A wealth of
CTIVITIES for you to TRY
In the Nation’s Oldest City, you won’t be wondering what to do as much as what to do next. From a historical perspective, 450 years lie between St. Augustine’s past and present. The Ancient City is home to the Fountain of Youth, the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse and a 17th century fort, to name a few. The NEW Colonial Crew Revue, takes place in the shade of the Colonial Quarter’s stately oak. This highly interactive show will have you roaring with laughter as you participate in magic and comedy skits. This is a fun affair for the entire family. The architecture, much of it hailing from the Henry Flagler era, is astounding. One could spend an entire day admiring the structures created by the railroad magnate. But you will want to venture indoors as well where you will discover the city’s real hidden treasures. The Flagler College Solarium has been closed to the public for decades, so consider yourself fortunate to be in the area following a $2.3 million restoration. NEW Tours of the 4th floor parlor located over the Rotunda provide breathtaking, panoramic views of the city. Don’t forget your camera!
6
There are lots of ways to see the city and immerse yourself in history. Explore the core historical area on the trolley for a fun, narrated tour. When you’ve seen everything, use it as transport to visit sites of interest, shops and dining venues. To help stretch your dollars, use the valuable coupons in the back of this guide. For a unique view of the city, see it the old fashioned way – take a horse drawn carriage ride and listen between the clip-clop of the horse’s hooves as your guide briefs you on the area’s sites and history.

S A R T X E AROUND TOWN Aviles Street is located in the heart of St. Augustine’s historic district. It is a quiet oasis amid the bustling traffic and glowing lights of the surrounding city. Here, you can view historic buildings, relax in one of the many quaint cafes or restaurants, and shop for one-of-a kind items. The Old Spanish Trail Zero Mile Marker symbolizes the completion of the Transcontinental Auto Trail that connected the Spanish Colonial towns of St. Augustine in the east to San Diego to the west. Dedicated in 1928, the coquina marker sits near the St. Augustine Welcome Center. 904-825-1000. The St. Augustine Marketplace and Flea Market is a typical weekend market. It attracts hundreds of dealers selling their wares and a Farmer’s Market brimming with fresh produce. Food booths and hand crafted items abound and you just might discover a one of a kind treasure. Open Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. 2495 State Rd. 207, St. Augustine.
HISTORY HUNTERS Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is one of Florida’s prettiest parks. While George Washington didn’t sleep here, he apparently had a relative who once owned this spectacular estate. It lies between the coquina rocks that line the beach to the east, to the Matanzas River to the west. The formal gardens are breathtaking: overflowing with azaleas, roses and camellias, showcased by old oaks that surround the colorful flowers. Two miles south of Marineland. The Fort Matanzas National Monument is the 18th century fortress that protected the southern approach to the city. Hop on the free ferry and head to the Monument. You can explore the fort on your own or listen to informative talks by park rangers. The view from the fort or attached dock are not to be missed. Located 14 miles south of St. Augustine on scenic Hwy. A1A, 904-471-0116. The Old City Gates and Wall, located on the north end of St. George Street once protected the city from the British and pirates. It is constructed of coquina and palmetto logs. In 1704, the wall stretched from the fort to the river.
Insider’s Guide to Fun in theSun BACK TO NATURE Anastasia State Park has an $8 per car admission, but it’s well worth the price to visit the four miles of sundrenched, white sandy beach. There are other reasons to visit: fishing, hiking, boating and kayaking to name a few. Paddleboards, sailboards and canoes can be rented on the premises. Stoke up the grill and have a picnic. 1340 Florida A1A, St. Augustine. 904-461-2033. The Vilano Beach Fishing Pier is a must see whether you come to fish or just take a stroll. It sits next to a marina, so you can watch the boats coming and going. Pack a picnic and watch as pelicans compete with fisherman to get the catch of the day. Best of all, the experience is free! 260 Vilano Rd., St. Augustine. 904-299-0655. At Princess Place Preserve State Park, watch the wildlife and enjoy 1,500 acres of hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Check out the cottage built by Henry Cutting in 1886. It holds the distinction of being Flagler County’s oldest structure. Admission is free. 2500 Princess Place Rd., Palm Coast. 386-313-4020.
CURIOSITY SEEKERS The Florida Agricultural Museum reflects on a bygone era. Shell corn, pump water and explore a typical Florida farm, circa 1880. Take an old-fashioned wagon tour and see an authentic homestead and general store. $9 adults; $7 kids. Wed. – Sun. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7900 Old Kings Rd. and US 1, 17 miles south of St. Augustine. The Old Senator is the oldest live oak tree in St. Augustine and it sits smack in the middle of a Howard Johnson’s parking lot! It’s estimated to be more than 600 years old! 137 San Marco Ave., St. Augustine. The Bridge of Lions spans the Intracoastal and connects St. Augustine with Anastasia Island. The historic landmark was erected in 1927 and has what’s known as a bascule bridge. It’s moveable and opens wide to allow boat traffic to pass. If you are looking for iconic photos of the city, snap this picture!
ROMANCE The St. Augustine Love Tree is an oak wrapped around a Sable palm that could hold the secret to undying love. Rumor has it that a couple sharing a kiss under The Love Tree will have a romance that will last till the end of time. That’s based on a legend that if the trees were to be separated, both would die. Isn’t love grand? Cordova St., South of the Welcome Center. By day, The Lightner Museum is a not to be missed museum. By night, the grounds of the museum are transformed into romantic spot for a little ‘alone’ time. Cozy up on one of the benches that line the covered walkway and enjoy the ambiance of the soft lighting covering the plants. 75 King St., St. Augustine.

Dining venues range from waterfront to sidewalk and selections run the gamut from stacked fish sandwiches to sumptuous seafood platters. Regional and local specialties abound and no matter the time of day, you’ll find the food and the ambiance to make it a deliciously memorable experience, whether you dine indoors or out. selections to a new level. His unmatched flavors will have you returning again and again. For a deliciously different experience, stop by Colonial Quarter’s Spanish-style eatery, Taberna del Caballo. It is the area’s NEW gathering place where you can sample tasty treats and their uniquely prepared, “signature” Sangria. A number of the non-chain restaurant owners are members of the St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association or SAIRA. Its associates are committed to surpassing your expectations. These members are also dedicated to supporting their community. In fact, locals will go out of their way to visit these very special eateries, all of which offer affordability and a friendly atmosphere.

AND THE FLAGLER BEACHES
Relaxing...on the "Quiet Side of Florida" This peaceful Florida East Coast destination is located three miles off of I-95 between busy Daytona Beach and historic St. Augustine. The charming seaside village of Flagler Beach is free of the typical influx of chains and high-rise hotels and was recently nominated by Budget Travel as one of “America’s Coolest Small Towns”. Cast a line off the iconic Flagler Beach Pier or surf some of the best waves in Florida. With 19 miles of pristine, cinnamon-colored beaches, parts of which are pet-friendly, you’re sure to find your own private beach!
