Hunter Global Tracking (HGT) was established in 2013, in Switzerland, to provide top quality cable-free tracking services. Based on extensive UN and commercial experience in transport & logistics in difficult environments, the company founder decided to enter the market to promote innovative tracking of mobile assets to reduce loss, theft and to improve reliable delivery. Similar tracking for persons is also part of HGT’s remit The main services of the industry leading organisation are to provide comprehensive tracking systems including the tracking unit itself, a management platform comprising maps, tables and statistics, remotely configurable by the customer for instant localisation of the asset being tracked. Hunter Global Tracking provides high end traceable products for the transport & logistics industry, the agricultural and construction plant sector, the leisure sector and medical needs for persons. The company was only set up a year ago to coincide with the 2014 market launching of key products. So far HGT is in advanced talks with many customers in the target sectors. In a recent interview with Hunter Global Tracking's Managing Director, Benjamin Liffen, he explained the company experience and expertise in the global tracking industry: •

What can customers expect to gain from investing in Hunter Global Tracking's products?

“Our devices are so intelligent; they really can be the solution to the most complex situation.” “Power use is also enhanced by clever use of ‘coma mode’: the units only use their power resources when moving,” he explained. “The units all have the ability of geo-fencing, this creates an area that the device should reside in. When it leaves the area, you will be alerted. This is ideal for situations when you are not close to the object being tracked.”

Knowing what speed something is moving, what directional “Total reliability in tracking anything, anywhere and at any change happened and if there are any sudden stops can be time: meaning peace of mind that if anything odd happens, vital information when the client needs proof or history of it gets reported,” Ben replied. “The units are versatile, easy a situation. This is all at a glance on the mobile platform. to install and the management platform, specific to each “Control rooms can even be alerted when a door is customer, is easy to configure and use.” opened - all this without any wires!” “One of the main advantages for purchasing HGT’s tracking units is that they are ‘cable-free’, meaning that they Discussing the durability of Hunter's products, Ben went are totally autonomous – driven by their own powerful on to say: “The battery life of HGT’s tracking units varies batteries, with no external power source used (like wires depending on the usage required and whether they are for to the ignition),” Ben continued. “This emphasis on ‘cable- external or internal use.” free’ is only possible using long-life batteries, rendered possible by recent technological advances in battery “The latest unit, the BULLDOG the size of half an A4 page, can transmit 1 position per day for 15 years – which optimisation.” basically means for 3 years with 5 positions per day. But A cable-free tracking unit’s power cannot be disabled by a the jewel in the HGT crown is the highly versatile same-size thief who would otherwise cut the power wire. The units solar-powered unit (the RIDGEBACK), which is also packed can be hidden on/in the mobile asset; if, for example, a with in-built sensors. This unit has just been launched midcontainer, trailer or crate is stolen, the unit will continue, 2014 after years of successful testing and is, virtually, everundiscovered, to transmit its position anywhere in the lasting. It can even transmit for 6 months without charge from the sun (like in a container stack or in a warehouse).” world, so that recovery is possible.

