Dear Animal Lover, Welcome to our 23rd annual Tuxes & Tails! Thank you for joining us for the most spectacular and “barked about” charity event of the year, celebrating the life-saving work of Seattle Humane Society. For 23 years, caring and generous donors like you have attended our gala to help Seattle Humane Society raise funds for the care of thousands of orphaned and abandoned pets in our community. We have saved more lives, adopted more pets, and spayed and neutered more animals than any other shelter in the region — all because of your generous support! Thanks to your commitment to our mission, Seattle Humane Society reached a number of record-setting milestones in 2011, making it the most successful in our 115-year history:

• 96.5 percent save rate — an all-time high! • 5,926 animals placed — the most adoptions in a single year since 1897 • 1,900 animals transferred through our Life-Saver Program • 4,483 animals cared for in loving foster homes • 2,300 low-fee spay/neuter surgeries for pets in the community • Our 100,000th spay/neuter surgery • 183,000 hours donated by volunteers • 162,000 pounds of pet food distributed through our Pet Food Bank Our accomplishments would not be possible without you. Thanks to your support, we will save more lives and bring even more people and pets together in the year ahead. We hope you have a wonderful time this evening. On behalf of all the cats, dogs, and critters who will benefit, we thank you for your compassion, your commitment and your generosity. Sincerely,

David Loewe Chief Executive Officer

John M. Corby Chair, Board of Directors 7

The Seattle Humane Society’s mission is bringing people and pets together and keeping them together, and we’ve been doing just that since 1897. We are an independent, donor-funded nonprofit animal welfare organization and the largest private animal shelter in King County. We save thousands of abandoned, stray and surrendered pets in our community every year, and find loving homes for every healthy and adoptable animal who enters our doors. We have no time limits, and we are the safety net for dogs and cats who have treatable conditions, or are considered too old to place by many other shelters. Last fiscal year, we saved 2,049 animals from municipal shelters and rescues through our Life-Saver Program. For pets in need of extra help, we provide medical treatment and behavioral retraining to ensure that every adoptable animal thrives in their new home. The Seattle Humane Society is funded primarily by private contributions. We receive no taxpayer funds from local, state or federal government agencies. We save more animals’ lives, place more pets in homes and perform more spay/neuter surgeries than any other private shelter in King County. We are the region’s go-to destination for everything pet-related, offering training classes, a Pet Food Bank for low-income pet owners, low-fee spay/neuter, a Teen Club, summer camp, pet loss support, rescue services and more. For more information, visit our website at seattlehumane.org.

Adopting a Pet at Tuxes & Tails Tuxes & Tails highlights the many wonderful shelter guests the Seattle Humane Society offers for adoption. Tonight you may meet the perfect pet for your family. Although we will not be completing any adoptions at Tuxes & Tails, you will have the opportunity to place a hold on a specific animal tonight and complete the adoption at the shelter on Sunday, May 13. Here’s how you can adopt a new family member you meet at Tuxes & Tails: 1. Visit with our staff adoption advisor at the Tuxes & Tails adoption booth and complete a preadoption questionnaire. The adoption booth will be open from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The advisor will go over the adoption procedures with you, and will also have detailed information about the shelter guests you’ll meet at Tuxes & Tails. 2. Place a courtesy Tuxes & Tails hold on the animal you would like to adopt. There is no fee to do this. We will take two holds for each animal on a first-come, first-served basis. The first hold expires on Sunday, May 13, at 12:00 noon. If that person does not adopt the animal, the person with the second hold will have the next opportunity to adopt the pet from 12:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 13. 3. The Seattle Humane Society will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 13, exclusively for Tuxes & Tails guests. You may adopt any animal at the shelter during this time if they do not have holds on them, whether or not they appeared at Tuxes & Tails. If you go home and decide to release your hold, please contact the shelter right away at (425) 649-7562 to make the pet available to the next person on the list.

Bid on Your Centerpiece Tonight’s centerpiece donation will benefit medical funds for cats and dogs at Seattle Humane Society: Lexus Fund for Shelter Dogs Started by Jim and Bet Schuler, the Lexus Fund allows us to provide dogs with the extra medical care for dogs suffering from common injuries such as a broken leg, an infection, or a broken tooth.

