Why is it Important to Have a Social Life in College Everyone knows that an education couldn’t be complete without having experience with social cues and interaction. Not only is it important to have a social life in college for educational purposes, but it can also lead to having happier lives, lifelong friends, and even being more successful.

Round Education After graduating high school, leaving the hometown, and coming to college, a lot of people have their “not in Kansas anymore “realization moment. While most college freshman are still “finding” or “creating” themselves, a lot of older classmen have already done that and are much different than anyone the freshmen may have met in high school. There is more diversity and every new person you meet teaches you a new lesson about how you can act best with anyone in any social setting.

Happier Living It goes without saying that if you are not hanging out with friends, you are probably not very happy. Even the die-hard studiers and homework doers need a break to just relax and hang out with friends. Every year when winter comes, more and more students are prone to depression and the free counseling offered at universities becomes less and less available. This could be avoided if those students had a social life to balance out their schoolwork.

Lifelong Friends College is milestone in every person’s life that they look back on with fondness. Even the not so nice stories about roommates are memorable years later that people tell while looking back at the pictures of them all wearing matching Florida State t-shirts. Not only is it great to reconnect with these friends years later or to even continue to stay in touch until you have kids that you name after each other, but it is a great way to network. Friends from college are instant references for potential jobs, or they may have skills that could benefit your start up business. Without a social life in college, these friends would never have been met and those beneficial connections could never have been made.

Success When people think of typical college social lives they think of parties and underage drinking. However, this is not always the case as college students are even more prone to have a good time attending sports games or just hanging out watching movies while baking cookies. When students are able to balance their studies with their social lives it has been proven to make these people more successful later in life as well. They are more likely to be able to multi-task, and balance work and family life while they are pursuing their career. Many students take their friends and social life in college for granted, not realizing that the connections they are making are essential to their education, success, and can even be saving their life. It is just as important to pursue a social life in college as it is to pick a major, and to never forget the connections made there.
