DEAR FRIENDS, It is with enormous gratitude that we present to you this report outlining our community’s 2020-21 philanthropic support for Seattle Academy, and the investments we made with your generous gifts to innovate and create the best possible experience for our students and community during this pandemic year.
an additional $1 million in financial aid for families affected by COVID-19; fully fund the technology upgrades needed for effective remote learning; retrofit our campus to meet COVID-19 health and safety standards; and advance our critical diversity, equity and inclusion work.
We began the school year in the midst of a global pandemic, economic headwinds and social upheaval. Despite those uncertainties and challenges, the SAAS community rose to the challenges.
We are deeply appreciative of the many volunteers who helped us maintain our connections to one another, advanced our fundraising efforts and celebrated our faculty, staff and students. Their gifts of time were critical in a year when we couldn’t be together.
In the classroom, students adapted to Zoom classes, hybrid classes and a return to campus—demonstrating a remarkable resilience. Faculty worked tirelessly to innovate and connect. Student-athletes played on despite shortened seasons, and having to compete while wearing masks. Student artists created, collaborated, performed and inspired. Throughout it all, parents and family members partnered with SAAS to wrestle with complex problems, implement creative solutions, to take care of each other in as many ways as we could, and to advance our mission to question, imagine and create in order to contribute boldly to a changing world. Our community benefited greatly from the more than $7.6 million in philanthropic support for Seattle Academy this year. With these commitments, we not only transitioned our education and extracurricular offerings to a fully remote experience in the fall and a hybrid model in the spring, we were also able to keep our community together by offering
As we head into a new school year, we know our community is strong and our fiscal outlook is sound. To everyone who supported SAAS this year—parents, alumni families, faculty and staff, grandparents and friends—please know that your contributions this year have made a lasting impact on the lives of our students, and helped to bring our mission to life in this exceedingly difficult year. We are deeply grateful. With Appreciation,
Rob Phillips Head of School

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF COVID-19 With COVID-19 highly active in the Puget Sound region and vaccines still on the horizon, Seattle Academy began the 2020-21 school year fully online. Keeping best practices of remote instruction in mind and based on feedback from teachers, students, and families, the Fall 2020 academic schedule prioritized a predictable and meaningful weekly routine with abundant student access to teachers and one another. To meet the challenge of delivering a SAAS education remotely, the school made significant investments in web-based meeting tools, hardware, and software needed for both students and faculty, as well as supplies needed for students to complete their assignments at home. As COVID-19 cases surged through the fall and into January 2021, our fully remote schedule continued while SAAS leadership continually updated the Return to Campus plan based on insights from state and local governments and public health authorities. During this time, SAAS offered an optional program called Remote on Campus to meet the needs of families challenged by the remote learning schedule due to family or work responsibilities. This supervised, study hall-like program allowed students to be on campus, in a central location, while they followed their online class schedule. To keep faculty, staff, and students safe during this time, SAAS offered free COVID-19 testing on a weekly basis. As post-holiday coronavirus cases began to subside, Seattle Academy introduced “Retreats on Campus” in February, which invited students to return to campus by grade level in socially distant pods of 10. This was followed by the introduction of a fully hybrid model, which allowed students back on campus in physically distanced classrooms

by division on a rotating weekly basis. The hybrid schedule also allowed for students to participate in some extracurricular activities, such as sports. To provide additional support for faculty and students, 59 classroom assistants were hired for the duration of the school year. These CAs not only managed classrooms where students were engaged with their teachers via Zoom, but they also assisted faculty with preparing lessons and materials, and monitored health and safety guidelines on campus. As vaccine availability increased and COVID-19 indicators in the region began to fall, Seattle Academy announced that after Spring Break students of both divisions would be allowed back on campus together.
On Monday, April 26, almost 14 months since SAAS closed its campus, all Middle and Upper School students—the heart of Seattle Academy—were welcomed back for full-time, in-person instruction. We extend our gratitude to everyone who supported all of our students this year, regardless of whether those students returned to campus in the spring or remained in remote learning. There are countless staff and faculty, SAAS families, and members of our extended community who worked tirelessly this year. We are deeply thankful for their efforts to maintain the health and safety of our community, foster both in-person and online connections, and provide as many opportunities as possible for students to experience a SAAS education.

PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT FOR FINANCIAL AID As the demand for a Seattle Academy education has increased, so has the need for financial aid. Over the last five years, SAAS has awarded grants to more students and provided larger amounts of financial aid to realize our continued quest to build and foster a diverse and inclusive community. Prior to COVID-19, more than one in five Seattle Academy students received some form of financial aid, with an average grant of $26,491. When the pandemic struck in the spring of 2020, its financial impact meant that some families needed increased support to keep their child enrolled at SAAS, while other families found themselves applying for the first time. As a result, Seattle Academy increased the financial aid budget from $5.4 million to $6 million. By the time school started in September, SAAS had awarded more than $6.5 million in financial aid, with 21% of our students receiving grants averaging $28,293. To meet this increased need, philanthropic support has never been more important. This year, our community stepped up to help Seattle Academy fill the financial aid gap by raising more than $2.3 million through our SAAS in the City event and the SAAS Stands Together effort.
This year’s live-streamed SAAS in the City, held on February 27, was watched on almost 400 screens and delivered a time-honored mix of vocal, music, and dance performances; alumni speeches; and a paddle raise for financial aid. Thanks to the 56 Middle and Upper School student performers, 25 alumni who took part in the program, and almost 500 donors, we raised more than $1.1 million. SAAS Stands Together, a strategic campaign held in the fall of 2020 to enlist key donors to support our expanded financial aid needs, resulted in $1.26 million raised for our students. We are grateful to the 38 donors who helped Seattle Academy blunt the impact of COVID-19-related financial losses through this effort.
For the 2020-21 school year Seattle Academy awarded $6.5 million in financial aid, including $619,000 to cover non-tuition costs.

SOUTH PARK In 2019, Seattle Academy entered into an innovative public-private partnership with the City of Seattle and Seattle Parks and Recreation to renovate and upgrade the South Park Community Center site in South Seattle, which was originally constructed in 1912. The park’s redevelopment plan was created with extensive input from members of the community, and includes renovated convening spaces, upgraded public park and recreation areas, and new, high-quality athletic spaces.
As a project partner, Seattle Academy has committed to raising $5 million for the South Park site. Four million dollars is dedicated to the construction of the new full-size, multi-sport field and LED field lighting, and $1 million will be earmarked for 10 years of dedicated funding for community programming, with SAAS spearheading a minimum of 50 hours of programming annually. In the summer of 2020, SAAS organized and led four weeks of sports camps for neighborhood youth and did so again this past summer. The South Park collaboration not only aligns with SAAS’s mission to expand our community engagement beyond Capitol Hill, but the agreement offers our sports teams something the school has long sought: A dedicated practice and playfield. Currently, SAAS uses 12 different fields around the city contingent upon yearly scheduling in competition with other schools, sports clubs, and recreation organizations.
Upon completion of the project, the new lighted playfield at South Park will be reserved for the exclusive use of SAAS teams every weekday afternoon during the fall and spring sports seasons, allowing for streamlined transportation and longterm athletic program planning. Seattle Academy has also stipulated that the new field not enter the general sports league scheduling rotation for five years to prioritize South Park community use. We are grateful to our generous project donors, who have helped us raise more than $3.8 million to date. We appreciate their commitment to our efforts to build a long-term, authentic relationship with the South Park community, and for their gifts to secure access to much-needed athletic fields for our students.