Keith D. Grinstein Memorial Fund Started by a small group of close friends in honor of Keith D. Grinstein, the Grinstein Fund provides cats with the extra medical care they need to be healthy, happy and adoptable. You will be able to contribute to these funds using your BidPal device or smartphone prior to the start of the live auction. Each donation will be split between the two funds. To donate, click on the Centerpiece button on the bottom left of your screen and choose your contribution amount. The bidder who donates the highest amount at each table will win the centerpiece. You will be notified of the top bidder during dinner. Following the centerpiece auction, the auctioneer will notify all guests that volunteers will be coming around to collect your devices prior to the start of the live auction. Please have the blue BidPal devices available for pick up on your table. Thank you for supporting the animals! 13

Thumbelina’s Story

T

humbelina, a 6-month-old black kitten, was brought to us in December 2010 with seven littermates. After we spayed and neutered, microchipped and vaccinated them, all of the kittens were adopted right away … except for Thumbelina. The runt of the litter, Thumbelina was very petite and shied away from affection out of fear. We placed her in a loving volunteer foster home where, for several months, she learned how to socialize with people and bond with other kitties. Her confidence boosted, Thumbelina was adopted in August 2011. Today, she enjoys snuggling with her new feline brother, Jack, and her adopters write, “Thumbelina is doing great and we love her. She sleeps on my legs at night and loves to be petted. Thanks for giving us this precious girl. She is the perfect fit for our family and is one of us now!”

Grizzly & Cozy’s Story

G

rizzly and Cozy, two 6-year-old purebred Akita siblings, were surrendered to Seattle Humane in July 2011 when their owner had to move and could not take his furry friends along. We wanted to keep this bonded pair together. Weighing more than 100 pounds each, this brother-sister duo needed an adopter who understood Akitas and had a home big enough for them! One month later, a man spotted Grizzly and Cozy on our website and came to meet them. They were a perfect match! These fuzzy siblings now enjoy one acre of land and a loving home in Port Townsend.

Seattle Humane Society’s Wine Support the animals at Seattle Humane Society with our delicious Whiskers White or Tail Waggin’ Red wines! Whiskers White is a 2009 blend from Columbia Valley: 58% Viognier, 30% Rousanne, 12% Semillon. Aromas of ripe pear, floral and citrus continue to develop with flavors of apricot, green apple and caramel. The grapes were hand-picked, whole cluster pressed and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to provide clean flavors, balanced acidity and a lengthy finish. This year, our Tail Waggin’ Red is a 2009 blend from Columbia Valley: 42% Grenache, 42% Mourvedre, 16% Syrah. It exhibits layers of delicious berries, alluringly earthy spices and crushed violets with hints of cocoa powder and licorice with a smoky edge. Tail Waggin’ Red has a sleek, concentrated texture with tannins that are silky and substantial with a decadent, lingering finish. Proceeds benefit the animals in our care. Northwest Cellars will be on hand during the silent auction to provide tastings and take orders. Wine will be available for pickup at Northwest Cellars or at the Seattle Humane Society following the event. Single bottle: $20 | Case: $225

Angel’s Story

A

ngel, a 10-year-old pure white kitty, was brought to Seattle Humane when her owner fell ill and could no longer care for her. Having lost all she had ever known, Angel was understandably unsure of her new surroundings and shied away from affection. Angel’s shyness did not endear her to potential adopters, but we knew from her foster parents that Angel just needed time to come out of her shell. In a home environment, she’s a loving lap cat who adores affection. In October 2011, after nearly two years in our care, Angel’s new family finally found her. A couple came to the shelter and visited with Angel in one of our kitty condos. After falling in love with Angel’s sweet demeanor and her story, they took her home where she will be adored throughout her golden years.

Stu’s Story

S

tu, a 6-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix, was transferred to the Seattle Humane Society from another shelter nearly five years ago. When Ali, our resident agility instructor, met Stu she fell in love with his intelligence and joie de vivre and decided to adopt him. Now 11 years old, Stu (renamed Toshi) has just qualified for the Canine Performance Events Agility Nationals in June 2012. As Ali says, "Never underestimate what you can do with your older adopted dog." We'll all be rooting for you,Toshi!

Salsa & Gaucho’s Story

S

alsa and Gaucho were brought to the Seattle Humane Society as kittens just two months old. Attached at the hip, this dynamic duo seemed to hatch a plan to find their new family. Salsa and Gaucho’s adopters recalled how they met their new pets: “My husband and I came in to adopt a cat and when we were filling out paperwork these two 8-week-old littermates just kept meowing at us from their cubbies the whole time! We knew right away that they were the kitties for us.” Salsa and Gaucho were adopted in January 2012 and are inseparable.

Jack’s Story

J

ack, a 1-year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever mix, was found fending for himself on the streets of Renton and brought to safety at the Seattle Humane Society in October 2011. Young, lively, and full of energy, Jack needed an active family who could keep up with him. Smitten by his good looks, many adopters were interested in Jack but unable to give him the daily exercise he needed. One day in January, a couple came to the shelter and told our adoptions team, “We’re looking for a high energy dog who can keep up with us.” We had just the dog! Today, Jack (now Porter) enjoys living life to the fullest with his new family. His adopters write, “Porter is doing great. Here he is with his new partner in crime (Cedar, a golden Lab mix) having a blast at the beach following a 5-mile hike. I think he has found his happy place. Thanks again for the work you do!”

