FFYNNON WEN CELEBRATES JUBILEE
Queen and Prince Charles visited us on the day, which was a well-kept secret. Nia did glitter tattoos. Food, sweets, and drinks where available all day, along with a BBQ and buffet. The 3 eldest residents were delivered afternoon tea by our party price and Princess. When the equipment was removed we enjoyed karaoke old-fashioned carnival games finished by a firework display, making a spectacular end to a memorable day. The street came together offering help from putting up banners, bunting, cleaning kerbs, cooking and baking. S.A Holwell Friends of Ffynnon Wen With Sarah, Hayley, Nia Matthews & Julie Jones
A LETTER OF APPRECIATION Dear Editor, We created a group of Facebook asking for help to arrange a street party to celebrate The Queens Jubilee. A committee was formed in April 21. In agreement with residents we started collecting subs of £5 a month along with weekly raffles. Donations of duvet covers was cut and sewn into a mile of bunting. The Prince Kenfig, Maundy’s fish shop, Filco, Spa North Cornelly, and Cantonese Porthcawl donated to the day. White Well printers gave us two banners that framed the entrance to our street. Bunting was put up the week before. On the day of the event we had a small bouncy castle, an assault course, rodeo bull and all day disco. We hired a magic mirror; from this with the help of our community council we gave every child a framed picture of themselves on the day as a form of memorabilia. The
Dear Editor, Following a recent fall, which resulted in a broken hip, I would like to thank the following people. Firstly, the wonderful Paramedics who promptly attended my home. All the staff on Ward 9, Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, for their outstanding care throughout. To the lady from ‘Age Connect’ (formally known as Age Concern), who brought me safely home. I am also grateful for the after care provided by the District Nurses. And a thank you to my neighbours for the cards, flowers, chocolates & welsh cakes. I am making good progress with my recovery & will be nominating my husband Brian for “Housewife of the year!” Phillipa Lewis Waunlon, Porthcawl

The Reading Agency and Awen Libraries are excited to introduce Gadgeteers, Summer Reading Challenge 2022: a chance to discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around you, including some of your favourite things! Open to all children of primary school age, the challenge aims to support children’s reading for pleasure and prevent a dip in reading over the six-week break. As well as supporting literacy, reading is a fantastic way to promote mental wellbeing and have fun. We recommend reading six books, however we are happy for you to set your own target as long as it encourages the children to read consistently for six weeks or more! ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK They say fact is stranger than fiction? A great song came up on my timeline on a video/cartoon of a song called ‘Interstella Boy’ – a song about a young alien who comes down to earth for the day. It is by an artist called Dil Williams. However, when I tracked him down it was an old mate of mine, Will Williams from Porthcawl. I’ve known Will for years, in fact we ran the Spanish Marathon together in the late 80s, but I never even knew he played the guitar let alone write songs of this calibre! The song is off a 6-track C.D. he’s written, which includes the above single, plus ‘Patchouli Girl’, ‘Lines’, ‘Laburnum Way’, ‘Cobalt Blue’ and ‘Truman Show/Collective Dialogue’. The music is acoustic, chilled but very spacey with the hint of Pink Floyd, perhaps. He is joined on the album by guest musicians including Roger Clatworthy and top guitarist Mark Jones. It really is worth a listen and available on Spotify and Bandcamp. Will told me it was written while we were in lockdown. The Album is called ‘Interstella’ but the whole project is absolutely stellar! Finally, keep your music news coming in. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Picture: The cover of ‘Interstella’
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
When I decided to make a film about the Llandow Air Disaster of 1950, the first thing that was apparent to me was that the aircraft which crashed in the corner of a field in the village of Sigingstone was an Avro Tudor 5, and that only a few aircraft of this type had been built. Every one of them had been scrapped, so there was nothing in existence to show in the film. There was only one answer as far as I was concerned: I would make a 1/16th scale model of it, which would give a fuselage length of 6ft 7in and a wingspan of 7ft 6in. It would not need to be a flying model, because the special effects would be arranged by other methods, so weight would not be too much of a problem, although it should still be kept to a minimum, using balsa wood and thin model-making plywood for the main part of the structure. For realism, it will be covered in very thin aluminium 16 | seaside news

The photograph shows it in an early stage of construction – there will be more to say about it later in the year. POEMS GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN Your Majesty, I offer to you a memory Of two beautiful princesses, and four ordinary children, waving their flags, Pledging loyalty - Wishing you well. We enjoyed the glamour, but did not understand the price you paid, even then. Two little girls, waving their parents away as they sailed off to other lands.

