ABOUT US The Edgewater Magazine is the evolutionary transformation of The Bayshore Block Magazine. Today, The Edgewater Magazine is reaching over 15,000 households and businesses from Brickell to Aventura. This rebirth has given way to a stronger magazine that supports our continued mission to showcase the vibrant, healthy and funky place that is Edgewater. We are a team of young local residents dedicated to promote the local entrepreneurship and social happenings that drive Edgewater.
EDITORIAL OVERVIEW The Edgewater Magazine is a lifestyle and community publication that covers sports, fitness, nutrition, art and fashion, and a wide range of community news through free bi-monthly issues. ear Edgewater Magazine Readers,
I am sure the rising temperature and increase in tourism activity have already gotten some, if not all, of your attention by now; but I am even more so taking an opportunity to tell you that summer is stepping in strong. Fortunately for us, Miamians, we live where most want to vacation, so no need to travel far to relish in the pleasures of the upcoming season. Thus, this issue is filled with thought out topics to stay strong, healthy, and happy this summer. For all ladies looking to shine, we have a special section with summer tips and trends by Liliana Montoya; for the boys and men who want to look hot and strong as Father’s day approaches, do not miss Rene Viera and his powerful routine. David Quiceno also steps in to share great insight about your body’s alkalinity and provides a useful list of antioxidant-rich foods. And if it gets too hot, Carolina Correa presents you with a can’t-miss craft beer spot that’s quenching the thirst of locals. 10
Now, with all the beachy fun we’ve had during Spring Break and as we dive into full summer, let’s not forget we tend to blatantly neglect our beautiful planet Earth, tainting her with the remains of our boats and parties. For this issue, I had the pleasure of meeting Rueda Miami. As you will read in the coming pages, this group is saving our piece of paradise while promoting Miami’s culture. A must-read! It is my pleasure to bring you yet another issue of The Edgewater Magazine. As always, thank you being our loyal reader!

Let’s Get the Party Started, Join the Rueda Movement A
s time goes by, life on planet Earth becomes harder. Even more so when people seem to focus more on owning luxury cars and having nice bodies rather than on the dangers to which our planet is constantly exposed. So, how can people be held accountable when there is a sense of belonging yet to be nurtured in our culture? This is where Rueda Miami begins. Rueda Miami was created in a city of cultural diversity, where about 70% of the population is foreign – Miami. The Rueda (Spanish for “Wheel”) starts rolling when we generate love for our city. By exposing the local talent, artists of different mediums and entrepreneurs, Rueda Miami can spread a message of social and environmental awareness, a “social and artistic experiment” that will build stronger communities. But, let’s be sincere here; we share articles on Facebook, we hear scientists talking about theories, but taking action is on us. Art, innovation, and parties are the best mediums to seduce #Miamians into taking action towards true appreciation for our city.
The Rueda continues to roll, and instead of sending out invitations to annual conservational speeches, we invite locals to think outside the box and get inspired in a fun and interactive way. Four times a year, Rueda Miami features local artists of mix mediums to expose social and environmental initiatives in a sublime manner. Because, what is consciousness without action? There is no reason to present a problem without giving a solution. We also make it a point to visit the ocean once a month clean the beaches and isles of Miami and recycle materials for future installations and pieces of art. Our experiment becomes a platform that reaches a broader public. Rueda Miami showcases projects of the great artists and entrepreneurs who participate in our movement by connecting them with those who will invest in them, helping to make their dreams come true. As the Rueda closes the loop, our movement grows stronger and the hopes for higher consciousness and change suddenly feel possible. Rueda Miami invites you to take action and meet the coolest people in town at our next event. We promise, you won’t leave the same. Take a look at our work through social media. Yes, change is a click away.

