The Mediterranean Diet is so much more than a diet, and it might just be the key to a long life.
Spring is such a joyous time of year. After a long winter's nap, the bounty of nature returns in bright, bold fashion. There's nothing quite like getting outdoors and taking in the new season of fragrance, textures, and, of course, colors. So many of those natural colors have seeped into our collections this year.
Spring also means trade show season. While it can be a hectic period, I am always rewarded by meeting new people and reconnecting with others. I am anxious to see you all again soon. At the time of the release of this issue, we will have just wrapped up at Design Edge Miami. In April, we will be at High Point Furniture Market. Then we are off to Las Vegas in May for the HD Expo. If you are attending, please stop by our space to say hello and see what is new at Seasonal Living.

COLORFUL HARMONY
For this issue, we were greatly inspired by Rome. There you will find the perfect mix of natural materials, modern sensibility, and color and pattern that is done in a way that only Italians can do. I hope you are inspired by our Roman holiday and glean some information for your next visit to the Eternal City. To start living La Dolce Vita now, we have included two new recipes with plenty of Italian flair. Prepare them for your next authentic Italian dinner party. You'll find our tips for how to throw one on page 15.
Speaking of La Dolce Vita, we have gathered some information for you about the Mediterranean Diet and how it can help you live longer. It is so much more than a diet. The lifestyle component of this approach makes it more about a way of living. What I like about it most is that it encourages physical activity outdoors and strong connections with friends and family.
As always, we are thrilled to present beautiful design projects. The design section features a colorful project by Laurence Carr. The other feature is a bit different for us. Instead of featuring a project, we interviewed interior photographer, Ryan McDonald, to get his advice on what to look for when you hire a professional to photograph your home or interior design project.

Rome, the capital of Italy, is a city with a rich history and culture that has been shaped by centuries of art, architecture, and politics. Visitors to Rome can explore the ancient ruins of the Roman Empire, marvel at the masterpieces of the Renaissance, and stroll through
charming neighborhoods filled with quaint cafes and shops. Here are just a few reasons why you should visit Rome.
THE COLOSSEUM: The Colosseum is one of the most iconic symbols of Rome and the Roman Empire. This ancient amphitheater, which was built in 80 AD, is a testament to the architectural and engineering prowess of the Romans. Visitors can take a tour of the Colosseum and learn about the history of gladiatorial combat, as well as see the underground tunnels and chambers where the gladiators and animals were kept before entering the arena.
THE VATICAN: Rome is the home of the Catholic Church, and the Vatican is the center of the Catholic world. Visitors can take a tour of the Vatican Museums, which house some of the most famous artworks in the world, including the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms. The Vatican also offers tours of St. Peter's Basilica and the Papal Palace, which are both architectural masterpieces.
THE ROMAN FORUM: The Roman Forum is an ancient public square in the heart of Rome. Visitors can explore the ruins of temples, government buildings, and shops that once stood in this bustling center of Roman life. The Roman Forum is also home to the Arch of Titus, which celebrates the Roman victory over Jerusalem in 70 AD.
THE PANTHEON: The Pantheon is a 2,000-year-old temple that has been converted into a church. It is one of the best-preserved ancient buildings in Rome, and its dome is considered one of the engineering marvels of the ancient world. Visitors can take a tour of the Pantheon and learn about the history of this ancient temple and its conversion to a church.
FOOD AND WINE: Rome is known for its delicious food and wine. Visitors can indulge in traditional Roman dishes such as pasta alla carbonara and saltimbocca alla romana, as well as enjoy a glass of local wine. Rome also offers a wide variety of restaurants, from casual trattorias to elegant dining rooms, to suit any budget.

