GENERAL DESIGN NOTES The design process for this project was divided into three phases: 1.- In the first phase analyzes the environmental and user’s conditions. 2.- In the second phase, passive strategies were sought, which allow achieving a certain comfort degree. Strategies such as project morphology, orientation and others. 3.- Technologies that improve the user’s experience and comfort are analyzed and implemented.

Design process

1

Elongated morphology, which 1. allows to:: - Reduce the incidence of the sun. - Capture the prevailing winds that come from the south.

2

Overall, the program is divided into two general spaces: - Public and semi-public spaces. (Semi-open) - private spaces. (Closed)

3

The project Is splitted into modules, hence able to grow give rise to a progressive house, which can grow over time, depending on the needs of the users.

4

The inclination of the Sun is studied (24°), and the walls slope with this angle to decrease sun’s incidence.

5

6

A specific program is granted for each module: - Dining room - Kitchen - Bathroom - cellars. - Bedrooms.

The building is raised from the ground, to: - Allow air circulation under it. - Avoid possible floods. - Avoid the entry of wild animals.

4.- Finally, in the forth phase, trough the information gathered and the chosen strategy, the main objective is that the bulding transmita through it’s morphology and materiality.

ARCHITECTURE NOTES The house has two areas: an opened-naturally ventilated area and an isolated area, controlled with mechanical ventilation. The open area has spaces for recreation, common in the typical houses of the Ecuadorian Amazon (dining room, living room, and hammocks area) and the isolated area with private spaces (living room, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom, double Bedroom) these spaces add up to an area of 150m2 (1689.12ft2), it also has access areas equipped with a ramp and stairs, machine room and gardens.

ARCHITECTURE NOTES The roof system consists of two roofs with a slope of 20% each inclined in opposite directions, this maximizes natural ventilation. The roof material is a 100 mm (3.93 inches)white galvanized steel sandwich panel, that prevents heat absorption in the residence. On the roof 10 photovoltaic panels and a water heater are placed.

The facades of the house are sloped 23.5 degrees, this prevents strong solar radiation on the facades, which have different passive ventilation systems, such as lattices, openings or ventilation channels. The facades have simple glass windows and a PVC frame.

The south facade is open and allows the passage of air, but its latticework inclined 30 degrees prevents the entry of light and water, this benefits the crossed ventilation, which uses the prevailing south wind. The house has universal access, it has a staircase and a ramp that allows entry to the house.

The house combines various systems with architecture, concrete, bamboo, and steel structure, floor, wall and ceiling systems that allow the exterior to be housed in private areas and the use of Bamboo Angustifolia (Guadua Angustifolia) as endemic material and with reuse potentials. It also combines the water collection and filtering system, on-site power generation with photovoltaic panels and water heating.

GENERAL DESIGN NOTES

Interior Design

The project seeks to become a resting space to be away from daily routine and hard work. It seeks to pair contemporary materials with materials of vernacular housing in this sector. Look for the contrast between natural textures (wood, bamboo ...) and chromatic related to contemporary architecture (pure, saturated and contrasting colors). The project conceives open and functional spaces, which contrast with the wealth of nature that surrounds the project. It distinguishes heights of public areas from private ones, giving a difference in scale and how space is perceived (intimate spaces and semi-open spaces). 1

OSB or Oriented Fiber Boards: - Forest use, so its manufacture has a lower impact on the environment. -Very simple recycling. -It is not usually attacked by insects.

2

Bamboo: -It is a very flexible and light material. -Your cost as raw material is low. -It is a rapidly renewable and sustainable material.

3

Ecological stucco of cal: - Based on marble sands. - High quality, elegant finish and durability over time.

4

Narrow slatted toasted bamboo board - VT: - Bamboo slats that are pressed together vertically and glued under pressure.

GENERAL MECHANICAL NOTES The equipment selected for this project is the IDEO2 325 ECOWATT, after analyzing many devices with similar characteristics, this was yet found as the one with the highest efficiency. Moreover, this equipment endures operations with minimum energetic expenditure (40W). The bypass held on this equipment, allows it to work under two different conditions: throughout the day without the use of the bypass, and at night using the bypass, reducing energetic expenditure during the last-mentioned condition, thanks to its “FREE COOLING system. Through nights, external air is colder than internal; consequently, the system drives new and sterile air inside the house, without going through an exchanger since the by-pass will be automatically activated and directly conducted to the living space.

Zero Energy Home As an alternative to the Rem Rate software to achieve efficiency, the software if the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank, “Edge (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) was used, this software has a database that can be used to measure the efficiency of the house depending on the conditions of the national context, Edge is also a tool that grants a certification recognized by the Ecuadorian legal framework to achieve EcoEfficiency standards. Below the corresponding saving graphs: The analysis with the REMRATE software ca-n be found in the corresponding chapter (Energy Efficiency). .
