Play 9 or 18 hol the Choi

Situated in the hills above the Beautiful North Wales Coast Line, Silver Birch Golf Club or Betws Yn Rhos Golf Club offers a picturesque 18 hole golf course created by owners Bryn and Menna Jones, who established Silver Birch, a friendly Golf Club that welcomes visiting golfers of all abilities. Designed by Stewart Finney and officially opened in 1995, Silver Birch filled a definite gap in the region for a 'Pay & Play' Golf Club where players of all abilities could play golf to their hearts content, without feeling intimidated by their lack of knowledge or the rules, or etiquette.

In 2002 Menna and Bryn created the back-9 holes and whilst also being designed by Stewart Finney, this 9-hole course is very different to the original 9-holes; with the front-9 located on open pasture land and the back-9 having 6000 trees planted throughout all 9 greens, thereby defining the fairways and making it a more challenging course. The result is a unique 18hole course that players of all abilities will enjoy. At 3235 yds Par-59, Silver Birch is excellent for improving your short game, as well as being ideal for the more mature Golfer who finds the full length championship courses too long for them.

LINKS & INLAND LINKS GOLF COURSES: Linksland golf courses are typically characterised by dunes, an undulating surface and sandy soil unsuitable for arable farming but which supports the various indigenous browntop bents and red fescue grasses. The firm turf of links golf courses encourages players to adopt a 'running game'. The term, 'links' is commonly associated with coastal golf courses, often amid dunes with very few water hazards and trees. A links course requires a considerably different style of play than on other type of golf course; the nature of course features uneven fairways, large undulating greens, thick rough and small, deep 'pot' bunkers, whilst the lack of trees leaves the golf course open to the elements and many links golf courses experience extremely windy playing conditions. The ability to play low accurate shots is a must, enabling the player to cope with opposite wind patterns in each half of their round. Whilst an outward nine may require short irons, players may need to hit longer shots to cover the same distance during the inward loop of nine. Link greens are not often protected by front bunkers, encouraging players to play low, running shots into the large greens for the best results. Links golf course are most common in Great Britain and Ireland, especially in Scotland. The Open Championship is always played on links courses – the main feature which differentiates from the other three Major tournaments held in the United States. On the other hand, some courses located hundreds of miles from a coast can have all of the characteristics of a seaside links except for proximity to water; these are known as inland links golf courses.

HEATHLAND COURSES : Heathland golf courses are interior courses that are well manicured but lean more toward grass-and-shrub than tree-lined. The courses which are commonly associated with England feature gentle, rolling fairways; a prominent feature of some of the oldest golf courses in the UK, including past Ryder Cup venues.

PARKLAND COURSES:

The term 'parkland' describes a golf course categorised by its design and natural setting. In the early days of golf, all courses were links orientated , open to wind , sandy and treeless. However, when golf moved inland away from coastal areas, golf courses tended to be much more pastoral in setting and design; greener, lusher and with lots of trees Parkland golf courses feature well manicured and watered fairways, rough and greens. A parkland course may also feature plenty of elevation changes, although fairways are generally flat and tree-lined , lacking the knobs, knolls and weird bounces of links fairways. Most PGA Tour courses are parkland courses.

MOORLAND COURSES :

Moorland golf courses feature tough grasses and heather plus gorse. The fairways and greens are set on peaty soils and the rough generally consists of heath or coarse grass with gorse. In recent decades, the replanting of moorland areas with coniferous woodland has changed the general scenic setting of many moorland golf courses.

Whether you visit the Club as an individual, a small group or a Golf Society, you are sure of a true Welsh welcome from the friendly staff at South Pembrokeshire Golf Club

Where Visitors Receive True Welsh Hospitality! South Pembrokeshire Golf Club has seen many changes since it was first established in 1969 on the Old Barrack Hill on the outskirts of Pembroke Dock; with its well-maintained greens having been extended to provide a challenging 18-hole course, offering probably some of the best greens in the locality, as the Club's Secretary Mick Seal explained in a recent interview: "Our maturing course with numerous, quick, tricky greens will test the skills of golfers of all abilities. The par 4, 5th and par 3, 14th are fantastic holes with the former involving a long drive and a second over a deep tree filled valley to a raised green. The 14th sees you play back across the valley at the lower end to a green which slopes away in all directions."