The Dolce Vita, meaning "the sweet life," is a term that encapsulates the Italian way of life. It is a celebration of the pleasures of life, such as good food, good wine, and the company of loved ones. This philosophy is reflected in the way of life in Italy, where enjoying good food and wine is an important part of daily life. The Dolce Vita is also associated with the fashion and film industry of the 1950s and 60s, where it was popularized by films such as Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita."
Food and wine play a central role in the Dolce Vita. Italy is home to a wide variety of regional cuisines, each with its own unique flavors and ingredients. From the rich tomato-based sauces of Naples to the truffles and porcini mushrooms of Piedmont, Italian cuisine is known for its fresh, high-quality ingredients. Italian wine is also worldrenowned, with regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont

GET READY FOR A PASTA SURPRISE. COOKED IN ORANGE JUICE AND WATER, THE BUCATINI MAKES A COLORFUL AND FLAVORFUL BACKDROP FOR THE FRESHNESS OF THE MUSSELS, ORANGE, AND BASIL. A LITTLE CAYENNE AND PEPPERCORNS GIVE IT A GENTLE KICK.
BUCATINI WITH MUSSELS, ORANGE, AND BASIL serves 4
COVER STORY
THE INGREDIENTS:
11½ ounces bucatini pasta
• 24 mussels
2 cloves garlic, pressed
½ teaspoon cayenne powder
½ cup dry white wine
• 15 ripe oranges
12 black peppercorns
24 fresh basil leaves
5 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
• ½ teaspoon salt + more for cooking pasta black pepper, to taste
THE INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Squeeze the juice from twelve of the oranges. Peel the remaining three oranges and segment them to remove all pith and membranes. Break the segments in half. Set aside.
2. Add the juice and peppercorns to a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Fill a bowl with cold water. Add the basil leaves and cook for 5-10 seconds. Remove the basil leaves with a spider or slotted spoon and place them in the cold water to halt the cooking. After 2-3 minutes remove the basil leaves from the cold water and lay them out on paper towels to dry. Do not discard the cooking liquid. It will be used to cook the pasta.
3. Place olive oil, garlic, and cayenne in a large skillet over medium heat. When heated, add the mussels and cover the skillet until the mussels open (3-6 minutes). Add the white wine and cook until it is mostly evaporated. Take the skillet off of the heat, shell the mussels and return them to the pan.
4. Add 4-6 cups of water to the saucepan with the orange juice and bring to a boil. When it boils add salt for cooking the pasta. Add the bucatini. If it does not go into the pan entirely, let the immersed parts soften a bit and then gently push the remainder into the liquid. Cook for the time indicated minus 3 minutes.
5. Place the skillet back over medium heat. Add the pasta without the peppercorns to the skillet to finish cooking until al dente in that liquid. Add a bit of pasta cooking water if necessary. At the end of cooking add the basil and orange pieces to the skillet and toss lightly to blend. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. Serve warm.

LIMONCELLO TIRAMISU
serves 9-12
THE INGREDIENTS:
For the lemon curd:
3 eggs at room temperature
1 cup sugar
• ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
• zest of 2 lemons
1 cup butter at room temperature
For the tiramisu:
1¼ cups heavy whipping cream
2 cups mascarpone cheese
• ⅓ cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
zest of 1 lemon
24 ladyfingers
• ½ cup limoncello
1 cup lemon curd
THE INSTRUCTIONS:
Make the lemon curd:
1. Prepare the lemon curd by gathering all of the ingredients first. Whisk the eggs in a bowl until completely combined.
2. Add the eggs, sugar, lemon juice, and zest to a medium saucepan. Whisk to fully incorporate.
3. Add the butter in pieces and continue to whisk over the lowest heat until the butter melts.
4. Using a rubber spatula, stir continuously for 25 minutes. Turn the heat to medium-low and continue stirring until the curd thickens and turns a creamy, opaque color (about 5 minutes).
5. Immediately transfer the curd to a bowl and continue stirring for a couple of minutes while it cools. If desired, pass through a mesh strainer to remove any solids.
Make the tiramisu:
1. Beat the cream to soft peaks in a medium bowl. Set aside.
2. Beat the mascarpone, sugar, and vanilla in a separate bowl until thick and smooth. Add the lemon zest and stir with a rubber spatula to fully incorporate.

