PUBLISHER'S NOTE

e all look forward to summer. One of my favorite beginning of summer rituals is opening the pool and bringing out the pool furniture. There are some who enjoy a cool pool for a quick swim and others who insist on a warm pool for a day of sunbathing. I understand that the ideal temperature for a pool is 84˚. In this issue, we feature two pools — one on a rooftop in Beverly Hills in our travel article to the Jewel of Los Angeles and the other, surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens in Haute Horticulturist. Our fashion department is filled with the latest swimwear, sandals and sunglasses. We also introduce you to local designer Amy Johnson, who is excited to announce her collection is now offered at Valerie Mills Fine Apparel, see our Chic Boutique. The St. Louis weather cooperated "for a magical day and night in May" in our wedding feature A Fairy Tale Wedding at Grant's Farm. In our Homes & Interiors section we bring you back indoors with Pattern and Color Are Used to Create a Sophisticated Cottage — this well appointed home in Old Town Clayton is great inspiration. The On The Market advertising section takes you on a house tour of available real estate. Please enjoy our Summer Issue and join us in anticipating future Seasons. JUSTIN S. NANGLE Publisher

very now and then an estate that previously only existed in the imagination becomes a reality. #35 Squires Lane is that place.

As you travel down the tree-lined, private road leading to the over sixteen acre property, a feeling of being on a secluded island ensues. The luscious park-like setting sprinkled with wrought-iron benches seems to stretch to infinity. In addition to the six-bedroom, six-and-a-half bath main dwelling, the estate includes a new five-car, heated garage crowned with slate roof; guest/pool house with full mini kitchen; in-ground pool; and exquisite gardens designed by a New York architect. Horses and riding trails complete the idyllic environmental tapestry. For pricing and more information, call Joan Schnoebelen or Megan Rowe, 314.569.1177.

You read that right. I’m here to tell you that it’s time, once and for all, to stop exercising. I stopped three years ago, at least in the traditional sense. Let me explain. For many people, me included, “exercise” at a typical fitness center doesn’t work. It takes loads of time to receive any alleged “benefits,” which often turn out to be such small changes that you can barely measure them. The typical workout is also tedious. It requires you to put on work-out clothes and spend countless hours going to places where you are forced to sweat in front of people you don’t know – or worse, people you DO know – after waiting in line for the privilege. Then there’s the worry that at any moment you might fall off the stationary bicycle at mile 7,982 and die of boredom. That’s why most of us give up long before our membership expires. But no fitness regimen will do any lasting good if you don’t do it. You need something you can stick with, something that works with your schedule. Something that won’t bore or injure you.

The even better news: there’s a place in St. Louis where you can safely build strength this way under the watchful eyes of a staff that includes physical therapists, a registered nurse, exercise physiologists, kinesiologists and professional trainers. Called 20 Minutes To Fitness, it’s for people of all ages and fitness levels. With locations in Clayton and Chesterfield, it offers a solution that is so efficient, takes so little time and renders such dramatic results, you will stick with it, as I have since March 2006. In all honesty, I remain totally flabbergasted by the results I continue to achieve at 20 Minutes. I’ve lost 20 pounds, gone from a size 10 to a 4, am stronger than I was as a high school cheerleader and have just as much energy. That I am also finally doing something that protects my health is, frankly, a side benefit beyond my wildest imagining. If it requires any real measure of discipline, doing the right thing has never been my strong point.

The truth is, most of us don’t really want to exercise as much as we want the benefits that exercise delivers: We want to be physically fit. We want to slow the aging process and lower our risk of disease. We want to feel good when we look in the mirror.

Coming into to the program, I had merely hoped to get in a little better shape. Instead, I’m in the best shape of my life and feel like I’ve reversed the aging process.

What we really want, in other words, is MUSCLE. Muscle, it turns out, is the body’s master switch, the gatekeeper for long-term health. Doctors now believe that, next to quitting smoking, the single most important thing adults need to do to live longer, healthier lives is to build strength.

I want to share my success with 20 Minutes because I think it can be an important, healthy, life-changing experience for many kinds of people – those who are too busy to exercise, or think they’re too old, or too out of shape, have too many medical problems, or just plain hate exercising.

