Dear Animal Lover, Welcome to our 25th annual Tuxes & Tails! Thank you for celebrating this incredible event with us. Tonight’s spectacular silver anniversary gala is dedicated to the life-saving work of Seattle Humane Society. For 25 years, caring and generous donors like you have attended our gala to help Seattle Humane Society raise funds for the care of thousands of orphaned and abandoned pets in our community. We have saved more lives, adopted more pets, and spayed and neutered more animals than any other agency in the region–all because of your outstanding commitment! Our accomplishments in fiscal year 2013–2014 showcase record-setting milestones and demonstrate how far we’ve come in our 117-year history: • 97.91 percent save rate — one of the highest in the nation for a shelter of our size • 6,883 dogs, cats and critters were placed into homes and rescues • 5,333 pets cared for in nurturing volunteer foster homes • 2,552 spay/neuter surgeries for pets in low-income families • 210,000 hours donated by our volunteers • 3,489 animals rescued through our Life-Saver Rescue Program • 4,000 pounds of pet food distributed weekly through our Pet Food Bank • Awarded the coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator for the fifth consecutive year Without you, our accomplishments would not be possible. With your support, we will save more lives and bring even more people and pets together in the year ahead. We hope you enjoy and celebrate the evening ahead. On behalf of all the cats, dogs, and critters who will benefit, we thank you for your compassion, your commitment, and your generosity. Sincerely,
David Loewe Chief Executive Officer

The Seattle Humane Society’s mission is bringing people and pets together and keeping them together, and we’ve been doing just that since 1897. We are an independent, donor-funded nonprofit animal welfare organization and the largest private animal shelter in King County. We save thousands of abandoned, stray and surrendered pets in our community every year, and find loving homes for every healthy and adoptable animal who enters our doors. We have no time limits, and we are the safety net for dogs and cats who have treatable conditions, or are considered too old to place by many other shelters. For pets in need of extra help, we provide medical treatment and behavioral training to ensure that every adoptable animal thrives in their new home. The Seattle Humane Society and the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine (WSU) are very proud of the success of a new partnership to help shelter pets in our care. In 2013, Seattle Humane welcomed more than 50 fourth-year visiting veterinary students to our campus. During their two-week rotation at our shelter, each student received hands-on training from Seattle Humane veterinarians. The students spent 50 hours each week treating animal patients in intensive care, assisting in surgery and working on resolving various medical cases. In this first year of the program, WSU visiting veterinary students filled the role of primary surgeon on more than 1,100 total surgeries. For more information about all of our shelter animals and programs, visit our website at seattlehumane.org.

Seattle Humane Society Labeled Wine Savor our very own labeled Whiskers White and Tail Waggin’ Red wines in support of the animals at the Seattle Humane Society! 2012 Chardonnay – full bodied and richly textured with a lovely pale gold hue, this chardonnay displays a purity of fruit with flavors of apple, pear and hazelnuts. Persistent finish of fresh herbs, lively acidity and just a touch of butter! 2010 Merlot - a dry, fruity merlot that opens with a nose of sweet cherry, strawberry fruit leather and green peppercorn. There is a subtle spiciness here along with hints of cocoa, leather, black plum and earth. Bold tannins now will mellow with cellaring. These delicious wines are available to drink at our Top Dog and General tables during the event. You can purchase a bottle to take home at Tuxes & Tails next to the Hidden Wine Pull or order a case available for pick up at SHS or Northwest Cellars in Kirkland following the event. Single bottle: $20 | Case: $225

Harlem’s Story Harlem, a 5-year-old tuxedo kitty, was surrendered to Seattle Humane when his family could no longer afford his care. He needed a special diet to maintain his digestive health. Harlem was tentative and shy when he first arrived, refusing to eat his new food. Our veterinary team found that Harlem also had a few teeth that caused him discomfort and needed to be extracted. After these teeth were removed, Harlem went to live with a volunteer foster family where he was more comfortable and slowly began to eat. His foster family had cats of their own, and Harlem quickly bonded with the youngest resident cat who snuggled and groomed him often. With a healthy set of teeth, a new diet, and lots of TLC from his foster family, Harlem was soon ready for adoption. Upon returning to the shelter, a volunteer spotted his irresistibly pink nose and asked about this special boy. Her cats had the same dietary needs as Harlem, so she understood exactly what he needed to be healthy and happy. Once she got a few chin rubs in, she knew Harlem was her cat. She joyfully welcomed her new companion into her life, and from what we hear, he’s pretty happy, too!

Betty’s Story This 6-year-old cutie is Betty, a Maltese mix with the sweetest disposition. Betty was suffering from a skin infection, which caused her to lose hair and have dry, itchy skin. Her body was covered in scabs from the itching, making her even more uncomfortable. She needed medication, frequent baths and more importantly, time. The time and resources needed to make Betty healthy again were not available at the shelter she was surrendered to, so she was transferred to Seattle Humane for treatment through our Life-Saver Rescue Program. Once she arrived, our veterinary team tended to Betty, giving her medication to soothe and treat her itchy skin. With medication and formulated shampoo, Betty’s scabs healed and she looked and felt much better. We didn’t waste any time and Betty was soon available for adoption. As expected, it only took three days for Betty to be adopted by a loving family.

Honey’s Story You may never have met a cat as friendly and as cute as Honey. She’s a 7-year-old Persian cat with a unique tortoiseshell coat and another endearing feature you may have noticed… her underbite! Honey was surrendered by her family because she was bullied by the other pets in the home. They wanted to give Honey a better life, where she would be doted on and free to roam the house without concern. Our veterinary team tended to Honey’s teeth, cleaning and polishing them, and then she was made available for adoption. We took this striking photo of Honey, and featured her as a weekly Media Star where she appeared in local publications and on Seattle Humane’s Facebook page. Those two front teeth propelled Honey into instant stardom! Honey’s adopter heard about her from a friend and raced down to the shelter to adopt. Today, Honey is loved and cherished in a home of her very own.

