ummertime means a change of pace, whether on vacation and traveling or enjoying being at home. This time of year, many of us look to summer reading as a way to relax. It is my hope that this Summer Seasons provides you with a relaxing diversion to interesting destinations, beautiful interiors and fresh ideas. In this issue, we travel with Judy Crowell to Laguna Beach to take in the California coast and we visit Vicksburg for historical perspective. Locally, we tour a home and garden I have long admired in Making a House a Home. We also view an interior designed by Suzy Grote that is ripe with color. We highlight fashion’s summer trends and favorite brands, literally from head to toe. In our weddings section, we enjoy two tropical themed destination weddings and splendid St. Louis celebrations. Much of Harrison's professional career has been devoted to mural work in private houses, and has included screens, panels, easel paintings, and watercolors. Primarily, his work has focused on decorative themes including chinoiseries, architectural subjects, and scenics, often with bird, animal, or ﬂoral motifs. Harrison started his career at the age of nineteen with a one-man exhibit at the upstairs gallery of Ross Thiele & Son Interiors in La Jolla, California, where he has lived for many years. All but one of the twenty four available watercolors were sold. Since that time, Harrison has worked primarily as a freelance artist. eep sea fishermen have never been considered fashion icons, but credit must be given where credit is due. The chic designs of Saint James apparel are based on the original Breton seaman’s sweater that was designed in 1850 for deep sea fishermen off the coast of Normandy. The sweaters were manufactured for seafaring merchants who traveled from Brittany to England to sell their goods and featured the now iconic, then innovative side button collar. The sweater became much like a uniform for the merchants and its distinct striped design made it easily identifiable when approaching ports. The unique sweater quickly became a cult item for

the inhabitants on the coast of France and eventually made its way inland. MORE THAN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT or Helen Kingsley Lynch “It just was.” That is how the newlywed explains what she describes as her, “more than love at ﬁrst sight,” meeting with Peter Wetzel Grote in November 2008. The bride, who goes by Kinglsey, met the man who would soon become her husband in New York City at a dinner party where the two were seated next to one another. What followed was a whirlwind romance that resulted with a proposal on the beaches of Nantucket complete with a lobster dinner that the groom, “had delivered to the beach!” Following their engagement the bride, who is from Greenwich, Connecticut and had been living in New York City, joined her husband in his hometown of St. Louis. In the midst of moving, starting a new job and acclimating herself to a new city, the bride was also planning her wedding. She describes her life during these months saying, “I was basically living out of a suitcase, as I would travel home on weekends for dress ﬁttings and meetings with my wedding planner and my Mom.” Hectic ? Yes. Impossible? No. The bride, with the help of planner Deanna Marano was able to plan an incredible weekend long celebration in Hobe Sound, Florida and she even found the perfect dress by Amsale that the bride was sold on immediately saying, “I put it on and I knew Photography by Lynne Brubaker Photography, Inc it was THE one! It was just what I wanted, and so comfortable!” The bride,

who is a graduate of Trinity College and Parsons School of Design, knew that she wanted something special and unique for her bridesmaid’s dresses so she turned to Lilly Pulitzer for the cheerful pink and white dresses and was thrilled with the results. The bride loved the pattern so much that she contacted a friend at Lilly Pulitzer to get some extra fabric so that her father, who the bride says, “is deﬁnitely a very classy and stylish guy,” could wear “panel pants” that featured the dress fabric on one pant leg. dinner at the Hobe Sound Yacht Club, the luau themed dinner the following night complete with fire throwers and live birds, or the game day where the bride’s guests battled the groom’s in various challenges and races, the families focused on providing their many out of town guests with an unforgettable weekend. The groom, who is a Marine, even honored his fellow Marines, many of whom were guests and some in the wedding party, with a flag ceremony that as the bride recalls, “gave everyone chills. It was just beautiful.” The weekend’s events culminated with the couple’s I do’s at Christ Memorial Chapel followed by a special fun filled reception at S E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E D I G I T A L .C O M

the Jupiter Island Club. The club was filled with gorgeous arrangements by florist Renny & Reed, a delicious cake by Sweet Tiers, and romantic lighting that set the tone for the celebratory evening where guests danced to the tunes that Bob Hardwick played late into the night. While photographer Lynne Brubaker, the couple’s photographer, caught the many special moments on film, the bride has no trouble remembering the special the day and the people who made it unforgettable, saying there are still moments that, “give me chills,” and much like the way her love at first sight for Peter, “just was,” she describes her unforgettable wedding weekend as, “just amazing!” ❖

