SOCIAL HAPPENINGS: WYNWOOD FARMERS MARKET 9

Diana Agudelo Editor-in-Chief

It all started with Chinese food. On a quest to satisfy my teriyaki craving, I stumbled upon a collection of 33 retail places. For three years, I never knew that these businesses existed right in front of my home. How could I have been so unaware of what’s in my own neighborhood? These businesses needed promotional help, a push or a nudge from an outside source to let them be known. They needed a magazine. In 2014, The Bayshore Block made its big debut. My team and I entered the magazine world head first and blindfolded; just a vision and drive to help navigate through this unknown territory. This simple guide for community awareness blossomed into a product worth so much more. We are growing, learning, and evolving everyday. This magazine has expanded so much that the name The Bayshore Block was no longer sufficient. 10

The rebirth of this magazine has given way to a stronger publication that supports our continued mission to showcase the vibrant, healthy, and funky place that is Edgewater. Our magazine is created with passion and extreme diligence. During the efforts of making this dream a reality, my greatest supporter has been Javier Forero. This magazine would have never gone through its metamorphic process without him. I thank you, Javier, for all your encouragement and support. On behalf of The Edgewater Magazine team, I thank you for being a part of this amazing community and allowing us to connect you with other residents and businesses.

MEET YOU IN THE BEDROOM (…for men, and the women who love them)

Dr. Brittany Martinez

O

n Valentine’s Day, once all the chocolates have been consumed and each red rose delivered, where does that leave you? Hopefully, it leaves you in the the bedroom ready for an intimate session with your partner! This holiday, the ideal combination of romance and the drive for optimal pleasure and performance should send Cupid packing up his arrows. When it comes to getting one and keeping it (an erection, that is), men should opt for shifts in lifestyle and personalized therapies, such as targeted supplements and innovative pharmaceuticals to reach optimal sexual health and performance.

At times, getting things going in the bedroom can be a complex task. For men, the pressure to perform often overshadows the enjoyment of sex. Thankfully, with preventative and regenerative measures, easier erections can be achieved, and maintained…back to enjoyment it is! Scientifically, an erection involves the brain, hormones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, immune system, and circulatory system. These systems work together to fill the erectile tissue in the penis with blood. Receiving regular check-ups to ensure these systems are in balance is vital to optimal sexual health. Additionally, there are three main reasons why men face erectile issues. These reasons are hormonal, vascular, and psychological (which also pours into physical mechanics).

Don’t Beat the Messenger Lately, it is common to hear “hormones” being tossed around. You might be wondering if they are really important, or simply a buzz. Well, important they are! Hormones are messenger molecules that influence the function of cells and tissues all over the body. This makes them critical for sexual health and overall wellbeing. Hormonal imbalances can directly impact your sex life, health, and quality of life either for better or for worse. Due to their complexity, it is always best to seek the help of a qualified medical expert trained in natural hormones (or bio-identical hormones/BHRT) to evaluate and optimize your hormonal status.

Don’t Go Breaking My…Arteries Often times, men may think their sexual challenges are due to age. Believe it or not, this is not necessarily the case. Aging is not a disease! Mostly, the root of disease is the lack of know-how, lack of resources and forgetting that we are always in choice. Commonly, people hear Cardiovascular and think “heart.” However, in actuality, Cardiovascular issues lead to inflammation and clogging of all arteries, causing 80% of erectile dysfunction! A generic way to gauge if you have been affected is by your morning erections. Daily morning erections are a good indicator your blood vessels are healthy. Being mindful of this might indicate that erectile difficulties can be a result of something other than vasculature. Solutions to these issues include lifestyle shifts, with diet having the largest impact. For strong erectile tissue, men should avoid high glycemic foods and trans fats (or processed foods). Consumption should also include foods that support the immune system, which helps to prevent oxidation that damages and clogs blood vessels. Regular exercise also supports healthy circulation amongst a host of other benefits. In conjunction with this… supplementation! Properly used supplements and hormones can literally clean and repair blood vessels, promoting optimal chances for an erection. Targeted therapies such as testosterone, curcumin, and omega 3’s obtain anti-inflammatory properties, unclogging arteries! To fight stress, build resilience, and boost energy, adaptogenic herbs get the job done. Examples of these herbs include rhodiola, ashwagandha, and ginseng.

