WHY BUY:

PENNY PREVILLE JEWELRY

1

With 35 years of experience, and countless awards including, (to name a few) the JA New Designer of the Year in 1978, the Blenheim Award for Continued Excellence Design by the Jewelers of American in 1995, Leading American Designer by the World Gold Council in 1996, and Excellence in Design from the Women's Jeweler's Association in 1997, Preville has a talent that was recognized instantly and has sustained her place as a leading luxury jeweler.

5

4

Her client list is as almost as enviable as the jewelry itself. Since the line's launch in 1975 it is almost safe to say that her gems have been worn by everyone in Hollywood including Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman, and young starlets like Anne Hathaway and Vanessa Hudgens (who just wore Preville's jewels to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party).

16

S E A S O N S

|

She has a definitive feminine style that perfectly balances modern sophistication with intricate details, giving each piece a one of a kind feel and look. Her collections, which she says she is, "constantly refining and re-evaluating," are divided into three categories: Classic, a collection that is crisp, refined, and perfect to wear anywhere; Art Deco, a collection that is boundlessly elegant and modern; and lastly Garland, an ultra-feminine collection with a luxurious old world aesthetic.

3

Preville has more than remained relevant as a jeweler in her thirty plus years in the business. In fact, Preville has notable forsight for predicting and defining trends. The designer says, "I am influenced by fashion and culture, but I also believe in continuity. A designer should remain true to their style. The challenge is to keep pushing one step ahead of what women want."

Preville's pieces can be custom ordered to suit client needs. Her designs are offered in eighteen carat white, yellow and rose gold, and platinum and can be set with diamonds or an array of precious stones. The designer also can incorporate millegrain and hand engraving- details that reflect the designer's belief that, "Jewelry is very personal and individual to the wearer, my goal is to keep designing pieces that will make a woman look and feel fabulous." BIRDS OF A FEATHER

A

rose is a rose is a rose, loveliness extreme. Not to offend Gertrude Stein, but for bride Robin O’Donnell Carmody, daughter of Laurie and Christopher Carmody, excluding the rose from her vintage inspired wedding was one of the many details that made it truly unique, and ironically extremely lovely. For the bride who wed Scott Walter Sims, son of Anita and Terry Sims, on November 7, 2009 at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, it was attention to detail that she believed would set her wedding apart. The roses or lack of roses was one such detail. The bride explains her decision saying, “It’s not that I don’t like roses, I just wanted my flowers to be different from what I’d seen in other weddings. I wanted lots of different, unusual flowers.” Helping the bride achieve her floral vision was Patrick Andrew of Hereford Andrew Designs who used burgundy dahlias, dark purple calla lilies, and antique hydrangeas mixed with natural elements like pods, twigs, moss and feathers to create beautifully original bouquets and arrangements for the big day. Incorporating feathers into the wedding was vital for the bride whose theme was “vintage bird”, an idea that came from the bride’s desire to, “mix old with new.” Wearing a vintage dress that had been in her family since 1969 and was previously worn by four women in her family, the bride chose to wear a different veil and had a custom feather headpiece made to make her bridal look uniquely hers. The green headpiece, the bride’s favorite color, incorporated the “vintage bird” theme which really shone at the reception, held at Algonquin Country Club, where centerpieces were created with bird cages fills with flowers and bird’s nests, which the bride says were, “Absolutely perfect!” The detail oriented wedding was a gorgeous melding of vintage inspiration and modern creativity, a concept thought up by the bride who was determined to create a day that truly reflected her sensibilities. 24

THE ALMOST PERFECT PROPOSAL

I

n June 2004 Emily Sachs, daughter of Bill and Cindy Sachs, met Pete Odum, son of Stephen and Irene Odum, and although she didn’t know he would be her future husband, she was sure she was ok with making him her current boyfriend. The bride, only a freshman in college at the time, asked Pete on a date because, “he was too scared,” she recalls with humor. And while she made it easy for him to get a date, she presented quite the challenge when he was trying to get her hand in marriage. The groom planned to propose to Emily under the pretense of going to the Muny with her sister, when in actuality they would skip the show and go straight to the Boathouse where both of their families were waiting to celebrate the engagement. However, as best-laid plans go, his would endure a few complications. After arriving at the Muny, he hadn’t anticipated his bride-to-be’s loathing for heat. So as he was setting up his perfect proposal, she was getting more and more agitated with the hot July weather. When he asked her to wait outside for her sister, she said, “Are you joking?” The bride laughs while she tells the story, and

