Queen of the Sun, 60 x 48, acrylic on panel

Transitioning from previously ethereal and utopic scenes, in "Tattooed" Siems depicts figures with a distinctly more forward, unabashed and direct posture. These women bear tattoos as a signal of inner wildness, pronouncing their stories, fables, mythical belonging, and rites of passage. Siems boldly paints women who are smart, creative, and have something to say. They are political beings with slogans and phrases that are markers of the time we live in and serve as reminders of the deep connections women share with the universe. A dedicated activist in her personal life, Siems‘ artistic practice highlights the state of the world, how she senses it, understands it, and ultimately, how she creates beauty from it.