OUR DREAM WEDDING

oung, in love, nearing graduation, applying to graduate school and planning a wedding. This was Marie Ann Tan Cuevas’ life in the months leading up to her beautiful fourth of July California set wedding to Charles Thomas Rawlings Heffern, son of Patricia and Christopher (Kit) E. Heffern. The daughter of Emecita T. Cramer and Vicente P. Cuevas III recalls these months as being, “absolutely crazy” but also enjoyable because as she says, “there has always been somewhat of a party planner inside of me,” and with the help of Bob Gail of Bob Gail Events she planned quite the party. The couple wed and celebrated their “I do’s” at the Calamigos Equestrian Center in Burbank California where the bride’s Stepfather Rene Arambulo walked her down the aisle. The couple chose the location because despite the bride’s original vision of wedding in a grand church, she found that, “whenever we went to what I thought I would like, it felt like it was someone else’s dream wedding, not mine and Charles’.” All of that changed when the couple visited Calamigos Equestrian Center however, and the bride realized that the location perfectly balanced their need for space to accommodate their large guest list but also would provide, “an intimate personal feel,” that reﬂected the newlywed’s romantic sensibilities. Celebrating what made their relationship special was paramount for the bride who explains her love for Charles saying, “the longer 34

I am with him, the more I learn about how I am and who I want to be. He brings out the most carefree parts of me.” Lighthearted elements were seen throughout the day and made it uniquely theirs. Whether it was the teddy bear grooms cake, which mother of the groom Patricia Heffern explained was a result of her son’s childhood nickname Charlie-Bear and his proposal, which entailed hiding a ring in a teddy bear for his bride, or the couple’s personalized vows they wrote for one another, the wedding truly bespoke the young couple’s unique spirit and devotion. The couple departed their wedding in a similarly beﬁtting fashion with a horse drawn carriage ride. The couple then departed on a two month long honeymoon celebration that commenced with a second reception in the Philippines, attended by both families and hosted by the bride’s father. The bride remembers this celebration as being very special because, “it was a chance for both of our families to celebrate our union together.”

AN ELEGANT WINTER WEDDING

roposals are known for being surprising, romantic in gesture and followed by copious amounts of joy. The planning that follows however doesn’t typically garner the same reputation, but Carole Halliday Bitting’s romantic winter wedding to William Peter Hendrickson might change all of that. With only six months to plan an elegant and intimate celebration, the bride who planned the big day primarily on her own, discovered that with every challenge came an unexpected and more often than not fortuitous solution. The daughter of Cynthia and Thomas Bitting who goes by Cary, wed her longtime beau, son of Dottye and Pete Hendrickson at the Shrine of St. Joseph church on February 13, a day that coincidentally proceeds the most romantic day of the year. While the bride didn’t want Valentine’s Day to dictate the theme of her wedding, the romantic holiday would alter some of her original nuptial visions. After consulting with her ﬂorist Jack Holmes of Petals by Irene, the bride was briefed on what Valentine’s Day translates to for ﬂorists: the busiest weekend of the year, and the hardest weekend of the year to get large quantities of blooms. So the bride, with the help of Holmes and Party Arts, found the perfect solution by utilizing large Phantom of the Opera 44

inspired candelabras which reflected off the many windows at St. Louis Country Club, the site of the newlyweds reception, and created a romantic glow that floral arrangements never could have, recalls the bride. The flowers weren’t the only unforeseen challenge the bride faced. Determined to wear her mother’s wedding dress, which she had custom made in an updated version of a dress that had been in the Bitting family for generations, Cary knew alterations were in order, as her mother is a whole six inches taller than the petite bride! After initially trying on the dress, the bride realized that while beautiful, “the dress overwhelmed me,” and so she sought the help of Connie of R&M Designs. Utilizing the fabric and the basic design features of her mother’s dress, Connie was able to combine aspects of the original dress with elements that reflected the young bride’s style, turning what at first was a disaster into a process full of collaboration. The bride recalls how, “with every fitting the dress would become more a reflection of me and my evolving ideas for the wedding.” With minimal time and the help of a wedding coordinator only two weeks prior to the big day, the young bride was able to enjoy not only her engagement, but the process of planning her perfect, “intimate and elegant winter wedding.”

