An Exciting Year Ahead! Fall is the most beautiful time of year for painting outdoors from life here in the high desert and 25 of the most talented artists from around the country have won the privilege of demonstrating that in our 15th Annual Sedona Plein Air Festival, Oct 12 – 19, 2020. This year’s event has been blessed by two anonymous ‘angels’ that donated a total of $10,000 in prize money! The event features paintouts with all the artists, a Keynote by Festival Judge, Dave Santillanes, demonstrations, special receptions, and thanks to Lisa Dahl and Dahl Restaurant Group, a new paint-out at the beautiful Mariposa–Latin Inspired Grill! (See page 3) The festival is embedded in a wonderful season of landscape painting workshops with some of the best instructors in the nation representing a diversity of styles. (See pages 16–17) On December 14th Noon to 3pm our vibrant ceramics department provides the community with a bountiful Loving Bowls event benefiting non-profits that provide important services to the community. It is a chance to get together and enjoy delicious chili, shopping for bowls, and share camaraderie with friends while defending bids in a special silent auction. Then we start the New Year off with a bang! January features “31 Women Artists” a unique exhibition modeled on a 1943 show in NYC by Peggy Guggenheim. From a private collection, 6 artists are represented from that original exhibition and we invite contemporary women artists to submit work for the remaining 25 positions. The Exhibition embraces two dynamic themes– the empowerment of women in and through the arts and the continuing influence of Surrealism in contemporary art. (See page 15)

Texture Color Feeling Jan Sitts created this richly colored painting with a variety of fibers, pastes and papers which is common to much of her work. This textural process is created intuitively exploring themes that relate to nature and earth. Painting the “raw”canvas with multi-layers of paint and patterns. She often embeds iridescent foil leaf and powdered paints. The layers of acrylics and other materials used are archival, giving an “organic” depth and luminosity so desired… The only limitations are the boundaries of your imagination. Remember! Every Workshop is different.

Deanne McKeown I find inspiration for my sculpture in the wildlife and varied cultures of the West, frequently utilizing my work as an opportunity to make humorous or social comment through art. I am drawn to interesting associations. The animal characters in my work are frequently metaphors for human thought and behavior. I often incorporate found objects - sometimes they are the beginning of an idea, sometimes they find their way into a work during the process. I am proud to have been a member of the Sedona Arts Center for forty of their sixty years and trust this fine organization will continue to bring even more cultural enrichment to our community.

Byron McKeown
I always ask questions about everything... why, how, what if? I believe this is the foundation of creativity, and this exploration of the world around me has led to experimentation in a number of visual languages. I always endeavor to find answers for myself, knowing that it is important to identify a problem before trying to solve it. I approach each project as a challenge and in doing so, I discover the frustration inherent in each piece, but also the excitement of exploring the creative process. Those explorations led me to Sedona where my wife and I created three galleries. Now, in semi-retirement, I work in wood, metal and semi-precious stones to create collectible knives and walking sticks.

As a proud member of the Sedona arts Center, I commend this organization on past achievements and know that the coming years will bring even more awareness of the value of the arts in our community.

Christ ie Palmer
Expressing the wideness and wonder of the world, Christie Palmer’s contemporary acrylic paintings dynamically transform ordinary motifs with the integration of abstract elements. Each painted surface synthesizes enigmatic organic shapes, characteristically fluid lines, and adeptly applied color. Suggesting a reverence for the beauty of nature, her work stems from a heartfelt sense of gratitude. Palmer maintains she has “always been an artist,” remembering her first art class at the age of four. In atypical acrylic use, Palmer patiently layers multitudinous water-like acrylic washes coupled with infinite blending building the richness of color and glow well-known in her work. Each painting represents a genuinely personal journey in its creation and encourages relinquishing known references to journey within the work itself. Palmer has worked from her West Sedona studio since 2011. Facing the mountains, it is at once an energizing and serene space. Awarded in various juried shows in Chicago, California, and Sedona, her work is found in private collections in the U.S. and abroad. Palmer’s paintings are represented in the Sedona Arts Center Fine Arts Gallery, and recognized for their linear refinement, purity of form, flawless technique and unique peacefulness.