13

Don’t Worry About a Thing Another main reason for erectile difficulties stem from cases where mental affects physical. Commonly, men affected have had a negative experience early on in their sexual development due to an unfavorable experience, unrealistic expectations, abuse, or other, and the trauma snowballed into a bigger issue because it was never properly addressed. Normally, this issue tends to affect younger men but can occur at any age. The mental trauma creates a biochemical physical response by hijacking the body’s autonomic nervous system. This system is composed of two parts: the parasympathetic system (rest, digest, and repair) and the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). In order for a man to obtain an erection, his body needs to be in parasympathetic mode instead of sympathetic. Vice versa when orgasm occurs – here the sympathetic system takes over and dominates. Simply stated, the problem occurs when these two systems swap places under high stress situations and interfere with the erection process. Bond…Oxy-Bond, that is. For those looking to take it up a notch, we have medicine to thank. Today, science offers endless innovative measures that allow men to perform their best! For example, “blue diamonds,” generic Viagra (sildenafil) can now be compounded. This means that the pill can be taken sublingually, or administered “under the tongue,” which helps dissolve faster rather than swallowing it. This helps to enhance the sexual experience by increasing spontaneity of “the act.” Compounded medications also allow doctors to change dosages making it a more personalized treatment. Another progressive option involves Oxytocin, a powerful hormone often referred to as, “the love drug.” This is a hormone that gets released naturally when we are happy, kissing, bonding, and ultimately, what is released when we orgasm, further enforcing the bond between individuals. Oxytocin, at a custom dose determined by your doctor, can be taken 5-10 minutes PRN (as needed) prior to sexual activity, and can be administered by nasal route or sublingually. Be sure to get your Oxy-Bond on full force this Valentine’s Day, then why not continue to make everyday Valentine’s Day with your newly found tools!

Luckily, with dedication and knowledge, there are solutions! In addition to daily use of adaptogens and personalized medications, exploring studied methods such as breathing techniques, yoga, and meditation successfully trains men to enter parasympathetic mode (needed for erection). A powerful tool I often recommend to patients is HRV training with InnerBalance. I love to recommend this because its easy to do and implement into every day life! Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has been studied by some of the biggest medical institutions for over 25 years. HRV provides a revolutionary biofeedback tool to help reduce stress and, therefore, sympathetic tone leading to a better sexual experience. Another thing to remember…what works for each couple may not work for you! Couples often find success with simple methods like integrating essential oils (try Ylang Ylang), candles and even music. From stress reduction techniques to adding some romance, there are lots of easy options.

Melo Group: How a Legacy of Real Estate Development is Making a Difference in the Edgewater Community

W

e love Edgewater. For many of us it’s home, our place of work, and our personal playground. Take a walk down Biscayne Boulevard; businesses coming soon, happy Miamians walking their dogs and, of course, condos that stretch beyond the clouds.

Dr. Jose Luis Ferreira de Melo •Martin, we understand Melo Group was established in Argentina. What were some of the reasons you and your family decided to move to South Florida? Our family moved to Miami as the Argentinean economy was collapsing and crime targeting the business community was on the rise. My dad [Armando Ferreira de Melo] had witnessed that cycle in his youth and didn’t want to put his family through something like that. He traveled around the world, looking for a country that would become a next home. He visited Portugal, Spain, Italy, Brazil, and so on. When my dad came here, he fell in love with Miami. It wasn’t just the weather. It was the combination of the American cultural and legal order and the city’s Hispanic nature. We care about our city and our community – we 18

So imagine what it looked like 15 years back. Before the residential buildings, before Edgewater was on the edge. The land was almost bare, not the most aesthetically pleasing area to live in. Where many saw a lost cause, Armando Ferreira de Melo saw potential. He and his sons came from Argentina and helped Edgewater transform into the neighborhood we love to revel in. The Edgewater Magazine recently had an interesting conversation with Martin Melo to learn more about the brilliant minds behind Melo Group, the development company that’s influencing change in Edgewater, and this is what he has shared:

care about our legacy and what we bring to the table to make Miami a better place. •Having international roots, what made Melo Group get involved in the development of the South Florida Market, but more particularly, Edgewater? My father started developing condominiums in Buenos Aires more than half a century ago. I remember being about four years old and playing with my toy cars in piles of sands at construction sites while my dad was at work. As small child, I would also spend time in one of the sales centers and walk buyers to the elevator that would take them to the model units. My brother, Carlos, and I grew up in this business. It is in our blood. So when we came here, it was never an option to deviate from our past, from what we knew best. We came

here to continue being developers. My dad always says ‘One who can play piano in Argentina, can also play piano in Miami.’ And he is right. We’ve always been strong believers in Edgewater – we saw its potential early on. Our firm began buying Edgewater land in 2001 when our family came here from Argentina. Back then, the area was home to a bunch of older low-rise buildings, not to mention, overrun by poverty. Many abandoned homes had been demolished, and empty lots dotted the neighborhood. We saw that the waterfront neighborhood was so close to everything in downtown Miami, Miami Beach, the Health District – South Florida’s largest employment districts – that it would one day become a hot spot. We anticipated there would be demand for residential product from residents seeking the conveniences of everything Ed-