P R O D U C T S

• What sectors of the industry do you consider to be the company's main market? “HGT’s main market is twofold: for customers wishing to know both the exact position of their goods anywhere in the world, at any time, as well as journey history and situation of that cargo if sensors or interfaces are installed (like reefer management, parameters measuring the humidity, temperature, door tampering, light, etc.”) Ben explained. “Target users are shippers and transport operators such as hauliers/truckers, railway wagon operators or shippers using rail, forwarders, MTOs, container leasing companies, insurance companies to reduce risk, the agricultural and construction plant sector and the security industry.” “The versatile range of HGT tracking units can be used for all kinds of mobile assets and cargo packaging, from boxes/ crates to containers/tanktainers, IBCs, etc.” “The second target market is the leisure industry: yacht owners, sea/river vessel leasing companies, persons to be protected, classic cars, mobile homes & caravans, valuables in any type of packaging,” he continued. All of Hunter's devices are multifunctional, especially the solar RIDGEBACK and the BULLDOG which promote not just tracking but monitor a host of parameters. They come in versions with all the required sensors built-in and can even track from within a container or a truck. Attaching to the inside of a door within seconds, so no long installation process or drilling. The products require no complicated installation which strengthens the advantages of versatility and multifunctionality – freedom to put on a container one day, and on a truck the next, to monitor temperature in a box every hour or speed when moving, or both at the same time. “In the past people had negative thoughts when it came to solar power, but our German technology is so advanced that with such a small solar-powered device roughly the size of an A5 page, the tracking unit can be recharging itself while the driver has a tea break,” Ben explained. “Emphasis on the quality of German engineering can be seen on all our products. As a result our devices may not be as cheap as some others on the market but you get what you pay for. Tests have shown that the transport industry goes to rough places in extreme temperatures and in difficult conditions – hence the need for reliability. But anyone who drives a Mercedes or a BMW knows the difference German engineering makes!” “The same goes for our products; if your consignment or asset is valuable then you want it tracked and the cost of tracking is minimal in comparison to the loss or write-off of the cargo or asset.”

“Thieves are quick to catch up with technological advances.” he continued. “Pilferage and theft is on the rise everywhere, so is attempted jamming of tracking units; our devices strive to remain one step ahead of the criminals and their jamming techniques and some of our devices have ways around the jammers that keep you alerted and tracked even after a jamming attempt. HGT will remain at the forefront of technology.” HGT intends to maintain its costing structure. The purchase of any unit includes the unit itself and any accessory together with a world-wide SIM card including 2MB of data transmission per month and unlimited use of the management platform, for 24 months. So, for the first 2 years there are no additional costs, no monthly bills, no surprise charges for your tracking. After two years the only fee to continue usage will be a yearly telecom fee based on past consumption and this is a very low cost, a bit like paying for a 'pay as you go' SIM card. Ben highlighted that “this structure is a lot more affordable for customers in the long run and much easier for them to manage.” HGT is a global company, providing the same high quality services to any part of the world, especially to areas which are tough to operate in; even areas with no GPS coverage, HGT provides satellite communications with the same range of tracking units. The management platform is multilingual and the SIM cards have premium worldwide roaming. HGT now has agents in Southern Africa and Central Asia where tracking is difficult, telecoms sometimes unreliable but where knowing where your cargo or mobile asset is remains useful to avoid theft, pilferage and shipments‘ disappearing’ en route. Aside from the Transec event, Hunter Global Tracking will be exhibiting in Africa and Central Asia where HGT regional agents have already been set up. HGT will also attend other industry shows as the year unfolds, targeting safety, security, and risk reduction. Discussing the future of Hunter Global Tracking, Ben then concluded: “Many people think their situation is too complex to monitor with small, powerful mobile devices; but HGT trackers can communicate with almost any host. Our aim in 2015 is to produce solutions for many sectors but, at the same time, remain highly versatile. There is so much more you can get from our devices other than just tracking – our aim is to convince these markets of the usefulness of intelligent monitoring. So the company intends to promote its products in many new sectors requiring asset positioning, especially in emerging markets where telecoms are not great and the risk is high.”

I can see clearly now…

Axis Communications ensures that transport managers are not left in the dark about the benefits of IP digital video technology.

Grainy images, narrow fields of views, and unidentifiable individuals in footage – these are common complaints against analogue CCTV cameras.

Driving change

It’s hardly surprising therefore, that transport managers, in search of a more reliable surveillance solution, have widely begun to turn to digital technologies as more and more operators realise the benefits that digital IP or network video cameras offer. Nowhere are these benefits more evident than in the monitoring of expansive transport networks, such as road or rail infrastructures.

“One of the main drivers in the shift from analogue to network video, especially in the transportation arena, is image quality, or resolution,” explains David. “In parallel with the demand for better picture quality in the consumer market, a similar trend towards High-Definition (HD), and even 4K, can be seen in the video surveillance market.

