GOOD NEWS REGARDING DOG MESS

Dear Editor, I’d like to share some ‘good news’ with you regarding the ongoing problem of dog mess on the pavements of Porthcawl. I’ve been in touch with Bridgend Council for around 6 months about this, and they have now started installing new dog waste bins and dog poop bag dispensers in problem areas. The first one showed up in West Park Drive and then one appeared in Fitzhamon Road, near Nottage Primary School (see photo).

Hopefully this is the beginning of cleaner streets for Porthcawl! If readers spot dog mess, please do report it to the Council by emailing cleanupthecounty@bridgend.gov.uk or call them on 01656 643 643 and give them the location (e.g. outside Co-op, Lias Road, Porthcawl). They’ll send someone to clear it up and also record the location. The more people that report it, the better informed they are as to where to place the new bins and bags, so I’d urge readers to get involved and show your love for Porthcawl. Mark Worrall, Porthcawl

ARTS

During the past couple of months

The choir has been working very hard for the annual concert. With a program of 15 songs from the choir, numbers from our wonderful guest artist ‘Trovatori’ and a surprise performance from a couple of rising stars, the evening promises to one of our best. Comparing the night will be Tony Mullins a wellknown local compare. The choir is expertly led by our Musical Director Alec Brooks with Porthcawl’s very own Richard Davis accompanying. Tickets are going on sale soon at £15.00 per ticket. They can be obtained from the Pavilion Box Office, from members of the choir or our choir treasurer Marilyn Hill on 01656782740. If you want a flavour of what we’re doing, visit our Facebook page and see us practicing ‘Amen’. Almost the polished article. Our ladies section out shone themselves once again, with a very successful Summer Fayre at Trinity Church. They raised over £700 for the choir. We would really like to thank them all for their hard work. Following the annual concert, we will be starting a recruitment drive for new members. 2 have recently joined and at least another 3 are expected to attend after the concert. If you’re interested, please contact us on contact@pothcawlmalechoir.co.uk or Noel Williams on 07902 333559. Ian Williams

the Choir has performed Concerts in support of the Ukraine appeal helping to raise over £3000 and were delighted to perform for the Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations Unsung Heroes Awards, The Choir also carried out a virtual horse racing event where we raised £1300 This money was presented to Mr Mike Hnyda at a concert alongside Bridgend based Maternal Harmony Ladies Choir, Mike is an Ambassador to the Ukraine effort and constantly travels to the Ukraine, Mike will use this money for vital supplies to the Ukrainian people.

For any further Information

We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us. We’re currently on our Summer break and will resume our weekly meetings at 7pm on Thursday Sept 12th at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR.

The Choir was delighted to be back on stage and performing again after almost 3 years of choral drought with a performance at the Welsh Proms in St David’s Hall with the Cory Band. A released recording of American Trilogy on social media from one of our rehearsals has brought about an invitation to perform in this year’s Porthcawl Elvis Festival at 3 separate events on Sunday 25th September: BBC Radio Wales at 10:30am; Trinity Church in a Gospel Service at 11:30 and a performance at the High Tide at 2:30pm. We are truly, beyond excited to be performing in the largest Elvis Festival of its kind in the world.

However, I have some great news, so get your diaries out. There are two huge festivals coming to Trecco Bay. The first is Planet Rockstock on Thursday to Sunday, 1st to 4th December. Acts include Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake set), The Sweet, Blaze Bailey (ex-Iron Maiden), Monster Truck, Grand Slam and more to be added.

Côr Bro Ogwr’s annual summer concert was held at All Saints Church, Porthcawl recently. It was a warm evening and the music was suitably joyous and exciting. The concert opened with ‘Sunrise Mass’ by Ola Gjielo, a modern but richly lyrical piece first performed in 2008 in Norway, Gjielo’s home country. The piece uses the Latin Mass text, reflecting a metaphysical journey from heaven to earth; it is rich in soaring harmonies from both choir and string orchestra and brought tears to more than a few eyes. The focus of the second half of the concert was a stirring performance of the perennial favourite, Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. The choir, directed with great energy and passion by Ben Pinnow, was joined by soprano Tara McSwiney and countertenor Piet Zorn, with Benjamin Teague on the organ and a 14-piece orchestra. It was an uplifting evening and reminded us all why singing in a choir can be so elevating and inspiring

