LETTERS DISAPPOINTED Dear Editor, I took a walk across to Sandy and Trecco bay on the Sunday morning before the August bank holiday and I felt quite ashamed at the rubbish that was around the path ways outside the fun fair and stores, also as we walked back across Sandy bay the rubbish was also evident, with at least four discarded face masks left in the sand. Whilst I blame the people that throw away the rubbish I also blame the council as well, because these area could be swept and cleaned before the holiday maker arrive. I holiday in a resort in Spain every day the promenade is swept and washed prior to the tourist walking along them, also a tractor dragging a rake cleans the beach of rubbish everyday. Come on, let’s keep our lovely beaches clean. S.R Thomas, Porthcawl
CONFUSING CONTRASTS Dear Editor, There are very interesting contrasts in the articles submitted by local politicians in the August 2021 issue of Seaside News. Sarah Murphy, MS wrote that ‘no further regeneration plans for Porthcawl will be approved without a thorough public consultation’ - a very commendable approach providing that it’s the residents of Porthcawl who are consulted - those who will be most affected and with the most to lose. Why not allow a DEMOCRATIC vote by the people of Porthcawl alone on any future plans for ‘urban regeneration’? Tom Giffard correctly identifies that a Tourism Levy proposed by the Welsh Government for holidaying in Wales would be detrimental and drive potential visitors to other Welsh/ English tourist resorts. One could add that the ‘urbanisation/ regeneration that BCBC plan for Salt Lake, thereby removing all convenient parking would be equally detrimental to Porthcawl being a Day Trip/Short Term tourist attraction. Jamie Wallis MP clearly recognizes that losing the exceptional parking availability, which provides easy access to the town/ beach/seafront promenade and harbour would be ruinous for Porthcawl. Any proposal by BCBC that a Park and Ride system would be an acceptable alternative to parking at Salt Lake is ludicrous. His reasoning is logical and easily expandable. Mayor Hill presents confusing statements. Mayor Hill states that BCBC are ‘taking forward’ the Salt Lake/Sandy Bay schemes for shopping/housing but then implies that Porthcawl members could share concerns and aspirations for the town. Later statements strongly imply deals for housing have already been done. Mayor Hill is reluctant to use the term ‘Porthcawl regeneration’ but prefers ‘Porthcawl urbanisation’. Whichever term is used means turning Salt Lake into an urban jungle. Every residence could easily be a two-car household leading to residents only parking. Potential visitors will be driven into side streets to park - leading to more resident’s only parking! Mayor Hill suggests there could be a lack of ‘leisure provision’. Of course there will be a lack of access to leisure. BCBC plan to remove the very parking provisions that allow people to EASILY access the areas where visitors enjoy their leisure! A case of ‘cannot see the woods for the trees’! The Mayor seems pleased there will be a supermarket and housing but concerned there will be a lack of green space, leisure and tourism provision - BCBC and Porthcawl cannot have it both ways. 8 | seaside news
Having been introduced to the new Mayor Hill, plus two male colleagues earlier this year, next to a coffee booth on Porthcawl seafront, where a photo shoot took place, my husband and I were surprised to see three ‘chains of office’ being brought out for display. They were worn during the photo shoot. Of great concern were the conversations that followed relating to how valuable the chains were (inappropriate) and the possible need to increase home insurance policies should the chains be kept in a private residence. The three officers were in very close proximity to my husband and myself; we could not help over hearing the conversations. Of most concern was the conversation about how ‘this town is now going to be organized’. We heard nothing about any ‘consultations’ with residents or anyone else. Having been a visitor to Porthcawl for many years I once passed comment in this magazine about how poor a condition West Road was in compared to the other two main access roads. I have to say ‘well done’ to BCBC on resurfacing a large section of this road. It was long overdue and very welcome. Think long and hard before ruining this classic seaside resort by burying its precious and rare parking facilities. Lynne Hendra, Lake Road, Port Talbot.
RE: LACK OF FACE-TO-FACE PUBLIC EVENTS Dear Editor, In the last issue of Seaside News, Jamie Wallis MP criticised the lack of face-to-face public events held as part of the local development plan consultation, and dismissed the process as ‘a sham’. What he did not tell you was that the consultation was specifically designed to keep people safe from exposure to Covid-19, and that it drew record numbers of participants to become one of the most successful of its kind. Held over an extended period of two months instead of the statutory six weeks, the process was agreed in advance by both Welsh Government and full Council, which includes members of the MP’s own party.

Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk While previous LDP consultations could incorporate face-to-face events, the pandemic meant that such options could not be relied upon in case restrictions had to be re-imposed due to any significant rise in infection rates. In other words, we were not prepared to put people at risk, and we were not prepared to gamble on whether the events could go ahead or not. The need to find new ways of conducting the consultation because of the pandemic was recognised and approved by Welsh Government, and we used each and every opportunity to do so. As well as the extensive online and digital engagement that the MP has labelled a ‘sham’, this included providing printed copies at libraries and other public buildings, sending hard copies to people’s homes, offering one-to-one telephone conversations with planning officers, contacting every individual and organisation listed on the council’s consultation database, undertaking a full publicity campaign, commissioning specialist support from Planning Aid Wales, and much, much more. The result of all this was a much higher response rate, one that was achieved without putting residents at risk. I’d also like to remind readers that this is not the end of the LDP process. In the event that substantive changes or further periods of consultation are required, I can assure you that the council will do all that it can to help people have their say, and that we will always prioritise their health, safety and well-being when doing so. MURDER AT THE SEAVIEW HOTEL By Glenda Young This book really grabbed the attention of our staff. Featuring a seaside town and Elvis impersonators, we can’t help but wonder if the author has visited Porthcawl and drawn some inspiration from our town! Set in Scarborough, the book focuses on Helen Dexter, who following the death of her husband Tom, has assumed the role of Sole proprietor of the Seaview Hotel. There’s an offer from a hotel chain developer to consider, but also a booking from a group of 12 Elvis impersonators, a singing troupe called Twelvis. Tom loved Elvis, and for Helen, this is a sign that she should stay. But the series of mysterious events that follow suggests that the developer is not going to give up easily. Then, shortly after Twelvis arrive, one of the group disappears. His body is then found floating in a lake, with his blue suede shoes missing. Could the two be connected? With the reputation of the Seaview on the line, Helen isn’t going to wait for the murderer to strike again. With her trusty greyhound Suki by her side, she decides to find out more about her guests. Who wanted to make sure this Elvis never sang again? The first in a new cosy crime series from Glenda Young, this whodunnit is perfect for fans of Julia Chapman’s Dales Detective Agency, Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, Betty Rowlands and Helen Cox.