Martin Ferreira de Melo / Carlos Ferreira de Melo gewater had to offer: living on the waterfront, sweeping views of the bay and the Miami Beach skyline, and access to Miami’s urban core. •A significant number of companies in the A/E/C industry were impacted by the recession just a few years back. How do you see the market picking up, especially in Edgewater and surrounding areas? A key factor fueling downtown Miami and the Edgewater area’s popularity among condo buyers is the rise of the Design District, which has become home to luxury retailers like Louis Vuitton and Hermes; Wynwood, home to art galleries and a satellite venue for Art Basel every December; and Midtown, a mixeduse project that has become a shopping and dining destination. Those districts have really taken on a new life in the last five years – and Edgewater is right in the middle of it all. Edgewater – and Downtown Miami in general, have become a cool place to live. You don’t have to live on the beach anymore.

•What do you think about the Edgewater community and how involved are you at the philanthropic level? Most recently, Melo Group was recognized by Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Hispanic Advisory Board for its support of the 18th Annual Cervantes Award Ceremony as a Platinum Benefactor. The event, hosted by NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler College of Education, celebrated more than a dozen distinguished educators throughout Miami-Dade County and honors individuals for their significant contribution to the education of Hispanic students and youth in the community. Melo Group was awarded a plaque for their generous contribution and for “Making a Difference in Hispanic Education.”

In 2014, the City of Miami, along with Mayor Tomas P. Regalado, presented our family with an official proclamation to Melo Group’s Jose Luis Melo, the patriarch of our firm, for his efforts in reviving South Florida’s preconstruction condo market after the 2007 real estate crash – officially declaring December 11th as “Jose Luis Melo Day.” Additionally in 2014, Melo Group sponsored Romero-Britto designed meters to help collect money for homeless people in the community. As a means of giving back to the community, Melo funded a study to assess outdoor feeding, supported collaborations with Miami DDA, Homeless Trust, and the Homeless Assistance Program and dedicated time and resources to better understand and respond to the homelessness issues surrounding their community. The meters are a reliable and accountable means to help people who are homeless because 100% of the money collected is used directly to fund additional shelter beds and expand 19

the number of indoor meal programs for the homeless. The meters sponsored by the Melo Group are located outside of their developments in Edgewater and the Miami River, and encourage residents to support the coordinated efforts to end homelessness in Miami. •As a leading developer in the residential market, how do you project Melo Group in to the future? Melo Group is a vertically-integrated firm, meaning the firm handles everything in-house – from the design process to the development/construction phase – which allows for complete control of our projects. Melo typically acts as the architect, general contractor, property manager and developer. The system has worked very well for the firm over the years, allowing Melo to complete projects on time and within budget, control construction costs and move on to the next project ahead of the real estate cycle. Also, all three principals are actively involved in the company’s day-to-day operations, especially Melo Group’s founder Jose Luis Melo – they’re all at various job sites every day. Melo Group’s development philosophy has always been to build for market demand. As the market shifted in recent years, so has Melo Group’s buildings. When they started building in Edgewater (between 2003 and 2011) the firm’s developments were tailored to local buyers and renters. Around 2011/2012 once international buyers started to show an interest in Miami’s real estate market, the firm began building luxury condo projects as well.

