit to the coast is in the anticipation. As children making the long journey in the car, or train, it’s usually a competition to see who will spot the sea first, often just a tantalising glimpse of blue on the horizon, before it is lost again behind trees, or hills. Being on the beach brings a freedom, hours slip away, there are fewer day to day pressures, the risk of getting sand in their devices means that families learn to play again, games that have been the same for generations. The general health benefits of the coast are well-known, walking, swimming, relaxing and breathing the fresh air benefits your whole body as long as you use the correct sun protection and swim safely.
Often the escape to the coast, inspires creativity, the sights, sounds and textures free your mind from the day-to-day routine and clutter of your home or in-box! Free from the demands of daily tasks, you discover a new freedom to explore possibilities. Whether you are visiting on your own, or with family and friends there is often a sense of shared pleasure at the sights and sounds of the coast. The laughter and excitement of children playing; the fun and activity in the villages and harbours as they open their doors to the curious visitors and celebrate their own events on the water and in the streets with festivals and carnivals. The colour of the water; the range of blues from turquoise to darkest indigo, that are rarely seen elsewhere, the way the sun dances on the water creating glittering showers of stars. The feeling of the sand underfoot, undulating and massaging your feet and the first refreshing touch of the water, waking you up from a thousand sleeps! Finally at the end of the day the shared delight of everyone as the sun paints the sky with its own magical sunset! Footnote: One of the most important things to do if you love the coast, is help to end plastic pollution, don’t use single use plastics and take all your rubbish away with you from the beach and dispose of it carefully. https://www.sas.org.uk Another important way is to take part in beach cleans, find details advertised locally, or through the Marine Conservation Society. https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/greatbritishbeachclean

The Creative Home
“my special place, my sanctuary, the place where I can be creative, or just sit and dream”
For many of us the hustle and bustle of our daily lives means that the quote above often seems unobtainable, and yet there are ways of achieving both the space and time to create your special place. In recent times much emphasis has been made of the need to simplify your home and get rid of clutter. This is particularly difficult for creative people, especially parents. Who can argue against displaying your child’s first creative design - carefully constructed from a random collection of junk, while it may look like clutter, it brings joy to the child and is a source of pride to the parent! Similarly in the creative home there is always a need for workspace and very few crafts are tidy. Having a more relaxed approach does not mean that our homes are messy; it simply means that we have to be more creative about use of space. Creative homes more than any other may have less need to be ‘styled’, but it can be helpful to try and be more organised. One of the first steps can be to take a step back and see your home as a blank canvas, ignoring the current layout and see instead the overall floor plan. More and more people are working from home, particularly in creative businesses. Finding space for your creative business can be a challenge as it often involves more than a desk and a laptop. This often means that many of us need to create multi-functional areas and this is where you can really be creative with the use of space.
FEATURE In some homes architects have created upside down living, usually to allow access to a better view, or because of unusually shaped plots, but as in shared homes, or apartments, the use of the space becomes more fluid and so looking creatively at the space that you have available means that you may discover creative ways of using areas that not only meet your practical needs but also make more sense. One important factor is often finding enough natural light, and as our climate changes, staying cool in summer and warm in the winter. One of the secrets to combining both a sense of order and creative space is to create designated spaces. Gardeners are encouraged to create raised flower beds, or to allocate spaces in their gardens such as Monty Don’s ‘The Jewel Garden’ or the ‘Writing Garden’ separate areas all contained within the overall garden. In the current climate a more holistic and eclectic freer style is also developing. Gardeners and local councils are being encouraged to create wildflower gardens and verges where nature is left to thrive. Within a creative home it is possible to use a similar approach. Have some areas that are freer, while in other areas be more organised. Flowers can also bring an enormous amount of joy, planting a cutting garden where flowers from your childhood, or from your favourite place can evoke a memory. Even a single rose chosen for its perfume, colour or even its name can lift a space and make you smile. Blurring the edges of the interior and exterior means that you can extend your living areas in many ways by creating a garden room, an outside lounging space, or adding a living wall. Creative people often adapt outside spaces as their workshops. In our busy lives it is important to be able to stop, reflect, or bring back memories, so take time to create special areas where a painting, print, or small collection, can take you back to a time and place that you love. To help you in your quest for a creative home we highlight three beautiful and inspirational books. For creative people with a love of the sea we highly recommend Relaxed Coastal Style by Sally Denning, an absolute breath of fresh air and sublime inspiration in how to achieve a home that really evokes the meaning of: “My special place, my sanctuary, the place where I can be creative, or just sit and dream” Sally examines ‘Coastal Elements’ where she looks at colour palettes; drawing inspiration from the natural colours of the ocean as well as the textures of weathered wood, bare floorboards, sun-bleached fabrics and robust linens. In her ‘Coastal Hideaways’ she uses examples from varied coastal homes around the world to share beautiful examples of how to create your own relaxed coastal style.