It isn't just the Club's greens that have been improved over the years, South Pembrokeshire's Clubhouse originally formed part of the Old Defensible Barracks until 1995 when the Club relocated to the west end of Pennar. From its new location the modern, comfortable Clubhouse now gives visitors and members alike an opportunity to not only enjoy wonderful views of the course and Cleddau Waterway, but also take advantage of the fully licensed Spikes Bar & Television Lounge, a light, airy Restaurant with seating for up to 40 people and purpose-built Changing Rooms.

When asked if the Club welcomed visiting Golf Societies, Mick had this to say: "Our claim that South Pembrokeshire Golf Club is the perfect venue for Golf Society Days and Corporate Golf Days is not an idle boast. We offer a range of packages to suit all, each one tailored to provide a great day out. Our Golf Day pre-preparation will look after every aspect of your Golf Day." As well as getting the pick of tee times with advanced bookings, your Golf Society can also take advantage from the Club's private Changing Room, together with a bespoke meal and an exclusive area within the Clubhouse to maintain the privacy of your event.

Clwb Golff Abersoch Golf Club It's no wonder the members and staff at ABERSOCH GOLF CLUB are smiling as the Club was not only voted in the top 10 courses in the UK to play under 6,000 yards, but also the Club has been singled out as the 17th Best Course in Wales by a leading golf magazine.

“A Jewel on the Welsh Riviera”

Located on the beautiful Cambrian Coast in Snowdonia, North Wales, it comes as no surprise to learn the Club has been described by some visitors as “The Friendliest Golf Course in Wales”, “A Jewel on the Welsh Riviera” and “Fantastic Golf Course, Stunning Views”. If you are organising a day for your Golf Society in 2015 Abersoch should definitely come top on your North Wales golfing list. Visitors are sure of a warm Welsh welcome at Abersoch and the Club's friendly team will ensure visitors experience such a truly memorable day they will want to come back again and again. Offering a challenging mix of 18 holes on traditional links and parkland, the course is a must for golfers of all abilities, as Manager of the Club Dai Davies explained in a recent interview:

"Whatever your golfing ability our well-maintained course will test your skills. Take for example the signature 246 yard par 3, 3rd hole with elevated tee and panoramic views requiring an accurate drive downhill over both gorse and a water hazard to a sloping green with a bunker waiting at the back. Follow that with links holes hugging the coastline and contoured over a century ago through huge, natural sand dunes, accuracy is key here as wayward drives can be punished." It's not just the challenging course that attracts visitors to Abersoch Golf Club, its also the excellent facilities the Club provides to members and visitors alike. These include a welcoming Clubhouse, which provides the perfect relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a couple of drinks and a snack or meal, either in the comfortable Bar, or if the weather permits, on the patio area.

"Societies are more than welcome here at Abersoch Golf Club and we are happy to tailor almost any package you require including food, accommodation, play on other courses, transport etc. We appreciate that many society golfers will be coming to this part of the world to play a number of our courses, so we have teamed up with our neighbouring clubs to offer packaged discounted green fee rates."

Run by PGA Professional Alan, the Club's wellstocked Pro Shop is a 'must see' during your visit. Here you can browse a wide range of golfing equipment, accessories and clothing from leading manufacturers all of which is available at discount prices.

The Club always has guest and speciality beer barrels on tap, as well as the usual selection of bitter, lagers and cider, together with a full choice of wines and spirits as well as soft drinks.

"A mixture of links and parkland holes is on offer to the visiting golfer, with interesting and varied par three’s tough and risk and reward par 4’s and a couple of par 5’s that need to be negotiated to get any decent score out of them. We may be slightly in the shade of our more well known neighbours, but once visited, Abersoch Golf Club is never forgotten."

"For many societies we offer a discounted Bar card, enabling you to enjoy a reduction on the bar prices and we can also arrange minibus or coach transfers so that nobody is stuck having to drive."