We all know real estate is all about location. So our next development, Aria on the Bay, in downtown Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District will be our masterpiece in this country. That part of downtown has literally been untouched for so many years – and now it’s literally transforming before our eyes. Residents will be blocks away from some of South Florida’s top destinations for world-class arts and culture, entertainment, dining and shopping. Aria on the Bay is one of the many projects Melo Group has planned for the growing Arts & Entertainment District. Melody, the firm’s newest luxury rental building, is currently rising next to the Adrienne Arsht Center and expected to open to renters in May of this year. Melo also owns several parcels of land in the immediate area surrounding the Miami-Dade School Board and Metromover Station, with plans to develop a mix of transit-oriented, market-rate rental projects, as well as luxury condominiums. 20

•How do you see projects like The Underline and Plan Z, which allow for more pedestrian use, impacting your developments in the South Florida area? We believe we’ll start to see more transit-oriented development throughout South Florida. Traffic is becoming more and more of an issue in our city and I think people who rent or buy real estate in and around downtown will start to rely more on the use of public transportation in their everyday lives. Right now, Melo Group is building hundreds of market-rate rentals in greater downtown Miami so professionals working in Downtown Miami and the Health District won’t have to commute for more than an hour to get to their homes in the suburbs every day. Our newest rental building right next to the Adrienne Arsht Center, Melody, is currently in the preleasing stage and should be completed with construction in May of this year.

Our two most recently completed rental buildings, 22 Skyview in Edgewater and Flagler on the River on the Miami River, were both full-leased in less than a month. This shows there’s clearly a demand for this kind of product. While most developers are catering to cash-rich foreigners buying luxury preconstruction Miami condos, our firm is also building quality housing that the local community can afford.

•What’s next for the Melo Group in the next couple of years? All told, Melo Group is expected to deliver approximately 3,000 residential condo and rental units throughout Greater Downtown Miami over the next few years.

THE GREENG LIFESTYLE JUICY MOVEMENT J

uicing has been around for quite a while! It isn’t until now that people have found it to be beneficial and convenient. But why?

We are in a constantly moving, fast-paced environment, where it seems that eating takes too much of our time. It has become so complicated to understand that, so we have just decided that we have NO TIME TO EAT or we just OVER EAT. The GreenG Family is here to tell you that you can change that mentality and path. But how? JUICING! Cleansing, detoxifying, fasting or juicing, you name it. Eating has never been so easy before, it’s now just a sip away from you. Get local, and visit the many available locations to eat good food and drink healthy juices. As your local juice shop, we can get your cold-pressed juice made, but you may also pick fresh produce from the market and prepare at home. Whether you decide to make it at home or buy it from any of our juicy

22

pop outs in Miami, you have to try it! Juicing helps you heal from all your junk food needs, and shows you that raw foods can be turned into something other than a nutrient-empty dish. Life will squeeze our energy but mother nature will keep us alive, radiant and strong through simple habits, like juicing. In a bottle of a GreenG Lifestyle Juice, you can find green foods that alkalinize and detoxify the body, white foods that boost your immune system, red foods that clean your blood and make your hearts strong, yellow foods that keep you beautiful, orange foods that help prevent cancer and purple ones that gives longevity. So why not juice and eat all colorful foods nature has given us, specially if they can be tasty.

If you decide you want to juice, start with a morning daily juice routine. Drink it within the first 15 minutes after you wake up, your body will digest it better on an empty stomach and do it for at least 4 times a week to help you increase your energy! You can also snack a juice 8oz to 12oz; replace a meal with 24oz-36oz of juice; juice to help you ease your visits to the bathroom or cleanse with 6-8 juices for 3-5days. Another useful tip, try to add more veggies than fruits or pick only one fruit instead of two.

Be aware that small changes make big impacts. Starting by visiting local healthy places can help you with these small changes and to show you a new kind of living we have created a space just for you to fall in love with - the New Miami Lifestyle. Come visit us at the bench, not only will you love our drinks, snacks and place, but when you experience the [vida a la green], you’ll never go back to any other lifestyle. Did You Know That Your Thoughts Could Create Illness In Your Body? Estela Ortiz

T

he Amygdala is a small part of the brain, it is the center of emotions and motivation. When the Amygdala recognizes any type of threat, it sends a signal to the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland to release hormones (CRH corticotropin, adrenocorticotropin ACTH) to the adrenal gland which will produce Cortisol. Also the Amygdala sends chemical substances called neurotransmitters to the adrenal glands that liberate Adrenaline and Epinephrine into the blood stream in response to the danger alert. The hypothalamus links the nervous system to the endocrine system through the pituitary gland. When these chemicals linger in the body as a result of undergoing long periods of stress and negative thinking, the body will feel a great impact in both systems. For instance, high levels of cortisol create Adrenal Fatigue. This is the way our mind processes negative thinking, emotional and physical stress. Elevated cortisol and epinephrine is known of leading to a wide variety of symptoms known to suppress the immune system, increase the blood pressure, contribute to weight loss or obesity, unbalance blood sugar, decrease libido, and produce acne. Moreover, these chemicals can contribute to anxiety, palpitations and lethargy. Our moods as well as our physical and mental performance are also affected. Negative thoughts program our brain to focus on negative emotions (fear, anger, stress) narrowing our mind and limiting creativity to solve situations. This negative emotion stimulates the brain to release chemicals that reinforce discomfort. 26

