May is such a busy month in the garden, but for fear of frost I don’t plant my bedding plants out until the end of the month. You may have already started your tomatoes etc off in the greenhouse, during this month don’t forget to shade and on warm days ventilate. It’s good to water early or late in the day and damp down the floor of the greenhouse to keep up the humidity. Lawns should be cut once a week now and high nitrogen feed can be applied to green up for the summer. Soft wood cuttings can be taken from shrubs, hydrangeas etc at this time of year, an economic benefit, and free plants always very welcome. Laleston Gardening Club will be holding it’s main plant sale on Saturday 7th May, opening at 10am. In case anyone isn’t aware we are at Cliff Cottage in the centre of the village next door to St David’s Parish Church. There will be a lovely selection of bedding plants and vegetable plants at very competitive prices so do come along, but be early to get the best choice. It’s been lovely to have events at the Club back to normal, the Committee have been thrilled to see our members back enjoying lectures, lunches and making good use of our well stocked shop. “A beautiful garden in May is the very best that life can offer, it’s a bit like Christmas, everyday is a celebration!” (Monty Don) Weeds are in their element now! There is an old saying “one year’s weed is seven years seed” in other words seeds can go on germinating long after they are shed. Get your hoe out! Hoeing is not hard work; in fact it can be quite a pleasure (honest!). Hoeing also creates a sort of mulch; a layer of 2mm thick dries out trapping moisture in the soil, so doubly worth it! Plant up hanging baskets for glorious summer colour, shelter them until the danger of late frost has passed, then out they go! (better than her nextdoor’s I bet) It’s an idea to put few bits of broken plant pot in the bottom of your baskets to help drainage. When using supporting canes, put soft tops over the tips to prevent any eye injury, little yogurt pots are ideal! Plant out courgettes this month, they’re a bit like Marmite, you either love them of hate them! But did you know they are completely hypoallergenic, no one has ever been recorded as being allergic to courgettes! Chris Early