3083 How I See the World by Campbell the Cat

Three-year-old Campbell’s namesake is a tribute to her remarkable survival. Fending for herself on the streets, Campbell was searching for food when her head became lodged in a soup can. Her airways had been blocked and she was struggling to breathe when a kind person found her and rushed her to a nearby shelter. The can was removed and Campbell was treated for severe dehydration. When the shelter could not find a home for Campbell, Seattle Humane Society stepped up to help. We took her in, removed her heavy matting and repaired several lacerations. While she was on the road to physical recovery, Campbell was still wary of affection so we placed her in a loving foster home. Her foster family reports that with a little time, Campbell began to seek out pets and now prefers to be the center of attention! Campbell is an inspiring example of how Seattle Humane helps pets become happy, healthy, and ready for homes of their own. Campbell’s unwavering spirit helped her create this year’s “How I See the World.” Fair market value: $100. A special thank you to artist Hill Kowalski for creating the backdrop in order for Campbell to add her artistic touch. www.hill-kowalski.com Value: Priceless Donor: Hill Kowalski

21 Fund-A-Need At Seattle Humane Society, we are continuously challenging ourselves to do more to end pet homelessness in our community. This year we have set a spectacular new goal, and we think you can help us reach it: Doubling the number of lowfee spay/neuter surgeries that we provide to pets belonging to low-income families. Last year we performed 2,500 public surgeries, more than any other animal welfare organization in King County. With your support of this year’s Fund-A-Need we will double our public spay/neuter surgeries to 5,000 a year, more than all other animal welfare agencies in King County combined. “Every year, thousands of stray, homeless and abandoned animals arrive in shelters due to unwanted births that could have been easily prevented,” said CEO David Loewe. “Seattle Humane is taking the lead to solve this tragic problem by offering low-fee, high-quality spay/ neuter for families in the community who want to be responsible pet owners and spay and neuter their pets, but cannot afford to.” Seattle Humane Society’s ability to perform more spay/neuter surgeries for public pets is currently limited by a lack of post-surgery recovery space for animals. Our 2012 Fund-A-Need goal of $330,000 will fund a remodel and expansion of our Recovery Center that will triple recovery space and fund a second shift of veterinarians to perform the procedures. “We are operating at some of the highest levels in the nation in terms of our save rate, animals in foster care, and pets placed into homes,” Loewe said. “The logical next step is solving pet overpopulation in our

area and increasing public services in order to achieve it.” Seattle Humane Society is already known as a leader in the spay/ neuter movement, celebrating its 100,000th spay/neuter surgery last year, and ensuring that every dog and cat adopted from our shelter is fixed before being placed into a home. We offer a variety of free spay/ neuter programs to the public including Mom’s Last Litter, a program that provides free spay/neuter surgeries for pet parents and their litters, and a free spay/neuter program for Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes in King County. Last year, we spayed 112 moms (and dads!) and 769 Pit Bulls and Pit mixes in our community. A combined total of 6,000 spay/neuters of shelter animals and public animals were performed last year, and this year’s goal is to reach 9,000 – 5,000 of them provided to public pets, thanks to your support for this year’s Fund-A-Need. Look at what your donations will do: $25,000 will fund spay/neuter surgeries for 250 dogs or 425 cats, preventing the birth of thousands of unwanted pets each year $15,000 will fund two full weeks of spay/neuter procedures for pets from low-income families $10,000 will fund spay/neuter surgeries for 100 dogs or 175 cats $2,500 will fund spay/neuter surgeries for 10 Mom’s Last Litter groups $1,000 will fund a full day of public spay/neuter surgeries, averaging 13 procedures

How I See the World from Lulu the Dog

Lulu, a 3-year-old Poodle mix in frail condition, was transferred to Seattle Humane from another shelter where she had run out of time. Lulu came to us missing her front left leg, was terribly underweight and struggling to feed her nine newborn puppies. We placed her in a foster home but after just four weeks, Lulu stopped nursing her pups. Our veterinary team discovered that she had a severe infection in her breast gland, making nursing very painful and virtually impossible. Lulu’s puppies received round-the-clock bottle feedings thanks to dedicated volunteers while their mama underwent immediate treatment. Our veterinary team provided Lulu with pain medication and antibiotics, while keeping a watchful eye on her condition. In less than two weeks, our collaborative team effort restored Lulu back to health! Lulu was then given all the time she needed to recover in foster care. Fearful at first, she learned to trust the people who had helped her and to play with two resident Bernese Mountain dogs. Today, Lulu is happy and healthy, as are her nine puppies! Value: Priceless