THIS SPIN ON THE TRADITIONAL TIRAMISU GETS EVEN BETTER WITH A LITTLE TIME TO RELAX. PREPARE IT THE DAY BEFORE AND LET IT REST IN THE FRIDGE TO MELD ALL OF THE FLAVORS TOGETHER. A FRESH AND CREAMY DESSERT THAT IS NO-BAKE. MAMMA MIA, THAT'S A WINNER.
GREAT NEWS! YOU WILL END UP WITH MORE LEMON CURD THAN YOU NEED FOR THIS RECIPE. STORE IT IN AN AIRTIGHT CONTAINER IN THE FRIDGE AND SPREAD IT ON TOAST... OR WARM IT SLIGHTLY AND ADD IT TO A BOWL OF VANILLA ICE CREAM.
3. Add the whipped cream to the mascarpone mixture in thirds, folding gently just until incorporated after each addition.
4. Place the limoncello in a small shallow bowl. Briefly dip the ladyfingers in the limoncello on both sides. Place the moistened ladyfingers in the bottom of a square 8x8 or 9x9 baking pan to cover the bottom surface. Trim any ends as necessary to make them fit in one flat layer.
5. Use half of the mascarpone mixture to cover the ladyfingers. Spread it out evenly with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon.
6. Add half of the lemon curd to the top of the mascarpone cream layer and spread it out evenly.
7. Add another layer of dipped ladyfingers, then a layer of the other half of the lemon curd. Finally, spread or pipe the remaining mascarpone cream mixture over the top.
8. Place the tiramisu in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours (or overnight) before serving.
9. Just before serving, garnish with fresh lemon zest.

EAT TO LIVE LONGER
The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and olive oil. It also includes moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and dairy products, while red meat is consumed only in small quantities. This diet is rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants and is low in saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and processed foods.
Research has shown that the Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduced risk of numerous chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. This diet is also associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
One study conducted in the United States followed over 2,500 people for 16 years and found that those who adhered closely to the Mediterranean diet were 23% less likely to die during the study period than those who did not follow the diet. Another study conducted in Greece found that people who followed the Mediterranean diet had a 25% lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who did not follow the diet.
The Mediterranean diet is not only beneficial for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and increasing longevity, but it is also a sustainable way of eating that is accessible and affordable for most people. This diet is based on whole, minimally processed foods that are widely available and can be purchased at affordable prices. Additionally, the Mediterranean diet is a plant-based diet that encourages the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which are generally less expensive than meat and processed foods.
It's important to note that the Mediterranean diet is not just about the individual foods, but also about the overall pattern of eating. This includes eating meals with family and friends, enjoying food slowly, and being physically active.

SLM: Tell us a little about yourself and how you became the designer you are today.
LC: I was born and raised in France, and have always had a deep passion for performing and visual arts and travel that influenced me regarding history, architecture, and design through the years and has made a tremendous impact on my perspectives and approach to business.
My early days working in the performing arts in Europe and New York informed the way I envision circulation and movement in spaces. My years in event organization with the Olympic Games in Australia informed the way I organize my business relations. Living in Asia for several years, I gained an appreciation for Eastern architecture, design, and art, and the interplay of nature with these mediums. I also developed international marketing and strategy business skills.
After attending Parsons
The New School in NYC, I worked at MAC II under the prestigious Mica Ertegun MBE. Throughout that time, I became more interested in how interior architecture and design can support environmental sustainability and human well-being. In 2018, I formed my own firm dedicated to uplifting and perfecting these principles. Now, I am proud to be an advocate in the movement toward circularity in the build environment, architecture, and design industry.
SLM: What is the backstory of this project?
LC: This client approached me with a new build via word of mouth. Building a single home from the ground up gives so many opportunities. We worked with an amazing architect, Jordan Rosenberg, to create a custom residential home with incredible interior architectural details. It was intentional to design a space that meets the client's needs and echoes the values of my firm.