GOLFERS ARE SURE OF A WARM ‘C The fact that pop superstar Olly Murs has recently started playing golf goes to highlight the modern game of golf is no longer a sport enjoyed by the 'older generation' but today attracts enthusiasts of all ages, from all walks of life. It is generally accepted that golf has its roots in Scotland, where it was first played in the Middle Ages. Yet the game of golf as we know it today was very nearly 'snuffed out' before it had begun and it certainly had to struggle to be accepted, faced with so much opposition. This is highlighted by the various legislations put in place to make it unlawful to play golf. These include the 1457 Act of the Scottish Parliament, an edict issued by King James II of Scotland, prohibiting the playing of the games of gowf (golf) and football as these were considered a distraction from archery practice for military purposes. Bans were again imposed in Acts of 1471 and 1491, with golf being described as 'an unprofitable sport'.

Today, golf enthusiasts worldwide can choose from a wide spectrum of excellent golf courses throughout the UK. Whilst it may be just 170 miles long and 60 miles wide Wales boasts some 200 challenging golf courses, so you’re never far from your next game. And there’s quality to match the choice. Bounded on three sides by 870 miles of windswept coastline, it’s hardly surprising that Wales is famous for its inspirational links courses. From the Open Qualifying Conwy in the north to Royal Porthcawl in the south, a journey along Wales’ coast is a pilgrimage no links-loving golfer should miss.

The one thing all Golf Clubs in Wales have in common is the tr as it should be’ which means you’ll always get a warm welcom of the Welsh Golf Clubs........but you can expect a relaxed and

CROESO’, OR WELCOME IN WALES Along the way, you’ll find the iconic Nefyn & District. Set on a narrow strip of land projecting into the Irish Sea, it’s often likened to playing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Watched over by the imposing edifice of Harlech Castle, the rugged links of Royal St Davids never lack for drama. Other highlights include Aberdovey – beloved of legendary sports writer Bernard Darwin – and Pennard’s famous ‘links in the sky’. But links are only part of the story. Our golfing menu is packed with flavours to suit every taste. At mountainous Cradoc, mature-tree-lined parkland combines with soaring views over the Brecon Beacons National Park’s highest peaks. Straddling the border between Wales and England, hilltop Llanymynech uniquely allows golfers to play in two countries in a single round. Located in the Brecon Beacons National Park and situated within 400 yards of the A470/A465 junction at Cefn Coed; the golf club was originally named 'Cilsanws Golf Club'. The original course consisted of ten holes with holes 1 and 2 being played once and a loop of 8 holes being played twice to constitute the full 18 holes. The 18th green at this time was some 800 yards from the clubhouse. In the late 1970’s two additional holes were added to bring the 18th green closer to the clubhouse and in 1997 the course was extended to 18 holes. The extension consisted of 7 new holes and the alteration of two existing holes. Over the years the course has had a number of name changes, and today the official name is Merthyr Tydfil Golf Club, but it is also widely known as 'Cilsanws' because of it’s location on Cilsanws Mountain. The first Captain of the club was Mr. T. Aneurin Rees who was the town clerk of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. An outstanding sportsman, he also played in the first rugby international between Wales and England at Blackheath in 1881, as well as playing cricket for The MCC. Merthyr Tydfil Golf Club welcomes visiting society groups for as little as £20 per person. The standard package includes bacon roll and coffee on arrival, 18 holes of golf and a two course meal . Current Green Fees stand at £10 for weekday golf and £15 at weekends and Bank Holidays. Memberships are also available at introductory rates.

The most northerly course in Wales, Prestatyn is set besides rolling sand dunes and only a few hundred yards from the sea. Sitting in 150 acres of superb unspoilt links land, the stunning course, welcoming clubhouse, breathtaking scenery and challenges like no other combine to provide for exceptional golfing and socialising.

The present course at Prestatyn was founded in 1905 and has undergone continuous improvements. Most recently in 1993, the club embarked on extensions to the clubhouse meeting the needs of the discerning golfer.

