Exploring the coast
One of the wonderful advantages of living in our country is that wherever you live, you are never very far from the sea. We have miles and miles of coastline. In researching for this article I found there is an interesting debate about how many miles exactly. The answer appears to depend on how you measure it and also the fact that the coastline is changing all the time. One of the fun activities that you could undertake, is to find a map and make a plan to visit as many coastal locations as possible. You could create an artwork, or scrapbook with photographs, or souvenirs as you track your journeys. One of the opportunities of this approach is to find places that you haven’t visited before, and also to explore places that are away from the traditional ‘hot spots’ of tourism. There are so many lesser known coastal villages, dotted around our coastline, and with our extended summers, the months of April, May, June, September and October are perfect for an out of season holiday, or weekend breaks.
As well as coastal villages, each location will offer different natural attractions, one of the joys of our beautiful coast is the variety of sand, shingle, pebbles, rocks, cliff formations, nature, birds, wildlife, even the water, from narrow inlets, or sheltered harbours to the roaring of the Atlantic waves. You may also like to walk one of the coastal paths, or nature trails, take particular care, as many of our cliff walks are changing because of erosion, or other acts of nature, there are also organized walks that you can join, some of which also raise money for charity. One of the most important things to do if you love the coast, is to take part in beach cleans, find details advertised locally, or through Surfers Against Sewage https://www.sas.org.uk/our-work/beach-cleans/ or through the Marine Conservation Society. https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/greatbritishbeachclean Visiting the coast has so many health benefits, don’t wait until the holiday season, take advantage of clearer roads, easier parking, and empty beaches to enjoy the coast all year round.

Discover your Inner Creative Here at Seashore Creative we love learning new skills, and we are not alone, turn on any television channel and you will soon discover people demonstrating their new found abilities; from sewing, upcycling, baking, painting, pottery to those programmes where people who have developed their skills are now professionally offering these crafts as a service. However there are many people who have not yet unlocked their creative talents. Taking time to be creative, is a wonderful way of relaxing, releasing you from the stresses of the day, it also uses different parts of your brain. More and more studies are showing the mental health benefits of engaging in creative activities. It is also something that you can do with others, as a family, with friends, or by joining classes, both here and abroad where you can combine a holiday with learning a new skill. As we have mentioned before it’s also so important to encourage the older generation to share their skills with their grandchildren. With a reduction in time given to learning creative crafts in schools, we are in real danger of young people losing the ability to create in even the most basic skills of knitting, crochet, sewing and traditional woodworking skills.
FEATURE
It’s not just at this elementary level, even long practised crafts are in danger of disappearing; The Heritage Crafts Association (HCA) https://heritagecrafts.org.uk recently published its Red List of Endangered Crafts. It makes absolutely fascinating reading, explaining what the craft entails, why the crafts are endangered, where it is currently practised and who is actively working in the craft, both professional or amateur/leisure makers. Do take a look, it may even inspire you to learn a new skill that could stop a craft from disappearing, or you could support others. In this issue we explore weaving, particularly using mini looms; what we love about using a mini-loom is that they are so easy to create at home with materials such as cardboard, pins, wood and nails, you can even re-purpose old picture frames. Once you have created your mini-loom you can create badges, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, even party garlands! This would also make a wonderful holiday craft activity for young people. We highly recommend the following book, not just as a source of inspiration and delightful designs, but also because of the very helpful advice and illustrations showing you how to create your mini-looms.

When was the last time you really relaxed? Enjoyed a moment when your shoulders weren’t hunched up to your ears, when you weren’t scrolling through social media, or busy compiling ‘to do’ lists, responding to requests from others, adding to your already long list of commitments? The reality is that for many of us, our days are full of interruptions, or deadlines imposed by us, or others. Social media doesn’t help as we gaze enviously at others having an imagined dream life. As the days are getting longer, why not use the extra hours of daylight to schedule more time to do the things that are really important in life. It is so easy at the end of a busy day to just slump into a chair and watch television, or go onto social media, or do both at the same time! Why not look radically at your week and try and create a ‘magic hour’ each day where you dedicate time to doing something just for you, something that will really make you feel better. Initially the first hour could be spent planning how you will find this hour each day. The reality may be that you find it easier to achieve this time if you build up to it; when you feel overwhelmed it is very hard to imagine achieving any space for yourself. Tiredness can also impact on our ability to be motivated to do anything different, as a first step try and regulate your sleeping patterns. Do everything you can to try and get the right amount of sleep, create bedtime routines to help you sleep, and awake naturally. If you are trying to create a more organised life, don’t start with big challenges, just starting with baby steps can pave the way to achieving a better quality of life. For naturally helpful people who are generous with their time, initially this can be challenging, don’t feel guilty if you are less available. Instead use the extra time that you find to also create unexpected happy moments of time for close friends and family.