FORSAKEN Who would live in a house like that? Where you can’t see out and you can’t see in. A prolific parasite, staking claim, Meandering tendrils covet and cling. In the blink of an eye, windows disappear, A cataract, impairing sight. The overgrowth of variegated leaves consume, Concealing and obscuring precious light.
Another memory now of you, the older sister, your faith in God, pledging your life, For you, serving God is to serve us too, his people ‘God save our gracious Queen!’ we pray.
Who would live in a house like that? Its facade, a twisted, tangled web of leaves, Sucking the life out from within. A living mask that darkens and deceives. Are secrets harboured in the shadows Now so many years have passed. Siblings gone, husbands, closer still, gone on before cast, Or memories ingrained in weathered But the One closest still, ever remains, stone? helping you still to fulfil your duties, Are sounds within from present times or for do we not continue to pray,’ Long live past, our noble Queen,’? Is somebody out there, is anyone home? May we too be faithful to pray for you with thankfulness. I can only watch while nature takes its Thank you, our Sovereign Queen. course, In this yet another year of Jubilee Degrading and distorting what remains. God save our gracious Queen. It needs someone to notice and to care. Yes, God save our Queen. Stone steps, cardboard walls, my shelter Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl yet again. If I were to knock, would I be welcomed in? THE FOURTH OF JULY Just the safety of those living walls .... sheer bliss. As the fireworks explode, I would return it to its former glory.... if We recall the day of independence, I could, The day when the Founding Fathers laid Given the chance, yes, I would live in a their road, house like this. Which ultimately led to the Red Coats’ Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend repentance. In defiance of the imperialist oppression, We dumped their tea into the harbour, We created a great commotion, Bringing cheers from John the tailor and Richard the barber. They taxed us on everything, Whether it be a simple deck of cards or an antique novel, We craved a Declaration of Independence, We determined to fight and not to grovel. Oh, how we’ll never forget the brave men, Those heroic troops who chased the Red Coats away, No other document will mark true liberty again, Though it still lives on in the hearts of freedom today. THE SOUND OF THE SURF Like a volley of cannon-fire, like thunder that rolls, Like a storm some miles distant that gradually grows, The surf rushes shoreward with a swift, sudden sigh, Then hurls itself forward from its height in the sky. With a boom as of cannon, with a crash like a sheet Of lighting in summer in a day thick with heat, The surf hits the shore with a surge of white spray, Then foams in swift eddies of pale green and grey. White waves impetuously rush ‘cross the sand,
Then scatter and flounder as they race to the land, With a long-drawn out sigh, the waves then withdraw, To return in a moment with a loud booming roar. The coast seems to echo as the waves hit the turf, For the sea’s voice is mighty, and its voice moves the earth, And the sound loud - resounding is the sound of the surf. Dafydd Matthews, North Cornelly
OUR FATHER You may not be a superman, but I don’t really care And though you comb it carefully, you just don’t have much hair You like to do the cooking at the barbecue But always burn the burgers so we call the fire crew Sometimes you’re a chauffeur driving here and there But when you get a bit annoyed you let that car horn blare You’re always cracking daft jokes, which makes you very happy Even though your jokes are old and really rather crappy You’re very good at politics, tell the MPs what to do But when it comes to DIY you can’t put in a screw You help me with my homework, but I think you really shouldn’t And when you spell the words all wrong, I really wish you wouldn’t But you never look for praise and you’re never one to boast You work hard for your family, the ones you love the most And even though your habits are old and rather faddy We really love you lots – Happy Birthday Dear Daddy! BEST BREAKFAST OPTIONS
fresh or frozen berries; - Fresh apple slices with peanut butter; - A breakfast sandwich or burrito with a whole grain English muffin or tortilla, eggs, cheese, avocado, and salsa. Additionally, challenge your habits by not limiting yourself to typical breakfast foods for your first meal of the day. Any combo of foods that provides protein, healthy fats (think avocado, olive oil, or the fat in foods like unprocessed meats, nuts, and seeds), and energy-providing carbs can be an excellent breakfast meal — even if it’s leftovers from a previous night’s dinner. CYCLING WITHOUT AGE Now that our charitable status has been verified, we can now pursue our fundraising aims to be able to purchase at least one Trishaw during the summer season. We have had good support from the local community and have a small but dedicated team currently putting plans in place to access that all important funding. As can be seen from the photograph, our local MS Sarah Murphy has lent her support, here with Steve McCreery who is the driving force behind the project in Porthcawl. We are shortly due to present to Porthcawl Town Council when we hope to secure their support for this worthwhile enterprise. The best breakfast options provide fast-acting energy while keeping you full until lunch. In other words, they should contain a balance of protein, fat, and complex, unrefined carbs — ideally from whole foods rather than highly processed ones. Here are some healthier breakfast options to try: - An omelet with spinach, potatoes, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese; - Whole grain toast with avocado and an egg; - Full fat plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of honey; - A sweet potato hash with ground pork, kale, and sage; - Banana pancakes, made by combining one mashed banana with two beaten eggs; - A fresh or frozen fruit and vegetable smoothie with a scoop of protein powder; - Half of a large whole grain bagel with cream cheese, smoked salmon, and spinach; 16 page.pdf 1 10/05/2022 - Overnight oats, made with oats, full fat Greek yogurt, and