AN ENGRAVED INVITATION

hen Elizabeth met Steve, she knew there was something special about him. Actually, a lot of things. The newlywed explains how Steve “is hardworking, funny, outgoing, and handsome and can always make me laugh.” These are the things that made Elizabeth Sanders vonDoerseten, the daughter of Mrs. Charles Byrne vonDoersten fall for Stephen Dale Bredbenner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lee Roderique. Luckily, Steve was just as enamored and proposed to the bride three days before Christmas by giving her an ornament that had the words “Will you marry me?” engraved on it. Immediately following the proposal, the newly engaged couple headed to Algonquin Golf Club, where the bride’s family was waiting to celebrate the occasion. Including family in the wedding was important to the young couple, and took on even more signiﬁcance with the passing of the bride’s father shortly before her wedding. The loss added meaning to many elements of the special day, which as the mother of the bride explains, they wanted it to be, “a happy time, a happy day, but one that also honored Chip,” the bride’s father. The bride’s dress was one such element. The dress was the ﬁrst

one she tried on, and although the bride tried others, she kept coming back to it. She recalls how, “I tried on 20 other dresses and ﬁnally had my dad come up to Saks and see me in it.” At the time she didn’t know how much this would mean to her, but now she explains the dress’ signiﬁcance saying, “Although my dad didn’t get to walk me down the aisle, he got to see me in my wedding dress and tell me how beautiful I looked. That is a memory I will always cherish and keep close to my heart.” With a very special dress, the bride’s planning continued with the help of wedding planner Barbara Hoover, who the mother of the bride says she “couldn’t have done it without!” Before they knew it, the wedding day was upon them. Following the couple’s nuptials at Saint Joseph’s Church, the newlyweds celebrated at The Saint Louis Club. Here the guests dined on tables with gorgeous arrangements by Ken Miesner, toasted and danced all night amidst white boas and confetti. Especially memorable for the new bride was a toast her husband gave that, “paid tribute to my dad,” and that as she says, “had everyone laughing and crying.” The day was one that was full of heart, and celebrated both the past and the happy future of the newlyweds.

John Wayne’s widow, Pilar, recalls spending 22 years there. “I miss it a lot”, she told me and daughters, Aissa and Marisa, told me of exploring the many beach coves, reached by walking over glistening tide pools and under volcanic arches. Still beckoning. Renowned for over 70 years as an artist’s haven, two of the most ex traordinary presentations of art in the world occur in Laguna Beach. The Festival of Arts, highlighting the beauty of plein air art, a French expression, “in the open air”, or paint ing outdoors in the ﬂeeting light. Paintings capturing the very essence of California. Situated in mid-Mississippi, a day’s drive from St. Louis is Vicksburg National Military Park. 1,550 acres of rolling hills, magnificent trees and over 1,300 scattered monuments commemorating the Siege of Vicksburg, a critical turning point for Union forces, ensuring control of the Mississippi River and helping to achieve survival of the Union. Over 17,000 Union soldiers are buried here, some 13,000 unknown, making it the largest number of Union interments of any national cemetery in the U.S. One of the world’s most accurately marked battlefields, it is a park everyone should experience. For 47 hellish days, in one of the largMissouri est, bloodiest, most significant actions of Memorial the Civil War, Union troops led by General Ulysses S. Grant bombarded Vicksburg, finally forcing General John C. Pemberton to surrender the Confederate troops on July 4, 1863. Grant’s own words perhaps provide 54

the key to their unyielding victory, “In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins.” A relieved President Abraham Lincoln announced, “The Father of Waters again goes unvexed to the sea.” For 78 years afterwards, Vicksburg refused to celebrate the 4th of July, until 1941 when the U.S. Congress declared Independence Day a federal paid holiday. Celebrating its history are life-like murals gracing the waterfront, in view of the riverboat Casino. Murals depicting among other events, the 1906 dedication of the Illinois Monument modeled after the Roman Pantheon and Jefferson Davis at his home in Brierﬁeld, being informed that he had been elected president of the Confederate States of America. One of the National Military Parks most interesting sites is the USS Cairo, the Union’s ironclad gunboat struck by an electronically detonated mine in the Yazoo

River, north of Vicksburg. Within 12 minutes it sunk, then sat for over 100 years, mired in mud and silt, at the bottom of the river until in 1977 it was recovered and partially reconstructed on a concrete foundation in the park. This most horrendous of wars which pitted brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor cost the lives of 620,000, exceeding the nation’s loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam. It could have been called The Boys’ War, with more than 2,000,000 Federal soldiers aged 21 or under, 800,000 under 17 and 300 under the age of 13. With no penicillin, no steriliza-

tion and rations of beans, hardtack, salt pork and coffee, these young boys were lucky to live to outgrow their blue or gray wool trousers. Dozens of Civil War “ﬁrsts” included: a workable machine gun, a successful submarine, a snorkel breathing device, the income tax, “Taps”, a cigarette tax, the Medal of Honor and battle photography. Neither Northern nor Southern, Missouri was in an intractable position, sending more men to war (199.111) in proportion to her population than any other state. Missouri, with its star on both ﬂags, contributed 27 Union units and 15 Confederate units to the Vicksburg campaign, losing a total of 27,000 soldiers over the