26

recalls how he then replied, “You are so damn difficult,” while pulling out the small white box and holding it out to her. With hand over her mouth in shock, Pete was finally able to ask the question to which she answered yes. Thus wedding plans began, and with the help of her wedding planner Sarah Grus, the bride to be was able to plan a wedding day that reflected her personal style, which she describes as, “classic with a little quirk.” A classically quirky wedding is certainly what resulted when the couple wed on October 24, 2009 at Saint Ambrose Church. Following their traditional nuptials, the newlyweds celebrated with a reception at the Trolley Room at Lindell Pavilion that was full of personal touches. From the bride’s wedding paper from Two Blue Doors, she is co-owner of the store, which she said was, “really key for me,” to the bride’s surprise inclusion of their goldendoodle George in the form of a groom’s cake, the reception was a true representation of the newlyweds. For this couple, the details made the day, and the bride says she has, “nothing but warm memories,” of the fantastic day.

CANDID SMILES Shooting the Wedding Album Is it photojournalism?

W

edding photography was always focused on a traditional style. It included gorgeous group photos, the bride and groom at the altar and the “grand moments,” those cake-cutting, bouquet tossing and the confetti send-off shots. And then in the mid-‘90s, photojournalism edged onto the wedding scene. It came quietly. It intrigued. It had an artful rawness, it seemed candid. It was story-like. “The purest definition means snapping a photo when the subject is not aware of being photographed,” said Sarah Carmody at S. Carmody Photography. “It’s about documenting, like a news story…” Yet its meaning has evolved. “Even when we started doing it, we had to mix it up because people still wanted to see the formal shots,” Carmody said. In truth, weddings literally require a combination of approaches 34

S E A S O N S

combining traditional style with contemporary styles. “Honestly, most people don’t really want pure photojournalism. It’s random and you can’t necessarily get the key shots.” She notes that weddings are the most challenging because there are a lot of people, multiple lighting situations, all kinds of architecture, and interior and exterior settings. “It is not just one picture that encompasses photojournalism style but rather all of them and how they connect to document the wedding. Some photographers call it ‘documentary style’, in fact,” Carmody added. Professional wedding photographers are always thinking and planning as they shoot. Ultimately, it’s difficult to pinpoint which photography style is best for a wedding. “You do some pictures like photojournalism, some are like a fashion shoot, some are more traditional, and some pictures are more

S E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E D I G I T A L .C O M

artistic. Then at the reception, there are the “party” pictures, as well.” Wedding photography ultimately crosses all the categories – there is so much going on. The pros position themselves to get good composition, flattering pictures and simultaneously watch for details that add or take away from the shot. True photojournalism would mean snapping away. Photojournalism does translate into how the photo album is laid out. Rather than the traditional album with one matted photo per page, today’s story-style album uses collage and graphic design, creating a “coffee table” book. For those brides searching for photojournalistic style, it’s best to judge by a photographer’s actual work rather than adhering to a verbal definition, and St. Louis is rich with choices. - By Diana Losciale

FIT TO RIDE Exercise is integral to horsemanship

By Diana Losciale

A

lthough the casual rider may not experience it, horseback riding can be a cardio workout. “If you advance to where you are riding and influencing the horse, and sitting a trot, you can get a good workout. And everything you do matters,” said Liz Drew, owner of Drew Training Stables. Drew encourages her riders to exercise. It’s about being fit enough to maintain balance, to sit the horse properly, and to hold oneself upright, without falling over the horse’s neck. It’s also about being strong enough to direct the horse, to communicate with it. Her fitness focus encompasses calisthenics, cardio, strength training, breathing techniques and nutrition. Overall, it’s about biomechanics. It is not about weight. As a trainer, Drew keenly observes her students’ moves. As a current fitness expert, she understands biomechanics. “If you can’t explain to you students what they’re doing correctly or incorrectly, you can’t help them get better. And if they cannot control that piece of their anatomy, it doesn’t do any good.” That’s where fitness comes in to improve core strength. Specific exercises can reduce error and improve such things as overarching of the back, slumping over the horse’s neck, and bending at the waist when lifting the leg.