Whilst the prevailing south west wind is a feature of the course resulting in a low punched shot being a useful addition to the players' repertoire; the small greenkeeping team still find time in the winter to upgrade the course as highlighted by the beautifully revetted bunker across the front of the seventeenth par-three green.

Prestatyn Golf Club features in the Welsh Golfing Union calendar and is proud hosts to The Welsh Ladies Open Strokeplay Championship 2014, The Welsh Men's Amateur Championship 2015 and The LGU Senior Ladies British Open Amateur Championship in 2015.

A new seventh green, tucked away in the dunes, starts to develop the excitement, with the ‘island’ green, short, par-four ninth and long par-four tenth turning back into the prevailing wind. BIG SUCCESS FOR

TURFCARE LIVE EVENT

The Sand Pro 2040Z with zero-turn being put through its paces at Turfcare Live.

Toro distributor Lely UK has recently staged a brand new, open-air customer event. Called Turfcare Live, it gave users and new buyers the chance to see and test drive all the latest Toro turf equipment, and learn more about the company’s golf irrigation products. TYM Tractors and Otterbine water aerators, also distributed by Lely, were part of the show, too. The two-day event at the end of September was held at Wyboston Lakes, in Bedfordshire, which boasts its own 18-hole golf course set among 350 acres of countryside. It was a big success, attracting hundreds of turfcare professionals comprising a lively mix of greenkeepers, groundsmen, contractors and landscapers, who were joined by their local dealers.

Visitors gather to view the demonstrations at TurfCare Live. All were given the opportunity to test drive key pieces of equipment – from mowers, aerators and sprayers to top dressers, utility vehicles, TYM tractors and more – and gain valuable advice on operating techniques from Lely’s Toro experts on-hand. It was the same for Toro irrigation, where visitors were able to watch demonstrations and talk to experts about their needs – including the company’s new Infinity Sprinkler Series with innovative ‘Smart Access’ for quick and easy maintenance – and Otterbine pond and lake aeration products. Jeff Anguige, Lely’s Toro sales manager, says: “We decided to ring the changes this year and hold one event at a single venue instead of doing road shows across the country. I’m delighted to say our new Turfcare Live format worked extremely well and we were pleased with the fantastic turnout from everyone.” TYM and Otterbine products are distributed throughout mainland UK by: Lely (UK) Limited, 1 Station Road, St Neots PE19 1QH. In this day and age it's refreshing to find a family-run business that still holds fast to traditional values such as honesty, integrity and good value for money. Yet this is exactly what you expect from MacLeonard Golf, a forward-thinking company backed by highly experienced sta and modern support services.

O

As a third generation custom club builder, James has certainly put his mark on the company over the past 3 years; with clients now able to take advantage of the new Winter Golf Simulator located at the Company's recently refurbished Fitting Studio at Hollywood Lane, Worcestershire.

MacLeonard Golf clients can rest assured they will receive first class workmanship at less than Club Class prices; with JR Berwick and his team drawing on their skill and expertise to provide professional repair work covering everything from re-gripping, shaft fitting and removal, bending irons to correct loft and lie to within 0.25 degree accuracy. "We undertake to test every new shaft for flex and bend points, spine and align or flow set for ultimate load and release when swinging through the ball. We also supply new components to build a precision set of irons, hybrids, fairway woods, drivers and putters. Perfection is possible with our computerised method of swing matching using a MOI machine (moment of inertia) this system is great for sets of irons or woods."

"Clients are welcome to come along to the Fitting Studio and watch as our experienced team carry out all aspects of club repairs and custom assembly to professional player standard; in addition to building clubs for both amateur and professional players.

Little wonder then MacLeonard Golf has achieved an enviable reputation worldwide as builders of Custom Fit Golf Clubs, not just in the UK but over the whole of Europe. Explaining the secret to the company's year-on-year success James went on to say:

We are also leaders in the field with producing Long Drive Clubs, many of which have been successfully campaigned to win both European and world long drive championships. Such competitors as Scott Smith with his record breaking 539 yard drive (on a fairway not runway) or Michael Lindblom European long drive champion, not forgetting Adam Stacy - a home grown boy who was ranked 3rd in the world when using our Bang-o-Matic drivers."