On the other hand positive thoughts make you experience positive emotions (joy, enthusiasm, desire) and generate Dopamine, Serotonin, Endorphins and Oxytocin. This neurochemicals are responsible for opening your sense of well being, expanding your mind to give way to imagination. Happiness promotes actions that take you closer to your goals. This motivation will last for years. Negative thoughts are just a quick response to the impending danger. Positive people have a better ability to analyze and think. They are more creative, alert, and aware of their surroundings. Positive thinking improves physical activity, self confidence, relationships, communication skills and life-work balance.

TAKE ACTION IN ORDER TO THINK AND LIVE BETTER. FIND A PROFESSIONAL LIFE COACH A trained life coach assists people to be positive with their goals and obtain fulfilling results in their personal/professional lives. Coaches are trained to listen, observe and support. He/she will encourage the client to enhance the skills, resources and creativity that the client already has, allowing the client to self discover and self-improve. A coach will help the client focus on the present and the future not the past. Coaches are motivational and inspiring. They use a variety of tools and brainstorming techniques that help clients to sick seekmore desirable future.

Meditation offers a mindful state of deep peace and a positive outlook on life. The key is not to get hooked into thoughts, but just to be aware of them. We don’t have to be slaves of our thoughts. This tranquil state of mind helps to think more clearly, accept things that we cannot and change. It teaches us to be less emotional and reactionary. Meditation reduces the pain and helps accept what is, at this present moment. There are various techniques, such as counting breaths, contemplation or change racing thoughts to a quieter mind. START PHYSICAL ACTIVITY According with the Mayo Clinic, when we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins. This endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. They also trigger a positive feeling in the body similar to that of morphine. For example, when a runner experiences a “Runners High” he/she will describe the feeling as a euphoric. Endorphins act as analgesics and sedatives diminishing pain. In other words, exercise improves your health condition. It helps to increase your self-esteem, controls weight, improves mood, boosts energy, contributes to have better sleep, enhances arousal for women and men, and it’s also fun. By nature, we all resist to change. Coaching boosts change and development. A good coach will guide you to be mindful of your non-verbal communication. He/ she will give you assistance to practice effective conflict resolution using Emotional Intelligence technics. PRACTICE MEDITATION

LET ME SHARE WITH YOU THE STORY: [OF ONE OF MY CLIENTS] From a very young age Nick had problems with his weight. Despite this problem, he tried different sports such as track and field, running, football and swimming. He managed to maintain his athleticism for several years of his youth. When reaching adulthood, Nick had to face responsibilities such as work and family just like the Vast ma jority of people. He no longer had the time and motivation to maintain his physical condition and healthy diet, so as a result, he developed diabetes. For long periods of his life, Nick dealt with high levels of emotional stress. This was a contributing factor for his weight gain. Seven months ago, he was subjected to an open-heart surgery. sical therapy in the hospital, Nick’s energy and mobility were tremendously compromised. Even though his condition seemed precarious at the time, he entrusted me with his mind. I was able to see beyond his physical condition. I learned that Nick is a man with a great deal of knowledge in philosophy, psychology, sociology, science, astronomy, quantum physics, politics, music and even sports. He was a water polo referee. Amongst other impressive qualities, he is a free spirit with a brilliant mind and he possesses a great altruistic and generous heart. A conversation with him is a learning experience with a touch of sarcastic humor. When his mind was rid of emotional pain, he decided to entrust me with his body. Today more than ever, even with the severe joint and muscle pain in his body, Nick is convinced that the emotional conflicts arising from his health conditions will not remain in his subconscious mind. This emotional conflicts will no longer affect his health because he acknowledged that inner peace is the right way. He also realized that the use of nervous system stimulants (medicines, coffee, liquor, etc) are counterproductive for his condition. With a specific diet designed for his case, combined with Emotional Intelligence exercises, guided meditation and a physical activity, Nick’s life has improved significantly. Today, Nick is able to walk two to three miles, swim and practice core workout. He has become more conscious of his thoughts, emotions and body. Nick is empowering his life and living the present moment. I have had the pleasure to contribute to this process as his Life Coach, spiritual guide and trainer. I am very proud of his IronSoul who freed himself from disease.

