Letter from CEO David Loewe Dear Animal Lovers,
Fall 2014 • Vol 23 • Issue 3
What a summer it was at Seattle Humane! Our adoption center was packed every day with animal lovers looking to add a furry friend to their family. Hundreds of kittens, cats, puppies and dogs were placed in loving homes, thanks to community support for adoption. Many of the pets came to Seattle Humane via our Life-Saver Rescue Program, which transfers animals from other shelters that need our help. Summer means kitten season, and a record-breaking 211 cats and kittens, many of them Life-Saver rescues, were adopted during our annual cat adoption festival, Catapalooza, Aug. 9-10. Nine other rescues and shelters joined us to find homes for their fabulous felines. If you heard camp songs coming from the Seattle Humane auditorium this summer, you were not mistaken! More than 200 kids attended Animal Adventures Summer Camp on our campus, meeting with dogs, cats, bunnies, goats, birds, ferrets – even therapy horses! They learned about animal behavior and handling, body language, pet care and compassion – all while having a blast. As we head into fall, I’m hoping you’ll join us at the Walk for the Animals at FidoFEST on Oct. 5, a day of fun and fundraising to benefit animals at Seattle Humane Society. Hosted by University Village, the event features local celebrities, adoptable pets, a 2-mile dog walk on the Burke-Gilman trail, vendor booths, wine tasting, live music, dog contests and more! Thank you for all the ways you help the animals at Seattle Humane, and we’ll see you at the Walk!

The winning group raised more than 300 pounds of pet food!
This year campers were divided into two different groups, ages 7-9 and 10-12. The separation allowed for the younger campers to participate in fun games, activities, and demos geared towards learning and understanding animal behavior, while older campers focused on a more advanced curriculum of humane education. This new structure creates a great foundation for campers who are interested in moving on to Seattle Humane’s Humane Teen Club, a program for teens ages 13-17 interested in learning about animal welfare and becoming volunteers at the shelter before they turn 18. Campers enjoyed presentations by some of our fabulous speakers including the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife Karelian Bear Dogs, and Karen Briskey with her therapy horse. Also among the festivities were numerous dog agility demos by members of our community, and campers were invited to cheer on their furry friends during their run through an obstacle course. Each weekly group of new campers also conducted a food drive for our Pet Food Bank. The kids raised an astounding 2,935 pounds of pet food during eight weeks of camp. Thank you to every camper this year - you’ve helped so many animals in need!

Pet Tips
Animal Advocates A Tribute to Lillian K. Wallace Lillian Wallace lived a full life marked with passion, resilience and benevolence. Her love for family and friends extended to her love and care for her cats, who were also important members of her family. Her concern for animals led Lillian to include Seattle Humane as a beneficiary of her estate, ensuring her legacy would live on by helping pets in need. Lillian’s life took her all over the country and world. The eldest of three children, she grew up in Seattle but was transferred to a private girls’ school in Nagano Prefecture in Japan. With the advent of WWII, U.S. students were sent home and Lillian boarded one of the last ships to leave Japan. As a result of the War Relocation Act, which placed Japanese residents living on the West Coast into internment camps, she and her family were sent to Camp Minidoka in Idaho. She was later relocated to Michigan and began work at the University Hospital. Eventually Lillian returned “home” to Seattle and filled her retirement years with friends, great adventure and generous volunteer work. Up until her recent passing at age 93, Lillian was known for her compassion and loving heart. Thanks to Lillian’s generosity, the animals in the care of Seattle Humane will continue to benefit from Lillian’s gift for many years to come. Black Pets: Dispelling the Myths Did you know that black-colored pets are adopted half as often as other pets? Why? It could be that there are simply more black pets in shelters, but there are also social and physical factors known to cause adopters to overlook black pets in favor of their more colorful counterparts. This phenomenon is known among animal rescue organizations as the Black Pet Syndrome. Black-colored pets can often be difficult to photograph, causing their sweet features like dimples and eyebrows to disappear. This causes them to be seen as plain, common or expressionless animals, which certainly isn’t true! In addition to their darker appearance, black pets have been attributed with superstition throughout history and in popular media. Black cats were once thought to cause bad luck, and black dogs have played many a villain in books and movies like the “Harry Potter” series and “The Hounds of Baskerville.” Whatever the reason may be, there are ways to help dispel the myth about black pets – just look closer! Admire their shiny coats, slight subtleties in color, striking eyes and their amazing personalities. Next time you’re looking to add a furry friend to the family, consider a black-colored pet and join Seattle Humane Society’s Black Cat & Black Dog Club on Facebook to share your pet’s stories, photos and video with other members. Better yet – tell everyone you know to befriend a black pet – they’ll soon realize that these pets are the most expressive of them all! Connect with Seattle Humane’s Black Cat & Dog Club on Facebook: • facebook.com/groups/blackpetsclub/ Celebrate Black Cats at Seattle Humane: • Black Cat Friday, Nov. 28 | Fee-waived adoptions for every all black, black-speckled, black-spotted and black-striped cat or kitten.

