DEAR FRIENDS,

With immense gratitude, we are pleased to present to you this report outlining our community’s support for Seattle Academy for the 2021-22 school year. With your generous gifts last year, we were able to invest in the foundational programs and new innovations we needed to create the best possible experience for our students.

Last year’s Annual Fund effort, dubbed Impact:SAAS, garnered a record $1.56 million for our general operating expenses, while the SAAS in the City community event resulted in more than $1.1 million raised for our financial aid program. We are also thankful for $300,000 donated to our ongoing South Park initiative and more than $270,000 received for our Endowment. In total, our community donated more than $3.5 million in philanthropic support for SAAS.

These financial contributions are just one piece of our culture of philanthropy. Last year, we were fortunate to have 314 new donors to SAAS. Thank you to everyone—new donors and those who have supported SAAS for years—for making our school a philanthropic

priority. We are also appreciative of the many volunteers who sustained our community through their work for the Family Association, our diversity and inclusion initiatives, and for our Admissions and Development efforts.

As we embark on our 40th year this fall, Seattle Academy continues to develop and strengthen the curriculum and programs that fulfill the SAAS mission to challenge students to question, imagine and create to contribute boldly to a changing world.

The pages that follow recognize the breadth of support that SAAS has received from parents, alumni families, faculty and staff, grandparents and friends. Your contributions as volunteers and donors create a lasting impact on the lives of our students. Thank you in particular to our outgoing Board Chair David Sheppard, who led our trustees for the past three years. We are immensely grateful for his service. We look forward to the leadership of our new Board Chair Matt Echohawk Hayashi, who began his service in July 2022.

Thank you to everyone for their meaningful contributions to Seattle Academy.

IMPACT:SAAS, THE ANNUAL FUND OF SEATTLE ACADEMY

Seattle Academy’s Annual Fund plays a critical role in supporting our school’s day-today expenses, supplementing tuition and endowment revenue and helping to fund everything from teacher salaries and professional development to curriculum materials, student clubs to sports teams, financial aid to student technology, and so much more.

All dollars raised for the Annual Fund are spent during the course of the school year, and have a direct and immediate impact on our students. That is why the theme of this year’s Annual Fund was Impact:SAAS–each and every gift of every size elevates the SAAS student experience to something truly transformational.

Fueled by 913 gifts ranging from $5 to $60,000, this year we raised a record $1.56 million for the Annual Fund. We are grateful for participation from 100% of our Board of Trustees and 65% of current families, as well as the many generous gifts from faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni and alumni families, and community supporters. We are grateful for the continued demonstration of steadfast commitment to SAAS students and a SAAS education.

“SAAS has really encouraged and inspired our daughter to advocate for herself in many areas of her life. We feel this is due to her approachable and dedicated teachers, along with a caring and diverse community at SAAS.”

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING

For the first time in more than two years, the Seattle Academy community gathered in person for a revamped SAAS in the City, our annual party that celebrates the transformational impact of a SAAS education and raises funds to benefit our Financial Aid programs. With generous support from seven sponsors, 470 guests, more than 100 student performers and 11 alumni performers or speakers, together we raised a total of $1,108,911 to ensure access and inclusion for all students regardless of socioeconomic background.

The average financial aid grant is $30,000, which means thanks to our collective efforts we were able to raise enough for 30+ students who may rely on financial assistance next year.

The success of SAAS in the City is a direct result of the tremendous effort and countless hours put in by volunteers, student performers, and faculty and staff. Thank you to event co-chairs Megan Bergerson and Deena McCloskey.

BUILDING CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY

SOUTH PARK

In 2019, Seattle Academy entered into an innovative public-private partnership with the City of Seattle and Seattle Parks and Recreation to renovate the South Park Community Center site in South Seattle. Seattle Academy has committed to raising $5 million for this project: Four million dollars for the construction of the new full-size, fully-lit multi-sport field that, upon completion, will be reserved for the exclusive use of SAAS teams every weekday afternoon during the fall and spring sports seasons; and $1 million dedicated to 10 years of community programming at the site, with SAAS spearheading a minimum of 50 hours of programming annually. Since 2019, SAAS has organized and led four weeks of sports and STEM camps for neighborhood youth.

We are grateful to our generous project donors, who have helped us raise more than $4 million to date.

We appreciate their commitment to our efforts to build a long-term, authentic relationship with the South Park community, and for their gifts to secure access to much-needed athletic fields for our students.

SAAS RISING

SAAS Rising: A Campaign for Campus Transformation was the $35 million capital campaign effort to unite the Middle and Upper Schools on the 12th Avenue block with the construction of the Cardinal Union Building and the STREAM Building.

Seattle Academy is grateful for the many donors who supported SAAS Rising.

Of SAAS students engage in school team sports

Endowments are considered a hallmark of financial sustainability, and we are pleased to report that the total value of the SAAS Endowment stands at $20,905,633 as of June 30, 2022. To ensure long-term sustainability, the Board of Trustees has adopted an endowment spending policy of between 2% and 5% of total net assets on a 12-quarter, rolling average market value, ending June 30. This year, Seattle Academy drew $804,396 of endowment investment income to supplement our annual budget. This year during our Alumni Giving Week initiative, we asked SAAS graduates and alumni families to support the Reid Rogers Endowment, which provides the financial resources needed to ensure that all SAAS students have the opportunity to explore the world through SAAS trips and travel. It was a privilege to feature this fund as it honors Reid, Class of 2017, and his love for these programs. These gifts will directly support financial aid students now and in the future who otherwise may not have the opportunity to participate with their class on the annual outdoor and travel trips.

16 SAAS 2021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT

“As we look ahead to the future — college, internships, travel, and work opportunities for our graduating students — it is a good time to consider ways to support the school that helped get each of our children where they are today! I can say without a doubt that SAAS has been a transformative environment for my child to come into their own, not only regarding academics but also as an (almost!) fully developed, confident, independent person ready for the challenges of adulthood.”