JANUARY HAS

COME AND GONE Rene Viera

...

and that New Years resolution to get in shape is still on the back burner. You promised this would be the year you do it but still nothing. Ok, ok, enough with the guilt trip; it’s not too late to begin the journey of realizing the best version of you and I’m going to help you get it done. My name is Rene Viera. I have been coaching people for more than ten years, from competitive athletes to soccer moms and everyone in between. I’ve seen the trends and the diet fads, and I know what works. Here’s the reality that fitness experts won’t share: everything works. If you go from sitting on the couch after work to taking a zumba class playing ball with your friends or joining a Crossfit gym, it will all help you get in better

shape than you were before. It’s a matter of consistently engaging in some sort of physical activity. The challenge for most of us is just that, consistency, that’s why we need to find things that we honestly like to do. Let’s face it if you don’t enjoy jumping on a treadmill for 45minutes a day, the chances you’ll stick to that are not very high. However there’s a catch. [If you’re goal is to look a certain way the type of activity you engage in has a lot to do with the outcome.] If you’re trying to be strong enough to rip a house off the foundation, then long distance running is probably not your best option. Likewise, if you’re trying to build incredible cardiovascular endurance, lifting heavy weight isn’t going to get you there. My experience is that most of us want neither. We want to be strong but not huge, and we want a tank but aren’t running cross country meets daily. So how do we achieve that “fit” look without spinning our wheels, as they say? Here are a few good tips to build some good hard lean muscle and stay lean. - Once a week go for a long run. This will mean something different for all of us depending on how good we are conditioning. Typically, a long run will be between a mile and a 5K. Obviously, some of us can run a little longer and some are sucking wind after the first quarter mile, so this is a good average.

30

• For Mass Building: 4 to 5 exercises 4-6sets/6-12reps per set at a moderate to heavy load with a 45sec to 1min rest between sets and a 1-2min rest between exercises will be what you want to stick to.

-Two to Three times a week do some sprinting. Sprints are typically between 50-200 meters where 50 is a very short sprint and would require less rest between them such as 30seconds and 200 being a long sprint requiring a little more rest such as 2min or so. 10-15 intervals should be completed. - Four to Five times a week do some weightlifting. This is how we sculpt our muscles so there’s a certain amount of load repetition and rest time associated depending on the desired outcome. • For Strength Building: 2 or 3 exercises 1-10sets/ 1-5reps at a maximal load with 2-4min of rest between sets is the range you want to maintain

• For Muscular Endurance: 3-4 exercises 2-4 sets/15-20 reps. Here you should choose a load where you reach failure between reps 15-20. This is hard to guess right; so just play with it and make adjustments as you go along. As you get better, the weights will eventually feel light and you can use a little more weight. Lastly, I encourage all my clients and athletes to learn and play new sports. It’s not only a fun way to stay active but the social aspect of playing games is also important. The benefit to your body is that all sports require different movement patterns and many use various objects to play the sport. This will keep your body guessing and clear from that dreaded plateau effect, where we stop seeing change this comes from your body’s ability to adapt, routine is the enemy. Follow these quick tips and you’ll be sure to reach those goals and have fun while you’re at it.