“The transport environment is fairly unique in its complexity,” explains David Thomasson, business development manager for transportation. “Security incidents can occur anywhere – on board vehicles, at stations, warehouses and along the infrastructure itself. The real challenge is having the ability to cover all of these areas of the infrastructure simultaneously – especially when you appreciate that the larger transport systems handle hundreds of incidents every single day.” Since developing the world’s first network video camera in 1996, Axis Communications has established itself as the world-leading authority on digital surveillance technology and the application of that technology in a transport environment. Over the years, it has successfully installed thousands of cameras in railway stations, terminals and depots across the world, including Madrid, Moscow, Oslo, Prague, Stockholm and Sydney.

Another key advantage with network cameras is that they are not a ‘closed’ system like analogue CCTV. “By transmitting data over a standard ethernet cable, these cameras are essentially an open network-based system – whether that is a local network or the internet. This enables real-time viewing at any authorised location in the world, simultaneously, giving transport security personnel, management and control centres, and the emergency services access to the images – even on the move.” This helps at every stage of an incident, from detection and initial evaluation right through to response and investigation. However, David believes that network cameras shouldn’t be limited to purely security applications: “Using proven video analytics, the same camera can be used for a multitude of tasks across the transport network, such as facial recognition, crowd management through people counting and flows, intelligent perimeter protection, smoke detection, and even audio analytics in conjunction with microphones.”

Since developing the world’s first network video camera in 1996, Axis Communications has established itself as the world leading authority on digital surveillance technology

No limits The rapid progression of technology means that many of the limiting factors initially associated with network cameras no longer apply – including bandwidth and storage requirements - due to the use of image compression, which has a minimal effect on quality but reduces the amount of data to be transmitted. “Modern advances in compression technology mean that the bandwidth and storage requirements are about 20% of what they were a few years ago. At Axis, we have developed our own powerful processing chip, which has the most efficient compression technology in the industry, thereby reducing bandwidth even more than comparable cameras,” added David.

Another development from Axis’ R&D department is ‘Corridor Format’, which delivers a vertically orientated 9:16 portrait-shaped video stream from the camera. These technologies are particularly appropriate and helpful for the transportation sector as in many surveillance situations, the area being monitored can often be dark and more vertical than horizontal in shape – including passageways, vehicle aisles, and dark tunnels.

“As the technology improves,” David concludes “so does its application from monitoring stretches of rail or road for maintenance purposes, to the wider use of video analytics. At the same time, uptake by the transport industry is growing, as the wider benefits of network While low light levels have also historically been video, not just for security applications, are clearly being problematic for network video cameras, “That’s a thing seen at all levels.” of the past,” David counters. “Our development of a new technology called Lightfinder, enables the camera to see David Thomasson, in colour in near-darkness, without any additional light business development manager for transportation source.”

THINK....... Dual-View Security Screening & Threat Detection THINK........

totalpost

As a consequence of the increasing threat from terrorists worldwide we have all become more aware of the need for heightened security measures, especially when travelling abroad. Large numbers of people pass through Airports every day. This presents potential targets for terrorism and other forms of crime because of the number of people located in a particular location. Similarly, due to the high concentration of people on large airliners, the potential high death rate from attacks on aircraft, together with the ability to use a hijacked airplane as a lethal weapon, provides an alluring target for terrorism. In order to combat this marked rise in terrorists threats Airport Security is continually sourcing the latest in cutting-edge screening and detection methods in an attempt to prevent any threats or potentially dangerous situations from arising or entering the country. Since its inception in 2002, Totalpost has grown and gathered momentum and today provides a complete range of conveyer and cabinet X-Ray security screening equipment. The latest developments in X-Ray security screening is enabling screeners to see more; with screened items being viewed from different angles, in more detail and to a greater depth – all from one pass through the X-Ray system. Thereby, making threats from within cargo and baggage easier to detect, enabling freight to be handled much more efficiently. The deadline for all freight handlers to comply with dual view screening is coming into force in January 2015; with the majority of those effected by this change having already complied, thanks to the phased-in approach which has enabled those affected to purchase new equipment and change procedure where required.