BLAW is an opportunity for bereaved families to commemorate the lives of their precious babies, along with raising awareness and opening the conversation around baby Pleaseloss. support bereaved families by lighting a candle for all babies loved and lost on October 15th at 7pm. Bro Morgannwg Baby Loss Support Group are here to support local families who have experienced the loss of a baby during pregnancy or in infancy. We hold a support group on the first Wednesday of the month. We also fundraise to support the Princess of Wales Hospital Bereavement Suite, fund befriender training and memory boxes. Please contact our Facebook page if you would like any support.

Possibly this may not be the best of times for you. Perhaps you are alone, frightened, or it could be that something may have happened in your life but you feel too unnerved to share with a good friend or been recently diagnosed with a life changing illness or it maybe it’s your outer world fearing poverty, famine, war, greed as reported 24 hours a day? Whatever the cause, here are some words of comfort that may help you, so write them on a card to keep in your purse or wallet and repeat them to encourage you to persevere and keep going. This too shall pass - King Solomon When you are going through hell keep going - Winston Churchill. What words do you repeat to yourself when life is tough as it so often is? Are they kind or unkind? Why not replace the old words and find new ones that inspire you, write them down, take a photo and save it to your favourite Remember, device? no matter what others may say you do not have to take criticism from someone you would never go to for trustworthy advice.

Repeat…I am enough! Yes really…you!

Olives are an unusual fruit because of their high fat content. Their most abundant fat is oleic acid, which may have several health benefits. They also contain 4–6% carbs, most of which consists of fiber. Olives are a good source of vitamin E, iron, copper, and calcium and they may also contain high amounts of sodium if packaged in saltwater. Olives are particularly rich in antioxidants and fresh olives are very bitter and usually need to be cured and fermented before eating. Olives are very rich in antioxidants that may contribute to a variety of benefits, such as lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They may also reduce your risk of cancer and bone loss, but more research is necessary. Olive oil contains nutrients that fight inflammation. These include oleic acid as well as the antioxidant oleocanthal. more at: www.healthline.com Glyn Hardwicke

One of the traditional ways of dealing with hot flushes and night sweats is with remedies based on the herb Sage. This herb is well known for its culinary usefulness, but it is also thought to possess a handy ability to rebalance the sweat-regulation mechanism in the brain. This means that however wobbly your hormones are and however much they are throwing out your “thermostat” regulation, Sage can help to bring your temperature back onto Usingline.Sage extracts is very straightforward, and you can choose to take it either during the day to help reduce daytime flushing, or before you go to bed if night sweats are the real problem. Sage is very specific for the flushing and sweating, which are often the key symptoms women are tackling.

We stock a couple of brands of sage tablets with Menoforce being the most popular in reducing the symptoms of hot flushes and night sweats. Many of our customers who are experiencing menopause symptoms have recommended the Menoforce Sage tablets.

Answer: As the menopause is already a time of challenge and change, reducing the practical disruptions it causes to everyday life is important. Minimising its impact on sleep is vital, as lack of sleep prevents the body repairing and regeneration and causes both fatigue and a mental fogginess that makes everything harder to cope with.

FOR years, Welsh Conservative Senedd members have been saying that too many hospital beds have been closed in Wales. The Welsh Labour Government, which has run the Welsh NHS since 1999, has axed 30 per cent of hospital beds over this Whatperiod.are the results? People left on trolleys in A&E departments because there are no beds for them while, outside, ambulances stack up with sick people on board that they are unable to discharge. In the meantime, people who have fallen or who have suffered a suspected stroke or heart attack, are left waiting hours for ambulances to arrive. It is an unrelenting downward spiral, which is costing lives. This situation existed long before Covid in Wales. Vindication of the stance taken by myself and colleagues has come in the form of a report from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. This says that the NHS in the UK needs 13,000 more beds in order to break out of this vicious circle. They blame too few beds for many of the problems now being felt in the health service. Welsh Labour needs to get a grip and reverse the policy of axing beds as a first step.