NEWS WELSH GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO DISTRIBUTE QUEEN’S BOOK We have all just enjoyed the Platinum jubilee of the Queen. A special book commemorating her reign was commissioned by the UK Government to give to every schoolchild in the land. So I was shocked to hear that the Welsh Labour Government is refusing to distribute it to Welsh schools which now have to apply for it. In England, the Department of Education is sending it out automatically. Initially, Welsh Government asked that this book be published bilingually and this was agreed with 211,000 bi-lingual copies being printed. Can you imagine what an outcry there would have been if this request had been refused? So now another stumbling block has been put in the way of children reading this book. Has Labour now officially become a Republican and Nationalist party following its agreement with Plaid Cymru? Whether or not a child gets this book will depend on the inclination of the head and if the school has enough time to apply. I urge parents to ask their child’s school to apply for the book. A platinum jubilee is not like a number 11 bus – there will probably never be another one so this event is truly unique.
HELP WITH COST OF LIVING CRISIS The Cost of Living crisis is top of the political agenda, especially rising energy costs, and I am pleased that Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced further measures to help people. Readers may have missed details of the package, which includes: *£400 off the energy bills of every household *A £650 cash grant for people on Universal Credit and some other benefits which will be paid in two instalments *An additional £300 payment for pensioners who get the winter fuel allowance *A £450 additional payment for those receiving disability benefits. Householders are also getting £150 off their council tax. This package, which has a £15 billion price tag, far exceeds what Labour was proposing or what many organisations were calling for. It shows that this is a government which is doing its best to offset some of the worst effects of the cost of living crisis but no government of any persuasion can totally offset the staggering worldwide rise in fuel and energy prices. The truth is that Rishi has shot Labour’s fox by doing far more than they were demanding to help struggling families - leaving them with nothing new to say. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