HOW LUCKY ARE YOU? One day a farmer went to the field and found out that his horse had run away. His neighbours said ‘Oh what bad luck!’ The next day the horse returned with two other horses and his neighbours said ‘Oh what good luck’. Then the farmer’s son was thrown from the horse and broke his leg. The friends and neighbours expressed their sympathy, ‘How unfortunate’. Soon after a war broke out in the country and sons and daughters were conscripted to fight, all except the farmer’s son with the broken leg. Then the farmer was told ‘What good luck’. Who decides what is fortunate or unfortunate? Is it you or your friends and family? Sometimes drinking the first cup of tea or coffee of the day our first words are ‘Mmmm that’s good’ 18 | seaside news
To make turmeric coffee, you simply add turmeric and other spices, if you like, to coffee to boost its health profile. Turmeric boasts curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant compound that gives this spice its color. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, pro-aging, and pain-relieving properties. Many proponents claim that turmeric’s mildly spiced flavour works particularly well with coffee. Homemade turmeric coffees range from exceedingly basic, stirring a bit of turmeric powder into black coffee to more involved recipes that can serve as a meal replacement. Common additions to turmeric coffee include: black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and coconut oil. The curcumin in turmeric can be difficult for your body to absorb. While the acidity from coffee may impede its absorption further, adding black pepper and a source of fat may optimize absorption. The possible health benefits may include pain relief, reduced inflammation and immune system support but higher quality studies in humans is still needed. NEW WELSH SCHOOL PLANNED FOR PORTHCAWL
£2.3M NEW RECYCLING CENTRE PREPARES TO OPEN
New plans are in the early stages of development that could see an all-new Welsh-medium seedling school established in the Porthcawl area. Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to submit an expression of interest on developing the facility as part of the next phase of the Welsh Government capital grant scheme for Welsh-medium education, and to explore options for adding the seedling school to existing plans that aim to create a new Welsh-medium childcare facility within Porthcawl. Basing the school and the childcare facilities at the same location makes perfect sense as it would deliver the most efficient use of any funding that could be provided for the scheme. It would also provide a natural progression for children attending the childcare provision through to the seedling school. The council has previously approved in principle the development of a one-form entry Welsh-medium school that would serve the Porthcawl area as part of our ongoing school modernisation programme. Together with our ongoing plans to provide an all-new modern primary school facility within the Cornelly area, it marks the latest development in education within this part of Bridgend County Borough, and I am looking forward to seeing the proposals develop further.
As I write this, final preparations are under way for the opening of the all-new community recycling centre at Village Farm Industrial Estate in Pyle. Drivers will be able to take advantage of a split-level design to choose whether they want to access parking bays and recycling skips at ground level, or to use bypass lanes and ramps leading to high-sided skips on an upper deck. With on-site queuing space for up to 72 vehicles, the enlarged facility can accommodate up to 24 vehicles at a time and includes facilities such as an all-weather canopy, flexible bollards to prevent accidental damage, on-site solar powered lighting, flat kerb-free parking bays to remove potential trip hazards, and much more. In addition to the new recycling and waste facility, a dedicated turning lane, new traffic lights and a safe crossing island have been installed at the junction between Heol Mostyn and the A48 in order to ease congestion and support the flow of traffic. Together, this represents a £2.3m investment into Village Farm Industrial Estate and the creation of an all-new facility that will help thousands of households to recycle even more of their waste – look out for details on its opening very soon.

ENHANCING LOCAL TRANSPORT LINKS I am pleased to confirm that the new park and ride facility planned for Pyle is still on the agenda and that thanks to Cardiff Capital City Deal funding, progress is moving fast on Porthcawl’s new Metro bus facility. The status of the park and ride has been updated and reclassed as a longer-term goal after difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic meant that it could not be delivered within the timescale of this phase. The funding is now being fully invested into the all-new Metro bus project, which is being developed at Salt Lake where it will link in with the wider regional Metro network. Plans for the new Metro bus facility at Salt Lake are currently in development and feature a modern canopy and shelter design, room for around four bus bays, capacity for accommodating electric vehicles, digital information boards and more. Public consultation on the project is planned for later in the year prior to the submission of a planning application, and the aim remains for both the Metro bus facility and a new park and ride at Pyle to ultimately interact together as part of a hugely enhanced overall service for the area. RNLI I’d like to dedicate this month’s column to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution here in Porthcawl. Our community is so lucky to have the dedicated team running Porthcawl’s Lifeboat. With a team of 30 volunteer crewmembers from Porthcawl, our coast is protected – ensuring that local people and tourists alike can enjoy the area safely. I was able to visit the lifeboat station and meet Ian Stroud and Phil Missen, to learn first-hand about their important work. With our long coastline they cover a really large area. Without them, tourists wouldn’t feel as confident visiting our coast, and local businesses wouldn’t get the benefit of them spending their money in Porthcawl. They work for our canine friends too, rescuing Ollie the springer spaniel after he was lost for more than three hours in the sea earlier this summer. And the team is entirely reliant on donations. If you are able to spare a few pounds, you can swipe your card outside their gift shop at the coast to quickly donate £3, or you can donate via their website porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk/crew If every visitor were to chip in a little, it would make a big difference to the team. PORTHCAWL POLICE PRESENCE ASSURED PORTHCAWL MAYOR NEWS THE future of Porthcawl police station has been unclear for some time and I was able to raise this in a meeting recently with local police chiefs. I met Chief Supt Stephen Jones and Chief Inspector Geraint White and stressed the need to retain a base for police operations within the town. They explained that many of the functions previously carried out at the police station have now been moved away, leaving police with a much larger building than they need. But I was assured that if the police station were closed down, alternative premises would be found within the town to accommodate the neighbourhood policing team. Both men said that they realised the need to keep this team within the town and ensure that officers will always be on hand to respond to incidents. Both have a strong belief in the value of having locally based officers and Chief Insp White said he had recently re-located a policing team for Pyle and Cornelly to the old police office in Pyle. They assured me that increased incidents of anti-social behaviour and drunkenness witnessed in recent months were being addressed.
It’s really wonderful to see increased footfall returning to Porthcawl as Covid 19 restrictions continue to be rolled back, shops, restaurants and pubs have re- opened and once again high visitor numbers are returning to enjoy what Porthcawl has to offer. More events are being arranged in the town and residents, families and visitors are enjoying taking part. Porthcawl Town Council’s Promoting Porthcawl Committee is also looking forward and working hard planning an ambitious 2021 Christmas celebration. The restrictions caused by the Covid Pandemic meant that it was not possible to have public events during last year so we are really keen to make a difference this year. We would encourage local organisations and residents of all ages to feed in their ideas to the Committee, (no later than 30th October). Please email your ideas or comments to the town clerk: kerry. grabham@bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR TRACY HILL Mayor of Porthcawl
JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend
GET ON THE BUS TO STAY CONNECTED AS Older People’s Champion at the Senedd, I am worried about new research, which shows that older people are still nervous about using public transport. It appears that elderly people are only making half the number of bus journeys that they did before the pandemic, which raises worries about them, becoming isolated. The pandemic has made people fearful about using buses and trains because of understandable worries about catching Covid. But there are also risks to people’s wellbeing from remaining isolated in their homes and cut off from social contact with friends and families. Research has also shown that for many people, taking a bus ride to the shops in their town is the only social interaction they get, so we must encourage them to get out and onto the buses again. People got the message from Welsh Government at the start of the pandemic about staying at home to keep safe and to only undertake necessary journeys. . But it’s time now for a new message and an awareness campaign from our government in Wales to reassure people that it is safe to use public transport again. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Welsh Conservative Regional MS for South Wales West
Deadline date for the November issue is: Friday 15th October SCRAPPING PYLE SCHEME IS BIG BLOW I was dismayed at the decision by the Cardiff Capital City Region to scrap plans for the park and ride at Pyle Railway Station. The scheme is now said to be undeliverable and it has been decided to redirect all funding to the proposed new bus terminus in Porthcawl. I find it incredible that a scheme, hailed two years ago as a flagship policy for the City Region in Bridgend, is now found to be unviable. I want to know what research was carried out before the announcement was made to make sure that it could actually happen. This decision will be a bitter disappointment for people living in Pyle and its catchment. Encouraging people to use public transport is key to all the transport policies within the region and an improved park and ride in Pyle was an essential part of the strategy. We need to know what will now happen in Pyle. I welcome the new bus station in Porthcawl, which is long overdue. But we have had few details about it so far and a public consultation should be held now to see what facilities local people would like to see there. TOM GIFFARD Welsh Conservative regional Senedd member for South Wales West