“So many problems come from people being asymmetrical and if we don’t deal with it, it’s insidious,” Drew said. What helps? Strengthen the laterals and obliques; their development is critical. Try one-legged squats and balancing movements. Practice wall squats which are great for improving posting in the saddle. Stretch. Do yoga. Balance on one leg, then the other to improve alignment. Practice leg lifts to cure hunching in the saddle. Do plank exercises for trunk stability. “If you have strong core muscles, you can apply your leg from the hip down and not move an inch

otherwise. You will be secure and quiet on the horse.” On horseback, the rider’s vertical alignment rules, and balance is key. The rider’s balance affects the horse’s balance. Yet exercise requires motivation. “And that motivation may be to improve your seat and your horsemanship score.” Does the horse know a fit rider? “Oh yes, horses know,” Drew assured. A fit rider, who’s not slipping, slumping, off balance or grabbing at the reins, makes an even happier horse. ❖

S AL ZBURG Still alive with the sound of music Story and photography by Judy Crowell

Fortress Hohensalzburg above the Salzach River

S

alzburg, with its magnificent Alpine setting, is the capital of Austria. Salt mines and salt (Salz), or “white gold” as many call it gave the city its history and wealth. Deemed a World Heritage Site in 1997, Salzburg’s “Old Town” (Altstadt) with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best preserved city centers in Europe. The city’s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, lives on in every corner: at his birthplace, in outdoor concerts, in the music of strolling musicians, in cafes named for him and, of course, in the ubiquitous souvenir shops selling everything from salt shakers and snowglobes to T-shirts. The 5 star Hotel Sacher, its face fronting the heart of the city, its back along the banks of the Salzbach River, affords fantastic views of the massive Fortress Hohensalzburg (Festung Hohensalzburg) and many other landmarks. Coffee houses are the heart of Salzburg and you must slow down and join in the age old, leisurely pastime of coffee and pastries. Some of the finest: Café Tomaselli, the oldest coffee house in Salzburg; Kunstlercafe, the artist’s café and The Bazar, the second living room of writers. Austrians think nothing of ordering 42

one cup of coffee and lingering two to three hours enjoying it. Nary a waiter will hassle you. On the necessity of coffee houses, Viennese journalist, Alfred Polgar, once wrote, “Coffee houses are frequented by people who want to be alone and need company for that.” If salt was the source of Salzburg’s past wealth, tourism accounts for most of their present day economy. And for many Americans, a tremendous draw is still the lure of “The Sound of Music.” The lovely Mirabell Garden (Mirabellgarten) where Maria and the children danced through the hedge arcade and around the statuary of Ottavio Mosto, singing “Do-ReMi”. The gazebo at Hellbrunn Palace (Schloss Hellbrunn) where Rolf and Liesl, at sixteen going on seventeen, fell in love. The church of Moon Lake (Mondsee) where Maria was married and St. Peter’s Abbey and Cemetery (St.Peter Stift und Friedhof), the most beautiful cemetery I’ve ever seen, where the von Trapp family hid from the Nazis. In this gorgeous place, one is granted the privilege of “residing” for a mere thirty years. After that you’re moved! In spite of the monetary windfall “The Sound of Music” continues to bring them, Austrians do not like the movie. They had their own cinematic

version of the story, “Die Trapp Familie” a more realistic one, produced in 1956 by Wolfgang Reinhardt, who, after paying Maria $10,000, convinced her to relinquish all film and royalty rights. And never, ever ask if “Edelweiss” is their national anthem. It’s not. Upon seeing reminders of the movie everywhere, it took every ounce of restraint I could muster not to break into song, thereby humiliating not only myself, but our native Salz-

burg guide and my family back home in California. Arriving home, I let Maria inspire me thusly: Lingering in cafes, a fresh sacher torte, Mirabell garden, everything Mozart, Street violinists serenading with strings, These are a few of my favorite things.

These are a few of my favorite things. When I’m back home, Sipping Starbucks, No more noodles or strudels, I simply remember the calories I’m saving, And that lifts my spirits by oodles. ❖

ot long ago, while traveling through Yellowstone National Park with my family, I was standing in the massive lobby of the Old Faithful Inn, built in 1904 in a style known as National Park Service Rustic and renovated in 1999. As I stood there, in front of the 500 ton, 85 foot stone fireplace, Jett Hitt some of the most beautiful music I’d ever heard began to fill the cavernous space. “Do you hear what I’m hearing?” I asked. “I wonder who composed this.”