Taste Wynwood with a Sip of Craft Beer
A
s summer time approaches and thirsty throats meet for happy hour, it only seems natural to write about one hip place that’s taking Wynwood to a new level of recognition. This place is Wynwood Brewing Company. Located in the heart of the Arts District, Wynwood Brewing Company is Miami’s first craft production brewery.
20
Featuring a tap room, the 15-barrel brewhouse distributes Blonde and Indian Pales, the gold-medal-winner Robust Porter, barrel-aged strong ales, and a rotation of seasonal offerings. Both locals and larger corporate accounts like Whole Foods Market, Applebee’s, Miami Dolphin Stadium, American Airlines Arena, and Norwegian Cruise Lines are enjoying from the fresh and creative beer selection produced by the Brignoni Family. If you find interesting that Miami is catching up to other cities like Atlanta or Chicago with abundant craft breweries, you will want to follow the Brignoni’s adventure. “We decided to come to Wynwood for several reasons,” said Luis Brignoni, Founder. “We are truly passionate about our craft and felt that aligning with such a neighborhood would let folks know that it is very much craft beer. Every beer is brewed with love and passion to ultimately create a work of art in every glass. In addition, this is a family-owned company, a Puerto Rican family. As a family, we felt we needed to come to this neighborhood and help create jobs to the local folks and support our community.”
For a bit of history, Wynwood is known as the Puerto Rican Barrio due to the settlement of large Puerto Rican families during the 70’s and 80’s. After the garment factories left, many of the warehouses were abandoned and littered with graffiti. But in the 2000s, many artists began to paint remarkable pieces. We’ve seen galleries and some of the world’s best street artists paint phenomenal murals. Every day, you see someone ready to create a work of art in this magnificent neighborhood. Along with the growth of Wynwood, the Brignonis have made it a point to continue growing their business. In 2015, they won the grand prize of the Brewbound Startup Brewery Challenge to collaborate with Widmer Brothers Brewing to craft a new beer while receiving privileged insight to the company’s operations, including production, quality assurance and packaging. This experience has taught them two important rules: Always maintain the quality of the beer, and bring the best talent to work with you. Quench your thirst with a locally brewed beer. Quench it at Wynwood Brewing Company. Cheer, Carolina Correa 21

Gourmet. Fresh. Healthy.
Creative and and fresh ingredients - the secret to healthy, approachable and delectable dishes. Catering and Delivery Available The word “Elia” stands for olive and olive tree; symbol of peace, victory, and wisdom. On the Mediterranean coast, olive trees can be found throughout, and thriving with minimum maintenance. They can live for as much as a thousand years. Delicious and nutritious, olives and olive oil have been the core of the Mediterranean diet and cuisine since its birth. The concept behind Elia Gourmet is simple; fresh, wholesome ingredients minimally processed to develop healthy, delicious dishes. When owner Dimitris Harvalis was growing up, he was exposed to this style of cooking with his grandmother, and the word “organic” really had no meaning, as everything they prepared was organic by nature. Elia Gourmet does not have a fryer, a microwave, or a freezer, and the use of canned or processed foods is out of the question. With a thriving downtown locale, and two others in the works, Elia Gourmet brings the essence of the Mediterranean to Miami.

iami is the ultimate destination for spring breakers, beachgoers, and bikini wearers. Bikini season has officially started and it brings all the new fresh trends. Major silhouettes from the extreme cut-outs to the ongoing one-piece, from super basic to the sexy lace up. Choosing the right bikini can take some time, but finding the perfect swimsuit for your body can be a confidence booster and an investment that lasts for multiple seasons. So, be ready to catch some rays under the Sun and follow this top 8 tips to pick the bikini you will love:
1. Choose the right size. Be sure it provides all the coverage your body needs, especially if you plan to be active and with friends and family. If you are only looking to catch some rays, focus on simple shapes, less fabric and no cut-outs. 2. Look for proper bust support. Different bust sizes call for different degrees of support. Whereas smaller busts can pull off strapless tops with minimal support and no wires, a larger bust might appreciate a halter top or built-in bra. 3. Adjust to the occasion. A tiny bikini might not be the best choice if you plan to do swim laps or surfing. Pick a suit that will hold up without any issues. 4. Use colors to accentuate your natural skin tone. Black and nude tones tend to flatter lighter skin, while bright colors and pastels shine on darker skins. 5. Enhance what you most like about your body. Draw attention using bright colors, prints or patterns. Interesting details like cuts can also pull focus to your assets! 6. Details are in. Use bows, ruffles, ties, beads, or textures to add volume to areas like your bust or hips. Use shirring or ruched fabrics to minimize areas like the waist. 7. Play with shapes to create illusions. High-waist bottoms can elongate legs. A sweetheart cut or curved neckline can flatter a smaller bust. A one-piece can minimize a larger waist, break up a long torso, and add curves. Vertical stripes can create an illusion of a taller and slimmer figure, while horizon stripes can get you a curvy silhouette. 8. Focus on the right camouflage. Use solid and darker colors on areas that you’d like to stay subdued.

