Letter from CEO David Loewe Dear Animal Lovers,
Winter 2014 • Vol 24 • Issue 4
As another year comes to a close, I’m reminded of all that Seattle Humane has accomplished thanks to your support. This last fiscal year we achieved a life-saving rate of 97.9 percent – one of the highest in the country! What does this mean for the animals? It means that 3,489 animals were transferred from other shelters through our Life-Saver Rescue Program, and 5,345 pets were given the extra time they needed to become adoptable by volunteer foster families. Our veterinarians performed 6,465 spay and neuter surgeries, including more than 2,500 for pets of low-income households and other rescue groups. It means that together we placed nearly 7,000 dogs, cats, and critters last fiscal year – a record-breaking accomplishment in our shelter’s 117-year history! This year we also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pet Project, which provides food and primary veterinary care to more than 200 pets belonging to people disabled by HIV/AIDS. The goal of this program is to keep people and pets together when the comfort of a pet is needed most. Thanks to your support of our Fund-A-Need project, we raised more than $570,000 for the shelter’s community outreach programs serving clients who depend on the Pet Project and the Pet Food Bank. These funds have allowed us to expand our services to low-income cancer patients. Look for our pet food barrels at King County Safeway stores beginning Nov. 28, and support our holiday pet food drive to keep these programs going strong for both the people and pets of need in our community. As Seattle Humane continues to grow, we are able to care for more pets and find them new, loving homes. By expanding our community outreach programs like Pet Project, we are also reducing the number of homeless pets who end up in shelters, while providing much-needed love and comfort to the people who love them, too. This means more lives saved, and we simply could not do this without your continued support. Thank you for all that you do now and all year long.

Humane Happenings News & Updates Walk for the Animals Raises a Record-Breaking $140,000!
288 Pets Adopted During Blitz Weekend
Our 12th annual Walk for the Animals at University Village’s FidoFEST raised $140,000 for pets in need at Seattle Humane – a record for this event! More than 1,000 animal lovers and their dogs joined us for a 2-mile walk on the Burke-Gilman trail, followed by a celebration of all things pet at FidoFEST. Walkers enjoyed live music, a dog-friendly beer and wine garden, pet-friendly vendors, dog contests, and more. PLUS nine adoptable dogs met their new families at this year’s Walk for the Animals!
Seattle Humane found loving homes for 288 pets at our Free Pet Adoption Blitz – a weekend whirlwind of love, laughter and pure glee! The buzz around our fourth annual free adoption weekend brought thousands of pet lovers to the shelter Oct. 1719. We found homes for an amazing 125 kittens and 29 senior pets, including Amelia, a 14-year-old Himalayan cat, and Maybel, a 10-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier. Many of the senior pets were shelter guests for months, and it was wonderful to see them finally joining families in homes of their own.
Purrs, tail wags and a big thank you to everyone who walked, fundraised, or made a donation to Walk for the Animals!
One of the most notable adoption successes involved Riley, an active and boisterous 6-year-old Retriever mix, who had been at the shelter for five months. An experienced dog owner fell instantly in love with Riley and his silly antics. Riley was the spitting image of a much cherished dog in the man’s past, and the special connection they had couldn’t be denied. Riley met his match that weekend, and the two will share many happy years together. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this event a huge success!

Animal Advocates A Tribute to Jessie Wheeler Jessie Wheeler lived a life full of adventure and happiness. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling and exploring the world. But you would also find her relaxing at her house near Pine Lake in Issaquah, just swimming and soaking up the afternoon sun with her dog. She made a career in Seattle as a stenographer, but she was most passionate about wildlife advocacy. Jessie spent hours writing support letters to her favorite animal charities. She had a true love and passion for animals, and her concern for animals led Jessie to include Seattle Humane as a beneficiary of her estate, ensuring her legacy would live on by helping pets in need. Jessie was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, the eldest daughter of four children. She met her husband, Tracy, in New Westminster and years later they moved to Pine Lake. She loved living near the lake, spending most of her time in nature, walking her dog, and admiring the ducks. By making Seattle Humane Society a beneficiary of her estate, Jessie’s legacy will now live on in our life-saving work, and thousands of orphaned animals will benefit from her generosity for years to come. Learn how you can leave a lasting legacy for the animals at Seattle Humane. Call (425) 649-7551 or email scott@seattlehumane.org.