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
The emotional wellbeing of our pupils has been a huge priority to us at school with parents, carers and students experiencing pressure on their mental health like never before. Our students continue to amaze us with their resilience and adaptability, even during the most emotionally challenging circumstances. With the sharp focus on supporting our school community through these unprecedented times, we are absolutely delighted to share the news that we have been awarded the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools ‘School Mental Health Award’ – Silver Status. This is a nationally recognised award with a whole school focus on the mental health of pupils and staff, as well as an involvement with parents and carers and external agencies. In the process, PCS has committed to making mental health a strategic priority and to developing a positive culture that promotes mental wellbeing for everyone. Our new Year 7’s have settled really well and we have welcomed many out of catchment pupils into Year 12. Transition has begun already with Mrs Sloggett visiting our feeder schools and we look forward to Year 6 pupils visiting us later in the year. It’s been wonderful to see everyone again and to welcome so many new pupils from Nursery to Sixth Form. Although we appear to be on the journey away from the pandemic’s worst effects and look to the future with optimism, we are ready to move seamlessly back to our Remote Learning Programme at any point. Our GCSE and A-Level results were excellent and consistently well above the national average. St Clare’s is in the top 5% of top-performing A-Level schools in the UK since 2018. We are celebrating our Day nurseries UK Top 20 Nursery Award. Our fantastic mini woodland area within our eleven acres of beautiful grounds for Forest School is the perfect location for little ones to explore, have fun and learn. Forest School is a great addition to our Nursery Curriculum, which already includes weekly Spanish, PE and ballet. Extra-curricular trips, clubs and a gradual return to extracurricular sports fixtures give us a welcome sense of a return to normality. September 2022’s admissions window is now open, with a limited number of scholarships available for entry to Year 7 and Year 12. Don’t miss our October Open Morning. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS
FAREWELL AND ENJOY YOUR RETIREMENT On Friday September 24th, Nottage Primary said goodbye to the one and only Mrs Alison Missen as she retired after 33 years! During her time with us, Mrs Missen made a huge contribution not only to the Reception classes, where most of her career was spent, but to the wider school community. For much of her career she provided the school with an active link to the RNLI, especially when she served with the Porthcawl Coastguard. Many past pupils will have benefited from the beach safety assemblies she organised and all will have left Nottage with her sage advice ringing in their ears! She is also a font of local knowledge and again our pupils will all remember her interactive assemblies on the SS Samtampa which were enjoyed by pupils and staff alike. Mrs Missen will be greatly missed for so many reasons but perhaps most of all for the fun, inquisitiveness and creativity she shared with all her Nottage family, young and not-so-young! We are looking forward to hearing of her next adventures, maybe as one of her notorious assemblies when we are able to gather collectively again, but in the meantime we are sure you will join us in wishing Alison a long, happy and healthy retirement. From all of the Nottage family – diolch yn fawr iawn Mrs Missen a mwynhewch! 26 | seaside news
We have had a busy but exciting start to the new year. At the start of each term, we introduce our new topic with a C.O.O.L (Choose our own learning) day. On this day the pupils get to complete lots of fun and interactive activities as well as come up with ideas of what we can learn about over the next term. It is a great opportunity for the pupils to choose fun and engaging activities that are relevant to them. This term our topic is castles for our younger pupils and magic and potions for our older pupils. Pupils dressed up in a variety of costumes for their COOL days and we had wizards, knights, dragons, princesses as well as most of the cast of Harry Potter turn up to school! We also have some new additions to our Key Stage 2 playground. We now have three brand new pyramids as well as an outdoor play area. We are very grateful for the support from our parents who both funded and helped with the construction and already our pupils have enjoyed playing on the new equipment at breaktimes.