The good news is, you can build muscle without exercising – at least in the traditional sense. Thanks to scientifically based strength-building methods, it is now possible to achieve in one 20minute session what might otherwise require three hours or more a week.

If that sounds like you, I have just one thing to say: Exercise is dead. Long live 20 Minutes To Fitness. Betty Cuniberti, age 50-something

KayOss Local designer creates unique clothing out of KayOss — By Linda Mantle

“I

always knew I would have my own business,” says local fashion designer Amy Johnson. She didn’t know exactly what it would be, but she had a name: KayOss, derivative of chaos, a state of disorder and confusion. For Johnson, chaos is a good thing: You need the chaos, but if you focus and plan with purpose and passion, you’ll navigate through the muddle and mayhem to some prophetic outcome. In her case, it’s KayOss Designs, Johnson’s clothing design business and the line of women’s clothes she has been creating and producing since 2006. “If you’re doing what you should be doing and follow your heart, you’ll find a path through the chaos,” she says convincingly. A student of technical design with a degree in civil engineering and environmental design, the tall, statuesque designer says she never felt like that was THE thing. Fortunately, she listened to the creative side of her brain and continued her education. Drawn to the arts--sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass, jewelry making, photography-- “I pretty much tried everything,” she says. “I was searching for that thing that you’re passionate about, and it was never engineering,” Johnson says pointedly. It was in Florence, Italy, where she attended the Lorenzo de Medici school and The Fashion Design Lab, that she

20

serendipitously found her fascination with fabrics. “I love the feel of the fabric,” she says simply. The current KayOss line features skirts, dresses, fun tops and shruggies. Her design concept... “...is to be noticed. I want my clothes to be eyecatching; whether it’s the movement, design, color or texture, something about it catches your eye,” Johnson explains. “It also has to feel good whether you’re sitting or walking.” Johnson describes her designs as classic, not over-the-top or trendy. “It’s a classic piece in your closet. That’s the engineering in me; I like things to last,” she says. A look at the KayOss line reveals couture fabrics creatively crafted with attention to detail and fit, flirty without the fuss, large prints and color. But, not over-the-top doesn’t mean no WOW factor. From her very first pieces, Johnson has infused her clothes with energy and a personality that make people sit up, take note and say, “Where did you get that?” KayOss Designs began as a sideline while Johnson continued working in engineering sales and marketing to support herself. By Spring 2008, KayOss was ready to debut and Johnson was one of several local designers to showcase her work at St. Louis Fashion Week. That exposure and her commitment and determination brought her enough recognition and

sales to devote full time to KayOss by fall 2008. In St. Louis, KayOss can be found at Vie and Valerie Mills Fine Apparel, among other upscale boutiques around the country as well as online at www.kayossdesigns.com. Johnson will show her line at New Orleans Fashion Week in September and while she pursues other outlets, she has based her company in St. Louis, where she finds numerous resources and appreciates a burgeoning fashion scene. “I want to grow here, I want it to happen here,” she says amidst the tools of her trade in her Central West End boutique/studio. Happening it is, thanks to Johnson’s resolve and equanimity that lead her through the chaos every day. “Everything about this was so meant to be. It was being patient and letting it all unfold.”