8 Tips to Shining All Summer Long! Photos By: Freddy Koh
For added summer success, complement these tips with the 2016 trends as suggested by Liliana Montoya: • Gold & Nude…Gold is probably the most luxurious way to enter the beach. Gold can be bright. Use a darker shade for a luxury look while chilling on the beach or by the poolside. • Sequins…It's all about the gorgeous “mermaid” inspiration. It's sparkly and shimmery, sophisticated and luxurious, and absolutely stunning, day or night. • Prints…A common sight of the 2016 swimsuits season, whether we are looking at single piece or bikinis. Gorgeous ethnic designs appear with meticulous handcrafted details and beads. • Accessories…Beach bag essentials like sunblock, tanning lotion, simple neutral color cover-up, shade glasses, Havaianas sandals and the beach hat.

About the designer: Liliana Montoya is based in Miami Beach, Florida. Born and raised in Colombia, Liliana was awarded Designer of the Year by the Director of the Design University in her native town of Medellin. In 2006, Liliana initiates operations under her name and with a limited quantity production. A feminine line offering innovative, high-quality products and handmade embellishments. Liliana brings her unique signature reinterpreted in a new version of gaudy and symmetry in the textures, which adds luxury without ostentation. When Liliana was a child, she replaced the M from Montoya with a Heart, and it became the trademark of the brand. Each piece has a gold touched Heart that represents the passion she embraces in every single piece. Liliana reminiscences each collection with her models The “Mermaids”. The Liliana Montoya collection is featured by more exotic and gorgeous looking models, who portrait the natural beauty of a woman. The Mermaid models who represent her select market, together with the collection pieces, are on the pages of sizzling catalogs and runways like Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Funkshion Miami Fashion Week, opening of Miami Beach Centennial, Cartagena Fashion Week, and much more. Liliana Montoya Swim is a brand with tropical roots and Latin-based products for the needs of women that go unnoticed with unique bikinis. High standards, design and quality labor speak loud for each individual garment. Swimwear is probably the apparel that is tied closest to person feelings of adequacy and confidence. Because of this, my profession as an Artist/Designer actually has more of an impact on culture than most people think. Liliana Montoya Swim – Innovative. Liberating. Sexy. Living under Oxidative Stress or Enjoying an Alkaline Body? I
f you feel like your energy abandons your body and stress predominates, it’s time to check how “alkaline vs. oxidative” you are. That’s right. In an alkaline body, our organs function in harmony when our blood’s PH level is neutral, which is between 7.35 and 7.45, or alkaline, which means that the body is in homeostasis, where all the organs are working in balance. On the contrary, a body under oxidative stress is unbalanced and at risk. Oxidative stress is the accumulation of toxins and free radicals, which are byproducts of our metabolic processes. As a result, our body and organs suffer and become susceptible to Degenerative Disorders like arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, neuropathy, atherosclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer, depression, fertility problems, premature aging and DNA mutations, among others.
To help our bodies avoid oxidative stress, we ought to recur to consume foods rich in antioxidants – the molecules that prevent deterioration and give molecular stability to our cells. Here’s a quick list of fantastic antioxidant-rich foods: 1. AÇAI Berry - DNA neutralizer 2. Wheat Grass – toxin neutralizer 3. Alfalfa, Spirulina, Yohimbe, Golden Seeds, Ginger Root, Cinnamon – natural antibiotics and energy boosters 4. Green Coffee Extract – anxiety reducer, carbohydrate blocker 5. Beetroot – cleanser 6. Papaya – digestive 7. Pineapple – digestive and anti-inflammatory 8. Broccoli – cleanser and neutralizer 9. Garlic – neutralizer 10. Pistachios, walnuts, almonds – brain protection 11. Caffeine – anti depressive and appetite suppressant 12. Grapefruit – toxins neutralizer and diuretic
32
Remember, you can eat tons of antioxidants, but if you don’t drink enough water, your body will be unable to push toxins out of your system. As a rule of thumb, a normal person should drink at least of his or her body weight in ounces of water. So, get your game on and start drinking good quality water!

