Healing hospitality Repeated headlines about violence can make us “feel like locking our doors and never entering society again,” writes pastor and author Max Lucado. After another mass shooting, he penned an online opinion piece that urged people to do the exact opposite by opening their doors, their hearts and their circles.

“It’s no accident that hospitality and hospital come from the same Latin word,” Lucado writes, “for they both lead to the same result: healing. When you open your door to someone, you are sending this message: ‘You matter.’”

Because daily life is filled with rejections, extending an invitation — even to a simple meal — can be life -altering, Lucado contends. What you think is a messy house might be a sanctuary to someone else, “and to those who eat alone every night, pork and beans on paper plates tastes like filet mignon.” Our kitchen tables are “God’s secret weapons in the war on fear,” Lucado says. “We never know what one meal will do.

Friendship Destroyed by the Blight of Gossip Holy Ones of God’s family, Grace to You! It is painful when friendship is broken by the act of gossip. The Bible says: “Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this , not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way” (Romans 14:13 NKJV).

If you are sons and daughters of God, you are family; and may I say that nothing blights the beauty of a friendship more quickly than gossip. When a friend gossips to you about another person, there is always the lingering suspicion that he or she will do the same about you.

Friendship is based on mutual acceptance. We entrust ourselves to friends who we know will keep our confidences. A budding friendship is often withered when a person draws us into destructive analysis of someone else. We begin to feel uneasy, guarded, and defensive.

Our concern is to say or do nothing which could be used against us. The friendship is soon strained and reserved. The Spanish proverb is right: “Whoever gossips to you will gossip of you.”

A cure for gossip is to never say anything about another we have not said to that person or are willing to say within 24 hours. Often we need a friend with whom to share our feelings about another person, but that can never be a substitute for honest and loving confrontation with the person.

A helpful friend is one who can listen, enable us to clarify our feelings and then press us to discern what we can do to be creative instead of critical. “To speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves,” says Will Durant. So say I! I encourage you to avoid gossip lest you come to be regarded as its originator. Insinuations are rhetoric of the devil. Gain new friends, but do not trash your old friends. Amen!

veryone knows that Mother’s Day is celebrated every year on the Second Sunday in May, which started in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson designated it as the official day to celebrate all mothers. But did you known that it was Anna Jarvis who campaigned and rallied for

an official holiday to honor all mothers? Although she was never a mother herself, she proclaimed herself to be the official Mother of Mother’s Day. Everything she wrote or signed was signed, “The Mother of Mother’s Day.”

Second, did you know that Mother’s Day started as an anti-war movement by Julia Ward Howe? Howe is better known for writing the “Battle Hymn of Republic,” but she wanted to promote global peace by organizing Mother’s Day rallies after the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War, because too many mothers had lost their sons to senseless wars.

Did you know that a former football coach by the name of Frank Hering also campaigned for a Mother’s Day and was accused of trying to “kidnap” Mother’s Day? Jarvis did not like the idea of Mother’s Day having a “father” so she blasted him in a statement titled, “Kidnapping Mother’s Day: Will You Be an Accomplice?” Hering lost the fight.

Woodrow Wilson was not the only President to put a stamp on Mother’s Day. President Franklin D. Roosevelt also put his stamp on Mother’s Day. He designed a 1934 postage stamp to commemorate the day. However, Jarvis did not approve the design and refused to allow the words “Mother’s Day” to appear on it. FDR surrounded the design and settled for words that read: “In Memory and in Honor of the Mothers of America.”

Jarvis did not want Mother’s Day to become a commercialized celebration. All she wanted was to have children honor their mothers for the love given to them. She lost everything in her fight to protect her holiday. Mother’s Day is second to Christmas in spending on gifts. In 2017, it was estimated that consumers spent $23 billion in gifts and $36 billion in 2018 on gifts for mothers (National Geographic, 2018). What can we say, but we love our Mothers. Happy Mother’s Day!

his month is truly a time to celebrate because Bishop William LaRue Dillard is celebrating his 45th Anniversary as Bishop over SBC, and his retirement too! The Bible says, in Jeremiah 3:15, “I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.” You can put Bishop Dillard’s picture right there!

This is such a monumental event; a time of glorifying God for allowing this man of the cloth who watched over the souls of Second Baptist’s parishioners for 45 years, and for that we say, thank you Lord!

I pray that Bishop Dillard will now move forward, in his sandals and short pants and relax, play, and do whatever will bring him joy and happiness; at least for a few days.

The month of May must be an excellent month to retire, because I have heard of many people retiring this month, myself included. What I know about this season of life is; if the Lord has blessed you to see it, it is a time to help/give back to the younger generation. Extend some words of wisdom, especially to those who have time to listen.

I beg of you, young and old, “To study to show thyself approve unto God; a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15 NKJV). This does not mean you can’t have fun and enjoy some of the pleasures this world has to offer, but when you study, this will help to direct your decisions when it comes to having fun.

So enjoy this season of your life; remember to tell someone about Jesus and A BIG WELCOME to Pastor Chris, Lady Heather, Savannah and Chris Jr. I know that you have been at SBC for a while, and I look forward to meeting you soon!

may have passed you by without much fanfare, but Patient Safety Week was celebrated this year, during the week of March 11th16th. Patient Safety is something we all need to consider anytime we visit a healthcare facility, because some of us are patients with chronic medical conditions; some of us have temporary acute medical conditions, some of us seek medical attention for preventive

measures, and many of us are caregivers for others with debilitating medical conditions.

