Sport reports SAVING LIVES AT OGMORE
REST BAY VOLUNTARY PATROLS
Pen y Bont members have made the club proud in the past few weeks - two of our members, Amelie Clode and Tomi Turner, have recently performed difficult rescues in the river. Both incidents arose when club members were training and off duty. Despite this, both members put their skills into action and saved lives, displaying courage and talent. Most excitingly, with the lifting of the 5-mile rule and car parks reopening, Pen y Bont SLSC have now begun part time patrols at Ogmore by Sea. On the 4th July, the RNLI began full time patrols at Ogmore, but the club wants to support them by placing a small group of qualified members on patrol for an hour either side of high tide on weekends throughout the summer. Although training and competitions have been put on hold indefinitely, it is great that we are in some way able to maintain our status as a lifesaving club in these tough times. In the anticipation of high numbers returning to Ogmore by Sea, we want to help keep the beach as safe as possible, within the restrictions of COVID safety. Meriel Clode
PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS SWIM Whilst we are enjoying such beautiful weather I’m sure Christmas seems a long way away for you however, the Committee who organise the Porthcawl Christmas Swim are already hard at work! With Coronavirus and Social Distancing placing restrictions on our day to day lives, a large event like the Swim which attracts thousands of people will obviously need to be given a lot of thought. We are determined to be able to offer an event on Christmas Day and to continue with the long running tradition. Exactly what that event will look like however we are not yet sure. What we are sure of is that it will be fun, it will be safe and it will help us continue to raise lots of money for local charities. This summer Rest Bay Lifeguard Club are putting on voluntary lifeguard patrols at peak times outside of the RNLI service. We anticipate a very busy summer after months of lockdown, so want to be able to provide a safe environment to all our visitors. Already our patrols have assisted 10 people out of difficulty and given 100’s of others safety advice to keep them of danger. Our RWC has rescued a further 2 people who had got themselves into difficulty. We recommend that you always swim at a lifeguarded beach. This year Rest Bay, Sandy Bay (Coney), Trecco Bay, Ogmore and Whitmore Bay (Barry Island) have a lifeguard service from 10:00-18:00 every day. We are very proud of our club members coming together to put on extra lifeguard patrols and look forward to seeing you at Rest Bay this summer!
