Preparing Students for College and Life
Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent secondary school with a mission to prepare our students to participate effectively in modern society. We, therefore, seek a diversified student body and faculty. We offer a demanding college-preparatory curriculum integrating the arts and emphasizing a global perspective. We utilize the resources of our urban environment to extend out classrooms, to enhance our programs, and to engage our students in public service. Most of all, we seek to graduate motivated young men and women of talent and integrity who are prepared to contribute productively to a changing world.

THANK YOU Dear Friends of Seattle Academy, Seattle Academy’s 2014-2015 Annual Report reflects an eventful school year filled with memorable experiences and successes for our students, faculty, and school. The past year included construction of the STREAM Building, which broke ground in June 2014 and was complete just 13 months later. The STREAM’s purpose-built science facilities and learning commons are Phase 1 in an extraordinary vision for campus transformation. Phase 2 brings a new home for our Middle School to the 12th Avenue block, to open in fall 2018. This new Cardinal Union Building will include larger classrooms, a learning commons, an additional gymnasium, and a roof-top playfield. Seattle Academy would not be where it is today without the remarkable support of this community, and that support helps pave the road to where we are going tomorrow. Thank you! Our School’s mission is to prepare young people for success in college and life. The foundation of this success is the self-reliance that is forged through the acquisition of skills, habits of mind, and habits of action developed through challenges met and overcome. Our Culture of Performance activates the development of such skills and habits, and inspires the courage to master new challenges. In 2014-2015, students engaged in countless moments of action, creativity, exploration, and collaboration. In sixth grade, the “Genius Project” challenged students to deliver a project designed to make a change in the world and to “make someone else’s life awesome.” Drawing on their burgeoning skills in research, writing, and presentation, students completed projects with local and global reach in areas including health, education, and the environment. Eighth graders mastered the Seattle Challenge, navigating the urban landscape and performing acts of service at 34 local agencies. Tenth grade students took on the Soap Project, utilizing market research, laboratory testing, branding, and marketing plans culminating in presentations to a professional panel. Seniors honed their skills in the real world through Senior Project internships at organizations including UW Psychology Lab, Boeing, Sustainable Fisheries, Fred Hutch, Seattle Biomedical Research, and others. For many students, their performance led to offers of employment. In Athletics, 57 sports teams (a record number!) took to the playing fields and courts to represent SAAS. In 2014-2015, teams won a total of eight Emerald City League Championships and eight all-time school records were broken, including five in Track and Field, two in Ultimate, and one in Tennis. In the Arts, exuberant Middle and Upper School students treated audiences to 42 performances. These shows included theatrical productions, and presentations by vocal, instrumental, and dance ensembles. The Onions won their second consecutive first-place finish at the 2015 Reno Jazz Festival, and the SAAS Photography Program placed 4th out of 70 schools in the Washington State Photography Competition. The Outdoor and Travel program engaged students on 17 trips and multiple class retreats. These shared experiences taught them skills to function in nature, within a foreign culture, and in service-related environments. Whether traversing the sidewalks of Seattle or Paris, the banks of the Bayou or Yukon River, the ruins of ancient Rome or the temples of India, our students stretched beyond their comfort zones, broadened their perspectives, and developed new habits of self-reliance, cooperation, leadership, and teamwork. As a school and a community, our journey so far has gone to exciting places and the destinations ahead are even more thrilling. On behalf of Seattle Academy, thank you for sharing the journey and for giving generously to make great things possible along the way. With Appreciation,
Joe Puggelli, Head of School

SAAS IN THE CITY
SAAS in the City…it’s not an auction, it’s a party, and what a party it was! On January 24, 2015, over 450 guests attended SAAS in the City to celebrate Seattle Academy’s faculty and students. Lively student performances were complemented by remarks from Head of School, Joe Puggelli, other faculty, and alumni. Together, in one evening, donors contributed $200,000 to the Faculty Development Fund to support our faculty as they develop new programs, fuel curricular innovations, and create a learning environment that cultivates 21st century skills. Thank you to the following donors for their contributions. SAAS RISING CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Seattle Academy thanks all donors who have donated to SAAS Rising: A Campaign for Campus Transformation. These gifts support our bold vision to unite the Middle and Upper Schools on the 12th Ave Block. With generous donor support, the new STREAM Building came to fruition in fall 2015. Next, we focus our efforts on the second SAAS Rising project, the new Cardinal Union Building. Cardinal Union will be a permanent home for our Middle School that would add more purpose-built learning spaces, a second gymnasium, and an outdoor play field. The STREAM Building and new Cardinal Union Building are spaces where innovative hands-on, creative and entrepreneurial learning will thrive.

“When it comes to giving, SAAS keeps it real. No one expects families to give beyond what they can, but encourages every family to give something. People before us gave, and now we have a great school. We need to do the same for kids that come after us.” SAAS RISING CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

EE FORD FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP GRANT “There aren’t too many daring and courageous schools like SAAS out there. No gift is commensurate enough...but every gift enables and enriches.” E E FOR D FOUN DAT ION LEA DE R SH IP G RA N T The Edward E. Ford Foundation, whose mission is to encourage and improve secondary education by independent schools in the United States, awarded SAAS an Educational Leadership Grant to combine the Innovations program with other current offerings in Arts, Sustainability, Robotics, and Programming in order to begin developing The Seattle Academy Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The grant from the foundation was matched by several generous families. In recent years Innovations Courses have partnered with real-world organizations including Crosscut, Premera, Washington State Health Advocacy Association (WASHAA), Post Prison Education Program, and Nube9 to provide students with real-world problems to solve using skills and collaboration honed during coursework. Seattle Academy continues to expand Innovations courses and partnerships with businesses and nonprofits in the Seattle Area.