COETY PRIMARY VISIT THE SENEDD It was wonderful to welcome Coety Primary School’s Student Council visit to the Senedd recently. Pupils and teachers were able to have a tour of the Senedd, view the Chamber where debates and questions to Ministers happen, and have a mock debate on a topic of their choice. The pupils spoke to me about issues they cared about, including making parks better for all children and keeping our community clean from litter. Having schools visit the Senedd is vital in demonstrating to pupils how the decisions that impact them and others across Wales are made. It is also incredibly important to show children of all ages that they can make a difference in our community and that their voices matter. I am pleased that the Senedd is once again able to offer school visits now pandemic restrictions have been lifted. I am keen to ensure that other schools and pupils are given this opportunity – it really is one of the best parts of my role. If you are a pupil, parent or school that wishes to attend the Senedd, please do not hesitate to contact my office. You can email me at: Sarah.murphy@senedd.Wales SARAH MURPHY MS Member of the Senedd for Bridgend
PUT SENEDD REFORM TO PUBLIC VOTE 1-in-5 on waiting lists in Wales, more than 10,000 people waiting more than 12 hours in A&E. Our education system failing children in Wales with PISA ranking Wales at the bottom of their league table out of the UK nations. A Tourism Tax on the horizon, penalising businesses after they have suffered tremendous losses over the last few years. The latest ONS statistics have shown Wales is the only UK nation that has seen its economy shrink. Failing to support the next generation of homeowners. But yet, here are Labour and Plaid Cymru discussing another constitutional concoction where they would rather spend up to £100m to increase the size of the Senedd, rather than on the priorities of the people of Wales. Why are we not surprised? If this Senedd, believes in devolution, it needs the consent of the people it serves to strengthen the case when changes of this significance are made. It must never be our place to tell the people of Wales what’s best for them. You should tell us that. You give us our mandate and we’d be fools to forget it. NEW £10.2M PRIMARY SCHOOL MOVES A STEP CLOSER Plans to provide the pupils of Mynydd Cynffig Primary with allnew premises have moved closer following public consultation. As part of the ongoing school modernisation programme, Bridgend County Borough Council wants to invest £10.2m into creating a state of the art new two-form entry school complete with a 75-place nursery. The new facility will provide local children with modern school premises instead of the split-site and high-quality modular classrooms that they currently use. We want it to produce zero or negative carbon emissions and for the design to benefit from a central ‘street’ which can be used for independent learning, dedicated group rooms, classrooms built for 21st Century teaching and learning, an all-weather sports pitch and more. The intention is to build the new school at the current site of Mynydd Cynffig in Pwllygath Street, Kenfig Hill, and for it to open its doors to pupils in September 2025. As the new school will need to incorporate land currently used by Pwllygath Allotments Association, the council has also agreed to provide a replacement site nearby with no loss in the number of plots. These ambitious projects symbolise our ongoing commitment towards delivering the best learning facilities possible for local children. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
GRIFFIN PARK’S FUTURE IS SAFE I want to thank everyone who took part in the recent consultation on the appropriation process for 20 hectares of land in the Sandy Bay and Griffin Park area as this forms an important part of Porthcawl’s regeneration. As two specific rumours emerged during the consultation, I’d like to address them both. Firstly, I can assure you there are no plans to build houses on Griffin Park – in fact, quite the opposite is true. Under the proposals, Griffin Park will double in size from four acres to eight acres, and will use land including the former Monster Park site to form a green corridor extending all the way down to the Sandy Bay shoreline. When the time is right, we will be asking what sort of new community-use facilities you would like to see included in the expanded park. Secondly, local tennis facilities are not being scrapped. While the plans entail relocating the current courts to a new spot, they also include providing new, modern all-weather tennis facilities, and we want to work closely alongside the tennis club to deliver this. Ultimately, both Griffin Park and Porthcawl’s tennis facilities will remain at the heart of the local community for future generations to enjoy. Following news that Rest Bay, Trecco Bay and Porthcawl Marina have all retained their prestigious Blue Flags, it is great to see RNLI lifeguards patrolling the local coastline once more. The lifeguards have returned to Rest Bay along with a new initiative which enables visitors to scan a QR code to receive up to date information and make their trip to the beach even safer. They already provide daily patrols at Coney Beach, Sandy Bay and Trecco Bay between 10am-6pm. These are jointly funded by Bridgend County Borough Council and Parkdean Resorts, with the RNLI covering additional costs through their national and local fundraising activities. Huge crowds are expected to visit the coast once more this summer, so it is good to know that the RLNI will be keeping a watchful eye. Even so, there are simple tips we can all follow to stay safe – such as swimming between the red and yellow flags, avoiding solo swimming, keeping children under supervision, and of course calling 999 or 112 in an emergency and asking for the coastguard. If you get into trouble, remember ‘Float to Live’. Lie on your back, relax, and resist the urge to panic – help is close at hand. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
We are really enjoying the summer term and have so much going on but only have room here to tell you about a couple of our latest events! We have loved being able to organise school trips, sports activities, concerts and a wider range of visitors to the school – things we used to take for granted now seem so special. We recently held a Welsh day to inspire children to use more Welsh in all aspects of their lives. The day started with a performance from the wonderful Porthcawl Male Voice Choir. The children participated in fun activities throughout the day and were finally treated to a concert by the hugely talented Bronwen Lewis. Year 6 had the privilege of working with another talented artist, Bethzienna (a songwriter, musician and finalist on The Voice). Bethzienna and college music students worked with the children to write a song about climate change. The children then had the honour of performing the song at the opening of the recent Bridgend College ‘Our Future’ Festival. Why not find out more about our school activities and listen to the song through our Facebook page? If you are looking for a new school, you are welcome to ring 01656 815660 to arrange a visit or email admin@porthcawlps.bridgend.cymru We still have a few full time Nursery spaces available for September 2022. St Clare’s Sixth Form provides an unrivalled educational experience – combining academic excellence with outstanding pastoral care and a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme, giving students the opportunity to reach their full potential, both academically and personally. It’s the perfect stepping-stone between school and university. St Clare’s has been in the top 5% of top-performing A-Level schools in the UK for ALPS (A-Level Performance System) since 2018, with results consistently well above the national average. Last summer 61.4% of grades were A*/A and 86.4% at A*/B, with 100% of students securing first-choice university destinations including many in the Russell Group. Our expectations are high and our students are disciplined enough to know they can work hard and have fun. Students study and socialise in the vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere of our state-of-the-art Sixth Form centre, the hub of our Sixth Form community. Students are also allocated a HP ProBook X360 solely for their use. Our commitment to offering individual attention, through small tutorial-style groups and specialised teaching delivered by experienced subject specialists and examiners, enables each student to reach their academic potential and feel happy and secure. Students uniquely benefit from six lessons of tuition per subject per week. Come and join us. Helen Hier, Head teacher Picture caption: St Clare’s Sixth Form Common Room

We began with some sad news as we said goodbye to our year elevens who were moving onto their next stage in their life. A party was held on the 14th June to wish them good luck for their future. As previously mentioned, we sold our tomato plants and the proceeds were used to buy food and toiletries for our local food bank. Our school also participated in an art exhibition at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where work from the students was shown. Our enrichment afternoons have been a success, with pupils enjoying different sports from Dallaglio, art with Mrs Roberts, where we learnt new skills such as embroidery and drama with Megan has been a blast. Finally, we are approaching the end of the school year, so enjoy the summer holidays and remember, “you have the right to relax and play”, according to Article 31 of our Rights Respecting Schools. See you in September! Cameron, Ellie. Hayden & Abby

It has been a very successful few weeks for our sports teams here at Bryntirion! Congratulations to both the Year 9 and Senior XI football teams for winning the Bridgend Schools Cup. This was a great way to finish the season, with so many of the Senior XI leaving school this year. This has been one of the most successful seasons for the Senior XI, who also reached the quarter final of the Welsh Schools Cup. We also have rugby successes with Chloe Gant, Year 11, representing the Ospreys U18 this season and Mya Dixon, Year 13, who represented Wales Women U18 in the Six Nations Festival in Edinburgh. Three Year 10 pupils, Rhys Anthony, Lewis Jones and Dom Hurley, have been selected for the Ospreys U16 training squad. Dom also represented Bridgend Schools U15 in the Welsh National Sevens in Llandovery. Lily Parkin, Year 11, is representing Wales in basketball and Logan Rodgers, Year 11, and Mason Rodgers, Year 10, represented Wales in boxing recently, winning bouts against Scotland. A huge congratulations to you all on your fantastic sporting achievements – we are incredibly proud of you and wish you lots of success! Mrs K Poole

