PATRICK LoCICERO
HOMAGE
JA N UARY 20 21 “Homage” is a collection of new paintings that pays tribute to, and are inspired by a select group of artists from the past who have affected and impacted Lo Cicero’s career and self-development as an artist. Lo Cicero’s love for ephemera and collage is merged with personal iconography to give a contemporary reinterpretation of the vernacular in a vast array of arts that includes painting, literature and music. The paintings merge all these loves into unique and interesting narratives. TO PRE VI EW T H E EX HI B I T I O N : m a i l @ rov za rga l l e ry.com
Night Hawks, oil & collage on canvas, 31 x 48 in. Paying tribute to artist Edward Hopper and to his painting of the same title, Lo Cicero combined his signature depiction of the fedora with collaged iconography found in the band of the hats gleaned from Hopper’s paintings. The fedoras float on a “stage” background of gold leaf that mimics the old walls of cinemas, or hotels from the 40’s and 50’s. This painting also is relevant to our current times of isolation, uncertainty and alienation; thus the falling of the hats.

The Illustrator, oil & collage on canvas, 48 x 48 in. This painting pays tribute to Norman Rockwell who always wore a bow tie. The stripes casually suggest the stripes of the flag and give a nod to the fact that Rockwell was America’s premier illustrator for half a century. The background imagery is taken from vintage Saturday Evening Post covers of the same era.

SUZIE BUCHHOLZ
Suzie Buchholz is a Bay Area abstract painter whose work brings a playful and rebellious approach to the tradition of Abstract Expressionism. Driven by an instinct for harmony, color & form, Buchholz process is highly physical creating great depth by building and scraping layers of paint. Inspired by the tangled and fragile moments of daily life, her work combines a painterly process and street-wise sensibility with an uncanny tenderness.

Roger Shimomura: 100 “Little White Lies” We are pleased to announce our thirteenth exhibition for Roger Shimomura. This exhibition is a suite of one hundred 12 inch square acrylic paintings made in 2019-20. We will install these in a single line in all four of our main galleries. The paintings juxtapose such disparate images as the artist’s self-portrait, Disney characters, riffs on Lichtenstein’s masterpiece paintings, Warhol’s portraits of celebrities, and scenes from Camp Minidoka, where the artist and his family were imprisoned during World War II. The paintings are at times poignant, satirical, playful and sometimes full of outrage. Images of the past intermingle with the immediate present as Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor don pandemic face coverings, or the silhouette of ex-president Donald Trump looms behind a geisha figure from a ukiyo-e print.

We are publishing a fully illustrated catalog for the exhibition with an essay by noted art historian Sue Taylor.
“Shimomura delivers a powerful visual and moral punch with the monumental series ‘Little White Lies,’ a grand summa of all the concerns he has explored over the course of a distinguished career. Like all his art, the one hundred brightly colored twelveinch square paintings demand soul-searching and serious critical thinking.” –Sue Taylor Suite of 100 paintings, LITTLE WHITE LIES , acrylic on canvas, 12 x 12 inches