I’M SAILING ON LIFE’S OCEAN
SAMTAMPA DISASTER 1947
I’m sailing on life’s ocean, With no rudder to guide me through, The oars that helped me sail the seas, I lost so long ago, The seas of life can be cruel, But I’ve kept my head afloat, Just waiting for my Guardian Angel, To lift me to his boat, My story’s not a sad one, For I have learnt so much you see, And when my time is almost up, I know my Angel will rescue me. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend
Those three score years and fifteen more, A tragedy that rocked our shore. As seething seas, its course did hamper, And tossed, and lost - SS. Samtampa. Two boys had sounded the alarm, When milk run took them to Sker farm. As thrashed around - in a nightmare, Of thirty-nine, in deep despair. As they fought to keep afloat, A call went out to a life boat. Of eight brave men they couldn’t ask, More dedication to the task. So, from Mumbles to the ship, Those heroes made their final trip. In darkest time, they shone a light Beacon of hope, in blackest night. When I go running, past Pink Bay, I sometimes stop along the way. As on the rocks - upon the groundMemorial, to them, is found. The light goes on, despite the cost, As Mumbles finest men were lost. For those in peril on the sea, They risk their lives, for you, and me. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl
THE HAUNTED ROOM Who weeps when the wind is blowing? When the rain from the roof is flowing? Who weeps when the wind is sighing? When the sun in the West is dying? During the day, in the light of noon, I fling wide the door of the haunted room, And all is still – without a sound, There is no weary ghost around. Naught save a bed hung with tapestry, With scenes of some wild storm at sea. Who sighs when the rain is falling? Who fills the chamber with sad calling? Who lights the candle by the window pane, Then blows it out at break of day? Perhaps one night I should explore, The haunted room beyond the door, And see what ghost sighs at night, And weeps beside the candlelight. One night perhaps, when the moon is bright, But not for all the world this night. Dafydd Matthews, North Cornelly

THE FEAR OF THE LORD No, not a God afar are you But one who is always near, A God who’s aware of our deepest needs As well as each childish fear And you want us to find you in life’s fiercest storms To know you, not just alongside But entering into each circumstance As the God who is come to abide. Jesus, our Saviour and our Lord Great I AM, God of glory and grace Only you be our fear. Let us know you are near As we live in the light of your face. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

I’M KNIT GUILTY! I knit in our conservatory, knit while I watch TV. I knit them in our caravan, that’s home from home for me. I knit those stripy bobble hats, tasty apples too. I try a new one every year, this time an octopus or two. At last I pack and post them to those at Innocent. I’m sure that they will welcome the treasures that I’ve sent. On their tasty Smoothies these little hats they pop. So folk can pick and choose them while at their local shop. The money raised for Age UK works wonders for their cause So we put our hands together for some Innocent applause. Hurray! Judy Dee, Porthcawl

FEATURES HOW DOGS COMMUNICATE The greatest gift we can give our puppies, is to learn ‘dog’. They’re always giving us information about how they’re feeling, we really need to be able to understand them. There are approximately 16 body language signs displayed before a dog resorts to using their teeth. If these early signs are missed or misunderstood then they will, over time, learn to skip them and escalate. All body language is contextual and normally accompanied by other signs. An Anxious dog may display - A lip or nose lick when they haven’t just eaten, a wide yawn when they aren’t tired, flattened ears, a raised front paw, have sweaty paws, be pacing back and forth and show the whites of their eyes (called whale eye). Solution – This dog is not happy with whatever they’re experiencing at this time. Either remove the reason why or put some distance between them and the cause of their anxiety. If they come to you for comfort, then provide it. A Scared dog may display - a crouched tense body, lowered head, tail tucked tightly under their body, may be lying down with a raised paw, unable to take food, possibly urinating, maybe growling and have raised hackles (an involuntary action, much like goosebumps in humans, known as piloerection). A dog that is on their hind legs or lunging towards a stimulus and making a lot of noise could also be scared. Solution – This dog needs distance immediately, either remove them or the reason they’re scared. This dog may snap or bite at their lead or the person holding the lead or at the source of their fear. With this dog, we would work on building their confidence and desensitising them to their triggers. An Excited dog may display - pricked ears, tail held high which may be wagging quickly in a helicopter motion, offer a bow position, eyes focused on the source of excitement, mouth may be open and panting, body is poised ready to go, vocalising in a high pitch and may have the ‘Zoomies’ (running around like a complete hooligan!) Solution - This dog needs to calm down as over arousal may lead to inappropriate mouthing or rough play. If out on a walk, pop them back on their lead and do calm sniffing games. If at home, provide a tasty chew or a loaded Lickimat to calm them down. Julie Williams APDT IMDT South Wales Dog Training Academy

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES The clocks go back one hour at the end of October. This year British Summer Time ends on Sunday, 31st October. One way to remember to put the clock forward or back is the saying “Spring Forward, Fall Back”. Nowadays with the advances of electronics and technology many of our instruments and appliances do it for us without our help. This time of year the clock changes seems to make the nights darker earlier and can be a gloomy thing, so put your lights on to brighten up your outlook, and look forward to the bright and cheerful lights of Christmas coming soon. After all, Jesus is the light of the world. Time is a fascinating construct. We measure our time by our life on earth, by its circuit around the sun and its approximately 24hour axis spin. Days and years are longer on other planets. At present human beings seem to live at most 120 earth years. Yet the promise of Jesus is everlasting life in a new and eternal body for those who will put their trust in Him. (John 3:16) If you would like to know more about following the Lord Jesus Christ please contact us at faith@gilgal.co.uk. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church.

PORTHCAWL LIONS At last we are an active club again, meeting and doing things together to serve the community and raise (still small) sums for our local and international causes. After the success of ‘Porthcawl in bloom’ and our runs, we have had the twice weather-postponed but widely enjoyed Sandcastle Competition 14 entries with one of the winners shown. We moved on to a successful QuizDrive (car ‘Treasure Hunt’) with 13 cars discovering, or rediscovering local beauty spots and answering (or not) 30 odd (very) questions, and we are now planning a COFFEE MORNING on WED 20th OCT at the Grove Golf Club, in aid of Breast Cancer Now, and thinking ahead to our festive events - a probable fete, Santa’s Grotto, the Fun Run. This means we have returned to normal, in person, meetings and enjoying each other’s company again - all with that sense of community purpose which we hope will attract more new members (we have 2 prospectively) as we come out of lockdown and seeking new ways to spend our time and energies. FEATURES KENFIG NATURE RESERVE
While writing this I am thrilled to be listening to toddlers and budding ballerinas enjoying their tiny toes ballet activities in our Kenfig Suite, alongside observing in another part of the building a generation of people at the other end of the spectrum sharing their appreciation of the literary works George Bernard Shaw – Porthcawl U3A Literature Appreciation Group. It is really wonderful to see Kenfig Nature Reserve Centre fulfilling its potential as a post Covid community hub! On the 19th of September we enjoyed international “Talk like a Pirate Day” and on Saturday 2nd October we will be celebrating UK National Fungus Day with fungi displays, fungi forays and fungi treats (courtesy of The Hyde), then on Sunday 3rd October our first Farmers Market is being held between 10am and 2pm, big thanks to. Emma and Lisa,-@thehydeoutcoffee and @ double_trouble_coffee for their assistance with this. Christmas is also starting to become prominent feature in the Kenfig Nature Reserve Calendar- our Christmas Wreath Making Class is already sold out!! My recent Facebook request for help with provisions of slab stones was very quickly responded to and whilst Mr & Mrs Fish very kind gesture didn’t quite fit the bill (but huge thanks anyway) we were very fortunate when Mr Rob James and Mrs Jayne James came to our rescue, and we now have adequate provision to complete “Y Cuddfann” our outdoor seating area. Around the Reserve itself Chris our Warden was delighted to discover a Portland Moth (Actebia praecox) last spotted here in 1994. By the time of printing Sands for Life will have begun mowing over 20 slacks and Plant Life will have completed a well-attended Scything Course clearing grassland around the car park area. Our Trustees have been working hard constructing a “Bee Hotel” which will be installed very shortly, and so excuse the pun I am pleased to be able to report that there is a “Hive” of activity at Kenfig Nature Reserve at the moment. Don’t forget our on-line survey, we value your suggestions and comments! https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PC8HBKN