"We use components from some of the most reliable OEM's including Nakashima Golf - producers of great drivers, fairways woods and irons, and Sukira Golf, offering the latest Japanese design Drivers, Fairway Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges. Then there is Bang Golf, manufacturers of the longest drivers on the planet - with its' Bang-o-Matic 460 driver having made a fantastic 539 yard drive in the REmax championships. Using such very highest quality components has enabled us to create the fantastic MacLeonard Stealth Driver.

riginally run only as a web-based company from the Channel Islands, MacLeonard Golf is now in the capable hands of Director, James Robert Berwick, who took over the reigns of the company 3 years ago when his grandfather retired. A GCA certified club repairer and custom club fitter/builder, as well as being a Member of the Professional Club-Building Society, James is 'perpetually in pursuit of excellence'.

Having achieved a trusted reputation with Golfers on tour,

Our shafts are supplied by Fujikura, considered the Rolex of Shafts, or the tour preferred UST Mamiya and their TSPX models, and now we offer Nippon Steel shafts from Japan, the finest we have ever come across. We also offer the ever faithfully True Temper Steel shafts because of their trusted reputation on tour. Our grips are supplied by Golf Pride, with their trusted Tour Velvet, and Multi Compound half cord series. Lamkin another long known brand with their crossline grips. Winn Grips are also offered as a component part. We have numerous shaft adapters to fit Taylor Made, Titleist, Cobra, Callaway and more. Not forgetting our 2nd chance golf balls from Titleist, Bridgestone 330S, and Taylor Made Penta Balls. We also offer the ever faithfull True Temper Steel shafts. When asked what advantages there were to having a custom-built Golf Club, James told us:

" Past experience has shown that it is far better to buy equipment which can then be expertly tuned into your swing and style, rather than the other way round”.

The best chance a golfer has to improve their game, and maximise their ability, is to have genuine custom built or fitted golf clubs. Less than 5% of Golfers play with golf clubs that are truly custom fitted. This is because most golfers believe, that being custom fit means buying OEM (Original equipment manufacturer) such as Callaway, Taylor Made, Nike etc, or what is promised in an advert when you swing their club. Most are not aware, or even made aware that fitting carts offer little more than three options in respect of lie angle, flex and possibly length. Others felt that filling out a questionnaire on a website constituted a custom fit. Regrettably this does not come close to real custom fitting.

”So, what does it take to make an expert club maker? " Most PGA professionals are not professional club-makers, they usually have a good sound knowledge of how certain clubs perform and a rudimental knowledge of how to fit someone, but they are not the same as Professional clubmakers. Real custom fitting is a complex and scientific knowledge, requiring precise measurements, individual swing and physical parameters. A wide range of clubheads, shafts and grips are made available, unlike OEM clubs which are assembled on a factory production line and fitted with given shafts and grips. Another fact is that it can be difficult to truly fit OEM clubs due to the way the club-heads are made, some are not bendable like the clubs Professional club-makers and fitters use.

In comparison to the 3 variables found in an OEM fitting Cart, a professional Club-fitter will use many including:

Shafts:

Flex, Torque, Weight, Spine alignment, Flex profile, Material composition & design.

Club-heads:

Loft angle, Lie angle, Lie angle, Hosel offset, Sole angle, Bulge, Roll,Face angle, Material composition & design.

Grips: Size,

Weight, Material & design, Length, Total Weight, Swing-weight, Moment of inertia, Set Make up. Derived from what is known as 'practical club fitting' used by most professional club fitters, MacLeonard Golf 's bespoke Club Fitting Service is continuously evolving, being reviewed and updated, in order to ensure it achieves by far the best results: "Factory built sets are rarely fine tuned to make sure the flex frequency remains constant throughout the set," James concluded, "Frequency matching would take them far to long and clubs built in factories are made for the majority, not the minority. Using Custom-built equipment could improve your game infinitely. We are not aware of anyone we have fitted with a set of clubs that has failed to improve."