No matter where you fall along the healthcare spectrum, there are things you should do to keep yourself and your love ones healthy and free from preventable harms. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the chances of being harmed while seeking healthcare is “1 in 300” as opposed to the risk of being hurt from air travel is “1 in one million.”

Infections, including hospital-associated infections (HAI’s), medication errors, delayed diagnosis, over exposure to radiation, and complications from surgery are all sources of possible preventable harms in medicine. See what you can do to prevent this from affecting you or your love ones.

1. The CDC estimates that 1 out of 31 hospitalized patients will contract at least one healthcare-associated infection (HAI). The WHO states that in high-income countries 7 out of 100 hospitalized patients will suffer a HAI. HAI’s affects millions of patients each year, from which more than 30,000 patients will die as a direct

result of these infections. One simple thing that can be done to make sure all members of your healthcare team practice hand hygiene. Don’t feel embarrassed to ask a provider to wash his or her hands if they have not done so prior to your exposure. Hand hygiene should be practiced in all healthcare settings whether it is a hospital, clinic, or skilled nursing facility. Hand hygiene should be practiced even after touching bedrails, computers, or any contaminated surface.

Hand hygiene and contact precautions should be utilized prior to any aseptic procedures such as the insertion, inspection or removal

of urinary catheters, IV lines or central lines. It is estimated that practicing hand hygiene can reduce hospital-acquired infections by as much as 50%.

2. Medication errors are another area where patients can help to reduce preventable harms. The global cost of medication errors is estimated at $42 billion dollars. This does not include the cost of associated healthcare expenses from these errors and the loss of income and productivity. Errors can occur during the prescribing, transcribing, dispensing and administration of medication. As a patient, make sure that the provider reconciles all of your medications. If you go to an urgent care, if you are admitted or discharged from the hospital, anytime medications are prescribed, check that your provider knows all of your medications, including over-thecounter (OTC) medications and herbals/vitamins. Check for any drug or food allergies, and allergies to seafood and nuts are documented in your medical record. Electronic medical records have helped to reduce illegible hand-written prescriptions, but still there are inherit risks. Know the name and the dose of the medication(s) being prescribed. Be aware that there are high-alert medications which can cause significant harm along with sound-alike medications. If you are taking blood-thinners e.g. Coumadin (warfarin) or other anti-coagulants, it is important to follow your physician/provider’s plan of care. Do not take over-the counter medications, vitamins or herbals without the provider’s advice as these items can potentially cause increased risk for bleeding, or reduce the effectiveness of the blood thinner. Lastly, when hospitalized, minimize interruptions with nursing staff when they are administering medications and make sure they practice the “Five Rights of Medication Safety” which includes: the administration of the Right Medication, in the Right Dose, at the Right Time, by the Right Route (oral

vs injection vs IV vs topical…) and to the Right Patient.

3. Delayed diagnosis and inaccurate diagnoses contributes to significant cases of morbidity and mortality (illness and death) throughout the world. Having access to good quality healthcare is extremely important and can mean the difference between life and death. According to the World Health Organization, at least 5% of adults suffer a diagnostic error in outpatient settings, while 6-17% suffers adverse events in hospital settings. Diagnostic errors account for nearly 10% of patient deaths in the United States. Follow-up with your provider in a timely manner when you complete tests such as blood-work, x-rays, and MRI’s. This is instrumental to formulating your diagnosis and healthcare management. Give your provider the full picture of your illness; do not leave out pertinent information because of embarrassment as it may be that vital key to arriving at an accurate diagnosis. Once you have a diagnosis, don’t be afraid to ask questions such as the potential outcome or prognosis; what can expected in the healing process or possible complications, and the things that you can do or need to do in the process. Be an active, engaged participant with your healthcare team; remember you are the reason they are there.

4. Over-exposure to radiation is another area of preventable harm for patients. Not every injury requires a knee-jerk reaction for an x-ray or CT scan. Studies have shown that unnecessary exposure to radiation increases one’s lifetime risk for de-

veloping cancer. Yes, there are definite indications for ionizing radiation, but talk with your provider to see if an ultrasound or MRI would be an appropriate alternative. The use of radiation has overall improved healthcare and leads to more accurate diagnoses, but should be utilized only when indicated.

5. According to the WHO, approximately 7 million people suffer disabling complications from surgery. Approximately 1 million people will die from complications of surgery. When it has been determined that surgery is needed, do every-

thing possible to ensure that an experienced surgeon will be performing the surgery at a reputable hospital or surgical center. Do not settle for low cost as the deciding factor when having an elective surgical procedure. Ask the surgeon who will be performing the surgery for a consultation to be advised of any alternatives to surgery, the risk vs the benefits, possible complications, and how emergencies will be handled. Other than emergency surgery, do not rush into surgery without completing your pre-op clear-

ance as requested, especially if you need clearance by a specialist, such as a cardiologist. Ask your surgical team if they follow the Universal Protocol or Time-Out to ensure surgery on the wrong-person, wrong-site, and wrong-procedure/ surgery is prevented. Each facility has different times to this protocol. Some perform it while you are awake just prior to surgery, and some will perform it in the OR while sedated.