TheBeach.next phase of the work will see this extended into Sandy Bay and as far as Rhych Point, where additional dune protection works will take place. Much of the work has focused upon the iconic Western Breakwater. As the internal structure of the 200-year-old breakwater still features its original wooden core, extensive renovation and refurbishment was required to ensure that it can continue to stand up to the tides and tough maritime weather

SUMMER OF FUN CELEBRATES

DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Regional Senedd Member

HUGE SUCCESS As I write this, the 2022 Summer of Fun is winding down, and having featured exciting activities ranging from BMX and football to surfing and bushcraft, it has proven itself to have once more been a popular success. In fact, more than 150 children and young people took part on the very first day of the scheme and set a pattern, which was repeated at each event throughout the summer. I hope you all had fun, and are already looking forward to next year’s events. In other news, more than 70 households have come forward to support Ukrainian refugees fleeing from the Russian invasion of their homeland and to offer them somewhere safe to live – but more are urgently needed. Each host household receives a payment of £350 per month, while refugees receive an interim payment of £200 per person. Extensive safeguarding and background checks are carried out beforehand, and the council and its partners provide further support ranging from English language lessons, advice on how to access education, health and financial services, employability, how to apply for a bus pass and more. GRAND PAVILION UPGRADE GETS

I am giving my full backing to plans to upgrade the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl.

When contacting advertisers, please say you saw them in the Seaside News seaside news | 23 Email us your views info@seasidenews.co.uk

As someone who grew up in Porthcawl and went to school here, I have long associations with the Grand Pavilion. It is an iconic building that dominates the Porthcawl seafront and I know how highly it is regarded both by local people and also by the many visitors who have enjoyed the summer shows and pantomimes staged there in the past. This building must continue to play a central role in Porthcawl’s cultural and social life as well as drawing in tourists and daytrippers. I will be fighting to ensure it gets the funding it needs.

All of us know the costs of driving and high and inappropriate speeds in our local communities. That’s why 20mph limits, when used around schools, playgrounds and high streets can be a really useful way of tackling speeding. But the Welsh Government’s approach of introducing a ‘blanket’ 20mph limit in all built-up areas across the whole of Wales is disproportionate and wrong. Residents in Buckley and Monmouth, both pilot towns for this scheme, have said that it caused gridlock on their roads, no enforcement of these new limits, and actually made some aspects less safe; overtaking cyclists at 20mph for example, can now be a really dangerous pursuit. It also comes at a huge economic cost too, £32million just to administer the new scheme and an estimated massive £4.5billion cost to the Welsh economy. It doesn’t have to be like this - surely it makes more sense to allow councils and communities to introduce reduced speed limits, and crucially, enforcements in the areas they think it’s needed, rather than introduce a one-size-fits-all approach across the whole of Wales.

Devolution should mean decisions being taken closer to communities, not Wales-wide diktats from Cardiff Bay.

In 2021, our Welsh Government announced a £5m ‘Summer of Fun’ package, providing activities for young people aged 0-25 to support their social, emotional, and physical wellbeing, re-building confidence and integration into the community postpandemic. The success of the scheme brought its return this year, and I was delighted to see many children across Bridgend and Porthcawl get involved. The Food and Fun scheme at Cynffig Comprehensive in Pyle provided nutrition education, physical activity, and healthy meals for children. It was great to visit with Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Cllr Huw David and Cabinet Member for Education Cllr Jon-Paul Blundell. We were joined by Elaine Winstanley from Awen Libraries who introduced the children to the Summer Reading Festival, as well as Rhys and Emily and 2 calves from Ty Tanglwyst Dairy to learn about farming. The opportunities provided demonstrate the importance of extending to future summer breaks. The schemes have brought about a collaboration of the fantastic services across our community with the purpose of enriching our young people. I will be doing what I can to ensure that the Summer of Fun and Food and Fun scheme are extended in future breaks and enable more children to get involved.

MY SUPPORT

I have worked with BCBC to prepare the submission to UK Government for finance from the Levelling Up Fund to carry out works at the Pavilion, which will deal with some issues related to the concrete structure. It will also provide new facilities including function rooms, café spaces, rooftop facilities and better changing rooms.

Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home. I do feel we need a brief cautionary note regarding this year’s results and any comparisons with previous results. These are the first set of examination results since 2019 and our results compare very favourably. Given the disruption the current Year 13 have endured over the past 2 years we are especially proud of their achievements. We must remind ourselves that they had not sat any external papers over the past two years. Furthermore, there has been much disruption and dislocation to their education during their time in the sixth form. There were several outstanding performers from students who have done exceptionally well. The following students achieved 3 A’s or better at A Level: Lewis Babbage, Luke Bryant, George Davis, Rex Ezard, Natasha Fray, Olivia Geddes, Pippa Harrowing, Rebecca Jones, Morgan Lean, Olivia Lovell, Kara Morgan-Rees, David Sheldon, Matthew Sleep, Holly Thomas, Isabella-Riley Thomas, Samantha Wensley and Harriette Williams.

Head Teacher Mr Slade commented that this excellent series of results will ensure Porthcawl students have secured places at some of the best universities in the country. He continued to congratulate staff and students who were praised for their hard work and steadfast dedication, which was particularly impressive given the most severe challenges the students, had faced. Paul the apostle said that he wasn’t ashamed of the Gospel (Rom 1 v 16). The word Gospel means good news and it is the good news we read about in the Bible. An example of this message is found in Rom 5 v 17 where Paul says that if we receive an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness we will reign in life. I am sure we all want to reign in life. Paul tells us how to do it. He says we must receive two things: 1. The gift of righteousness - this works at two levels. Firstly, that we have a right relationship with God. Secondly, we then at the same time experience God taking us on a journey of transformation so we live righteously (not perfect but definitely changed!). 2. An abundance of grace - this means to continually receive things like Gods strength, power, love and favour as we have a relationship with him. Surely all this will energise us to reign in life. But we must receive the gift! I encourage you to do that today and humbly receive from God, knowing that he loves you. No wonder Paul wasn’t ashamed of this message.

We tried a different way, with the cost of hiring a coach etc we went with DJ Thomas coaches and Enid who was organising our trip booked 20 seats on one of their coach trips it was a success. We had a great day visiting the church, the market, all the charity shops lots of places for lunch perhaps with the odd glass of wine, lots of tea and coffee shops, The weather was very hot but as we meandered around the shops meeting each other as we went, we had a laugh as we talked about our latest purchases, plants, books, tops, sandals, hats, the list was endless. Back on the bus and off home tired but having had a great day out. Next month we’re having a talk about the coast watch which will give us an insight into what goes on in the watch tower by the harbour in Porthcawl call in we’re in the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill 2pm to 4pm tea and biscuits we’d love to see you.

At the beginning of the Summer, GCC’s choirmaster Hyelim Morris organised a wonderful night of music at the Hi-Tide.

It’s been a very busy time for us in August. We instigated and were involved with 12 incidents over a 5-day period when big spring tides, fine weather and school holidays all came together to create a perfect storm. The Lifeboats at Porthcawl and 2 Coastal Response Teams at Llantwit Major and Porthcawl worked flat out. Two key themes have developed, people being cut off at the Ogmore River Mouth and Paddle Boarders. It’s not possible to wade across the River Ogmore 2.5hrs either side of High Water it’s far too dangerous and the force of the water will knock you off your feet. If you’re going to take paddleboards out, please don’t overload them; they are designed for one person. Wear a flotation device like a buoyancy aid, be aware of the tides and currents and take a mobile phone with you just in case you get into trouble. If you do get into trouble, stay with your board, it’s easier for the Lifeboats to see and will keep you afloat. Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard, or wave your arms to attract attention.