Pet Tips
Cold Weather advice for pets
Brrrr—it’s cold outside! Here’s how to keep your companion animals warm and protected when the temperature dips.
Keep Pets Indoors Pets can get frostbite, too! Never leave your pet outside in cold temperatures. On freezing cold days, keep your walks and snowromps short. Puppies and senior dogs are extra sensitive to cold weather, so you may consider taking them outside only for potty breaks.
Don’t Leave Your Pet In a Vehicle
Leaving your pet in the car for long periods of time can put them at risk of freezing. Cars really don’t retain heat when it’s chilly outside.
Dress Them Appropriately
Just because your pet is covered in fur doesn’t mean that he or she can withstand cold temperatures. A dog’s coat provides some insulation against the cold, but short-haired dogs need a coat or sweater for additional warmth while outside. If salting is used in your neighborhood, make sure to use dog booties to prevent your pet from getting chemicals on the pads of his feet, which can lead to burns and even poisoning if he licks his feet.
Increase Your Pet’s Food Supply
Dogs have to work harder to stay warm when exercising outside in cold weather. Increasing your pet’s food supply during colder months will keep him and his fur in tip-top shape.
Beware of Seasonal Poisons
Coolant and antifreeze can spill in the garage or on the street and are lethal poisons for dogs and cats. A dog’s paws, legs and stomach should be wiped off when coming in out of the rain, sleet, snow or ice.
Give Your Pet a Warm Sleeping Spot
Providing a warm place to sleep, off of the floor and away from drafts, will keep dogs and cats feeling comfortable during the cold months.
Save a Life by Tapping On Your Hood
Outdoor cats will climb under the hoods of cars for warmth, so be safe and bang loudly on the car’s hood before starting the engine to give any sleeping cats a chance to vacate.

The Foster Factor
6
Foster care volunteer, Leslie Bryant, has a framed photo of each pet she has cared for.
The Foster Factor Leslie proudly shows off her “Wall of Foster Fame” holding Rocky, her 8-month-old so-called “foster failure.” Rocky is one of the 69 cats and kittens Leslie has opened her home up to in the last two years as a foster care volunteer. Rocky was transferred from a shelter that was inundated with kittens, and they called Seattle Humane for help. Thanks to our Life-Saver Rescue Program and our committed network of volunteer foster parents, we were able to take in Rocky and his littermates to give them time to grow in a loving foster home. Leslie now shares her home with her two cats, Rocky (adopted foster kitten) and Pixel, and her dog, Muffin – all Seattle Humane alums! As a kitten, Rocky was infected by Feline Leukemia (FeLV) from his mother’s milk. FeLV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can cause tumors in cats. If an effective immune response develops during the first phase of infection, it’s possible for cats to rid themselves of the virus. This takes time, energy and resources, and at many shelters, this diagnosis would have been a death sentence for Rocky. What’s unique about Seattle Humane is we have the support of volunteers like Leslie who help make it possible for us to go above and beyond for every pet. These volunteer foster heroes literally expand the walls of our shelter by welcoming pets in need into their homes until they can be adopted. Our veterinary team was able to treat Rocky while he received one-on-one care from Leslie, and he pulled through! Thrilled with his recovery, Leslie welcomed this charming fellow into her family for good. She admits that saying goodbye to foster kitties can be difficult, but knowing how much joy they’ll bring to a family makes it worth all the effort. Plus, the more healthy cats and kittens she returns to the shelter for adoption, the more she can bring home to help. Seattle Humane’s Volunteer Foster Program allows the shelter to take in pets who wouldn’t have a chance anywhere else. Our volunteers give senior pets a much needed break from the shelter, provide behavior training, often round-the-clock care for underage kittens and puppies, and so much more. Last year alone, more than 5,000 animals benefited from a home environment provided by 531 dedicated foster care volunteers. “Our foster program is a great asset to the shelter, the animals, and our adopters,” says Dog Foster Coordinator Jessica Minger. “With pets in foster care, we can get a better idea of how they’ll act in a home, and the shelter has more space to take in even more animals in need.” Shelters throughout the nation have recognized the success of our Foster Care Program and have called on us to learn how they can improve their own foster network. Happy to offer any advice we can to save lives, we provide a step-by-step packet on how we have grown this invaluable network of volunteer foster heroes. What do you need to be a foster hero? Just a bit of extra room and a lot of love. We provide all food, supplies and medical care. Visit seattlehumane.org/volunteer to sign up for the next volunteer orientation and learn more!

