Dear Animal Lovers, Summer at Seattle Humane was filled with pet food drives, kids at Animal Adventures camp and Washington State University veterinary students in clinical training with us. We also welcomed crowds of kitty lovers at our 8th annual Catapalooza, including cat expert Jackson Galaxy of Animal Planet! He was here to launch the Cats R Cool Program, a partnership between Jackson Galaxy, The Animal Rescue Site, GreaterGood.org and the Petfinder Foundation to educate cat-lovers about cat behavior and enrichment.

In the midst of all of this amazing work, we got a call for help from Whitman County Humane Society. Our Life-Saver Rescue team rescued 70 animals from a rural residence near Pullman and transported them to Seattle Humane. These neglected animals arrived with some serious dental and skin conditions. Students from WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine were on hand to help our veterinarians with their care. The cats, dogs, guinea pigs and one rabbit rescued from this unfortunate situation are on their way to good health and homes of their own, thanks to your support and our ability to assist. You can read more about this rescue effort on pages 6 and 7.

As summer began, the shelves of our Pet Food Bank were nearly empty. Thanks to a series of summer pet food drives with 107.7 The End/Pet Pros, Bartell Drugs, Safeway and on campus, more than 10 tons of food was donated to our Pet Food Bank, which serves 2,000 pets every month.

Community Star at Age 12 Jessica Chin stands out as an exceptional youth in our community who has gone above and beyond in volunteer service. She was honored at The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for her outstanding volunteerism, in part for her contributions to Seattle Humane Society. As a foster volunteer, Jessica and her family have cared for kittens, puppies and dogs in need of a home environment. She has also participated twice in the Walk for the Animals, raising more than $600 for Seattle Humane Society. We are so thankful for Jessica and her wonderful family for their dedication to animals. If your teenage son or daughter, ages 7 to 12, wants to learn more about animals and become a future volunteer at Seattle Humane, check out our Humane Teen Club at seattlehumane.org/volunteer.

Fur-Filled Memories at Camp Summertime at Seattle Humane Society’s Animal Adventures camp thrilled more than 200 animal-loving children. From hands-on lessons in pet training and animal behavior to fascinating guest speakers and fun games — every moment of camp celebrated our relationships with animals.
Filling the Bowls of Pets in Need
During the first week of camp, the children met and touched a 7-month-old Wallaby named Koori. Wallabies are primarily found in Australia and the surrounding islands, so this was a rare and exciting treat. Each weekly group of new campers conducted a food drive for the Pet Food Bank. The kids raised an astounding 5,800 pounds of food during eight weeks of camp. Thank you to every camper this year — you’ve helped so many animals in need! Our Pet Food Bank is a lifeline for many pets of low-income seniors and people disabled by HIV/AIDS in our community. In the fall and spring, the shelves of the food bank can get dangerously low and pet food drives conducted by the local business community make an incredible difference in the lives of these companion animals. The Pet Food Bank feeds nearly 2,000 animals a month. Our friends at 107.7 The End and Pet Pros teamed up to help raise more than 7,500 pounds of dry food alone, along with 1,900 cans of food. During Bartell’s Pet Week in June, customers donated nearly 2,000 pounds. Safeway shoppers donated 5,500 pounds of food in July, helping us fill the shelves for pets in need.

With Your Pooch
Fall is the perfect season
to go hiking with your dog, with colorful scenery and cooler temperatures. So grab your dog, your pack, poop bags and a leash… you’ll love these staff picks for hikes! Poo Poo Point on Tiger Mountain Don’t let the name sway you — this fun hike is great for you and Fido with an optional steep finish at the end. Once you reach the very top, you will see a range of fall colors from Issaquah to Puget Sound. Rattlesnake Mountain via Snoqualmie Point On a clear day (it happens!), the golden leaves might just frame Rainier in the background. Be ready for a challenge if you and your dog want to do the full 10.9-mile roundtrip hike. Wallace Falls in Gold Bar Moss-covered trees accented by colorful fall leaves highlight this easy to moderate hike. Go after a couple days of rain and the falls will be incredible, but bring a towel for muddy paws. Bandera Mountain near North Bend Want blazing fall colors? A gradual slope leads to incredible views and to switchbacks that are perfect you and your super active pooch. Boulder River Waterfall near Darrington You’ll be surrounded by old-growth trees and inspiring color. This is a gentle trail that might be good for smaller dogs who love to get outside. Quick Hiking Tips with Dogs: • Avoid heavy-use horse and bike trails. • Pack enough water for your four-legged friends, too. • Know the dog leash rules prior to planning your hike.

ngeborg Schweizer (“Inge” to her friends) grew up in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1958 she married Fred Schweizer, who had served as an American spy in Germany. After her father passed away, Inge, Fred and Inge’s mother moved to the Schweizer family dairy farm in Vancouver, Wash. One of Inge’s best friends remembers her as someone who lit up a room. She was fiercely independent, very generous and always prepared. She also loved to shop, often buying loaves of day-old bread and bringing it to senior centers, her friends, and her dry cleaner. Inge and Fred had several pets over the years, including Blackie, a black and white dog; Simon, a Manx cat; and Fritz, the 20-plus pound Manx cat Inge had when she passed. Inge’s love of animals benefitted Seattle Humane Society, which she supported for more than 20 years. In her will, Inge named Seattle Humane Society to receive a generous bequest, and she thoughtfully provided for her cat, Fritz, to be sure he was cared for in a loving home. Fritz is now doing well in a playful home of four cats, enjoying his new home with Inge’s dear friends.