The word “Elia” stands for olive and olive tree; symbol of peace, victory, and wisdom. On the Mediterranean coast, olive trees can be found throughout, and thriving with minimum maintenance. They can live for as much as a thousand years. Delicious and nutritious, olives and olive oil have been the core of the Mediterranean diet and cuisine since its birth. The concept behind Elia Gourmet is simple; fresh, wholesome ingredients minimally processed to develop healthy, delicious dishes. When owner Dimitris Harvalis was growing up, he was exposed to this style of cooking with his grandmother, and the word “organic” really had no meaning, as everything they prepared was organic by nature. Elia Gourmet does not have a fryer, a microwave, or a freezer, and the use of canned or processed foods is out of the question. With a thriving downtown locale, and two others in the works, Elia Gourmet brings the essence of the Mediterranean to Miami. When you are attempting to train your dog to listen to your commands, you must do it every single day – preferably several times each day. It is also essential that you never get mad or yell at your dog, as this will only convey the idea that training is something that is bad. When your dog listens to your command, reward your pup with petting and a training treat, especially in the early days. Later on, your dog will listen to your commands without the rewards of a treat. Always use encouraging words and treat your dog with a gentle hand. Your dog must know that you are committed to training him/her as well as caring for him/ her. Be Happy. Because your dog is your friend and your training partner, keep your voice upbeat and smile at him. Dogs are sensitive to our tone of voice and body language, so use both to let him know that you will be so happy when he does what you ask him. Training sessions should be kept brief. Short 5 to 10-minute sessions are much more effective; after a while, your dog’s attention span will decrease, diminishing an interest in paying attention. Aim for 2 or 3 short training sessions each day. Reinforce good behavior. Always let your dog know when he or she has done something good with positive reinforcement. Offer a bit of praise and a pat on the head or a small training treat. Use training treats strategically. For behavior that your pup already knows, use low value treats like his kibble to reward him. Use higher value treats when you want to encourage him to learn a new command. Also make sure the treat you decide to give goes along with your pet’s diet. Don’t ignore bad behavior. When your dog behaves badly, don’t ignore him. This will only confuse your dog, making him believe that bad behavior is okay; this will ultimately undermine all of the hard work you have put in to help your dog behave properly. Again, never strike or yell at your dog, but do say “no”, “down”, “sit” or whatever command you have taught your dog to stop bad behavior. Correct bad behavior immediately; waiting for 10 minutes is pointless, as your dog will not remember what he did. Keep it simple. Avoid trying to teach your dog 3 or 4 new commands simultaneously, as this will only be confusing. Start with a simple command such as “sit” or “stay”. Once your dog has this mastered, you can move on to another command. Stay consistent in this area as well. For example, use “leave it” each and every time when you want your dog to leave something alone. There should be only one leader. Whether you or someone else in your family is responsible for the training, be consistent. Your dog will see the one who is teaching him how to behave as the leader, and there shouldn’t be multiple leaders. If you are the one who begins the training, you need to continue and not delegate it to other members of the family. Choose an area where there are few distractions to begin your training. It is very difficult to get a dog’s full attention when there are children running around playing or you are at a park where other dogs are nearby. Choose an area that is quiet, where there are few distractions. Once your dog starts responding positively to your commands, you can gradually introduce more distractions without the worry that your dog will ignore your commands. Once a new command/behavior is learned, incorporate it in your daily routine. That way it remains consistent with your pup’s lifestyle.

Training your dog is really not as difficult as it may seem. Patience and consistency are two important essentials to your success at training your pup. Dogs are very smart, and ready to please their owner. Keep these tips in mind and training your dog to listen to your commands will be a piece of cake.

Tips to train your pup to stop barking: •

Remove the motivation: Find out what is causing him to bark or encouraging him to bark and see how you can remove it from your pups surroundings.

Ignore the barking do not give him any attention while he is barking. When he stops and remains quite then you can reinforce the good behavior.

Teach your dog the “quiet” command.

Ask your dog to preform and incompatible behavior when he barks. For example when he starts barking command him to go lay down in his bed.

Make sure your dog is getting a sufficient amount of physical and mental exercise daily. Sometimes a dog will bark out of boredom or frustration or when they are not receiving enough attention.

Surely The Radio Is Boring You By Now Chelsey Sellars

s

ame pop beat and silly love lyrics playing over and over. But lucky for us, Wynwood isn’t too far, and you can catch a show by the eclectic band called Tamboka. The name Tamboka comes from the Spanish word for drum, Tambor, and the Spanish word for mouth, boca, meaning the beat is mainly from the drums and they speak from the heart. It started in June 2011, when Tyrone Iregui and friends met at Miami Dade Collage. They started to make music together and played on the streets of Wynwood, which 36

brought their additional members gravitate towards them. Tamboka consists of 8 members from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, and even Poland. Tamboka’s gypsy latin sound is created by the use of violins, guitars, accordions, the cuatro, the ca jon, congas, bongos, bass guitar, trumpet, vocals, and a rapper. “Music put me in a better place in life,” said Iregui, the starter of Tamboka, while Roze comments “I was never good at anything else and I was always determined to play classical violin. It brought me joy and friends,” said Roze.

With so many group members, day jobs and other obligations in life, it is challenging for the band to come together to practice, but it is certainly not impossible. Tamboka is dedicated and usually hosts shows that last an hour to three hours. The band has played in South Beach and Brickell, but their favorite place is Wynwood. Apart from the art culture that Wynwood invites them with, Tamboka member Roze said the RHouse is their home. They were also featured in the Grassroots Festival where they got to perform for over 500 fans.