Letters from
Dear Seattle Humane,
“We are just going to look, really quick,” my sister said to my son and me as we entered Seattle Humane for the fourth time in a month. I was looking for a companion dog for my son, but to no avail. All the dogs we met were too big, too rough, or didn’t connect with my son. Andrew is high-functioning autistic; he did so well with my sister’s two Dachshunds we thought it was time to have a dog of his own. As we entered the shelter on that fateful day, we were unaware that you had just transferred in dogs from California. We entered the first kennel, and I will always remember the first time I saw her. She stood against the glass, not making a sound as she looked from my sister to me and then back again. I now understand the saying, “the dog chooses you.” My sister and I looked at each other and without saying a word, we knew that she was the one. “So much for just looking,” my sister joked. Although she chose us, she still had one final test. Would she love Andrew? We waited in the get acquainted area as she was brought to us. She passed all our tests (petting her bum, taking her treats away, putting our fingers lightly on her paw). Then she walked up to my son, put her paws on his legs, and gave him the gentlest little kiss. She chose us. She had already been through so much, yet she chose us. I cannot thank you enough for the joy and happiness that you have brought into our home. Rescue dogs are not broken – they just need a fresh start. Her name is Gabby now, and we will love her all the days of her life.

Hello! I want to share our success story with you and provide a picture of Benton. I adopted Benton after the death of two of my older female cats. The one boy cat I had at home, Buddy, was so lonely without them, and I felt I had to get him a companion. I went to my local pet store to see who they had when I noticed Seattle Humane’s MaxMobile set up outside. I was just looking, and wasn’t planning on coming home with a pet, but something drew me right to Benton. I asked if I could pet him, and I even got to hold him! The staff mentioned he was shy so I knew it was not going to be easy, but I figured that since my cat was around the same age they might bond. The first few days the two boys just hissed at each other, and Benton pretty much hid under our bed. I put his blanket and food under the bed to ensure he ate. He stayed there, except at night, when we were asleep. He bonded with Buddy, and they became best friends only playing together at night. I spent my evenings sitting on the floor trying to get Benton to come out for some pets. Coaxing him with treats seemed to do the trick. Eventually he would let me reach under the bed to pet him, and then he would come out for a few seconds. We are still working with him, but he has come a long way. He loves his wet food and is becoming a talker, letting us know it’s time for food. He is still very shy, but is also doing so well, and I want to encourage anyone who is considering adopting a shy pet, to just be patient. Just when you think they will never come out of hiding, and be the pet you hoped for, they start to trust you. Thank you again for Benton. My husband and I enjoy watching him explore his new world as he learns to trust us more and more.

Adopters Hello SHS,
I wanted to let you guys know about the cat we adopted during this year’s Catapalooza event. Our family lost our last kitty due to some health issues associated with advanced age. After deciding we were ready for a new feline friend, we packed up our son and headed over to the event. We walked around and met lots of great cats before finally stopping at the room reserved for cats with FIV. We noticed a handsome cat, Simon, with huge eyes and a calm demeanor. He seemed very mellow as our son (he’s almost four) petted and combed him, and was unfazed by all of the people coming in and out of the room. We continued looking at other cats, but we kept coming back to the little guy in the FIV room. As we learned more about him, it turned out he had been at the shelter for eight months. We also found out that he’d been declawed, a terrible process that no cat should endure. Knowing all of the hardships he’d been through was enough for us, and we decided to make him part of our family. As we walked back to the office to fill out the paperwork, everyone was excited to find out that Simon was finally going to a forever home. I’m extremely happy to report that Simon (who we renamed Bubbles due to his resemblance to a character from one of our favorite shows, “The Trailer Park Boys”) made himself comfortable within a day or two of coming home with us. He gets along with our French bulldog incredibly well, playing and snuggling with her. Our son ADORES him, and gently pets his head every chance he gets. Our Bubbles is extremely affectionate and warm, and loves cuddling with us on the couch and in bed. When he starts to purr (which happens a lot) it sounds like a Harley Davidson engine firing up. It’s a wonderful noise. I hope the story of our happiness with Bubbles helps other families to decide on adopting a cat with FIV. There’s no doubt that stopping in to the FIV room at Catapalooza this year was one of the best decisions we could have made. We love our Bubs!