Having signed a deal in 2011 to become the exclusive UK distributor of Astrophysics X-Ray Security Screening equipment, Totalpost is now able to provide the latest Astrophysics ultra high performance X-Ray threat detection and security screening models. This, combined with a commitment on the part of Totalpost's highly experienced team to provide a truly customer-focused service, which includes first class maintenance and service of the equipment, has made Totalpost the No.1 choice with discerning customers who screen either mail, parcel, baggage or freight items. Typically a 200kV X-Ray screening device can screen to a depth of 35-45mm of steel. However, the Astrophysics XIS 1818DV can typically screen to a depth of around 80mm of steel.

A spokesman for Totalpost added: "We also supply a range of higher powered screening equipment to screen to even greater depths, currently these are available up to 320kV. Astrophysics has coupled this power with 7ma of current (compared to the industry standard of 1ma). This high power combined with the high current provides exceptional screening penetration and image quality giving a power output In order to meet current legislation that from January of 2247 watts. 2015 single view can no longer be used for screening objects that are in excess of 1.3 metres, Totalpost has As an example we recently supplied the UK’s first supplied dual view X-Ray screening equipment into 320kV X-Ray screener to Freightnet Handling, many freight handlers across the UK in the last 18 a leading freight forwarding company based at months. Each of Reveal's body-worn evidence solutions include market leading DEMS evidence management software (formerly known as CARMA), which manages and collates information securely offering entire control room solutions – operating hand-in-hand with law enforcement personnel on the front line. DEMS is the world's most widely used digital evidence software management system, designed for its simplicity and security at every stage of the security process. The current market leader in the UK, which leads the way in body-worn video, Reveal systems are used by the majority of UK Police Forces, and are in use within prisons, local government and private security. The company's international activities are growing rapidly with supply chains established and software provided to clients in 30 countries and offices in the UK, USA and Hong Kong.

Case Study: Colin Green – Southern Railway Colin Green is the security manager of Southern Railway who, when first looked at the introduction of body cameras, managed a team of Rail Neighbourhood Officers operating on trains and stations in the south of England. “I became aware of the need to gather evidence when on shift and the need to have a tool which would act as a deterrent - there was a big need for gathering evidence”, Colin explained. “So I did some research looking for the sort of thing we utilise needed and found Reveal”, he continued. “I asked them if they had something suitable that could be used to collect evidence and to be used as a deterrent. They did indeed have exactly what we were looking for.” We quickly realised it wasn’t just about cameras, but also about data management, and the software called DEMS that came with the cameras was soon something that we found we couldn’t do without.

How have the cameras made a difference? “There is an increased visibility with the cameras. Our security staff wear hi-vis jackets a bit like the police, which can sometimes be provocative when dealing with drunk or aggressive people, they just don’t like the uniform. However, when we introduced the cameras people would ask “is that on?” and their behaviour changed, even when the cameras weren’t on, so the cameras made a difference immediately,” Colin explained. “The volume and quality of sound is superb on the RS3-SX. So is the HD video quality. Even in low light, which is where most of our patrols and work takes place, it doesn’t affect the quality. It’s a more robust camera too.”