RICHMOND ROOSE Leigh Richmond Roose was a footballing celebrity. Born on 27 November 1877, Leigh was a goalkeeper. He was also an amateur at a time when the game was largely professional. A big man at over six feet tall and thirteen stone, Leigh was known as ‘This wondrous Hercules’. He played for Aberystwyth Town, Stoke, Everton and Sunderland. He also won 24 caps for Wales. Powerful and recklessly brave, he possessed amazing reflexes and earned a reputation as a shot-stopper and penalty Leighsaver. led a glamorous life. He wore Saville Row suits and owned an apartment in central London. He was popular with the ladies including, it is said, with musical hall star Marie Lloyd. Leigh joined the British Army at the outbreak of the First World War. He won the Military Medal for bravery and was promoted to the rank of lance corporal. He fought in the Battle of the Somme. Tragically, he was killed towards the end of that battle, on 7 October 1916, aged 38. His body was not recovered, so his name appears on the war memorial for missing soldiers at Thiepval.

A photograph of a Porthcawl Cricket Team 1896 (see photo) suggests a cricket team played matches at the College Field; so, called as the Seabank Hotel was once a boy’s college. They continued to play on that ground until the onset of WW1.

In 1919, Fred Cook the previous secretary of the club, placed an article in the Porthcawl News. “Now that the war is over and most of the members are back, we are anxious to start the club going again this season.”

Ceri Joseph HISTORY Clear

Within a year a club had formed with a new home at the Porthcawl Athletic Club home at Queen’s Park (bottom of Queen’s Ave, see photo) In 1921 Dr Pearson, one of a few men who had survived the war, hit the first ever century of a Porthcawl player against Salisbury C.C. Swansea. Unfortunately, by 1936 the Porthcawl Athletic Club closed as most of the ground was purchased to build houses. 1938 witnesses the emergence of a Porthcawl YMCA C.C. playing at a “suitable ground at Nottage.” Yet within a year cricket had returned to Queen’s Park, which lasted until 1949 at which point, they then returned to Nottage.

Throw into this mix the fact that inflation, already at 10%, is predicted to rise further and faster, plus the fact that between now and the end of December, some 1.3 million mortgages are due for redemption and we can see why the rush for mortgages at the moment is so strong. Alternatively, a trust can be set up for the benefit of the surviving spouse for the rest of his or her lifetime, allowing that spouse to live in the property but not own the deceased’s share of it. There may be many potential benefits of doing this such reducing the Inheritance Tax liability on the spouse’s death, to claim the residence nil rate band and to provide certainty as to where the share passes after the surviving spouse’s death.

If you owned your home together, the form of legal ownership has a major impact. If you owned your home as ‘joint tenants’, you will automatically continue to own the (entire) home if your partner dies. But if you were ‘tenants in common’, your partner’s share is dealt with under the terms of his or her will.

A property held as tenants in common may, of course, still pass to the surviving spouse on the first death, if the deceased spouse left his or her share of the property to the surviving spouse in his or her will, in which case spousal exemption would still apply.

There are many factors to consider when deciding how best to leave property on death and this should be explored as part of a wider discussion about tax and estate planning as a whole.

couples have no legal duty to support each other financially, either while you are living together or if you separate. Nor do you automatically share ownership of your possessions, savings, investments and so on. Cohabiting partners have no automatic right to inherit if their partner dies, although they may be a beneficiary under the other’s will. If you are a beneficiary, any assets you receive may be subject to inheritance tax - there is no exemption for unmarried couples.

Jointly owned properties are held in one of two ways, the first being as joint tenants, which means that on the death of the first joint tenant, the property will pass automatically to the surviving joint tenant, regardless of the terms of any will or the intestacy rules. This transfer will be exempt from Inheritance Tax as the spousal exemption will apply. It will also pass without the need for a Grant of Probate.

PLANNING

If you have lived together ‘as man and wife’ for at least two years or if you can show that you were financially dependent on your partner, you can make a claim for a financial settlement even if you were not a beneficiary of the will. However, making a claim can involve a complex and expensive dispute with the other beneficiaries.

The second way is as tenants in common, when both parties own a distinct “share” in the property – this can be 50-50 or any other split, which would usually be recorded in a Declaration of Trust. On the death of the first tenant in common, his or her share in the property will pass in accordance with his or her will or intestacy.