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE TOOLS FOR AFRICA TFSR has not been idle during the problems arising from Covid. As well as refurbishing tools for a number of kits in the workshop, more akin to an operating theatre, bearing in mind the need for self- distancing, masks, adequate hand sanitation etc. We have nine kits ready to go, Builders, Carpenters and Automechanics. All the kits going to our training partners in Africa. A Typical Kit is shown in this month’s photograph, with 91 tools in total for a Training Centre. Two of the crates also contain hand sewing machines and haberdashery kits. We are always thankful for the support we get and have recently received a number of hand sewing machines from Bridgend College for which we are very grateful. We have also sent a number of un-refurbished tools to TFSR Cymru destined for Tanzania, as well as supplying gardening tools to the Llanelli group for sale at the National Trust Property at Llandeilo. Be assured all our kits will be self- isolating when they arrive in Africa, let alone Llanelli. As you see TFSR here in Porthcawl has been busy during these problematic times and we shall continue to be so. Mark James Chairman
NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION As summer draws to a close, we look back on a busy season at Porthcawl. So far this year we have handled 54 incidents, averaging 3 incidents every 2 weeks. Unfortunately the pandemic has had a major effect on our fundraising capability and the large-scale events, such as the annual quiz and choral night, have had to be cancelled for the second year running. We now hope to run a choral event in March 2022. Nevertheless, we have managed to organise other fund raising activities including our acclaimed bookstall, which we operate regularly outside the tower. This has been very successful and thanks to the generosity of Porthcawl residents and visitors to the area, has given us a valuable revenue stream, which we need to keep us afloat. We must also thank the watchkeepers, their families and other well wishers who donate a wide selection of books and to the staff who man this stall on a regular basis throughout the Summer and whenever the weather allows. National Coastwatch Day was August 28th and during the August Bank Holiday we celebrated the anniversary of NCI, seeking to further promote the organisation and raise funds in the process. THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL
THE HYDE OUT - COFFEE & CAKE BAR IS 1 YEAR OLD!
We have a new President, venue and Inner Wheel year. Our first Club meeting in almost eighteen months was held on the first Tuesday afternoon of August at the Newton Institute. Not many of those attending had been to the venue before and President Gil had only been inside once and that was back when she was a new member of Ladies Circle. It was lovely to see people again and get back to a sort of normal. First, we held a business meeting, where we discussed items for collection for the many charities we support. Some are local and others are international. New items for collection are the foil/plastic tablet blister packs. Then we had a very welcome cup of tea and biscuits. A very different meeting to those of the past. We are looking forward to getting back together every month from now, so if anyone is interested in finding out more about the Inner Wheel please come along and meet us on the first Tuesday at 2pm you will be made most welcome. Liz Jones
PORTHCAWL BRIDGE CLUB Who would have thought that when we packed up on Saturday 14th March 2020 that it would be 18 months before we started back with face-to-face (F2F) bridge. Yes, we have started back at Awel y Mor on Wednesdays at 6:45pm and Saturdays at 3:00pm. It was really lovely to see each other again after such a long time. Many of us had been playing online through lockdown so it seemed quite strange to actually hold cards in our hands! Two people I must thank for getting us on board with online bridge are Chris Rawlings and Tony Haworth. Both of them spent time with individuals, talking them through downloading software, registering the program and then the play in general. Some of our players are in their 80s and 90s. Two I know of - an 88yr old and a 90yr old bought laptops especially to play online! When we play online, there is a chat box at the bottom of the screen, so members have been able to keep in touch throughout the lockdown. It has been a saving grace for many of us. We welcome new members of course. Anyone wishing to learn bridge please contact us via our website: www.bridgewebs.com/porthcawl Janet Richards
NEWTON WI On Wednesday the 1st. September we held our first full WI meeting in eighteen months. Our President extended a heart felt welcome to everyone. We have kept in touch in various ways, but it was great to be together again, although of course, observing covid rules. We celebrated in party mood with a buffet followed by 60s and 70s music supplied by our evenings DJ, Brian Morris. Quite a few of our Ladies are unwell at the moment, we wish them all a speedy recovery and hope to see them soon. We were pleased to welcome four new members and look forward to seeing them in future meetings. Thanks to President Jennifer and Committee for all their hard work in helping to ensure the evenings success. We next meet on October 6th at 7pm. M Freeman
We are currently pitched at Kenfig Nature Reserve till the end of the year and will be celebrating our first birthday in October! A whole year of delicious coffee and cake! Who would have thought it! For you who don’t know us, we are a converted horsebox selling coffee, cake and a small selection of freshly made rolls, using all local produce using small businesses around our area. Coffee is locally roasted in Kenfig Hill; Milk is from Ty Tanglwyst farm and several local bakers, baking the most amazing cakes and cookies we’ve ever seen. We are so very grateful for all your support in our first year, through lock down after lock down and then throughout the summer. I left a job I dearly loved to start my own business in my own village and I am blown away by the response, so a massive thank you to my loyal customers. We have also had an idea of using this wonderful area to give something else back to the community; we are holding a Farmers Market at the reserve starting the 3rd October. Then 1st Sunday of every month going forward. Proceeds of the hiring of the stalls, go back to the reserve, which will no doubt help with the up keep of the area. All traders are small businesses that have had a tough 18 months, so now restrictions for outdoor events have changed we couldn’t wait to get this started. We are very excited! We feel like the market is just an expansion of the horsebox. As we support so many small businesses, now the market will support so many more, all in one area. Really fantastic news for everyone! While we are unsure of The Hyde Out’s future at the reserve, as there’s a plan for a café, we thought we would try and spread our horsebox wings. So, if you are a local business and we complement your business and you have room for a horsebox, Let us know. As well as our Farmers Market, which will hopefully keep us busy, we want you to know also we are available for private parties, weddings and events. This is a very exciting time for us as we move on to our 2nd year of trading, cant wait to keep sharing our progress with you. Thank you again. Your support means the world to us. FEATURES A VOICE FOR THE FUTURE PORTHCAWL Last month was very exciting for AVFTFP as after 4 months of weekly meetings we finally got to review the architectural plans as per our discussions. And they didn’t fail to excite and capture our imaginations; with vast green spaces for all ages; agile working units for those WFH and wanting social interaction; units for new emerging businesses that would bring more diversity to the town. In addition, a pump-track to attract toddlers to teens (and older!), outdoor amphitheatre, interactive splash park and vast recreational space. And perhaps, most exciting, is a bridge connecting Salt Lake, with its new amenities, to the town, and creating a circular loop that benefits all traders. Of course, this is only speculative and simply produced to start a conversation about what WE, as Porthcawl residents, want for OUR town. We are proposing plans to stimulate some conversation around Salt Lake and ensure that, when the time comes for AVFTFP and the general public to have their placemaking meetings, we have all given it some consideration and mapped out some of the more aspirational options that would benefit the community and businesses. Swansea’s new commitment to create a vast coastal park, as set out by Robert Francis-Davies, gives us in Porthcawl much hope. Over the next month we will be reaching out to established groups within Porthcawl to get their thoughts on these plans and continue the conversation so we can meaningfully contribute to the discussions with BCBC. We hope to share these initial drawings on our media platforms before the end of October. Please contact us on avoiceforthefutureporthcawl@ gmail.com if you want to become more involved and have your say.
TRINITY CHURCH Services at Trinity have now nearly returned to our pre Covid format. We no longer have a restriction on numbers attending and can sit where we choose. We still wear masks and are attending to all the recommended safety practices but are able to sing with live music. At the time of writing we are looking forward to our Harvest Service and hope to be able to hold proper Advent and Christmas celebrations in due course. Some activities have resumed in the hall and we hope that Messy Church will re start eventually. Please check our website for details of groups meeting. We continue to hold a live Zoom service for those who prefer to join from home. Recordings via email or CD are also available. The Trinity Bargain Store now has its own Facebook page with information on opening hours and special items for sale. It currently operates every day from 10 to 1pm except Fridays and Sundays, weather permitting. All proceeds are in aid of Action for Children and Trinity. GREAT GLOBAL GREYHOUND WALK
The Great Global Greyhound Walk is a FREE to attend annual dog-walking event that brings together greyhounds, lurchers, other sighthounds and their owners to raise awareness of the breeds and show the public just what wonderful pets they make. www.greatglobalgreyhoundwalk.co.uk The first ever Great Global Greyhound Walk at Newton Beach was held today, Sunday 19th September, for a walk along our beautiful beach. It started in a light drizzle but concluded in glorious autumn sunshine. There were a fantastic group of 22 greyhounds, sighthounds, and companion dogs attended and showed what wonderfully loving, social and gorgeous dogs these are as pets. Many here today had been given their forever homes from rescue organisations, including Greyhound Rescue Wales and Forever Hounds Trust, some were racing dogs in a previous life, but all are gentle, with amazing personalities. It was an absolute pleasure to meet so many ambassadors for the breed, and hope to make this an annual event. Thank you so much to everyone who came to join in the walk. Sue Emlyn-Jones
MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI 14th September and here we are again Mynydd Cynffig WI meeting in the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill 2pm to 4pm. We had a good turnout of members, lots of talk and laughter WI business discussed and the trips, walks and educational tours the Glamorgan Federation has arranged for us to participate in. Our luncheon club enjoyed last months get together and we’ve arranged this months for our members. Our walking club has arranged our October walk and as soon as we can, our scrabble club will be up and running. We had a talk and demonstration by Pat Summers on weaving with lavender, and enjoyed by all. Next month one of our ladies is giving us a demonstration on making Christmas wreaths so we’ll have no excuse not to get our decorations ready for Christmas. This year is rushing by and we’re all hoping that next year will be better one. We’re all pulling together keeping each other connected and trying to make sure we’ll get through this pandemic and come out on the other side The WI is a great way for us to keep in touch with each other in our community and with other WI’s come and join us tea and biscuits always at the ready. HISTORY SS MALLENY On the 15th October 1886, an iron sailing ship loaded with coal perished on Tusker Rock. The ‘Malleny’ was on route from Cardiff to Rio de Janeiro when she encountered a fierce storm and a damaged rudder resulted in her drifting helplessly along the coast. The storm was so fierce that it proved impossible to launch ‘Chafyn Grove’ - the Porthcawl lifeboat. Malleny’s crew of twenty, were drowned. Despicably, the heartless landlord of the ‘Greyhound Inn’ in St Brides Major, collected four corpses from the shore and displayed them to the curious and ignorant at 3d a time. They were later buried in Macross graveyard. His wife who accompanied his body to Bangor for burial identified Captain Hugh Richards’ body. The RNLI held an enquiry into the reported failure to launch the lifeboat. The outcome resulted in local secretary Rev. W Jones of Newton Nottage receiving a letter exonerating Porthcawl Lifeboat of any blame. “Wise discretion was shown in not permitting the crew to expose themselves to almost certain death.” (South Wales Echo 11th November 1886.) The remains of the ship could be seen until 1979, when they were blown up by the military because of the difficulties caused to small vessels using Newton Bay. Ceri Joseph
COITY CASTLE
Coity, the largest and most dramatic of our three local Norman castles is, at present, undergoing a major renovation programme managed and funded by Cadw. Although closed to the public, the Society was invited to view the work in progress. Even though the castle is a ruin, the process of repairing such a historic building is long and complex. Cadw’s archeologist set out the context – an earth and timber fortress gradually upgraded to stone by around 1180, sieged, unsuccessfully by Owain Glyndwr in 1404/5, added to through the centuries reaching its highpoint under Barbara Gamage and 36 | seaside news