Pet Project Anniversary
Seattle Humane Society is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pet Project, which provides food and primary veterinary care to more than 200 pets belonging to people disabled by HIV/AIDS. The program matches clients with volunteers who deliver monthly pet food and supplies, and holds bi-monthly veterinary clinics so that pets can get annual exams, vaccinations, flea medicines and dental cleanings. The goal is to keep people and pets together when the comfort of a pet is needed most. All services and supplies are donated or purchased with donated funds.
Dennis’ cat, Edwin, giving him love.
Dennis, a client of Pet Project for more than four years, had relied on the program for the care of his cat Ruffer, his companion for nearly 18 years. When Ruffer fell ill, we provided him with medication to keep him comfortable for the duration of his life. Dennis said this care would have been impossible for him to afford, due to his own medical expenses. After Ruffer passed, our staff united Dennis with Edwin, a 2-year-old tuxedo cat, who was also in need of a loving friend when his previous owners could no longer care for him. “When I was ready to welcome a new pet into my life, I went to Seattle Humane and met with dozens of cats,” said Dennis. “Edwin came up to me and plopped right on my lap. It was in that moment that I knew he was the one. Edwin gives me unconditional love and affection, and it’s great for me to have someone to look after. It’s comforting to know that he’s always going to be taken care of.” Russell, a client of Pet Project since 1995, also relies on the program to care for his dearly loved dog, Delores. “This is a fantastic service – for people like me, it puts our minds at ease, because we don’t have the exorbitant funds for vet fees,” said Russell. “Having a pet brings me companionship...and Delores helps me get outside of myself. I have to take her out, walk her, and feed her, and she brings socialization to my life. I’d be lost without her, even though she has me wrapped around her paw.”
Russell and his companion, Delores, depend on Pet Project to keep them together.
Last May, during Seattle Humane’s annual fundraiser Tuxes & Tails, animal lovers came together to raise more than $570,000 for the shelter’s community outreach programs serving clients like Dennis and Russell who depend on the Pet Project program and Pet Food Bank. The funds will also allow the shelter to expand its services to low-income cancer patients referred by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. “It’s been our mission to give people and their pets the chance they deserve to stay together,” said Seattle Humane CEO David Loewe. “Now, thanks to the generous support of our donors who have helped to fund this program, we can ensure they will not be forced to give up their pets when they need them most.”

A Second Chance for a Special Pup
Small but Strong: A Dog Named Maxamillion
Here at Seattle Humane, many of us came to know and love a special, sweet puppy named Phoebe. A 16-week-old Labrador Retriever mix, Phoebe was surrendered to Seattle Humane when her owners were unable to care for her medical condition, which caused vomiting for the two months she was in their care. Our veterinary staff immediately performed testing necessary to diagnose and treat her. We discovered that Phoebe suffered from megaesophagus, a condition in which her esophagus was enlarged and therefore unable to properly move food into her stomach. One of our loving foster parents, who had extensive experience with caring for dogs with megaesophagus, agreed to foster little Phoebe. In no time, Phoebe’s foster mom had her trained to use a specially-built chair for this condition, which kept her upright during and immediately following her meals. Phoebe proved to be a sweet and eager-to-please puppy, bonding easily with the cats and other dog in the home. Phoebe made great progress while in foster care, and was soon ready to be adopted by a family of her own. We knew it would take a very special adopter to be the perfect match for this pup, and our dreams for Phoebe’s happy ending soon came true. A former Washington State University veterinary student, who received training at the shelter and is now a practicing veterinarian, remembered Phoebe and came back to adopt her! Phoebe – now Harriet – is doing well, according to her new family. She has gained weight, is confident and friendly, and has become the star of the neighborhood, attracting friends everywhere she goes. Phoebe’s condition will be a lifelong one, but because of the generosity of our community, she has been afforded a second chance at the happy life every dog deserves.
For a dog with such a gentle, loving and often silly nature, Maxamillion sure didn’t look the part. He suffered from severe allergies, causing his once fluffy coat to fall out in patches, and leaving itchy, painful scabs all over his tiny body. His former family could no longer provide the care he needed, and they surrendered Maxamillion to Seattle Humane, in hopes that we could provide relief for this very special dog.
Max was surrendered to us nearly hairless, suffering from severe allergies.
Our veterinary team discovered that Max, a 5-year-old Pomeranian mix, needed a special diet, medication and formulated baths to ease the symptoms of his allergies. The healing process was slow, so he spent time with an experienced volunteer foster family who helped him feel more relaxed and comfortable. With each passing day, more and more of Max’s adorable personality quirks began to emerge. We were encouraged by his progress, but as his skin improved, little Maxamillion showed signs of knee trouble common to toy breeds, and he required surgery to walk normally. Our veterinarian performed knee surgery, and Max went to hydrotherapy sessions to help him regain movement and flexibility. Despite everything Maxamillion had been through, he was still as smiley as ever! After nine months of foster care and treatment, Max was ready to meet his new family. He was quickly adopted and is now the beloved subject of many photo opportunities!
A Purrfect Match for Matilda Every now and then we receive a pet into our care whose extra-special personality takes a little longer to uncover. At Seattle Humane, we are committed to giving every pet as much time as they need for us to find them a home of their own. Matilda is an example of a kitty who needed that extra time and patience to help her blossom. She was surrendered to us by her owners when they were unable to meet her behavioral needs. Easily prone to stress, Matilda did not adjust well to her family’s travel schedule and needed a quieter home. When Matilda first arrived, she was afraid of other cats at the shelter and was losing weight. Our staff worked to calm her and earn her trust, giving her as much time as needed to settle in. Our veterinary team also discovered she was in pain and needed several dental extractions to feel better. While Matilda was with us, she quickly became a staff favorite for the strong, but humorous, personality that slowly emerged. She spent three years in our care before a family came looking specifically for a cat who may have been overlooked by others. Matilda must have recognized the potential, as she turned on the charm and was more outgoing than ever when the family met her. Bolstered by the enthusiastic input of a dedicated volunteer who had fostered Matilda, the family decided that she would be a wonderful addition to their home. It was a joyful day here at Seattle Humane to see this girl finally meet her purrfect match! 8