ew inspiration, new horizons: the Bentley GMT is an entirely original chronograph, starting with its bold design. A genuine wrist sculpture, it has been drawn in a single sweep, seamlessly integrating the wristband into the case and thus resulting in an attractive and original asymmetrical lug design. The black rubber strap lends an extremely contemporary touch. The finely crafted dial is adorned with totalizer rims inspired by Bentley dashboards. A born traveller, the GMT brings the world to the wrist thanks to an ingenious multiple timezone display system. It is equipped with a red triangle-tipped additional hour hand performing one full turn of the dial in 24 hours. The pushpiece integrated into the left side of the case services to move the hand forwards in one-hour increments in order to display the second timezone – while distinguishing between day-time and night-time hours. The rotating inner bezel bearing the names of 24 cities provides at-aglance readoff of the time in all zones around the globe – from New York to Bangkok, from London to Tokyo, and from Abu Dhabi to Sydney. The Bentley GMT is manufactured in steel as well as in an extremely precious red gold version. Both models are designed to be teamed with either the Speed bracelet or the GMT rubber strap exclusive to this chronograph. Available at Simons Jewelers, 725-8888 and Clarkson Jewelers, 636-227-2006. A FAIRY TALE WEDDING AT GRANT’S FARM he Busch family home (known affectionately to the family as the “Big House”) at Grant’s Farm, built in 1911 by August A. Busch, Sr. as a country estate, was the setting for the May 9th wedding of Elizabeth Lilly Busch (Lacey) Hermann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew David Stephen Busch and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ringen Hermann, Jr. to Mr. Robert Alan Landsness, son of Mrs. Peter Sabin and the late Mr. G. David Landsness. As the theme for her wedding, the bride chose the fragile and aromatic lily-of-the-valley, in remembrance of her paternal grandmother and namesake, Lilly Busch Hermann, and to recall spring days spent picking the lily blossoms in the garden of her maternal grandmother, Judith Heil Crowell. The tiny bell shaped flowers showed up every-

where from save-the-date cards and gold edged wedding invitations to the simple elegance of the wedding cake by Sugaree. The beautiful bridal Lilly needed no gilding…nor did the commanding “Big House”. Nonetheless, among those gilding the lily were: Ken Miesner and John Sullivan providing their legendary floral magic; Monique Lhuillier of Melrose Place in Los Angeles who created the bride’s Alencon lace gown; J. Crew bridesmaids dresses; catering by Aramark; Traube who erected a sparkling, clear tent, treating dinner guests to a romantic, leisurely view of the luminous full moon rising in the east; all pulled together by wedding coordinator, Josie Littlepage of Cosmopolitan Events and Nicole Iannazzo of Grant’s Farm. In recognition of this momentous occasion, the wedding of the great, great, great granddaughter of Adolphus Busch and the great granddaughter of August A. (Gussie) Busch, Jr., the main gates, ceremoniously wreathed, were opened to welcome wedding guests to the home where Gussie and his wife, Gertrude (Trudy) Buholzer Busch raised their seven children. Situated on 281 acres and founded and farmed by Ulysses S. Grant in the 1850s, the “Big House” commands a panoramic view of this rolling land, preserved as a living symbol of the Busch family’s love for animals and Anheuser-Busch’s commitment to S E A S O N S M A G A Z I N E D I G I T A L .C O M

preserve the heritage and traditions of Anheuser-Busch and Grant’s Farm. Like a princess in a fairytale, the bride, seated in a flower bedecked antique Russian carriage, was driven to the chapel by her step-father, Andy Busch, handling the reins of two magnificent Oberlanders, their manes painstakingly braided with flowers. Her father, Bob Hermann, seated next to the bride, was ready to take his daughter’s arm and escort her down the aisle to the ceremony outside the charming, Swiss inspired chapel built in 1959 as a gift to Trudy Busch from her husband, Gussie. Following the ceremony, the newly married Lacey and Rob Landsness made their way up the hill to their gala tented reception and the music of the Steve Schankman Orchestra and Charles Glenn Band. Former manager of Grant’s Farm, Andy Busch, reminisced on this very special day, saying, “Since my father, August A. (Gussie) Busch, Jr. opened this incredible place to the public in 1954, over 28 million visitors, four generations 32

of families, have enjoyed Grant’s Farm, all compliments of Anheuser-Busch and the Busch family. My father believed in his famous slogan, ‘making friends is our business’. Grant’s Farm keeps that tradition and heritage alive.” Grant’s Farm, its animal shows, tram rides, Tier Garten, Deer Park, exotic animals, Bauernhof, Clydesdale stables and so much more, is rated one of the top attractions in the country and continues to welcome the public. (www.grantsfarm.com) For one magical day and night in May, this St. Louis jewel belonged to a bride and groom.