The project manager explained the huge number of research and consultation steps that had to be followed to ensure that the fabric of the ancient structure, a grade 1 listed building, was respected and protected. Then the contractor’s site manager handed out hard hats and hi-vis vests and took us up the scaffolding to see the detailed work and get a bird’s eye view of the site and the surrounding landscape. We were told that similar fascinating visits might be available to Cadw members. Ian Price Bridgend & District Local History Society
MEET MY ANCESTORS
My 4 x great grandfather, Richard Morgan, was baptised on 2 December 1792 in Llantrisant. The ninth of twelve children born to James Morgan and Hannah David, Richard established himself as an ostler tending the horses at Pyle Coaching Inn. At the relatively advanced age of 43, Richard married Margaret Jones in St James’ Church, Pyle. Born in 1811 Margaret hailed from Pyle, a rural village that contained the main highway in Glamorgan. Richard and Margaret produced five children: Catherine, Thomas, Mary Ann, Richard and my direct ancestor, Hannah. With employment in a job that he clearly loved along with the green pastures and open spaces of Cefn Cribwr, life must have been good. Then, in the late 1840s, the railways arrived. The railways took passenger and commercial trade away from the horse carriages and Richard lost his job at Pyle Coaching Inn. However, the family adapted. Richard became a colt breaker then a horse keeper. With his love and knowledge of horses, he worked with the animals for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, Margaret established her own ‘Inn’ boarding navigators who had travelled from Ireland to help construct the railways. FINANCE WHAT WAS THE BEST INVESTMENT OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS? People often ask what’s the best place to invest just now. There’s never a correct answer to this unless we know a person’s time horizon or attitude to risk. If someone was a balanced investor and had ten years to invest there are several options, but none are correct all the way through. Let me explain to you why. Some UK investment funds have gone up by over 30% in the last year, but they fell by the same amount the year before so it largely depends when you went in and when you came out. If you came out at the wrong time because the markets spooked you then you would have lost money. Some clients like the thought of Emerging Markets or Gold or Crypto Currency as their Xanadu. Sadly, this will invariably fail because the trick is to spread your investments and diversify. Whilst either of the latter could go up by 100% over one year and make your pulse race, equally they could fall by 50% the next year and make you as sick as that proverbial parrot! Some of the better Global investment funds have gone up by over 500% in the last ten years and by allowing the fund manager to spread their purchases between the likes of Amazon, Apple, Tesla or Netflix you’re letting them do the hard work for you. It’s impossible for an amateur investor to beat the star rated managers as they have a raft of staff to carry out all the necessary research and you don’t. Some people opt for esoteric investments as they like being in control. Whisky might have been a good investment over the