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Well done to all our pupils who have experienced the first full set of examinations for three years! Pupils and staff have worked extremely hard in preparation and I hope that they are all rewarded with good results in August! Now exams are over, we are enjoying many of our favourite activities which are also returning fully for the first time since Covid. The curtain is about to go up on our school show ‘Legally Blonde’ at The Grand Pavilion (4-7 July), and a few tickets are still available on awenboxoffice.com/grand-pavilion and 01656 815995. After that we will have the Young Playwrights Festival which involves pupils from Year 7-10. KS3 pupils write and star in their own plays, which are directed by Year 10 Drama pupils and performed to parents in the Jubilee Theatre over 2 evenings. It has been fantastic to hold our transition programme again this year and engage wholeheartedly with the local primaries. On 30 June we enjoyed hosting around 200 pupils for the final event of the year, Transition Day, when Year 6 pupils from both in and out of catchment joined us for the day. We look forward to seeing you in September! Sports day and our tennis tournament will round off a busy term. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

ROTARY PORTHCAWL Residents in Care Homes had to contend with restrictions far more onerous than most of us during the Covid pandemic. Now that the situation is less severe, Rotary Porthcawl have been pleased to restart monthly Sunday Services at Porthcawl’s Picton Court and Monkstone House. With the generous assistance of local ministers and Rotarians, the services provide an opportunity of worship on a regular basis. Many residents may have attended places of worship over many years so welcome our visits and are always very appreciative. They enjoy singing the familiar hymns, listening to the speakers and interacting with Rotarians. Soon we intend to restart our bingo and sing-along sessions at these homes – another activity that is thoroughly enjoyed by the residents! Rtn. Laurence Chilcott

NCI REPORT
COLIN’S LIFE IN THE NAVY
It’s been fairly quiet for the Watchkeepers in the tower over the last month with only a few incidents involving our crew, Milford Haven Coastguard (MHCG) and the RNLI Lifeboat. We have given assistance not only by initially identifying some issues but also providing MHCG with a valuable camera link to the coastguards aiding them in deciding which assets to task to the incidents. Let’s hope the coming month is equally quiet around our coastline. If you are looking for a good book to read either on holiday or relaxing in the garden in the sun, look no further than in front of the NCI Watchtower most weekends, depending on the weather. Our watchkeeper, Jackie and her husband are usually there between 10am and 4pm selling a selection of fiction and nonfiction books to help keep the station operational. They have already done well this year and our thanks go to them for their dedication. With these light evenings and hopefully warmer weather on the horizon, if you are thinking of making use of our lovely beaches around Porthcawl, remember that the RNLI Lifeguards only work until 6pm. Always check the tides, be aware of the local currents and stay safe.
Colin joined up to become a marine engineer in the Royal Navy, leaving Boston to Plymouth to HMS RALEIGH. Because of Colin’s past experiences with car engines and seamanship, he scored high in various tests and exams and was soon promoted to Class Leader, gaining his first stripe on his uniform. He was then drafted to HMS NORFORK, D21 a brand-new County Class guided missile destroyer to its new base in Portsmouth. On completion of the sea trails, there was a commissioning ceremony where the duchess of NORFORK blessed the ship MCR. Following that NATO STANAFORLANT Sub Lieutenant HRH Prince Charles joined the ship in Gibraltar and stayed for almost a year. Earl Mountbatten came on board briefly, whilst on Board Prince Charles was given the news that his great Uncle, the abdicated King Edward had passed away in Paris. How many people can say they worked alongside Royalty and served their Country. Colin loved his time in the Royal Navy and left in August 1975 with an exemplary character rating; Colin also served his community in the Porthcawl Lions Club. TOOLS FOR AFRICA
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
Hello readers, it is time for a good sort out. We are looking for items for our Carpentry kits. Does anyone have the items in the photo? They are called Sash Clamp ends or Sash Cramp ends, they fit onto a length of wood, of any length, one either end to suit whatever needs clamping. Two sets of these go into every Carpentry kit so we get through quite a lot, the problem being they are not very common. So, please search your garage and workshop for any you can donate so we can continue sending complete carpentry kits to support projects in Africa. Other items in short supply are carpentry vices of all sizes, Record or Stanley smoothing and jackplanes. If you no longer use yours or have any tucked under the bench that you can donate we would be very pleased to hear from you. We appreciate the tools you donate - they make our job worthwhile. If it wasn’t for you we would be really bored. If you have any of these items or any carpentry tools please contact John on 01656 786367 David Cook Workshop Manager
‘Mighty revival’ – No doubt they would have been some of the words uttered by those who were in the revival that broke out in the Hebrides. The man that was involved was Duncan Campbell. In his own words he said ‘The Island of Lewis has been the scene of a very gracious movement of the Spirit. The breath of revival has been felt, and communities have been conscious of the mighty impact of God’. He also said, about the revival that ‘God seemed to everywhere’. The impact of God’s presence was awesome as He came and touched that community bringing joy and freedom everywhere. Oh, how I long for such a move of God in our community, where sin is purged and people experience God. When the revival broke out there people were awakened in the middle of the night by the joyous presence of God. The community came together at the church doors asking what was going on. Can you imagine God turning up in our communities and causing such a thing – I would love that Check the revival out on the internet. God is real!!! Neil Harvey

