Heritage Round - Reunion Day 2022

Welcome to the 2022 annual Heritage Day It has been a while since we have a “normal” Heritage Day given covid restrictions for the past couple of years, so we are all looking forward to the day with a great sense of excitement and anticipation. Heritage Day at St Edmund’s is a unique blend of many aspects which form the heart of the College. It is a celebration of our old boys and the sense of tradition they bring to the school. It is a celebration of the school’s heritage, looking back on our past achievements and our journey forward. It is a celebration of sport, sporting talent, sportsmanship and healthy rivalry. Above all, it is a celebration of the depth and richness of the Eddies community. The life and energy of the College comes from its community, and Heritage Day allows all members of our community to come together and celebrate everything that is St Edmund’s. I sincerely hope you enjoy this year’s Heritage Day and everything it brings, whether you are an old boy catching up with some mates, a current student cheering on your mates in their rugby games, family members or members of our wider community. Thank you for your attendance, engagement and support. Edmund’s to the fore. Joe Zavone Principal

Heritage Round - and SEC – A War Memorial College On August 8, 1918, the British Army launched an attack by four corps across a front of 16 kilometres, to the east of the important rail junction at Amiens in France. In the midst of all of this weaponry, noise and movement, this platoon of B Company, 29th Australian Infantry Battalion, operated as part of the second wave of the advance This iconic photograph contains a wide diversity of experience. These men included labourers, leather workers, schoolteachers, clerks, packers and farmers. They were young and old, married and single, sober and inebriate. Three had been formally punished for bad behaviour, most had clean conduct sheets. They had been wounded in the legs, backs, buttocks and faces. They had lost brothers and friends. At least three would raise sons who served in the next world war. Most of these men, a minuscule but representative group of individuals in the midst of an immense, global war, would come home, find wives, marry and settle down. The photograph of these men, a single moment in time caught in the midst of warfare on an epic scale, perhaps captures the realities of Australia’s experience more than any other. Today our College has this image on their 1XV jumper to celebrate Heritage Round. The jumper also has the Remembrance Day Poppy and the year that the College was opened in 1954 on the sleeve. Thanks to the sponsor of the jumpers Mr Gerard Tiffen (SEC ’91) for his generous contribution and this year’s charity recipients Karinya House which St Edmund’s has a long standing history with.

Eddies Helping House and Home The social justice focus for this term is to support and raise money for local organisations. The two organisations we are supporting are Karinya House and Home in Queanbeyan. St Edmund’s College has built a strong relationship and connection to these two organisations for close to 25 years. Karinya House for Mothers and Babies provides supported accommodation, transitional housing and outreach services to pregnant and parenting women and their families who are in crisis. Home in Queanbeyan, provides long-term supported accommodation for 20 adults with chronic mental illness who are homeless or cannot live independently. The money we raise will goes towards purchasing household furniture for the mothers and babies Karinya House supports, so the places of accommodation for these mums and babies can feel more like a home rather than just a place to stay. HOME in Queanbeyan has requested the money goes towards purchasing healthy food for the resident’s pantry.

There are three fundraising events for the boys to participate in, to help reach the target of $5,000 or more. Heritage Day 30 July - bucket appeal The first of these events will take place on Saturday July 29th, House and Home are the chosen charities for this year’s heritage round. The College leaders will be collecting donations throughout the day. Mufti Day 16 Sept The fundraising efforts will conclude, on September 16th with a gold coin or note donation mufti day. Sleepout 16 Sept- 7pm in gym until 7am 17 Sept Students Yr 4-12 are being invited to take part in the annual “Eddies sleeps out for House and Home”, boys are asked to sleep for a night in College Gymnasium to gain a very small insight into what it is like to sleep rough. On the night the boys will participate in awareness raising activities of homelessness.
