JACK CHEVALIER
December 2–30, 2021 FIRST THURSDAY: December 2, 6–8 pm
Memorial Exhibition 1979–2019
This exhibition follows Jack Chevalier’s career from the late 1970s— when he arrived in Seattle—to his final show at Linda Hodges Gallery in 2019. His early work of mixed media masks and geometric shields demonstrated a new lexicon of tribal-inspired symbols, catching the attention of collectors, critics, and gallerists across the country. From there he developed a large body of painting on carved wood panels with bold geometric patterns. He eventually incorporated more everyday archetypal subject matter—coupling the abstract with representational imagery. In later years he mixed more photography into his constructions, and the work grew more complex. Once acknowledged as an abstract artist, his paintings from the last decade of his life became more political, incorporating historical references and well-known personalities. Chevalier, a veteran of the contentious Vietnam War, was inspired to make work informed by his experiences.
“Chevalier demonstrates an apparently inexhaustible range of images in his plea for the coexistence of a simultaneously conscious and unconscious way of perceiving the world.” —Matthew Kangas, Art in America, January 1990

TIAO NITHAKHONG SOMSANITH
Tiao Nithakhong Somsanith The Impermanence of Life: Teak Leaf I Gold, silver and copper hand embroidered leaf 10.75 x 3.75 inches
A descendant of the last viceroy of Laos, Prince Tiao Nithakhong Somsanith (b. 1959) grew up surrounded by the courtly arts of painting, lacquer and traditional embroidery. Exiled to France during the political strife of the 1970s, Somsanith returned to Laos in 2005 and now devotes his time to art and community with the mission to preserve and promote Laos’ cultural and artistic heritage. Somsanith uses nature as a source of inspiration, gathering fallen leaves on his daily walks that are often broken and pierced with irregular holes. He meticulously transforms these leaves using the traditional Lao methods of gold and silver thread embroidery into jewel-like sculptures that symbolize life and its fragility. ArtXchange Gallery is showcasing a highly unique collection of Somsanith’s work through January 29, 2022. Please visit our website for a special Online Viewing Room and contact us for private viewing appointments of The Impermanence of Life collection.
