David Byrd Montrose VA 1958-1988 David Byrd created his magnum opus, Montrose VA 1958-1988, to record the 30 years he spent working as an orderly at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Montrose, NY. We selected many unbound pages from Byrd’s original large-scale manuscript to be displayed in vitrines. We also borrowed back some of the paintings from our original show which are referenced by studies in the book. Byrd’s estate is now ably represented by Anton Kern Gallery in New York, to which we are grateful for the loan of the Montrose album. We will also offer a full scale reproduction of the book for sale, produced by his estate and Anton Kern. David Byrd, PLAYBOY PAINTING , 1991, oil on canvas, 26 x 30 inches

Cadillac Hotel, Oil on canvas, 36 x 48 in.

“This exhibition, which focuses solely on Seattle, has inspired me to discover—and rediscover—signs in my own backyard, bringing me closer to my own family history and that of my city. Seattle has been my family’s hometown for more than one-hundred years and throughout these years the city has undergone dramatic changes. In just my lifetime it has transformed from an underdog backwater to an economic center on the world stage. But this exhibition is more than nostalgia for a hometown. It is an examination of what has been left as symbols in our skyline by those who have gone before us, and it is a consideration of what will remain after our work is done.”