Explosive demand for

dog detection services

2013

Keeping ahead of security threats with rapid screening and detecting solutions Andrew Goldsmith, Vice President, Global Marketing at Rapiscan Systems discusses the solutions that are best for rapidly and accurately detecting harmful substances. The need to be able to detect explosives, whether they are made from common or homemade materials that may exist within a single sample need to be detected rapidly and accurately. With an increased terror threat and criminal activity, the requirement for greater security measures has seen the introduction of many new technologies that can identify suspect packages or substances before they become a real danger. The detection of explosives and hazardous materials is a process that is carried out at a number of facilities, including airport cargo, border security and law enforcement. One of the biggest challenges is managing the requirements for a speedy process in order to compete in a global market, along with the requirement to thoroughly investigate cargo for security threats and contraband. Cargo screening is seen as a necessary bottleneck; however with some of the latest technology introduced to the market there is now a wider choice of solutions, higher throughput and increased detection capabilities. Cargo screening and the use of X-ray has played a key role in the cargo security landscape for a long time and with advances in image quality and software that can detect contraband substances are seeing greater detection capabilities.

When screening and detecting dangerous materials, one of the biggest challenges security professionals are faced with is the ability to differentiate between benign materials and genuine harmful threat materials. For many security staff, whether at events, airports or border control this process is seen to be costly and time consuming, leading to high false alarm rates and a slow throughput. With the latest screening and detection solutions, there is now the ability to be able to identify the actual chemical make-up on the objects being screened. With the increased terror threats, the need for security technology that takes into account radioactive substances is greatly needed. These materials have the potential to cause significant harm and must be screened with just as much caution as explosives, especially with their tendency to be shielded, making them nearly invisible to conventional radiation detectors. Recent developments in Radiation and Nuclear screening technology and ‘traditional’ x-ray screening have made it possible to integrate the two operations into a single checkpoint, allowing operators to pinpoint conventional threats or contraband within cargo while simultaneously detecting radioactive materials.

Rapiscan Systems, a global leader in supplying security inspection systems has a number of products and solutions that ensures the screening and detection of such dangerous substances is made aware of quickly and efficiently. Rapiscan has just launched its latest explosive trace detection device, Detectra HX, which is a lightweight and low-cost handheld device with rapid and accurate capabilities that are designed with high throughput and high detection capabilities essential for law enforcement, event and border protection professionals. The Detectra HX can pick up a range of substances with only a single sample resulting in a lower false alarm rate. It also offers a touch-free inhalation sampling method, providing protection from often compositionally unpredictable and dangerous substances. Designed to minimise operating costs and increase uptime, it requires only two consumables to operate, making it considerably easier to maintain compared to other available trace detection devices.

The Detectra HX is capable of detecting trace explosives in both particulate and vapour form on surfaces that may have directly or indirectly absorbed explosive residues. The new handheld device not only detects threats with tremendous accuracy, but also features an intuitive user interface with just three-buttons, detecting threats in seconds. With operator training only taking as little as an hour, the Detectra HX is easy to deploy.

For your chance to see the Detectra HX in action and meet the Rapiscan team, they will be on stand D20 at Transport Security Expo on 2-3 December at London Olympia. The Rapiscan team will be more than happy to discuss in more detail the other security inspection systems they have to offer and how they implement such systems into a variety of facilities.

The PSSA is the trade association for companies involved in the supply of equipment and services designed to provide the highest levels of physical protection for sites and their perimeters from terrorist or criminal attack that involves the use of extreme force or explosives. During a recent interview, PSSA Chairman, Laurence Goode discussed the Association's membership, he explained: “The Perimeter Security Suppliers Association (PSSA) core membership is comprised of suppliers of high security perimeter products. These include hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) equipment, such as bollards, blockers and security gates, high security fencing and their installers. These are the sort of products which get specified for critical national infrastructure installations and other facilities that may draw terrorist attacks or organised criminal activity. These would include nuclear and other power generation plants, transport hubs, financial and IT centres – and a host of other facilities that need high standards of physical security.” PSSA members’ products and expertise were part of the successful efforts at the London Olympics and Commonwealth Games and, equally, you will find their presence at lower profile places such as retailers’ distribution centres. There is also increasing interest in ensuring high security protection for temporary facilities and events – for example major construction projects (such as Crossrail and, in the future, HS2) and the growing number of outdoor festivals where large numbers of people congregate. All these can be high security hot spots.