SLM: What items were on your client's wish list?
LC: Sustainability, healthy and noble materials, gently integrated smart technology, colors, textures, and flow were highly prioritized. Beyond that, we focused on a large and welcoming kitchen - which to the client is the heart of the home. We used a waterfall marble island with plenty of countertop area for prepping, cooking, or work, making the kitchen perfect for the family's daily activities and gatherings.
Being connected to nature was a pillar request. We placed an emphasis on the outdoor space, building floor-to-ceiling windows to provide plenty of sunlight. We selected reclaimed oak wood flooring, wood doors and shelves throughout the house with elevated ceilings, and stone and metal accessories.
SLM: Where is the project and what were the major challenges you faced during the project? How did you address them?
LC: This home is in the greater NYC area, just outside the city. It was an exciting challenge to design, build, and furnish a 9,000 square ft home for a family of five while creating intimate and comfortable spaces for everyone to gather and connect. I had to find a delicate balance between functionality, circulation, and these connected spaces. To that end, I leaned into ancient practices like iChing, Feng Shui, and Sacred Geometry and divided the floors of the house accordingly. I designed the basement level to be more of a "play space" with a fitness room, areas for entertaining with a buffet kitchenette, and a movie theater room. The ground floor hosts an open floor plan with the kitchen, living room, dining room, a home office, and a hybrid music room/library-style sitting room, as well as an outdoor living and kitchen

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO PRESENT FURNITURE DESIGNER, JOHN KELLY. JOHN'S EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF FURNITURE LED US TO HIM TO CREATE FIVE NEW CHAIRS FOR OUR 2023 LINEUP. THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO TAKE FAMILIAR INDOOR CHAIR FORMS AND TRANSLATE THEM INTO SEATING WITH UNIQUE STYLING THAT IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR OUTDOOR USE.
John Kelly is a licensed architect who has been designing and producing architectural projects and home furnishings since 1987. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Architecture [1989], and a Bachelor of Arts in Design [1985].
Since 1989, he has lived in New York City. Over the past twenty-five years, John has designed a broad range of products, including indoor and outdoor furniture, upholstery, carpets, lighting, and accessories. In addition to his own signature collections, John Kelly has created and licensed designs to furniture brands in North America, Europe, and Asia over the past twenty years. Notable private label customers include Calvin Klein [US], Sable Island [UK], Starbay [France], Woven + [Netherlands], Hinoki Kagu [Japan], Inart [Korea], Maiori [Hong Kong], Koda [Singapore], Kian [Malaysia], Paiza Living [China], and Wise- Wise [Japan].

SLM: Tell us a bit about yourself.
RM: I embraced photography from an early age, as my father worked for storied commercial architectural photography firm Hedrich Blessing for many years. I grew up learning the trade from him, began assisting on set as a teenager, and ultimately attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for photography. I've been behind the camera ever since, primarily documenting residential interiors.
SLM: What should designers consider when choosing a photographer?
RM: There are obvious basics like rates and schedule availability to consider, but there are some things that I think can get overlooked initially that end up being important when designers are forming a working relationship with a photographer. It's important to understand whether they bring lighting, shoot with natural light, or a combination of both - each will net different results in the photos. Getting an understanding of approximately how many images they get in a day also is important; each photographer approaches this differently. Most established photographers have a contract or FAQ document that dives into the details; read the fine print and ask questions so you can start things out on the right foot and avoid surprises, as there are truly so many variables.
SLM: What makes a house "ready to photograph"?
RM: Most designers want to wait until all product is installed and the details are fine-tuned before they photograph, but something commonly overlooked is the cleanliness of the space. Lots of time can be saved if surfaces are clean and everything is tidy ahead of shoot day.
SLM: How can designers make the most of the photo shoot day?
RM: This may seem obvious, but staying focused is so key to a successful shoot. Designers are very busy people, but when they take conference calls and respond to emails throughout the day, it dramatically slows things down. Keeping the energy with the photographer while staying focused on the shot list will drive the photo count up, every single time. Speaking of shot list, being clear at the start of the day on what exactly you want photographed is important as well. I typically walk through the house with my client and discuss what absolutely must be documented and what is nice to have if we have time. That list drives the pace of the day.
SLM: Who are other important contributors on set?
RM: Many photographers have an assistant with them during photo shoot days. Assistants keep things moving by setting up lights, straightening blankets, holding reflection discs, and other tasks that, when taken together, make a major positive impact on the day. My favorite shoots also include a stylist. Contrary to what some may expect, photo stylists aren't there to compete with the designer's vision - rather, they bring the design to life by helping it jump off the page. They understand how to create depth in the image by adjusting a chair, bring a sense of vibrancy with florals and plants, and incorporate a lived-in feel with a perfectly placed set of slippers.