Relaxed Coastal Style by Sally Denning Synopsis: In Relaxed Coastal Style, Sally Denning offers decorating inspiration for anyone lucky enough to live by the ocean, as well as those who only dream of it. Scientists tell us that living by the ocean makes us happier and healthier: increased views of blue space have a calming effect and sea air improves our ability to absorb oxygen. Being by water brings a sense of tranquility and relaxation and a home by the sea has never been more desirable. The first part of the book offers up Sally’s unique take on coastal style, celebrating the colours and textures of the seaside: bare wooden boards, uncurtained windows, and furnishings covered in robust linen or cotton that will endure salt water and the sun’s rays. Sally also looks at lighting, furniture and coastal decorative accents such as maps, charts and nauticalthemed accessories. She draws inspiration from beachcombing, displaying shells and driftwood to feel close to nature and the sound of the waves. The second half of the book visits a selection of glorious coastal houses, cottages and hideaways that are guaranteed to enchant and inspire. Wherever you live, relaxed Coastal style will inspire you to adopt the relaxed, informal simplicity of life by the sea. https://rylandpeters.com/products/relaxed-coastal-style In Creative Paris by My Little Paris the writers talk about ‘The Spirit of Place’ “The space that surrounds us has direct impact on our behavior, our attitude, and our energy. We know that forest bathing soothes the spirit. Contemplating natural, wide-open spaces – a mountain landscape, the sun setting over the ocean – lets the brain “rest”. Similarly, the layout of the spaces where we work every day, or come home to each night can stifle our creativity - or, conversely, enhance it.” In this exquisite book we are given an exclusive glimpse into the homes and workplaces of some of the most creative and innovative entrepreneurs, sharing Paris’s freshest interiors. Every page is beautifully illustrated revealing personal collections and sources of inspiration.
Creative Paris by My Little Paris Urban Interiors, Inspiring Innovators Synopsis: For the past decade, French online phenomenon My Little Paris has divulged the city’s best-kept secrets in fashion, interiors, and lifestyle to some four million subscribers. In a relaxed apartment on the edge of the Canal SaintMartin, an aquamarine accent wall complements a vintage fridge and matching coffee mugs--setting the tone with the vibrant hue. Birdcages, vinyl records, and colorful kimonos mingle harmoniously with vintage photographs, dazzling African wax cushions, and contemporary art.
The view from a tiny sixth-floor walk-up reveals slate rooftops and open sky, while inside, in fashionshowroom style, a pair of silver Margiela designer boots, a plush orange bomber jacket, and a hot pink visor pepper the furniture. The My Little Paris workspace in an old carousel factory in Montmartre includes a “dream room,” green wall, and rooftop terrace overlooking Sacré-Coeur. This insider’s tour of Paris is made possible only through the abracadabra magic of the team behind Paris’s most popular lifestyle start-up. Their interiors--each sparkling with Parisian style--provide home inspiration and are rich with ideas for sparking creativity. Creative Paris: Urban Interiors, Inspiring Innovators (Flammarion, 2019) by My Little Paris www.amazon.co.uk In Artists’ Homes Tom Harford Thompson presents a collection of individual and eccentric homes and workspaces. In these examples Tom wanted to reveal the “true habitat of the artist, and the workings of the creative life. Each space is exactly how I found it, and nothing has been ‘dressed’, or styled. Although I am constantly inspired by the way my artist friends have designed their homes, their workshops and studios can be just as revealing, with an air of unconscious ease that comes from practical use. Their function informs their beauty.”
Artists’ Homes by Tom Harford Thompson Live/Work Spaces for Modern Makers Synopsis: In Artists’ Homes, writer and photographer Tom Harford Thompson presents some thirty individual, eccentric houses and workspaces, from a music producer’s studio in Hackney to an eco-warrior’s treehouse on the Sussex Downs. His evocative photographs show how our live/work spaces, whether a tumbledown cottage, a country farmhouse or a reclaimed factory, are beautiful because of the lives we live in them. With work no longer separate from home life, we see how these artists function in the homes that inspire them, pursuing the life creative. Among the artists and craftspeople featured are Billy Childish, co-founder of the Stuckist art movement; Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher, founding members of Crass and creative partners who set up their home and studio as an ‘anarchist-pacifist open house’ (Dial House, in Essex); music producer Liam Watson of the famed London studio Toe Rag; vintage motorcycle dealer Ian Hatton, of cult shop Verralls; vintner Peter Hall of Breaky Bottom Vineyard, one of the first wineries in the UK; and many more. https://thamesandhudson.com/

Seashore Creative Review This is a superb reference book, full of detail about how to create embroidery, canvas and pulled fabric stitches. More traditional in approach, the stitches are illustrated very clearly; it’s amazing how many different stitches can be used. Beautiful examples of traditional embroidery are also included.