last few years and so would classic cars or even personalised number plates and now even antique clothes are in fashion. You could always drown your sorrows sitting in your Frog Eyed Sprite wearing your Grayson Perry frock if the markets collapse all around you! If you don’t understand an investment just don’t buy it. Charlotte Church was allegedly offered Bitcoin to pay for one of her gigs some years back and she opted for the cash instead, oops! That might be worth a million now, but she was probably wise to take the money as hindsight makes monkeys of us all. Generally speaking, to make money you need to hold your nerve or just don’t read your investment statements and let your advisor decide your investment planning, that’s what we’re there for. WHAT A NIGHTMARE SCENARIO… At the time of writing, I have just been watching the TV over breakfast; something I recorded a long while back, dealing with the lack of life assurance protection in the UK. Despite having possibly the most mature, competitive and established life assurance market in the World, still way too many UK adults, many of them with Families who depend on them entirely, pay any or too little attention to the protection needs of their Family. Every day we see cases of people who left home for work in the morning yet never returned home in the evening, because something awful has befallen them during the day. One case highlighted in the recorded programme truly was a nightmare scenario and demonstrates how we need to get our priorities right. A young father left home for work, his young wife feeding their new baby and the neighbour collecting their 6 year old to walk to school as company for the neighbour’s daughter – Families and neighbours do this every day. When the father was around 3 miles from work, a sudden downpour of rain turned driving conditions hazardous, the previously dry road becoming greasy. As he approached a sharp bend, his mind turned to horror as a delivery van skidded in the wet conditions, across the road and into a head-on collision with the father’s car. In just a few seconds the lives of two people, possibly many more, had been turned completely upside down and would never be the same again. A complete accident of course, on just
another working day. The twist in this account of what happened comes as a devastating irony. As the emergency services dealt with the situation and looked for clues as to the identities of the dead, the young father’s bag had spilled out his diary in the collision: a note written on paper stuck out from the diary and on it were written the words, ‘ Remember to call Steve the Financial Adviser to arrange the life assurance.... wife, children, mortgage, income, etc – BUT sadly, all too late. So, read this, digest this, picture your Family in your mind and get it sorted, not tomorrow, today.

LEGAL PROPERTY OWNERSHIP AND TAX PLANNING
AFTER THE PANDEMIC For many, living through a global pandemic and being fortunate enough to come out the other side has made them re-evaluate their life, their life style and their aims/objectives for the future. Many people have been left feeling they wish to divorce or separate from their spouse/partner but are unsure where to turn before taking any action. Many wish to ensure they are financially stable and protected in the future. Many people have been left with the urge to plan their future by making sure their Will is up to date leaving their estate to their desired beneficiaries, by considering who can and will assist them if they suddenly became unwell or lose capacity to make their own decisions. Many wish to plan their care needs and express their preferences and many have turned their minds to inheritance tax planning. Sadly, many people may have suffered loss during the pandemic and require guidance and assistance in dealing with their loves one’s affairs. It is always advisable to seek legal advice to explore your options, gain professional advice and guidance on these complex issues. You can access legal advice with us in various ways such as via telephone conference, video conference or traditional face to face meetings, arrangements can be made according to your preference and safety measures taken according to Covid-19 guidelines. Your solicitor will explain the processes and the pro’s and con’s of any decisions you intend making. Your solicitors can draft documents which best meets your needs now and in the future. It may also be beneficial to understand what other agencies and organisations are available to assist you and your family. Should you wish to discuss any of these issues further please contact us.
There are many factors to consider when deciding how best to leave property on death and this should be explored as part of a wider discussion about tax and estate planning as a whole. Jointly owned properties are held in one of two ways, the first being as joint tenants, which means that on the death of the first joint tenant, the property will pass automatically to the surviving joint tenant, regardless of the terms of any will or the intestacy rules. This transfer will be exempt from Inheritance Tax as the spousal exemption will apply. It will also pass without the need for a Grant of Probate. The second way is as tenants in common, when both parties own a distinct “share” in the property – this can be 50-50 or any other split, which would usually be recorded in a Declaration of Trust. On the death of the first tenant in common, his or her share in the property will pass in accordance with his or her will or intestacy. A property held as tenants in common may, of course, still pass to the surviving spouse on the first death, if the deceased spouse left his or her share of the property to the surviving spouse in his or her will, in which case spousal exemption would still apply. Alternatively, a trust can be set up for the benefit of the surviving spouse for the rest of his or her lifetime, allowing that spouse to live in the property but not own the deceased’s share of it. There may be many potential benefits of doing this such reducing the Inheritance Tax liability on the spouse’s death, to claim the residence nil rate band and to provide certainty as to where the share passes after the surviving spouse’s death.