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD NEWS We had a lovely sunny afternoon for last months meeting and we’re glad to see that the tree we planted for the Queens Jubilee was thriving. We were shown the plaque that will be attached thanks to the Grove groundsman for all his work. Our luncheon club is back in action, always popular with members. Names were taken of members wishing to go to the Federation Tea in Margam Orangery in August. This was very enjoyable last time we went, pre-lockdown, so will prove popular. Our speaker was Ceri Joseph telling us about her day trip to Jerusalem. She had been on holiday in Cyprus and jumped at the chance to go. We were taken through her day with the help of slides and much information. Ceri conveyed the history and emotion of the place perfectly! Our meeting this month is on July 13th 2pm at the Grove Golf Club when the topic of Yvonne Rees, our speaker, is “My mother a cook, my father a butler”. Downtown Abbey maybe? Do come and find out. All welcome! Dorothy Thomas Tel: 01656 772157

HISTORY MEET MY ANCESTORS I’ve traced the Bassett branch of my family tree back to John Bassett who arrived in Glamorgan c1068 with Robert Fitzhamon (pictured), a kinsman of William the Conqueror. Fitzhamon appointed John his Vice Comes, which gave him the authority to hold courts in Cardiff Castle. Fitzhamon also gave John the lordship of St Hilary, the home base of the Howes of Glamorgan. Of the thirteen Bassetts who preceded my 13 x great grandfather Christopher Bassett, two caught my eye: Sir Elias and his son John. Born c1320, Sir Elias married Margaret, daughter of Sir John Delabeare, Lord of Weobley and Gower. During the 1300s, Sir Elias became an eminent lawyer and judge. His son John inherited the Gower estates. He married Lleicy, daughter of Sir Griffith ap Nicolas. John participated in a duel. He killed his opponent, and subsequently forfeited his lands to the Crown. In time, some of the Bassett lands were restored, but from this point on the male Bassetts married daughters of esquires, not daughters of knights. However, that didn’t prevent my 13 x great grandfather Christopher Bassett from becoming a leading figure in Vale of Glamorgan society in the 1500s. PYLE AND KENFIG GOLF CLUB OPENS
Although P&K GC had already began attracting members from the Newton Nottage Club, it officially opened on 29th July 1922. It had taken two months to establish the first nine holes. The clubhouse, which had utilised the framework from the previous club, and a second nine holes took another eleven months. The clubhouse (photo) opened on 24th March 1923. In 1923 the club, also, achieved its first memorable achievement when ‘Billa’ David and Phill Williams won the Victory Shield. It would take until 1998 for this to again be achieved. “Phoenix like, springing into life from the ashes of the old building, the new pavilion of the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club.” was officially opened. (Glamorgan Advertiser, 17th September 1926) Tragically, months earlier on 19th November 1925 the original clubhouse had been destroyed by fire. The club went from strength to strength; appointing a fulltime secretary in 1928 and compensation accrued through war work financed the current back nine. In 1970 despite financial difficulties the clubhouse was extended to what we see today, also now surrounded by a recognised championship course. The club has further fulfilled the Newton Nottage GC legacy with both men, women and juniors having competed at the highest level in golf. Here’s to another 100 years! Ceri Joseph