course of the war. A massive Missouri monument stands where two opposing Missouri regiments clashed in battle. Admirably, it is the only monument in the park honoring troops of both sides. What a sad, sad affair, the Civil War, when countrymen obliterated each other with everything from cavalry sabers and bow knives to muskets and grenades. This hauntingly beautiful park is a living reminder of warâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horriďŹ c cost. A stanza from a poem written by Francis Miles Finch perhaps says it best. 58

here are many things which affect the feel of a room, but perhaps the most impactful are color and texture. When interior decorator Suzy Grote was approached by a male client to redecorate his home, she utilized several interesting color combinations and textural elements to create a space suited for a man, but that was not overly masculine. So Grote balanced the needs of her client, who is an avid hunter, with her own sophisticated design sensibility to create a home that is rich with intricate and thoughtful details, but also bespeaks of the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interests and personality. In the spacious living room, Grote chose a soothing color scheme of taupe, cream and canary yellow to create a lively and welcoming room that mixes differing textural elements to add depth and interest. Whether it is the paneled walls that were painted a pale blue grey creating a cool backdrop against the warm colors that inhabit the rest of the space or the interesting accent fabrics like the mushroom brown, geometrically embroidered table skirt by

Kravet Couture, an exclusive from the Michael Berman Collection, the rooms color and texture add interest to the large space. Grote achieved similar results in the sitting room just off the entryway where grass cloth wall coverings added interest to the small space that reﬂected the interests of the homeowner, displaying his zebra rug over the parquet ﬂoors in a tasteful safari themed room. The sun room also embraces the tropical, with lots of greenery and a diamond patterned sisal rug. hat makes a house a home? It’s a question that homeowner’s, architects and interior designers alike all ask at some point. It is also a question that comes equipped with innumerable answers, but for these sophisticated and well traveled homeowners the formula for this loaded question wasn’t all that difﬁcult. With the help of an expert team, the homeowners were able 72

to build their perfect dream house; make that dream home, from the ground up. When brieﬂy relocating to Memphis, Tennessee the homeowners, who had always lived in classic old homes full of one of kind charm, found themselves living in a new house. Worried that the new house would lack the charm of older homes, the homeowner turned to her good friend and accomplished interior

Located directly off the entryway, the living room is ﬁnished in pale hues of blue, yellow and pink that create a restful and delicate space. With lush raw silk drapes, and velvet upholstered chair and sofa, the room is full of rich textural interest. The natural light which ﬂoods in the room from four large windows casts beautiful light on the barely pink walls, which add depth and warmth to the elegant space.

Turning once again to their friend Lanham for design advice, the couple sought out award winning architect Yong Pak, of Pak Heydt & Associates in Atlanta, Georgia to build their traditional dream home. Together with their team of experts, including Ken Miller who assisted with planning the gardens, the home was designed with input from all parties, evolving along the way into The wonderfully spacious dining room done in soothing shades of pale green with taupe accents, expertly displays the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collections in a pair of built in shelves. 74

Decorating the home was not a challenge for the couple who had acquired much of their furniture, not to mention impressive collections of art and antiques over the years. One of the homeowners loves to collect silver, while the other is drawn to smaller accents like limoges boxes and decorative accents, both of which are seen throughout the home. Utilizing much of the furniture they already had, Lanham, their longtime

the home that stands today. Things like the old brick used to construct the home whose mortar wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cleanly applied, but allowed to seep out from each brick creating an aged look, or the one of kind stairwell leading from the living room upstairs that was custom built from a piece of antique iron that had been a door at a bank from Fellenz, give the newly built home one of a kind charm.

for adoration and relaxation. Every room has a view to the impeccable garden space that is complete with a Koi pond, shade, sun and herb gardens, and even a covered patio, that the homeowner simply loves saying, “We eat outside every night from May to October.” The traditional and expertly manicured gardens reﬂect the quietude that envelops the home the instant one pulls in the pebbled drive, lined with exquisite Kousa Dogwoods and enormous boxwood hedges. A retreat from the outside world, the homeowners, together with an expert team was able to construct a space that, from the inside out is not simply a house, but a home. ❖

Manicured hedges surround the rose garden that is ďŹ&#x201A;anked with two holly trees. The Koi pond, complete with statue creates a gorgeous focal point for the space and is surrounded by dark pebbles creating an interesting contrast with the lush green garden. The back of the yard has a stone wall lined with lush blooming hydrangeas.