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
I was invited to the National TV Awards last month but declined to go. I don’t like red carpets, and was afraid I’d bump into Ant n’ Dec! They won the award as always, but I’ve never been a fan. I find them as amusing as rabies in a guide dog home. Plenty going on music-wise however. The Stereophonics will be playing at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday 18th December 2021, with a very special guest – Tom Jones. The ‘Phonics will be promoting their forthcoming new album called Oochya and a full tour next year. Another one for your notebook is the In It Together Festival that takes place at Newlands Farm, Margam over three days from 3rd to 5th June 2022. It will have a capacity for 40,000 punters with six stages with various music styles as well as comedy, circus acts and much, much more. As yet, no major acts have been announced but I’ll keep you all up to speed. At £49 for a weekend ticket it sounds good to me. Finally, well done to Kenfig Hill rockstar Jayce Lewis who’s got the support spot on Gary Numan’s European Tour next year. Keep your music news coming. Almost back to normal! Following the latest guidelines, we’re able to rehearse indoors again. However, careful consideration of the health and welfare of all members of the choir meant we have had to carry out an exhaustive risk assessment and put several measures in place. An enthusiastic choir returned to the first indoor rehearsal on the 17th of August. It was great to see everyone again and the biggest concern was whether the uniforms would still fit!!! With a number of weddings to look forward to the choir will have to work hard to getting singing fit again. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons we had to cancel this year’s annual concert. We’re currently looking into how we can entertain our wonderful supporters again. Watch this space for further news. With the festive season fast approaching the choir will soon have to start polishing the seasonal repertoire and are looking forward to much enjoyed carol services. We are always looking to welcome now choristers. If you’re interested, please contact us on contact@pothcawlmalechoir. co.uk or Noel Williams on 07902 333559.
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I am going to share a few thoughts this month on the subject of film music, but where does one begin? My own favourite composer is John Barry, best known for his James Bond themes of the 1960s and so many other films of that era, such as “Born Free”, “The Quiller Memorandum”, “The Lion in Winter”, “Mary, Queen of Scots”, and, perhaps the most sublime of all, the music for the Sunsilk shampoo television advertisement – yes, for an advert! The wonderful thing is that so many of these pieces of music, in many ways lost in the mists of time, can be enjoyed on YouTube and for older readers of Seaside News it will bring back memories of childhood viewing. By comparison, I’m afraid many contemporary composers don’t do a great deal for me, and there is a tendency now to use electronic synthesisers instead of full orchestras, undoubtedly to save on cost. It’s hard to put a finger on what’s missing, but if you listen to Bernard Herrmann’s music for “Vertigo”, or Dimitri Tiomkin’s score for “The Fall of the Roman Empire”, you will know what I mean. Apologies, of course, to the many fine composers not named. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir 42 | seaside news

GARDENING LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
October and the nights are really drawing in, leaves begin to fall, chilly nights are a sign of things to come. It’s time to prepare the greenhouse for winter, protect and insulate with bubble wraps and fleece to keep those tender plants safe during the winter months. Time to plant those bulbs and prepare your beds for spring displays. Look after lawns, rake and keep those leaves under control. The final cut of the lawn is usually around the end of October and best not to cut too low. Garlic can be planted, as can prepared hyacinths for indoor colour and perfume. Laleston Gardening Club had a very successful two-day Festival to celebrate our 50th Anniversary in September; we would like to thank all those that supported us we are extremely grateful, it is very much appreciated. We will hold our AGM on Friday 8th October at 7.30pm. We hope to announce further activities soon. Susan Ford
PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY At the time of writing we are eagerly anticipating our enrolment night and first flower demonstration, which is to be held on October 6th at Trinity Church at 7.30 We hope to see many of our members joining us again and to welcome new members. After such a long time we are all keen to learn new skills, meet together and enjoy the events, which are planned. WEDNESDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 7.30 AT TRINITY CHURCH is our pre Christmas Open Evening. We are lucky to host Elizabeth Gordon as our demonstrator. She is currently the chairman of our local Area of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies). She is a fantastic flower arranger and her displays of Christmas flower arrangements should be wonderful. The evening is open to all members and any visitors, with tickets available at the door. If you would like to join our group but missed enrolment night please come to any of our meetings and for further details of our full programme and events please consult our Facebook page or ring 01656222985 Alison Thomas Club Secretary

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB The sun is sitting lower in the sky and the evenings are drawing in, autumn is here! This season is all about picking up and packing up before winter arrives (cheerful isn’t it!) To ensure a vibrant display next spring, plant pansies, bellis daises and gorgeous smelling wallflowers, cut back faded perennials to 5cm above ground level, but don’t be too tidy seed heads are great for insects and look fab covered in Autumn dew, a treat in the mornings! Once your borders are looking good spread a thick layer of compost over them, don’t worry about digging it in, let the worms do the hard work for you. Sometimes it seems pointless the never ending raking up of leaves when the wind blows even more onto your lawn, but stick with it and think of all the lovely leaf mould you can make, it’s good stuff! An added bonus is slugs love to hid in fallen leaves so you’re dong them out of a winter home. Yippee! Its time to start mowing less frequently as growth slows down, but I guarantee however bare your lawn looks the grass will still grow beautifully between the paving slabs! Chris Early

TIDES
SURF REPORT FOR OGMORE BY SEA & SOUTHERNDOWN At the time of writing Mid-September, summer is still here and the surf conditions are pretty flat. There is a glassy swell slowly rolling in this morning that will only break at 1ft and that’s about all we have had this last month. I wonder if any of the South Wales secret spots will offer another foot in size if you are in the know. It was good to see the ‘World Surf League’ back in action and to witness the Finals on the 14th September from Trestles California where 5ft – 6ft waves provided some entertainment. I’ve spent more time witnessing Drs and scientists talk about an early cure for Covid using Ivermectin and others than I have surfing. I understand why we don’t get surf for long periods of time and from researching the Covid prolonged crisis I understand why they don’t give us Ivermectin at 6p a tablet because people don’t research so people don’t know their options so people don’t demand it. Seek and ye shall find as they say. And be reminded that listening to only one source of information is the route to brain washing. TV mainstream media. D.A. Batten