FINANCE DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE YOUR MONEY TO THE CHANCELLOR OR YOUR CHILDREN? If you have been carefully building up assets throughout your life you probably want to pass on as much of this as you can to your family when you die. If you don’t plan ahead the part of your estate that exceeds the Inheritance tax threshold could be taxed at a whopping 40% Meanwhile, inflation is set to reach a 40-year high. The value of estates is skyrocketing. Although there is no IHT between spouses. People already affected by IHT can expect to have a bigger liability to plan for. And many families who might think that IHT doesn’t affect people like them will be dragged into the net. Common Misconceptions- ‘Where there’s a Will there’s a way’It is important to have a valid will in place to ensure your assets are inherited as you wish but this does not protect against IHT. ISA’s are tax free- well they are in life but not on death! Your business maybe your biggest asset, but is it really free from IHT? Some more realistic options would be gifting your assets directly or make use of trusts - this will free them from IHT after a 7 year taper- with both of these options you have to be prepared to completely lose access to your wealth. These options can often be suitable solutions for our clients together with life assurance. But the younger you are the stronger your concerns may be about access and control of your wealth. With inflationary pressures it can be difficult to estimate how much of your capital you may need in years to come. How long will I live? What if my needs change? Will the cost-of-living further increase? Will I need to pay for care fees? You could choose to invest in a Business Property Relief (BPR) qualifying investment. That’s because BPR offers two significant advantages. Speed and access. There are several ways of mitigating this liability with different options for different situations – I would not advise you do this on your own, as it can get complex and costly if you get it wrong. That’s why you need to talk to me - the first hour is free! WHO LOOKS AFTER THINGS IF YOU CAN’T? One of the biggest nightmares regarding finances is the inability to deal with them when the unexpected happens. At the time of writing, just in the last week we have heard of three clients that have suffered a stroke. Thankfully, we had already helped two of them arrange to have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place in case this sort of problem ever occurred. With the other client, the event has already occurred and they will not be able to sort the issue if they are deemed to have lost the mental capacity to do so. Many married couples or longterm partners think that this will prevent issues occurring if one of them suffers the incapacity of a stroke or other serious illness. This is not strictly the case, since anything held in one name and not joint (like an ISA or other investment for example) will not be accessible to the unaffected partner, without the affected 36 | seaside news
partner’s express permission, via a Finance and Property Lasting Power of Attorney. Even a mortgage can be affected and if you’re looking to move house, with both names being on the deeds, one partner cannot act on behalf of the partner who has lost capacity. Usually, an application needs to be made to the Court of Protection for special dispensation to be granted and this can be both-time consuming and costly. It is therefore a crucial part of financial planning that partners and spouses particularly, take the step of ensuring that they get the matter sorted – leave it too late and that could cause a major headache. Call us and we can guide you in the right direction. On a different note, the property market still shows signs of house prices rising although this will slow down as people decide that moving in the current situation is perhaps not viable financially and they decide to stay put for now. A shortage of property choice will also play into this equation, since although this can force potential prices up in a buoyant market the supply still has to be there. Again as I write this, the Bank of England is again set to raise the base rate and some experts believe that it could reach two percent before the end of the year. That will push up mortgage rates, so call us now to lock in a new deal. 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 are the numbers you need. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545 / 07768 418308

LEGAL ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT PAYING CARE FEES IN THE FUTURE?
SHOULD YOU SIGN A PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT?
It can be a shock to many people (and their loved ones) when they realise the monthly costs of a residential care home, which can be very expensive and often in excess of £3000 per month. Whilst you may be eligible for financial help from your local authority or, in some circumstances, from the NHS, there is a detailed assessment which needs to be carried out before a determination is made. Many people do not qualify for this financial help and so the local authority will carry out a financial assessment otherwise known as a means test to ascertain your income and capital, which includes valuing all your assets such as your home, other properties, savings and investments. In Wales, if you have capital assets collectively valued at more than £50,000 then you will be expected to pay full care costs fees, which is known as self-funding. In England, this figure is just £23,250. Many people are forced to sell properties or investments to release capital to meet the monthly care costs. Therefore, it is only natural that people are looking at protecting their assets, especially if they wish to leave their family home to their children. Many people will also seek financial advice about their income and ensuring that their investments are achieving the best income for them, remember your income can be offset against the monthly care costs. People often overlook the impact paying monthly care costs might have on their spouse or partner who continues to live at home but who has, for many years, relied on their joint income with their spouse/partner. Whilst there are alternatives to going into a care home such as domiciliary care and having care at home, the threshold for capital in this type of arrangement is even lower. Some people believe that having a Will in place is all that is required from them, sadly, that is not always the case, there is much further planning that can take place to at least try to protect assets or place you in the best position to meet monthly care costs. This is why early planning is required for you, your partner and family. We strongly recommend that you speak to our Estates and Trust team to explore the best options available to you.
If you are about to marry or enter into a civil partnership, you may want to think about having a prenuptial agreement to address what should happen if your marriage comes to an end, especially if you already have wealth acquired before your relationship or might acquire during the marriage. While the idea of signing a prenuptial agreement before marriage may seem unromantic or even pessimistic, this is far from the truth. Even setting aside the high rate of divorce in the UK, prenuptial agreements are a sensible way of starting out a marriage with a shared sense of openness and honesty. Prenuptial agreements are particularly appropriate for people coming into a marriage with assets they want to protect, if they have family business interests, if the marriage is a second marriage, or for people likely to inherit or who are beneficiaries of trusts. Nuptial agreements are the best way of protecting assets in the event of divorce. An agreement will provide certainty of outcome in the event of divorce as opposed to the wide discretion that a judge will have. Judges will uphold agreements in nearly all cases where there is a pre or postnuptial agreement, provided certain conditions are met, including having had independent legal advice and so long as the outcome is not manifestly unfair. One benefit of the recently introduced no fault divorce law has been to reduce the acrimony of marital breakdown and prenuptial agreements can also help by avoiding unpleasant and costly financial proceedings. Taking the time to agree with your partner what should happen to assets in the event your marriage fails will reduce uncertainty and stress in your relationship and, should the worst happen, a prenuptial agreement can be an invaluable resource to fall back on in divorce negotiations.