You can imagine my surprise when a handsome young cowboy, wearing jeans, cowboy boots, chaps and a tan Stetson and seated at a nearby table stood up and introduced himself, “I’m glad you like it. The music is a concerto called Yellowstone for Violin and Orchestra. It was recorded in Bratislava by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and I’m the composer. My name is Jett Hitt.” Not until I purchased the CD and returned home did I realize the extent of his humility. This unassuming composer who refers to himself as an “Ozark Mountain Hillbilly”, complete with a grandfather who was incarcerated during the 1930s for making moonshine,

down an elk. One can hear the cries of animals and Indian chants as the sounds of strings soar through forests and canyons, giving the listener “a glimpse into what is surely the Garden of Eden without the tree.” A nighttime ride on Jitterbug, his red roan filly, inspired the second movement as he “looked up to see the sky rent in two, one half dark and foreboding and the other filled with a million stars.” An area known as the Hoodoos, formed by many earthquakes and consumed by the spirit of the American Indian, “a place to know God”, was reached by Jett on horseback. “Hopefully,

Living composers “don’t get no respect”, as Rodney Dangerfield used to say. And, sadly, it’s often true that “no man is a prophet in his own land.” This Missouri treasure deserves to have his magnificent concerto performed, premiered in the United States, preferably in St. Louis. How I would love to sit in one of the red velvet seats in Powell Hall, as his evocative music wafts through the rafters. Stirring up a Great Grey Owl or

two to swoop down from the balconies, a few North American Grey Wolves roaming the aisles, an Eagle perched on the crystal chandelier, a Big Horn Ram aiding the percussion section. What a sight that would be. What amazing sounds we would hear. ❖

Wearing the perfect hat is almost as important as betting on the right horse. We’ve found a talented milliner whose elegant creations are a sure thing. Saint Louis born, Erin Saboe discovered her passion for hats after attending a Kentucky Derby race with her husband who was in medical school in the area. Following her eye-opening experience, Saboe trained at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for millinery and has been making women’s hats for over ten years. THE MINT JULEP quintessential element to a proper Derby celebration is the Mint Julep. Famously associated with the race, this refreshing drink is best when made fresh so we contacted the renowned bourbon distiller Maker’s Mark for their coveted recipe.

A

TO PREPARE THE MINT EXTRACT, remove about 40 small mint leaves – wash and place in a small mixing bowl. Cover with 3 parts of Maker’s Mark. Allow the leaves to soak for 15 minutes. Then gather the leaves in a clean, soap-free piece of cotton cloth and wring the mint bundle over the bowl of whisky. Dip the bundle again and repeat the process several times. Then set aside. TO PREPARE THE SIMPLE SYRUP, mix 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water in a cooking pot. Heat to dissolve the sugar. Stir constantly so the sugar does not burn. Set aside to cool. TO PREPARE THE MINT JULEP MIXTURE, pour 3 1/2 cups of Maker’s Mark into a large pitcher. Add 1 cup of the simple syrup to the bowl.

Now, begin adding the mint extract a tablespoon at a time to the julep mixture. Each batch of mint extract is different, so you must taste and smell after each tablespoon is added. You may have to leave the room a time or two to clear your nose. The tendency is to use too much mint. You are looking for a soft mint aroma and taste – generally about 3 tablespoons. When you think it’s right, pour the whole mixture back into the empty liter bottle and refrigerate it for at least 24 hours to “marry” the flavors. TO SERVE THE MINT JULEP, fill each glass (preferably a silver Mint Julep cup) half full with shaved ice. Insert a sprig of mint, and then pack in more ice to about an inch over the top of the cup. Then, insert a straw that has been cut to one inch above the top of the cup so the nose is forced close to the mint when sipping the julep.

When frost forms on the cup, pour the refrigerated julep mixture over the ice and add a sprinkle of powdered sugar to the top of the ice. Then serve. 64

The Hydrangea THE LOW-DOWN

CULTIVATION

Technically speaking hydrangeas are a flowering shrub native to southern and eastern Asia, but these shrubs also flourish here in Saint Louis. Hydrangea is a genus of about 100 species that produce flowers from late spring to late autumn, earning one variety the nickname “endless summer” due to their late starting and reoccurring blooms. There are four popular species of hydrangea, Hydrangea Macrophylla, Hydrangea Arborescens, Hydrangea Quercifolia, and Hydrangea Paniculata. The most popular species are the Macrophylla, commonly referred to as Mophead Hydrangeas, and they come in several varieties. Mopheads feature a globe shape and have flowers which are individually very small and bloom in bunches. Another species, although less commonly grown are Oak Leaf hydrangeas. This variety was actually cultivated in the United States. The Oak Leaf hydrangea is named for the large leaves that appear on all varieties of this species. Perhaps the most dramatic hydrangea is the Annabelle, whose heads can grow over ten inches in diameter. Unlike many hydrangeas, the Annabelle variety is incredibly resilient, blooming yearly even after over-pruning or intensely cold winters. Hydrangeas bloom in white, blues, purples and pinks; however, the exact color depends a lot on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. More acidic soil produces blue flowers, while neutral soils result in pale cream or white blooms and alkaline rich soil produces pink or purple buds.

