Ormond Beach south to New Smyrna Beach 13

Bicycling on hard-packed sand at low tide is a great way to burn those calories you indulged in last night. There are 23 miles of gorgeous beach in the Daytona Beach area. Ride as far as you like, and when you get hot, stop and take a dip in the surf! Ormond Beach Scenic Loop The Ormond Beach Scenic Loop Trail is a 30+ mile route on some of Volusia’s most picturesque roads. For a good cardiovascular workout, begin early and plan to finish early. Always wear a helmet and bring water. This ride is for experienced bicyclists used to sharing the road with cars. You’ll see historic neighborhoods, salt marshes and the ocean. Check out our map on page 26 for the entire route. Peddle to Tomoka Park from Granada Bridge We picked a short segment with old oak trees that form a tunnel of cool air to keep you comfortable in warm weather. In the N. Beach Street neighborhood, old Florida nostalgia overrules speed. The scenic 5-mile ride to Tomoka State Park starts at the Bailey Riverbridge park on the northwest side of Granada Boulevard (SR 40) Bridge. Turn

right on N. Beach Street. The small, weathered boathouse sitting on pilings on your right is the 1910 Ormond Yacht Club. Tree branches make lacy patterns on the pavement as you cruise past homes with large yards and expansive oak trees. Just past Inglesa Avenue, turn right at the Tomoka State Park sign and follow the hard-packed dirt path to the park entrance. This natural environment of rivers and maritime forest is good for body and spirit. Visit the Tomoka Outpost for refreshments. Admission: $2 per bicycle. Ponce Inlet Trail Ponce Preserve, a 41-acre park with free parking, is a good starting point for this 8-foot wide, paved trail. Feel the ocean breeze in your hair as you ride your bicycle 3 miles south along A1A to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Marine Science Center. The path parallels dunes and maritime hammocks. Shade is limited so ride early. Check out the Green Mound State Archaeological Site, an ancient Indian shell midden in the center of the Preserve. The bird watching is excellent from the Atlantic to the Halifax River. For bicycle rentals see our Visitor Services on page 44.

DINING a world of dining choices

W

When you are on vacation, deciding where you eat is as important as what you choose from the menu. It’s no surprise that we have a multitude of restaurants to please taste buds of every description. After all, our visitors come from all over the world. A delicious seafood dinner in an eye-pleasing restaurant with just the right ambiance is universally popular with families on vacation. From a riverside deck with umbrella tables to a glass-walled marina dining room high above a latticework of boats, the water views around here are spectacular. Fresh Florida seafood, prepared as you like it, broiled, steamed, blackened or sautéed, is as delicious as it is healthy. Our favorites include scrumptious selections of shrimp, oysters and clams caught in Florida waters. Our chefs at locally owned restaurants and bistros are renowned for creating innovative menus. So indulge your taste buds in something adventurous like Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Indian, Spanish or French cuisine.

Turtle nesting season

begins May 1st through October 31st The yellow markers and netting mean a sea turtle has deposited her eggs in the sand!

Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of at least 30 feet.

All sea turtles are endangered, but Loggerheads are most commonly seen on our beaches. Hatchlings—only about 2 inches long—wait until the sand cools at night before scrambling to the water where they spend several years floating in seaweed beds.

Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as this may frighten nesting females and confuse the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea.

Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood.

If you see a distressed turtle, call Volusia County Beach Patrol at 386-239-6484 or 386-756-7491

Avoid walking or cycling in netted areas. Do not disturb markers or protective screening.