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
July is generally the hottest month of the year so really it becomes the time to sit in your garden and enjoy! There’s always dead heading to do and watering is a daily chore to keep your plants from wilting, but remember to use grey water whenever possible. Keep on top of weeds and harvest your crops wherever appropriate, catch those courgettes before they turn into marrows! Laleston Gardening Club are holding a Members’ BBQ on the 16th, booking is essential. Our Ladies section meets on the 5th and 19th, the latter will be a social evening before we take our summer break. We now proudly display our National Lottery Community Fund Plaque to thank lottery players for making our grant possible. Our new windows are on order and will be fitted before the winter sets in. Our Jubilee Celebration tea was a great success, enjoyed by all. Don’t forget to take photos of those beautiful gardens and submit to the Club to be considered for inclusion in our calendar for 2023. Please think about your entries for our Annual Horticultural Show too - it won’t be long until we hold it on Saturday 10th September. Handicrafts, art, Baking classes as well as gorgeous vegetables and stunning blooms. The Schedules will be available shortly. Keep in touch through our Facebook page and message facility. Susan Ford
July, the hottest month of the year (as long as it doesn’t rain on the 15th St Swithin’s day!) They say Laziness is respectable this month, but not for you my fellow gardener, it’s time for the “feed, water, deadhead, hoe mantra, essential for a lovely garden this summer. Keep an eye out for pests such as lily beetles, aphids, vine weevil and snails remove them before they do harm. Its nice to chuck the snails over the field as they are very helpful for keeping the balance of the environment, they might have a little munch on your plants, but they won’t eat your lawn and clear up garden debris (plus they are rather cute) did you know if you see a slug climbing a tree its a sign of hot weather! Runner beans, don’t you love them! Add a handful of lime to your watering can this will help set the flowers and produce more pods, more beans -wonderful. Move your house plants outside for a little summer holiday, they’ll love it, especially orchids who need a spell outdoors to initiate flowering buds. “Your children and your garden both reflect the amount of weeding done during the growing season”. Chris Early
PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY We had great fun creating the floral displays for the Music and Flower Festival on Jubilee weekend. Later that week we had a speaker meeting who gave us an insight into working with the royal household and had many entertaining stories. In June our practice night taught us how to make a fancy floral table decoration. We also had a trip to Ross on Wye for the local NAFAS President’s day. This involved useful workshops and a superb demonstration by Kathryn Stangaard, chairman of the Flower Arranger magazine. Our July meeting is our AGM and this will be followed by a fish and chips supper. This concludes our programme and we meet again for enrolment in September. Please call 01656222985 or look at our Facebook page for more information. New members always welcome. Alison Thomas 40 | seaside news

VI WALK TO RUN GROUP BRIDGEND
TIDES
Just Run Penybont has set up a VI Walk to Run group at Newbridge Fields running track. It’s free of charge and organised by qualified guide runners; it was set up to offer anyone who is visually impaired the chance to get some fresh air and exercise within a safe and controlled environment. The running track is perfect; as it is flat, safe with no obstacles. Each VI participant is partnered with a sighted volunteer to safely guide them around the track. It is open to everyone of all ages and abilities whether you would like a casual walk or are looking to get back to running or exercise or just to meet new people. Many of the reoccurring participants have said how much their confidence has grown, as well as their fitness and energy levels. The group meets every Saturday 1pm at the running track at Newbridge fields. If you are interested, please contact Just Run Penybont on justrunpenybont@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/ VIWALKTORUNPENYBONT/ to view descripted photos and videos. Vickie Blake, Guide Runner
SURF REPORT - SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA In mid-June I enjoyed a day at Llantwit Col Huw Point and the Beach, where they were holding a Welsh Surfing Championships. The westerly wind was very strong indeed that Saturday with white horses sprinting up channel. The colour of the sea that day was a deep oceanic blue strewn with aqua green. Very Oceanic looking. Video filming was difficult due to the very high winds and the Point break was battered making the surfing conditions very rough and difficult with a lot of duck diving and white water to battle with. Our Local to Ogmore by Sea, Eli Perrins Davies, picked up a Trophy in Open Title for 3rd place while Logan Nicol won the event. Other events were won by Porthcawl bushy, bushy blonde surf star (blonde back in the day anyway) Gary Lewis. Mark Vaughan, Llantwit local, also picked up a trophy or two. Pembrokeshire surfer Joanne Dennison won the Womens Masters and in the Women’s Open Emily Williams took 2nd place. This event is a pleasure to watch where the local surf community and WSF make an effort to arrange a great two days for everyone to enjoy, watch and get involved in. DA Batten Tuskasurf.co.uk