SUPERHERO LEGS THIS FATHER’S DAY Rene Viera CrossFit Yellow Falcon Head Coach/Program Director/Owner Father's Day is right around the corner and from firsthand experience, I know it's not easy being the superhero of the family. The concern for our family’s health and well-being often takes precedence over our own. That’s why I’d like to remind all men out there – father or not, of the often overlooked fact that we can't take care of our families if our own health is in disarray. Here's a way to sneak in a workout and maximize your efforts. Males have a pre-set genetic advantage to gain muscle and stay lean. That advantage comes in the way of a well-known hormone called Testosterone. That is not to say that women do not produce testosterone; however, to a lesser extent. So, why is this important? Well, as it relates to physical activity, using the largest muscles in our bodies (our legs) will produce the largest response in terms of testosterone produc-
tion, which will carry over to upper body exercises helping to gain muscle and obliterate fat. There are many exercises we can use to train our legs. The more common are back squat, front squat, leg press, leg extension, deadlift and leg curl. However, because of the explosive nature of most sports, coaches have been using other not-so-common means for athlete development. For example, in the NFL’s Rookie Combine, no one test of athleticism determines a player’s success rate more than the vertical leap. It is not simply about how high the athlete can jump, but about the power output produced by the lower body. With that in mind, here are a few ways to mix-up the common with the uncommon to achieve phenomenal results when training legs:
• The days you train back squats for heavy weight, try adding some box squats for doubles or triples as accessory work. • Box squats help us be explosive from the bottom of our squats. The days you do heavy deadlifts, combine them in superset format with box jumps or broad jumps. • When training front squats, add a few sets of split squat jumps. Unilateral movements require one appendage to support the load of the entire body. This in turn will have a greater benefit when the load is decided evenly. • Finally, be sure to pass just below 90° knee angle when squatting. These “deep” squats promote greater muscle mass and strength development.

WHY MIAMI METROMOVER STAYS FREE
O
n April 12th, the County Commission rejected an initiative to charge for the rides on the Metromover. It will continue to run free, but this is an issue that keeps coming back. Commissioners asked voters back in 2002 to approve a half-percent sales tax increase for local transit that year and they, in turn, promised to keep the Metromover free. Since then, they have kept their promise. But more recently, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan presented the initiative to charge for the rides. She argued that lower-income passengers that pay $2.25 to ride the bus system in Miami-Dade are subsidizing affluent downtowners. County Mayor Gimenez stressed, among other reasons, that voters were promised free rides when they voted to raise the sales tax in 2002, and that the County should keep its end of the bargain. According to Mayor Gimenez, Miami-Dade will spend nearly $533 million this year operating its transit system. If the fee were one dollar ($1), the County would collect around one million dollars ($1,000,000) a year from the Metromover. However, it would cost 40
nine million dollars ($9,000,000) just to install fare collection equipment and more personnel would also be needed. To pretend that because new luxury condominiums have been built, that downtown is now affluent residents who ride the Metromover, is just ignoring that it is mostly workers, students and tourists. Charging will encourage driving. Income from the Metromover will be less and traffic worse. Was Commissioner Barbara Jordan ready to lower the sales tax that was raised in exchange for the free Metromover? For now, the Metromover stays free, and Commissioners Barbara Jordan and Bruno Barreiro will meet to discuss the possibility of making Metrobus and Metrorail also free of charge.