“We do this for ourselves. The love from the crowd and the feedback is a plus,” said Roze. To create a track, usually one member comes up with a piece and the others hop on it with other sounds and lyrics. It’s like each member comes with their own piece of thread to later weave together with the rest of the group. Tamboka has a bright future ahead of them. They plan to travel and continue to share their talent with others. Their next album is set to drop in March and they will play at another Grassroots Festival in North Carolina.

For those that seek a future with music, or want to start a band, Roze and Iregui share this bit of advice: “Don’t hold back. Transform on stage. Find something that inspires you. Experiment with sound and stay dedicated.”

ATTENTION 38TH STREETS AND BISCAYNE DRIVERS

H

ow many times have you been late because of this intersection? The traffic conditions in that area are currently the nightmare of all drivers. It will become worse. All four corners of 38th street and Biscayne Blvd. intersection will have new construction, adding a huge population to the area soon. What’s coming is a high rise on the NE corner and retail, plus up to three stories of parking on the SE corner (where Art by God used to be).

Can you imagine the traffic when all new condominiums in the area south of 36th Street are occupied and the four corners of 38th Street are developed? Biscayne Neighborhoods Association (BNA) and other active community leaders in that area have already expressed their concern to the developers. BNA has been in numerous meetings with them. The City Commissioners will have to consider these points when they discuss the approval of the projects.

The corners on the west side of Biscayne Blvd. will have their own projects soon.

We don’t want quick approvals anymore, we want long-term solutions.

Florida Department of Transportation doesn’t have a long-term traffic study, just an immediate view of traffic conditions that an independent engineering company is conducting. The study is inappropriate to contemplate the solutions of an increase in traffic even in the medium term.

ULTRA

MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016

Chelsey Sellars

Y

ou dress up, or down, in your best rave outfit. Shades on, party beads and trucker hats. Whether you take an Uber or bravely drive your car, you show up to the scene ready for what’s to come. As you step on to the field, the adrenaline pumps and your mind is in belief. Run to stage, the base is going; lights are flashing in all directions and colors. Then it hits you: it’s time, you’re here…it’s Ultra. Since the time of Woodstock, music festivals have universally been loved and enjoyed. They are a common ground for music lovers to come and unite with other fans. Some come to music festivals just for the atmosphere; to be around the happiness and relish in the rush. Fans soak in the vibrations of each set, recording the action with GoPros and cell phones. Few get to go behind the stage and view the intense crowd from the perspective of the DJ. Ultra Music Festival started in 1999 as a one day, outdoor electronic dance music festival In Miami. People travel from far and wide to attend it. And now that the world has come to Miami for the thrill, Ultra is extending across the American borders. Today, Ultra is is held across the globe from in places such as Argentina, South Africa, and Thailand. This epic music concert has had appearances from deadmau5 and Calvin Harris, staples in the electronic music scene. However, there have been appearances from artists of other genres such as Black

Eyed Peas and Justin Bieber. Not everyone is an Ultra fan. According to Miami New Times, a security guard working the event last year was trampled by a group of stampeding party crashes in 2014. She suffered two fractures in her skull and passed out during the incident. Her injuries on top of countless of arrests and cases drug overdoses, the city wants this event terminated. Fear not EDM lovers, they were not going to take away your party that easy. Ultra event organizers and Miami Police have created rules and regulations to make Ultra a more safe festival without losing its fun. Here are some of Ultra’s prohibited items to keep in mind before turning up this March, as provided by ultramusicfestival.com

-No illegal or illicit substances, drugs, or drug paraphernalia -No weapons of any kind including, but not limited to, pocket knives or self defense sprays -No flammable items or liquids including aerosols and fireworks -No markers, pens or spray paint -No backpacks, purses, or bags allowed except bags made of clear plastic, clear vinyl, or clear PVC not exceeding 13”x17” -No stuffed animals -No facial masks -No outside food or beverage, including alcohol -No bottles, cans, canteens, flasks, or coolers -No opened over the counter medication or eye drops -No opened packs of cigarettes or tampons -No pacifiers, glow sticks -No balloons, balls, inflatable balls, frisbees or flying disks -No umbrellas, chairs, blankets, sleeping bags or tents -No bicycles, skateboards, scooters, or personal motorized vehicles -No animals except for service animals assisting an individual with a disability -No large chains, chained wallets or spiked jewelry -No laser pens, laser pointers, or similar focused light devices -No water guns, squirt guns, spray bottles or misters -No musical instruments, noise makers or air horns -No whistles -No professional cameras, flash cameras or video and audio recording equipment, or camera pole -No poles, sticks, or “totems”