The first rule of thumb is to plant hydrangeas in moist rich soil and give them room to grow. For most hydrangeas the plant will reach at least 4 by 4 feet, and despite your best efforts, hydrangeas are nearly impossible to keep pruned to a smaller size than they wish to grow. Although stubborn in that respect, hydrangeas are actually fairly easy to cultivate. The plants do best when planted in an area where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade; too much of either is not good for these plants however, and they won’t thrive in full shade. It is possible to grow hydrangeas in full sun, but they must be watered well and won't bloom as frequently. A good rule of thumb for hydrangeas is, if grass grows, so will the flower. If not in direct sunlight, be careful not to overwater the plant, as that can lead to root rot.

WHEN It is best to plant hydrangeas in early summer or fall. You should never plant a hydrangea in spring when there is still chance of a frost, or in the peak of summer.

DEADHEADING When cutting blooms for arrangements in June or July it is fine to cut them with long stems because at this point the bloom buds haven't set for the following year. However, in the beginning of August the flowers should be cut with short stems as to leave the developing buds undisturbed. A good way to insure the safety of the young buds is to only cut above the first set of large leaves. ❖

Gardening with

Gay Goessling By Jenny Seyfried

W

ith twenty years experience, a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University and numerous awards and accolades for her residential designs, Gay Goessling is the quintessential go-to authority for gardening inspiration. Goessling’s unique aesthetic blends classic de-

sign with an appreciation for the plants and earth she manipulates. With a BA in Botany and Art History, the designer has found a career that combines her passions. Drawing inspiration from ancient and indigenous cultures, Goessling creates spaces that are beautiful and restful, giving a sense of tranquility. With

Q&A

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY WHEN DESIGNING A GARDEN SPACE?

I try to design spaces that are a balanced microcosm of the earth and create an air of magic and mystery. The idea is to create rooms that evoke different feelings: a sunny room to brighten your life and a shady room to calm it. I want garden designs to inspire and revitalize so I create peaceful and simple spaces that take individuals away from their everyday lives. I can’t stress enough to keep it simple and sophisticated. WHAT DO YOU PLANT IN SHADE?

In shade gardens, I love using dogwoods and serviceberry. For groundcover, woodland wildflowers are a great option. 76

the city in bloom, we sat down with the Saint Louis designer to find out what rules her green thumb follows when creating a garden space.

IN THE GARDEN

SEASONS

They are an amazing spot of brilliance after a long winter. HOW ABOUT IN FULL SUN?

Flowering shrubs, such as shrub roses, hydrangeas, "Miss Kim" lilac, and crape myrtle are favorites for sun gardens. Unlike perennials, they are hardy and low maintenance. Recently shrub roses have been susceptible to a witches broom virus, so use with caution. DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO PLANT OR SHRUB?

For an architectural look and hedging I tend to use Hornbeams a lot. ARE THERE ANY PLANTS THAT WORK ESPECIALLY WELL TOGETHER?

There are so many! I love Bishop’s Cap and Lenten Rose (hellebores) together. The different textures complement each other and the Lenten rose is evergreen. It is a great plant. The Lenten rose starts blooming in February when things are bleak and remind me that spring is coming. ARE THERE OTHERS?

Ferns look great with Dogwoods and Hydrangea with shrub roses. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE PLANT OR FLOWER?

For my shade garden, I need things that don’t take much care since I am busy with other peoples gardens. This spring, I love the yellow violet and other woodland perennials that stay contained unlike the purple violet so I don’t have to weed.

WHAT COLORS ARE YOU DRAWN TO?

IS THERE A TOOL YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?

I love color, and I use different pallets for my different moods. When designing for clients, I usually design with the colors my clients like simply because they are preferred, except for spaces used at night; I use a white pallet because they show up. A rule of thumb is to limit the pallet of color.