MAKE IT MONOGRAMMED By Diana Losciale

he answer is: Something for the bed, bath or table. The question is: What gift is always correct to give the wedding couple? While firm rules on gift-giving fade, our love of luxury persists, and Matouk has majored in luxury since its founding in 1929. Known for monogramming even its shower curtains with stunning results, Matouk linens go quickly from great-to-give to must-have. “For weddings and showers? These are the perfect gifts,” said Angela Carter at Amelia’s, also recommending the line’s Modal blankets, cushy towels and face cloths, and especially the camel-color throw.

Monograms, always classic, always timeless, are a Matouk hallmark. All work is hand-stitched. Choose from various embroidered styles and the availability of thousands of thread colors, which can be matched to any swatch, paint chip or idea, noted Kina Shapleigh at Sallie Home. “People don’t want generic colors.” Besides unbeatable softness that does not diminish, the bath line also offers a sumptuous color range, from white to dark chocolate, and so much in between. Meanwhile don’t forget to monogram the plushy robes. Joanna Dulle at Edwin Pepper Interiors noted that while it was possible to have hand-stitched design status and

quality without going overboard in the budget category, Matouk remains washable and wears beautifully. Give Matouk as a gift? Yes. But get some for yourself and use it every day, the bath and linen whisperers say.

The Golden Triangle. The celebrated 90210 zip code. The jewel of Los Angeles. In this sun-drenched, geographical slice of pie, the rich tradition and history of star- studded Beverly Hills surround you. Nowhere is the return to Hollywood’s Golden Age more embodied than at the newly opened Montage. Combining Spanish, Italian and Moroccan aesthetics, this ultra-luxury hotel has every amenity imaginable…and then some. A mini-library in each suite is filled with a marvelous array of inviting books: Raymond Chandler mysteries; Alfred Hitchcock biographies; Chanel and Her World; Buster Keaton, Hollywood: Then and Now; and Grace Kelly: A Life in Pictures, (to name just a few). HOUSE & GARDEN GUIDE NEW TO LADUE “High-end designers have incorporated embroidered monograms for decades,” says Edward M. Tashjian, VP of Marketing for Century Furniture, which has long offered custom monogramming on throw pillows, settees, and chair backs. “It is a sign of distinction and a flourish of personal style. Monograms are for people who appreciate the details of fine tailoring.” There are two basic types of monogramming, he explains: initials and medallions. Initials reflect an understated elegance.

Medallions are even more expressive, demonstrating panache and personality. “The biggest style trend today isn’t contemporary or traditional—it’s personal,” adds Tashjian. “Century has always sought to help people express themselves through customized, personalized furniture. Monograms take that a step further.” Visit JOY TRIBOUT INTERIOR DESIGN — NEW TO LADUE 314-692-9888, 9719 Clayton Road.

That’s what one Ladue couple did when they moved from their expansive, traditional, two-story brick home to a three-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath two-story cottage in Old Town Clayton. Their favorite things were “renovated” with new upholstery, right along with the bathrooms and kitchen. For expertise on blending the old with the new and achieving a natural flow of pattern and color throughout the house, they tapped the talents of interior designer Marda Gatewood. “My client wanted a sophisticated

adult cottage,” says Gatewood, noting that the previous owner had created a replica of an 18th century house. “It was very well done and it’s always been a charming home, but the new owner wanted to personalize it.” Gatewood says she worked predominantly with existing pieces reupholstering almost everything and adding some new sofas where needed. “The owner had a lot of beautiful things that meant a lot to her and we kept all of those, which makes it so personal,” Gatewood says.

The first step was to develop a plan. Gatewood began the design process taking inventory of the “keeper” pieces. “We knew we would keep the table, a chest of drawers, side chairs. I started trying to find one fabric she absolutely loved upon which we could build,” Gatewood says. “Our color scheme evolved and we were able to develop everything else.” That one fabulous fabric adorns the Charles Stewart sofa in the living room. A large Scalamandre print with rose and green hues graces a black background and sets the common tone for floral and other color motifs throughout the house. “We reupholstered her chairs in Manuel Canovas fabric adding bouillon fringe by Robert Allen,” Gatewood notes. Fabric covering the wing chair by Brunschwig & Fils is complimentary in color and pattern. A Stark carpet covers the conversation area, and, Gatewood says, “We offset all the color with neutral walls and beautiful white woodwork.” Gatewood, who says she loves to work with color, was delighted to discover that her client “has absolutely no fear of color; she was a joy to work with.” When choosing fabric, Gatewood says it was important that the colors flow from room to room. The green and black floral Stark dining room carpet brings in the color concept from the living room. Dining room chairs with Scalamandre plaid upholstery compliment the Scalamandre tone-on-tone striped wallpaper in a subtly vibrant rose pink. Upstairs, similar tones appear as faux painted walls in green strie with bedding and window treatments by Thibaut. Several items...the headboard, and bench at the foot of the bed, along with a chaise lounge in an adjacent step-up sitting room all remained unchanged. “I took all the