A Simpler Life – How to create more free time
FEATURE There are a number of things you can do to start to doing things differently. 1. Have shorter conversations, this doesn’t mean missing out on conversations with the important people in your life; but we often waste a lot of time listening to people who just talk at us, or responding to people who use the classic, ‘Can I just have a moment of your time?’ Try and find ways of finishing these conversations quickly, or better still don’t allow them to start, always be polite, but not always available. 2. Encourage others to be more productive in the use of their time; this can be trickier, particularly if you are not in charge of the use of other’s time. There are so many examples of this in business, meetings that don’t start on time, that overrun, people who promise to call back and don’t, all creating a waste of time. This is where multi-tasking can help. Busy, but productive people use potentially dead time to achieve something else, while they are waiting for a meeting to start they catch up on emails, they use apps on their phone to plan, make lists, even to read something to relax them. They arrive at meetings exactly on time, and leave promptly. 3. Try to work smarter, this is an old adage, but still very true, it is so easy to struggle with out of date equipment, things that need repairing, paperwork that needs sorting, trying to find information that is filed somewhere. 4. Clear the clutter, linked to the point above, clutter can overwhelm us, and stop us achieving anything; creating a ‘magic hour’ isn’t about using this time to do chores. Instead it’s about achieving space and time to do the good things in life, but the more sorted and organised you become the easier it will be to find this time. 5. Creating order in all aspects of your life is important, and planning is an essential part of this. We’ve all experienced those nightmare days when you oversleep, can’t find your clothes, or the children’s homework, you’ve run out of milk, the queue for petrol is too long, or roadwork’s have arrived overnight, and you arrive at your desk, stressed and exhausted. If this is a one off bad day, we can cope, but if it is happening everyday, perhaps it really is time to make some radical changes! 6. Being prepared is a key part of being organised, and it’s often simple to put some basic actions in place, preparing everything the night before, although timeconsuming at the time, can make mornings much easier. Always shop with a list, but have back-up available, bread in the freezer, or other basics. In our cash-free lives, have money for children if they need it for bus-fare, school trips, lunches etc. Make sure you and they have emergency cash.
39
7. Shut yourself away when you want to achieve a task, set a time frame and try to stick to it. Use a timer if it helps, we can often work quicker when we get closer to a deadline, try and set yourself deadlines to achieve more in less time. This is especially important if you work from home, it is so easy to get distracted; however the bonus is you are more likely to be in control of your own time, and can schedule your work to the times of day when you feel most productive. Develop the habit of building in rewards, if I/we do this, we can then……. Plan something special at the end. 8. Don’t always be the one to volunteer, this is particularly difficult to achieve, if your natural instinct is to be helpful, you will soon find that you are the one who ends up doing more than you need to do, and eventually you will feel resentment. Still offer to help, but don’t always be the only one taking it on all the time, encourage others to help you, at home as well as elsewhere. 9. Be spontaneous, either in taking time out to do something that you really want to do, or by taking on a task that has been hanging over you. If you make a list of what you want to achieve in order to create more time for you, or your family, when you find yourself with some spare moments try and use it productively. You will be amazed whet you can achieve if you are motivated to do it, and there is huge satisfaction when you can tick it off your list. The key goal in doing anything is thinking if I do this, my life will be simpler and easier. Equally, take joy in breaking with routine and doing something unexpected.
One of our favourite books is: Gone for Lunch; 52 Things to Do in Your Lunch Break – Laura Archer
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ This delightful book is full of creative and imaginative activities that you can do instead of sitting at your desk. Depending on the timing of your working day, many of these activities can also be done after work, or even before your working day starts. 10. Try and encourage this approach with your family, it’s an important life skill for everyone to develop, particularly if you all want to share in the freedom and fun of more relaxing, happy times.