For my own garden I have to have good pruners. It’s like being a good cook: you have to have a good knife. Also, I of course have to have good pencils for my sketching and designing! ❖ To contact Gay visit: www.goesslingdesign.com

This is one of the reasons the homeowners fell in love with the property says Steve Engel. “We loved the house for the setting, the light, and the pool.” The potential of the property may not have been obvious to everyone, but with Steve and Valerie’s interests, experience, and contacts purchasing the home and beginning renovations was a no brainer.

With the original staircase from its days as a farmhouse and a James Loder painting hanging on the wall, the entryway to the home is extremely inviting.

The dining room perfectly blends contemporary tastes with antique collectables. The chairs carved to resemble bamboo and finished in a white wash play well against the antique sconces and dark wood oval dining table.

Due to the home’s age, the remodel was an organic experience. Every step along the way the couple uncovered something unexpected, but unlike most, they faced each discovery with the calm and creativity of pros. When installing a fireplace in the living room the couple was pleasantly surprised with the pair of original small round windows that had been previously covered by walls. However, other surprises weren’t as well received. While uncovering four layers of old flooring, the Engel’s discovered 90

concrete foundation in parts of the home where porches had been when the home was still a working farm. “The brick flooring came out of that,” Steve explains, “We couldn’t put anything on top of the concrete and still have level flooring, so we decided to use brick instead.” What started as a last minute solution ended up being a genius point of visual interest throughout the house. The home is a well balanced mix of antique collectables and sophisticated modern pieces. Steve admits that the couple, “worried about the

home feeling like a museum,” on account of the couple’s impressive quantity of collected antiques, which is a shared hobby for the duo, and is greatly fostered by Robert Morrissey (Clark Graves Antiques). Beautifully melding the 18th century antiques with their 21st century lifestyle, the couple incorporated plenty of modern accents and tried to, “bring the antiques into a contemporary setting.” What results from their efforts is an elegant fusion of the two distinct styles.

The living room balances the couple’s 18th century antique furniture with a modern sofa and matching chairs. The robin's egg blue lamps and pale blue throw pillows add color to the room. Linen drapes puddle on the natural wide-planked northeastern pine floors.

Nowhere in the home better highlights this aesthetic than the living room. Flanked by two sets of large windows, the room is flooded with natural light enhancing the warm gold tones of the natural northeastern pine floors which came from Vermont and are preserved with Tung Oil. Atop the wide-planked floors sit contemporary chairs and a sofa, upholstered in a gorgeous cream, accented with cool pale blue pillows and anchored with a sea grass area rug. When asked the details of these textiles, Steve laughs a bit,

saying, “they were taken care of by Frank Patton Interiors. The modern lines of the furniture, and simple linen drapes which beautifully frame the large windows, play wonderfully against the antiques scattered throughout the room, like the Queen Anne side table or the Boston highboy, both from the 18th century. Grounding the bright room, and adding visual interest, the antiques play against the modern lines and pale colors resulting with a subtlety elegant, and an ever so inviting space.

A similar allure is achieved in the dining room, it's simplicity abounds with complex style. An oval table surrounded by the visually intriguing solid wood frame chairs handcrafted to resemble Upper Left: The brick landing, just off the kitchen leads to the family room as well as outside to the garden and pool areas. With large French doors and exposed brick floors, covered with an oriental area rug, the space is decorated with antique American flag prints and a pair of chairs. Lower Left: Playful accents like the oversized red clock and personal collectables placed on the built in shelves create a fun and functional home office space.

bamboo and finished in a white wash; the dining room is straightforward and clean. glass sconces from Rhode Island, are two contemporary paintings by Mara Plotkin, an artist who the owners know little of, but whose paintings they had to have, Steve says. Another painting which the couple had to have resides on the wall along the stairwell which retains a farm-like charm with its steps painted a glossy black. The large oil painting by James Loder is from Ziern’s and Steve recalls how he and his wife, “walked by it for two years until we caved and bought it.” Like the other one of kind pieces in the home, the painting creates depth and interest against the pale ivory walls.

Keeping the colors light was intentional on the part of the Engel’s who used the same color throughout the entire home, except for the kitchen and the master bedroom, their walls were covered with the palest blue. The creamy monochromatic walls create an open, airy space that seems to absorb and transform the natural light which is in abundance throughout the home. Approached with skill, experience and unquestionably good taste, the balance of old and new is expertly achieved in every room in the Engel’s renovated farmhouse. ❖ Above: The 45 foot lap pool is lined by boxwood hedges and weathered teak furniture and has great views of the home and gardens.