Above, the green and black floral Stark carpet carries the color motif into the dining room, where chairs are covered in a Scalamandre plaid fabric. The wallpaper is a striped toneon-tone rose pink by Scalamandre. Below, the corner wing chair is covered with fabric by Brunschwig & Fils and the view from the living room into the dining room shows the symmetry of complimentary colors and patterns.

In the upstairs master bedroom, faux painted walls in green strie offer a pale backdrop for bedding and window treatments by Thibaut. Gatewood added the antelope patterned carpet in both areas.

things she had and loved and found fabrics to work with them,” Gatewood says. In the master bath, she used the Thibaut fabric from the bedroom for wallpaper. “Some people start with the rug and work upward; I always like to start with fabric and work down. Rugs are the last thing we did,” Gatewood says. That’s because Gatewood is a selfproclaimed fabric addict. “I love to look at fabric, work with it; I love to put different schemes together,” she says. Marda Gatewood Design is the threeyear-old result of a longtime passion for decorating. Formerly, Gatewood owned The Great Cover-Up, which began as a wallpaper store but which

she expanded to offer fabric, interior design and window treatments representing luxurious, upscale lines. When she sold that business to Sunshine Draperies, she opened her own design business. “I have always renovated, built, decorated,” says the 30year veteran of real estate sales. Initially, Gatewood likes to get to know her client, their vision and taste. “I enjoy it when the customer has beautiful pieces of their own that reflect their family and tradition,” she says. Then she can add and adjust all the pieces to fit. She is a big fan of classic design. “I don’t believe in fads or using the latest ‘in’ colors. Elegance and simplicity are eternal,” she says.

The Thibaut bedding fabric reappears as wallpaper in the master bath.

James Doyle Design Associates, LLC: “Our designs incorporate aspects of traditional design with a modern aesthetic and our work is characterized by strong geometry, bold structural forms and clean symmetry.” Internationally renown landscape designer James Doyle has spent the past 15 years perfecting a skillful incorporation of landscape design with horticultural expertise. A master horticulturist, he studied design with Robin Williams (the designer, not the actor), which heightened his perception of how vegetation can interact with architecture to create measured beauty in its natural surroundings. Doyle’s gardens come to life with a distinctive style, carefully nurtured in collaboration with his clients, architects and consultants to ensure a resplendent result. The young owners of this residence wanted their landscaping to mirror their modern lifestyle. The result is a harmonious fusion of landscape and architecture. Doyle gets much of his inspiration from his travels and viewing the exquisite gardens of Europe. Check out James Doyle Design Associates at www.jdda.com.

To provide a child-friendly play space, the designer added a flat lawn beyond the sloping back property, incorporating new retention walls into the landscape plan to create a level lawn in the eastern portion of the property. Ligustrum hedging delineates the lawn from the adjoining pool area.

At the front of the home an allee of six inch caliper Tilia cordata trees and boxwood parterres add formality to the circular courtyard. Sheared shrubs at the main entrance are designed to mimic the strong architectural element of the home’s turret.

A private courtyard with a water feature offers privacy and can be enjoyed from within or outside the new pool house, which has doors that fully open front and back. The pool and pool house can be viewed through a custom designed wrought iron gate and fence. Large urns were chosen to add seasonal color.

The still life oil painting dates back to the 1600's.

Almost 1,500 square feet of new patio was added to the rear of the house to tie in to the addition of a billiard room. A stainless steel water feature was designed as a focal point for the rear patios and recreational room. An outdoor fireplace completes new outdoor entertaining spaces.