Hello Seattle Humane! I am just writing to say thank you. My husband and I recently adopted our Nollie from your shelter in Bellevue. She was scared and timid, and even with her confidence issues, we could see this beautiful young dog who we wanted to build into a confident girl. So here we are, two weeks into our adoption, and she is gaining confidence by the day! She has already enjoyed her first backpacking trip, meeting our friends and family’s dogs, going on multiple hikes, and wading in our neighborhood river site. She rarely pulls away like the nervous girl at the shelter – except that one time with the little fish hatchlings in a creek behind our cabin! She is becoming such a silly dog, and we are already working on her off-leash manners. She is blossoming, and I cannot thank you enough for giving us the opportunity to receive the love she gives us!

Happy Tails A ‘Happily Ever After’ for Whiskey the Rabbit At Seattle Humane, we don’t discriminate against any pet who comes to us in need – regardless of age, breed or medical condition. When a concerned citizen found Whiskey, a cold and badly injured stray rabbit in a park, he was immediately brought to the closest veterinary clinic. The veterinary staff felt that Whiskey’s injuries were too severe to treat. His finder didn’t give up though, and instead, brought Whiskey to Seattle Humane to get the medical attention he desperately needed. As expected, Whiskey needed immediate surgery. One of his rear legs was shattered, and it had to be amputated. Our veterinarian was unsure of his outcome as rabbits are very sensitive, and require special attention in recovery. Because Whiskey was in need of some tender loving care, we sought out our most bunny-savvy adoption advisor, Teri Persen, to foster him in her home and nurse him back to health. Luckily, Whiskey is a very determined rabbit who loves new scenery. Each day he grew stronger on just three legs, motivated by the potential to explore, and hopping outside of his cage within days! When Whiskey recovered and was ready to be adopted, his finder called to check in on the status of this special rabbit. She was thrilled that we were able to help him, and simply decided it was meant to be. After learning more about bunny care, she adopted Whiskey and named him this because, as she says, “he’s just as strong as the real whiskey.” Whiskey’s second chance is possible because of the generous support of our community and its support for Seattle Humane’s life-saving work. Thanks to you, he’s now spoiled in his own home, munching on fresh greens and loving life as a healthy, happy bunny.
Panda’s “Rags to Riches” Story Just three years ago, Panda was found roaming the Westfield Vancouver Mall with no identification, and suffering from severe allergies that left him in pain and nearly hairless. Thanks to our Life-Saver Rescue program, we transferred Panda to Seattle Humane to receive much-needed veterinary care. When Panda healed, he was adopted by Debby, who claims it might be the other way around! When she first met Panda, she found him to be unsure and reserved, but he definitely possessed a special spark. A spark that led him to victory in many dog shows, earning five titles, and even becoming a certified therapy dog! Panda is now described as a happy soul willing to take on any situation with enthusiasm. More recently, Panda was cast as Sandy in a local production of the Broadway musical Annie. He was a natural on stage – he clearly loved to perform – and did so in two different shows in front of a live audience. During dress rehearsal, Panda not only took on his role of Sandy, but also as therapy dog. He kept leaving the stage to visit one woman in the audience. When rehearsal ended, Debby learned that this woman had recently lost someone special, and she was going through a difficult time. Panda sensed her pain and immediately formed a bond with her as well. He has touched many lives and Debby says he brings so much light to her life as her constant companion. 10

That Gives Back Help save a life this holiday season. As you plan your year-end giving, please remember the animals at Seattle Humane Society. Every donation makes a life-saving difference for pets in need. Gifts benefiting the animals in Seattle Humane’s care are tax-effective, too.