Anastasia’s Story Anastasia, a 2-year-old Pomeranian/Yorkshire Terrier mix, was surrendered to Seattle Humane when her family could no longer keep her. She came to us as a six-pound ball of matted fluff in need of grooming, a good diet and a thorough teeth cleaning. We started her right away on nutritious food, removed the mats in her fur, and our veterinary team cleaned and polished all of her teeth. Anastasia was looking and feeling as good as new! Since most of Anastasia’s hair was cut short, we put her in a fashionable fleece sweater to keep her warm. This contributed to her getting noticed by her new family who thought she was just the cutest dog in pink argyle. Her sweet nature, curlicue tail, and her overall unique look didn’t hurt either. You couldn’t help but smile when you laid eyes on this girl! Anastasia is now busy giving and receiving lots of love and puppy kisses with her new family.

Suzanne’s Story Suzanne, a striking 10-year-old tabby cat, was transferred to Seattle Humane from another shelter through our Life-Saver Rescue Program when it was discovered that she had early kidney disease. Her former shelter did not have the resources to care for her, and because of her age they were worried she would be overlooked for younger cats and kittens. Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to give Suzanne extra time for us to monitor her kidney function and to provide her with the special diet she needed. Suzanne was initially overwhelmed with the new changes in her life, but our dedicated staff and volunteers worked with Suzanne to ease her stress. They played with her and taught her that attention from people was a positive commodity. With a little extra care, she was ready to be a part of her own loving family. A cat-savvy adopter fell in love with Suzanne and welcomed her into their household – quirks and all!

Place a courtesy Tuxes & Tails hold on the animal you would like to adopt without a fee. We will take two holds for each animal on a first-come, first-served basis. The first hold expires on Sunday, May 11, at 12:00 noon. If that person does not adopt the animal, the person with the second hold will have the next opportunity to adopt the pet from 12:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 11. 3. Fund-A-Program - Kitten/Cat Foster Care
With your support, you can help fund our cat and kitten foster care for 2014/2015. Each year we rescue litters of kittens, injured cats, and pregnant or nursing mother cats - often our most vulnerable group of pets. At Seattle Humane Society, we are able to expand the walls of our shelter with the help of volunteers in our community willing to open their homes to these cats and kittens. We provide our foster parents with the supplies they need including food, supplements, feeding bowls, medications, toys, beds, and scales to ensure the pets are eating and gaining weight. Once these pets are ready, they are then made available for adoption and we find them new loving homes. With your help, we can continue to support this program that saves thousands of pets’ lives each year. Each “Fund-A-Program” purchase is 100 percent tax-deductible and will help support cat and kitten foster care. Fund-A-Program: $100

Fund-A-Program - Puppy/Dog Foster Care
With your support, you can help fund our dog and puppy foster care for 2014/2015. Each year we rescue litters of puppies, injured dogs, and pregnant or nursing mother dogs - often our most vulnerable group of pets. At Seattle Humane Society, we are able to expand the walls of our shelter with the help of volunteers in our community willing to open their homes to these dogs. We provide our foster parents with the supplies they need including food, supplements, feeding bowls, medications, toys, beds, and scales to ensure they are eating and gaining weight. Once these pets are ready, the pets are then made available for adoption and we find them new loving homes. With your help, we can continue to support this program that saves thousands of pets’ lives each year.
Fund-A-Program: $100

Fund-A-Program - Education
Help Seattle Humane grow its childhood education programs and teach the next generation about companion animal care and compassion. Your support will help to fund these programs by covering expenses like campus tours; Humane Teen Club for kids ages 13-17; Animal Adventures Summer Camp for ages 7-12; and new programs such as Preschool Pets story time and songs for toddlers, as well as Kitty Literature, offering elementary school students the opportunity to practice their reading skills with Seattle Humane’s shelter cats.
Fund-A-Program
Each “Fund-A-Program” purchase is 100 percent tax-deductible and will help support dog and puppy foster care.
In addition, your support will help to expand our middle school outreach program, allowing us to bring humane education to teens in south King County five days a week. This outreach program will teach youth about the responsibilities of caring for pets, spay/neuter, animal body language, and the human-animal bond. Each “Fund-A-Program” purchase is 100 percent tax-deductible and will help support our Education Program. Fund-A-Program: $100

Fund-A-Need: Community Outreach Programs
Seattle Humane is widely known for providing life-saving services to pets in need. Less known, but no less important, are the “life-saving” services we provide for people who desperately need the comfort of their pets during times of financial crisis, disability and serious illness. Seattle Humane Society’s 2014 Fund-A-Need helps to provide critical pet food and vet services to thousands of pets belonging to low-income seniors, cancer patients and people disabled by HIV/AIDS. This FundA-Need ensures that thousands of people in our community will not be forced to give up their pets when they need them most. People like Bruce, whose American Staffordshire Terrier, Blu, has been his reason for living through the trials of living with HIV and AIDS and most recently, pancreatic cancer. Bruce and Blu are clients of Seattle Humane’s Pet Project, which has provided basic veterinary care and pet food to animal companions of people disabled by HIV and AIDS for 25 years. “She is my world,” said Bruce of Blu during a recent Pet Project clinic. “She’s the only reason I went through chemo and took my meds. Without her, I would have checked out a long time ago. The Pet Project has allowed me to continue on, for Blu to eat well, and for me not to worry.” With your help, the Pet Project program is being expanded this year so that low-income cancer patients will receive pet food and veterinary care for their animals. When cancer patients are enduring treatment and struggling to survive, the unconditional love and companionship of their pet is life-affirming.