SLM: How do image usage rights work?
RM: Every photographer approaches this a bit differently, but in general, it can be helpful to re-frame it in the mindset of a designer. If a designer created a design for a paying client, and that client then handed those drawings or ideas directly over to someone else to use for free, that wouldn't feel right. That's because those ideas, the right to use those designs - they're what the designer is selling. Similarly, the right to use my images is what I am selling. So, passing them off to another party to use breaks most photographers' usage policies. If a request like this comes in, it's best to check with the photographer to understand how they would like to manage it.
MORE TO CONSIDER WHEN HIRING AN INTERIOR PHOTOGRAPHER:
EXPERIENCE AND PORTFOLIO - Look for a photographer with experience in shooting interior designs. Check out their portfolio to see if their style and quality of work aligns with what you are looking for.
EQUIPMENT - Ensure that the photographer has the right equipment to capture your interior design. This includes high-quality camera gear, lighting equipment, and editing software.
LIGHTING - Lighting plays a crucial role in interior design photography. Make sure the photographer knows how to work with natural and artificial light and can use it to highlight the design features of your space.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL - A good interior design photographer should have an eye for detail and be able to capture the essence of your design with precision.
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION - Ensure that the photographer is open to collaboration and can communicate effectively with you to understand your vision for the shoot.
POST-PRODUCTION - Find out if the photographer offers post-production services such as retouching and editing. This can help enhance the overall look of your interior design and create a more polished final product.
COST AND TIMING - Discuss the cost of the shoot upfront and confirm the timeline for delivery of the final images. Make sure the photographer is clear on your budget and can deliver quality work within your time frame.

space. The bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, and a second office are on the 2nd level.
SLM: How did you incorporate elements of wellness into the space?
LC: We used large floor-to-ceiling windows placed in accordance with compass sun orientation. The bathrooms are maximized for wellness as well, with large soaking tubs and steam showers. All of the materials used in this home, from the wood we used in the build
to the wall finishes to the furnishings are sustainable, healthy, and noble materials that protect the client’s health and do far less damage to the environment than the alternatives. We also built in many smart-tech elements: smart kitchen appliances, HVAC EPAapproved systems, water-efficient faucets and toilets, and lighting and window treatments on timed routines.
SLM: How did you address sustainability?
LC: As the founding principle of my business, sustainability was prioritized from the very beginning. We explained to our team of contractors the importance of implementing these materials from the ground up. We used third-party certified materials (like FSCcertified wood), and innovative bio-materials created specifically for sustainability (such as the MOGU tile and Durat ecological solid surface material in bathrooms). We sourced brands that offer transparency about their processes such as Cisco Home, Coco Mat, Roche Bobois, Rhyme Studio custom wool rugs, and Farrow & Ball paint, and we focused on efficiency and reuse including antique furniture as much as possible.
SLM: What are you most proud of regarding this project?
LC: This is hard to narrow down! Overall, the mindfulness with which the home was designed makes me most proud. No detail was left spared to create a space that represents the best of beauty, sustainability, functionality, and wellness-enhancing elements. My greatest reward is knowing that I was part of the feeling the client enjoys when walking into their home after a long day, the memories they will create with family and friends, the compliments they receive from visitors, and the comfort in knowing that everything in their home supports their happiness, health, and wellbeing.
SLM: Are there any particular points of interest we should note?
LC: Because art has always been such an influence in this family's life, we sought out unique and interesting mixed-media fine art pieces with the help of Velvenoir Art Consultancy. Extraordinary pieces from emerging artists like Bobbie Burgers in the music room and Nike Schroeder in the large living room bring amazing color, interest, and life into the home.
The furniture is an eclectic mix of contemporary sustainable brands and vintage and heirloom pieces sourced globally from this client’s extensive travels. They love looking around and seeing echoes of the places that left imprints on their heart in the decor and design. Mementos are important elements of a home, they ground one’s footprint in the space. Sustainablymade sculptural vessels, from a capsule collection I am launching this spring, are also on display.
Balancing the modern and ancient is a juxtaposition that brings such visual intrigue into a space and offers opportunities for cherished global objects and antiques to retain relevance, even in contemporary environments like this.