“The PSSA’s mission is to raise standards within our industry sector, so members can expect to participate in, and benefit from, standards development and promotion – and also have their companies and products listed as an information source for specifiers, consultants, end users and other industry professionals,” Laurence continued. “This is all part of our independently run Verification Scheme. We are now generating interest from overseas, which attunes with the increasing activity of our members in international markets. The benefits to end users are that they can take confidence from the fact that PSSA verified products have been subject to the appropriate testing, regulatory compliance and installation criteria that they have a right to expect from high security products – but before the PSSA Scheme they might have been struggling to find. We also work closely with CPNI who have given us great encouragement in our drive to raise industry standards.” To further develop and promote the work of the PSSA, the organisation has implemented two new initiatives. Firstly, they gathered together a new Advisory Panel drawn from a cross-section of senior experts – comprising consultants, specifiers and end users. The first formal meeting of the Panel will be held at the Transport Security Expo, which takes place in December 2014. “Essentially we will be asking them two questions 'how are we doing?' and 'what else would you like to see the PSSA tackling?' explained Laurence. “It is crucial that we keep close to the marketplace and deliver on initiatives and services which meet its requirements.” The Panel plans to meet twice a year. Secondly, the organisation are also launching the 'PSSA Endorsement Scheme'. This will provide the opportunity for Panel members and other stakeholders to formally give their support to the PSSA and underline their 'buy in' to the Association's objectives and the Verification Scheme which has been established. “We plan to 'go live' on this early in the New Year. It will provide an important rallying point for those committed to raising standards in our sector,” Laurence concluded. The PSSA is increasingly being asked for help in identifying products and services for high security applications. Particular areas of interest include installation inspection. The Association is also involved in higher level consultations touching on Home Office policy and the development of longer term security strategies. The PSSA will be located on stand J15 at Transport Security Expo. The stand will provide the chance for prospective members to get the low down on our activities and member benefits – and for other visitors to get information on where to source high security products. Other activities see the PSSA set to hold its next annual conference on Thursday 11th December 2104 at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, 33 Queen Street, London EC4. The day will feature Home Office and CPNI speakers – as well as provide insights into and updates on PSSA activities. For an invitation contact the PSSA offices on the details below.

C Based Northern Ireland; Sensurity has revolutionised the perimeter intrusion detection (PID) market by pioneering and patenting intelligent security systems with unparalleled durability. Sensurity systems provide a reliable and intelligent way of detecting intruders. As a spin-off from research at Queen’s University Belfast, the company uses advances in digital technology to create a perimeter security solution that offers maximum detection with minimum nuisance alarms. The type of digital microwave perimeter fencing provided by the company was previously limited to use in sites of heightened security such as prisons; however, having set about revolutionising the industry, Sensurity have established a range of premium products for use in broader applications. Though new to the market, Sensurity’s products are becoming widely used in various industries including critical infrastructure, airport security as well as oil & gas industries. Sensurity’s flag ship product, HALO is the world’s most fully-featured microwave PID system, with the smallest installed footprint. Its digital design and narrow active alarm zone radically reduces false alarms, giving end users next generation security at the cutting-edge.

HALO brings a new level of intelligence to the perimeter security market. The one-box dual technology system combines state-of-the-art digital microwave and robust active IR detection. HALO integrates with any system, it provides secure data routing for peripheral sensors, maintains system integrity using robust authentication, and offers secure channel communication The low cost of system installation is just another advantage of HALO, with embedded blind spot coverage, HALO uses infra red sensors to provide close detection coverage up to 2.5m from each sensor – meaning that it can be installed back to back using one mounting pole per two nodes reducing installation costs and for set up. The system uses the highest level of digital intelligence through advanced signal processing – constantly monitoring and adjusting to changes in environmental conditions. HALO is hardened to operate in tough environments. It is weather proof, temperature tolerant, and vandal resistant

The HALO product is continuously and rigorously tested and has attained the toughest certified standards.