It is important that you ensure that neither party can make a claim against the other in the future in both life and death. Clean Break Orders can be submitted to the Court when you reach the Conditional Order stage of the Divorce, that is, the middle stage. At that point, the Judge will consider the Clean Break Order and if it is considered fair, will approve the same. Clean Break Orders can be refused if a Judge considers the agreement unfair to one party but your solicitor will usually warn you if there is risk of this. Once a Clean Break Order has been approved, you have the security of knowing that future claims will be barred unless in the most exceptional circumstances. Lazarus

I would like to have some sort of Separation Agreement in place setting out what we have agreed on the division of our assets? Is this a good idea? Answer: My firm advice to you is NOT to proceed by way of a Separation Agreement. They are not 100% legally binding. I advise you to file for Divorce when you are ready and then to obtain a Clean Break Order which can set out what you and your wife have Theagreed.reason for this is that Separation Agreements can be overturned by a Court on subsequent Divorce proceedings if the terms agreed are deemed unfair or if the circumstances of one of the parties have dramatically improved or worsened. This is far from ideal. You will also incur the cost of your Solicitor drawing up the Separation Agreement only to then be advised on the Divorce to obtain a Clean Break Order.

This is the ideal month for taking cuttings of your favourites, a plant grown from a cutting will always be exactly the same as it’s parent, it’s essentially cloning! Seed grown will always be different, so if you have a beautiful rose or delicious gooseberry, all these qualities will remain in the new plants taken from Timecuttings.toplant bulbs, try some saffron crocus bulbs so you can harvest your own saffron - a small pinch adds brilliant colour, aroma and flavour to bland rice, a touch of luxury, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. Will be open on Saturday (17th September) at Bryncethin Community Centre where you can bring items to be fixed completely free of charge (from 10am to 12 mid-day) and have a free tea or coffee while you wait. One of the key aims of Repair Cafes is to contribute towards creating a culture of repair and re-use, directly addressing the ever growing unsustainable growth in landfill and waste. However, with the current cost of living crisis we realise that many people can’t afford to have household items fixed or replaced so this service helps them. Having said that, Repair Café is for everyone living in the County Borough of Bridgend and all are welcome. The types of things we fix include clothes, household electrics, technology, woodwork, children’s toys, furniture and bikes. Bring your items to the above location and a repairer will try

Magical Music is back at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. In 2019 saw the 10th Anniversary of our series of annual fund raising concerts, supporting charities in South Wales. With a full orchestra and chorus of over 80 performers and soloists, our programme is ideal for people of all ages and tastes who enjoy movies, musicals and TV. (No symphonies!) All the performers give freely of their time and all proceeds will again go to the RNLI in the town. Our presenter is Wayne Forester. PORTHCAWL JOY-RIDERS CYCLING WITHOUT AGE (CWA)

Initially the group organised just one Sunday walk of between 8 and 20 miles. Then, over the years, two walks, and since about 2000, a choice of 3 Sunday walks of different lengths and demands, as well as various mid-walks, and summer evening walks.

From the early 1990s youth hostel trips were organised for small groups of members to destinations such as Snowdonia, and The Lake District. 1996 saw the first foray abroad for the group, when some 15 members went on a youth hostel trip for a week’s walking in the Ardennes forest, in Belgium. In 2012, 12 members had a memorable weeks walking in Killarney, Ireland. Trips to the Alps, soon followed, including a twelve day, “Tour de Mont Blanc” Trek in 2014. Our short walkers have also organised Saturday walking trips by coach to places such as Tenby and the Malvern Hills, and some New Year trips. Bridgend Ramblers now has a dedicated website: www.bridgendramblers.org We now have about 250 members and new members are always made very welcome. With an on-going programme of group walks, to suit everyone, the future for Bridgend & District Ramblers looks promising.

CWA is already operating in 52 countries across the world and now it’s time for South Wales and more specifically Porthcawl to play its part. We are now delighted to announce that we are in a position to purchase our second Trishaw after generous donations from individuals and organisations across the town and region. Our mission is to provide a holistic and social prescription approach to enhance, enrich and extend the lives of the older folk and less-abled of Porthcawl and Bridgend. We still welcome interest from individuals who are willing to give a little free time to become Trishaw pilots and assist with the administration of the charity. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the charity and we can guarantee a warm welcome, modest exercise and the joy of providing a service, which is both giving and rewarding in return.
