Experience

I have always been interested in computers and anything electronic. Always taking something apart to fix something else. This does come with its benefits as it aids me in the technical understanding of how electronics fit into products. This in turn helps me to understand the manufacture of a product from start to finish and constantly aids me in problem solving and designing. I also enjoy going to the gym in my spare time. This is important to me as it relieves stress and keeps me fit. Keeping my brain fresh and active so that I can focus on becoming a better designer.

SALON PROJECT

Salon Project

The Salon Project is part of a think tank group that are attempting to design more responsibly. The aim of the 3 months experience with Senior designer and Founder of ASA Design Adrian Stokes was to create a set of kitchen appliances used everyday that are responsibly designed, long lasting and efficient in both cost and use.

PRESENTING THE IN.FORM RANGE... 14 Salon Project

The kettle is the cornerstone of every home. Therefore it should be cherished and pleasing to use every single time. With the contrast of simple ceramics and traditional oak, the kettle is semantic to the kitchen environment. The toaster’s design has been deeply considered so that it’s right there when you need it and blends in when you don’t.

Specifically designed to be easy to use and long lasting, using no mechanical parts, the kettle can be heated one of several ways. Either through the induction system built into the kettle itself when connected to the kettle base or via more traditional means on a gas or electric stove, for those moments when the induction base may be unavailable.

16 Salon Project

Salon Project 17

The flask allows you to drink on the go. Using the visual indicator as a ‘full’ line to show yours signify a days worth of coffee. The flask can be boiled both on and off the inductive hob by attaching the lid to the bottom of the flask. Both the flask and the kettle have had all electronic and mechanical components such as springs removed. To reduce the amount of material wastage and increase the product life.

18 Salon Project

No kitchen is complete without a toaster. This toaster is designed with repair-ability in mind. It easy slides open to reveal components that can be interchanged to fit new and repaired parts. As with all of our products the materials selected with this were for a key purpose. White ceramic to shield the user from heat. Aluminium for the body as it is widely recycled. With a bamboo handle that is strong but sturdy.

DESIGN BY CRAFT Designing through sketching is an age old tradition. However, to truly understand the physical form crafting is an essential tool. The crafting process helps to explore contours and texture, to create objects of true beauty. In an attempt to ever improve my skill-set, I frequent workshops when possible to get hands on with materials.

Design by Craft 25

N O N LITERAL FORM A product designed and sculpted to entice interaction through aesthetics and form

Sketching is key to a designer’s tool-set. Using sketching to explore eye-catching shapes and forms allows me to visualise the model before I create in a 3 dimensional space.

Interpretation of this 25 year old brief varies widely from person to person. However, I approached the brief with a minimalist mindset. Remembering that the form had to contain electronics, I used different density foams to signal different materials creating an appeal to the eye though colour, texture, split lines and form.

IS YOUR MEDICINE SAFE?

RSA DESIGN AWARDS

RSA Competition 31

Dawa Pack is an entry for the RSA Design Awards of 2015. The brief chosen was Africa Pack: Improve the way medicines are protected, dispensed, distributed and/or taken in Sub- Saharan Africa.

After some carefully considered research I chose to point my project towards anti counterfeit packaging measures. Helping Sub Saharan Africa in its struggle against the counterfeit medicine. However, These boards as of current are still a work in progress and have been completed before the competition itself opens for entries.

RSA Competition 35

The general concept behind DAWA Pack is to educate the customer base throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, whilst at the same time offering a valuable, trusted answer to SSA’s ongoing war with counterfeit medicine.

Utilizing thermochromic printing the DAWA packaging will educate patients on the legitimacy of the medicine by changing colour on contact. This printing process will create semantic packaging that is recognised in Africa, whilst moving forward in the ďŹ ght against counterfeit medicine.

DAB RADIO SELF SET BRIEF

DAB Radio 43

I set myself the brief of sketching and developing a DAB radio. A simple task for some, but this task was mainly challenging my ability to sketch and generate page after page of ideas in a short period of time. I gave myself 2 weeks to generate my ideas, long enough to juggle other university work, but short enough to test my abilities. In this time I found that I developed my sketching and illustration.

RSA Competition 45

Short, fast sketching and quick idea generation and exploration help me to find a basic idea and understandings

Clearer drawings help to indicate strong forms and styles that are appropriate to the brief.

NHS PROJECT

NHS Project 55

The NHS Live Project opened my eyes to the thinking behind user experience design. Mainly taking insights from live interviews with patients of the chemotherapy ward, to drive the core values of the design team. Utilising the experience to create a safe and pleasant environment, for the patients comfort. The concept is to create Mobile chemotherapy unit that would journey through Yorkshire’s narrow roads. Using extendible trailers to create temporary Chemotherapy units that offer accessible treatment to the remote residents of Yorkshire.

56 NHS Project

The one on one experience is vital to patient comfort. Space will be allocated to maintain the coveted one on one experience.

Patients don’t want to feel like they are on public display, this is their battle.

Using one way glass could hide the patients but also allow them to feel in situ.

The mobile unit will need to be powered to support vital systems.

A generator can be embedded into the design to bring the unit to life.

Privacy is a KEY policy for the unit, patients should feel in control. Screens may be an option for patients and all documents will be confidential.

NHS Project 57

Yorkshire has long windy thin roads, travelling can be a pain for patients. The unit could be a temporary setup that contracts and expands.

Sitting in a dark or poorly lit room for hours will negatively effect patients comfort.

Using windows to increase natural light will create an airy, open space.

The unit must be available to all patients especially with disabled access.

The unit must cater for those with a disability. Ramps and toilets will be designed accordingly.

The hospital often utilises materials that don’t enhance the patients experience. Designing the unit allows us to handpick the materials to create a relaxing atmosphere.

58 NHS Project

NHS Project 59

After much deliberation amongst the team with input from the clients at both NHS York and York Against Cancer, we chose to create a simple design for the external part of the unit without branding it with negative stigma.

60 NHS Project

A shot of the product in context shows that it can be positioned at convenient locations. In the shot the trailer has been posted outside a Sainsbury’s, This will be both inconspicuous and highly convenient. Patients will be able to go into Sainsbury’s do their shopping and then come in for chemotherapy.

Treatment Area

The layout of the truck has been designed with the patients needs in mind at all times, building on key insights. The Reception and Waiting Area are completely separated off from the Treatment Area, to help patients and nurses to create a comfortable, secure space. The Treatment Area is fitted with one way glass that can only be seen through from the inside giving patients security as they don’t want to feel like they are on display. The Office that will check in and out patients is segregated and positioned inside the Treatment Area so that only patients can be seen entering and leaving. Also the Bathroom at the back has no stairs or bumps in order to access as it will need to be accessed by patients that are on chemotherapy drips. The trailer will utilise nearby power outlets, which will in turn refrigerate the chemotherapy drugs stored in the Staff Room.

AFTER HOURS...

The trailer will become a mobile cinema where family and friends of the patient can get together creating a small community to aid patients in their comfort and life during chemotherapy. This will also aid the security of the trailer as there will be members of the public inside the trailer after office hours deterring criminal activity.