Letters from Adopters Hi there,
Hello SHS!
I just wanted to let you know that Caramel (now Coco) is having an amazing time with us. She is one of the cuddliest dogs we’ve ever seen. She surprised us by being incredibly well behaved around the house. Now her days are full of exercise and a ton of sleep. Thanks so much for doing what you do. We love her so much. Thanks for helping us find our new friend for life!
My husband and I adopted Norman (formally Gnomeo) from your shelter in March of this year and wanted you to have an update! We came to the shelter without the intent to take home a cat that day, but Norman took to us right when we entered the cat library and we couldn’t resist. We fell in love with the kink in his tail and his sweet little paws.
Zee & Ken
Norman loves to take long naps on his comfy bench by the window, loves to make many strange meowing/purring noises, play hide-and-seek in the bathtub, use the couch as a jungle gym and wake us up in the morning for a snuggle. We’re very happy to give him a stable and happy life! Thank you for introducing us- everyone at the shelter was very helpful and pleasant!
Hello!
Tara & Chris
Just about a year ago, we adopted Pemba from the Seattle Humane Society. I wanted to let you and your team know how he’s doing! When we came in, we had recently lost our 15-year-old kitty, Minerva, and our house felt so empty that we knew we needed to give another cat a home. We came to the Seattle Humane with a list of cat names from the website that seemed like good matches, but we didn’t quite feel the connection with any of them. The member of your team who was showing us around thought she might have the perfect cat for us, so she took us to a room and introduced us to a handsome and fluffy gentleman named Pemba. We like to say that Pemba picked us. We gave him snuggles and agreed that he was a sweetheart. We wanted to check out one more cat but then, as my husband bent over to pet another cat, Pemba jumped up onto his back without using claws as if to say, “Don’t leave! I’m coming with you!” Well, that was that! Since the adoption center was closing, we put a hold on Pemba and made arrangements to pick him up the next morning. At first he wasn’t quite sure of the new home, but soon, he was strutting around like he owned the place. He’s a friendly, sociable cat, and everyone loves him. When we have company, he’s eager to greet them and give them snuggles. His favorite perch is my shoulder when I’m sitting on the couch. A few months after adopting Pemba, we had a bit of a scare. He fell from the couch and badly broke his front right leg. It turned out that he had an aggressive bone cancer. After getting a few different opinions and determining that, as far as we could tell, the cancer hadn’t spread to his other organs, we decided to amputate the leg to give him the best chance possible. I’m happy to report that 9 months after his surgery, he is a happy, healthy cat who still wants to snuggle constantly! He has adapted well to being “tri-pawed” and can run and jump just as well as he could with four paws (although he does look a bit like a rabbit when he’s racing down the hallway). I’ve attached a few pictures for you to share with your team. Hopefully, some of the people there still remember Pemba! He has a great life, and we love him to pieces.
Hello, We wanted to thank you and share our wonderful adoption story of King (formerly Canelo). We had lost a dear dog, Ollie, six months before and we wanted a companion for our dog Hera. We camp and travel a lot so we thought “small” and “easy upkeep” when we entered the shelter. That is certainly not what King had in mind! He gave my husband, Larry, a wide-eyed plea of “it’s you and me, dude” and the rest is history. King is such a great dog. He is so happy and loves to chase the ball or just run on the trails in our neighborhood. Due to his crazy rocker hair, our friends say he is the only dog that came from the shelter with his own t-top Camaro! Thanks again for all you do for animals! Another happy tails ending!

Hello, I wanted to follow-up on my adoption of Monsoon, a kitten from a MaxMobile event at Starbucks on July 23. I wanted to share some photos, and let you know how well he has settled in. He settled in extremely well the first day really! I have three dogs and his confidence and personality works great with my dogs. He is such a great kitty and I’m so very impressed with him...and so is my vet! I could not have picked better. In particular, Tilly, my 3-year-old Border Collie, and Monsoon get along very well and have become play buddies!