eattle Humane’s Life-Saver Rescue Team saved 70 dogs, cats and small animals from a hoarding situation in rural Whitman County in July. Many of these pets were malnourished, suffered from severe dental disease and had skin and respiratory infections. Among them was Cheyenne, a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix with a mouth full of painfully infected teeth. Cheyenne was frightened upon arrival, but we knew her personality would shine through once she received the care she needed. Our veterinary team cleaned Cheyenne’s teeth and removed the two that were causing her pain. Within three days of arriving at Seattle Humane, Cheyenne was much better and ready for adoption. A family very familiar with Chihuahuas came to visit the same day after hearing of the rescue in the local news. Once Cheyenne crawled onto their laps, she captured their hearts. She was the first of the 70 pets to be adopted, and is now showering her new family with love and doggie kisses. In the days following the rescue, our veterinary team treated infections as well as performed spay and neuter surgeries for the remaining pets. Within seven days of the rescue, eight cats and five dogs from Whitman County were adopted from Seattle Humane Society!
How to Recognize Neglected Pets When pets go without food, water, adequate shelter or veterinary care, they are victims of neglect. Look for these common signs of neglect to determine whether an animal is in need of your help: • Their mobility is restricted and they do not have access to food, water or shelter, including shade • Pet is thin or overweight • Pet has visible hair loss, lesions or open wounds • Excessive barking or vocalization • They are living in unsanitary conditions — near trash or in their own waste Contact your local animal control authorities if you suspect a pet is being neglected. The rescue operation was performed in cooperation with the Whitman County Humane Society in Pullman. “Without our help, this shelter would not be able to care for these pets due to the lack of space and resources available,” said CEO David Loewe. “By working together, we were able to utilize our Life-Saver Rescue Team to save these pets, and open up space at Whitman County Humane so they can save more pets in their community.” With your support, we can and we will continue to save even more lives through our Life-Saver Rescue Program. Sometimes Saying Goodbye Saves a Life Teddy, a 3-year-old Chihuahua, was surrendered to us with a painful spinal injury that left his hind legs paralyzed. His family could not afford to provide Teddy with the medical care needed to help him. Heartbroken, the family made the difficult decision to surrender Teddy to Seattle Humane. Thanks to The Lexus Fund for dogs, we’re able to give dogs like Teddy the extra medical care they need to become adoptable. Our veterinarians immediately worked to ease Teddy’s pain, provided him with a special harness to help him walk and started a regimen of physical therapy. Volunteers took Teddy outside daily in his harness, and he quickly started to improve and gain mobility in his hind legs. Our veterinarians also neutered and microchipped Teddy, and he continued to recover and heal in a volunteer foster home until he was ready for adoption. Pets like Teddy who are in need of urgent medical care are always welcome at Seattle Humane Society. Compassion in Our Community is Strong Seattle Humane received a distressing call for help from a Good Samaritan in Renton who saw a cat with its front leg caught in its collar. Our Life-Saver Rescue staff went to the location, safely coaxed the cat into a pet carrier and brought him to the shelter for care. Romeo (formerly Paulie), needed immediate medical attention because his collar was embedded deep into his armpit. Our veterinarians surgically removed the collar and sutured the deep wound. Along with his severe wound, Romeo also suffered from malnutrition and needed interaction with people. In order to heal and receive TLC in a home setting, Romeo was fostered by a generous family who gave him the love and attention he needed.
Romeo survived homelessness and injury thanks to our Life-Saver Rescue Program and Foster Volunteer Program.
At many shelters, a cat like Romeo wouldn’t have a chance. But at Seattle Humane Society, every pet gets the care and attention they deserve. Our foster volunteers are true heroes who take pets like Romeo into their homes and help them recover. We’re thrilled to report that Romeo has been adopted into his new home and is playful and happy. Last year, more than 5,400 animals benefited from foster care. Hi,
Just wanted to give you an update on Alvin & Dave‌they both are doing great. Alvin has made himself completely at home...he thinks he owns the place and was the first one to venture out of the bedroom when I first brought them home. For some reason Alvin likes to slide down the stairs, and it’s pretty funny to watch. After two weeks, he decided to come up to me and sit on my lap. I think he has become my buddy, as he likes to be where I am. I have two window perches and Dave loves to watch the birds and listen to the frogs making noise at night. Dave seems like he is a thinker – when you watch him you can just see his brain going. In the wintertime his favorite place is in front of the fireplace to enjoy the heat. Sometimes Alvin will act like he sees something, starts making noises and runs; Dave just looks at him like he is crazy. It is so funny. I cannot imagine them being adopted separately. They are so close to each other and Dave is so protective of Alvin. Both of them have brought a lot of joy to me and I love having them. - Charlene Merrifield
Howdy Guys, Sorry it took so long to send details on my new home, but it's very tough trying to learn a new language and it took me ages to figure out he was speaking Gaelic! I thought he was joking at first! Anyway, I love the new place. I bring my owner for walks in the morning and the evening, so that I can stretch my legs and also make sure my owner does not get too lazy. He spends too much time at his desk working. I always make sure to wake him up early on the weekend and drag him out to Tiger Mountain or Mount Si or Lake Serene for a nice long hike to tire him out. I don't really mind, he has to drive back home and I get to sleep. I just want to thank you guys for taking such good care of me during my stay at Seattle Humane Society. Walk to help pets like me!
September 22
9 am -–2 pm at U Village Seattle Humane Society’s Walk for the Animals at U Village’s FidoFEST is the perfect event for you to get active and support our life-saving work! Every year more than 1,000 animal lovers and their dogs Walk in support of homeless pets. Register for the 2-mile walk held Sunday, Sept. 22 and we’ll support your fundraising along the way. Funds raised provide food, shelter and medical care to thousands of pets in need in our community.
