Pillowcase Project Past Events Â

On Saturday, March 21 , members of SECTA Key Club attended the teaching of the Pillowcase Project presented by the Red Cross Organization. Not only did members get a little teaching of how the Red Cross originally got started, but members also went in order to learn how to present a very important project. For those that do not know, the Pillowcase Project is an extremely important educational presentation in which the Red Cross educates younger children on the importance of safety preparation in the case of a disaster. Despite popular belief, the most frequent type of disaster are house fires. A lot of members who attended the presentation even realized that they themselves are unprepared in case of such an emergence. While attending this seminar, members learned key details that we are supposed to include while presenting this project. After the seminar, members had the privilege to go up to the front and go through a test run of the actual presentation. After each group went up, they received tips on how to condense certain topics or were encouraged to expand on key points. Overall, it was an interesting experience to go through, and I am so very excited to sign up and present this Project to children later on.

KIWANIS ONE DAY Written by: Megan Saltzman Â

On Saturday April 11th, members went to Kiwanis One Day to help clean books. These books were donated from libraries and other places. The books were for children that did not have any books at home. When the books were given to the children, they were allowed some new books and some old books. The kids were able to choose from the ones that were just given. After the first day that the kids were given books, the weekend after they were able to get another book or two to read. As for the following weeks afterwards, they will be distributed more books as well. Food and drinks were provided for those who helped. Members had a lot of fun looking at all the books and we even read some old favorites to each other. Our club cleaned four boxes of books. Thousands of books were cleaned and ready for both kids and adults to enjoy.

nd SECTA’S 2 Annual

ILLUMINATE THE NIGHT Running for Colors of Lupus

On Friday, April 24th, SECTA Key Club held it’s second annual Illuminate the Night for the Colors of Lupus Foundation. It was held on campus from 6pm8pm and was a 5k run.

In order to prepare for this 5k run, members had to put in a lot of time. One of the main ways we got the word out was through the various posters that members put the time into making. During lunch, members went around hanging these posters in various areas around the school. The best part was seeing how many people stopped to look at these posters after they were hung up. Along with having posters hung up, members sold tickets through word of mouth and caught the interest of their friends and family. Prior to the run, members also filled up the various goodie bags that we would be distributing to the runners. Items in these good bags included: water, a snack, and glow sticks that would be used to “light the night” on the day of the run. Since this was our 2nd year doing this run, we were better prepared and had additional time planning compared to last year.

Written by: Danika Manguiat On Friday, April 24th, SECTA held its second annual Illuminate the Night in order to raise money for the Colors of Lupus. In order to prepare for the day, members arrived at 4pm while others stayed directly after school to ensure that all preparations were complete. Working alongside our Key Club were students from Mrs. Forrester’s government class, NHS, and even Sofia, our very own LTG! Upon arrival, members were assigned different tasks such as preparing the food stand, setting up water stations along the track, and hanging up posters and balloons that would direct the runners on where to go. After I prepared the coolers, I was directed to the mile marker, where I stayed until the event started. Once the runners began, they quickly passed by our station; so quickly that the other two people I was with were unable to properly stamp the runners! Members of the track team quickly lapped the participants who were walking so I constantly had to switch between both mile-marking signs. Since I wasn’t the person stamping the runners, I was assigned the task of directing the runners, so by the time the run ended my throat was very sore. However, after cleaning up our station, the other two volunteers and I were allowed to eat. After eating and enjoying the festivities, members were quick to clean up our mess, emptying the coolers and fixing up Forrester’s room. Overall we made over $1,000 including ticket sales and the event was a huge success!
