A wealth of

CTIVITIES for you to TRY

The fascination of St. Augustine starts as you approach the colonial town, the streets narrow, spires rise to point to the sky and historic sites compete for your attention. It’s a city with a thousand stories built on the dreams of explorers, colonists and railroad men. Inquisitive travelers revel in historic remnants of Timucuan, Spanish, British and early American residents. Remarkable museums are bursting with artifacts. There’s a lot to absorb. Beyond the city gates there is an entirely different scene. The view from the lighthouse or a helicopter ride confirms how much water surrounds the city. From boogie boarders to grandparents, there’s a style of water sport to suit you perfectly.

NEW narrated tours aboard the El Conquistador Speedboat cover maritime history, landmarks and local marine life. Exhilarating and fun, the ride is appropriate for accompanied children and anyone who enjoys being on the water. Saint Augustine Boat Tours with Brian Hubbel is now offering NEW tours for spotting dolphins and wildlife, tours of

6

the Historic City landmarks, and sunset cruises that combine nature and history with options to add fishing. Outdoor activities are everywhere: surfing, horseback riding and cycling with views of the Atlantic. Saltwater or freshwater fishing trips start at marinas that can provision you with everything you’ll need. This is also a good time to play a round of golf at the one of the worldclass courses in the area. At night ghostly walking tours are loaded with tales scary enough for bursts of edgy laughter. Romantics might prefer a carriage ride, letting the echo of hooves on the narrow streets change their mood to one more likely to bring sweet dreams.

Bridge of Lions At sunset this is the most romantic view of the Old City. A marble lion statue is the perfect background for a photo. The historic bridge connecting the city with Anastasia Island opened in 1927. St. Augustine’s Love Tree is a sable palm growing out of the heart of an oak. If separated, both will die. The legend says if you kiss under the tree, you’ll have everlasting romance. It works! Couples come back on their anniversary to kiss again. South of the Visitor’s Center on Cordova St.

FOR CURIOSITY’S SAKE The Tolomato Cemetery is the earliest burial ground, built by Catholics within the Old City walls on the site of an old Indian village. Located on Cordova Street south of the Visitors Center. Tours 3rd Sat., 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

INING

When you are on vacation, deciding where to dine is just as important as what you eat. Waves of settlers to St. Augustine brought the cuisine of many cultures to our shores. Our taste buds have been adapting ever since, so it’s easy to escape the ordinary here anytime. Seafood fresh from Florida waters is an especially good choice. From dockside bars to high-end restaurants, a fillet of fish is Florida’s most iconic dish. It comes in almost every style, from deep fried to fish on a bun, and seared on the grill to smothered in a creamy sauce. The setting is built for relaxing when your table overlooks the waterfront or in a cozy, candlelit room. Whether you crave the straightforwardness of great pizza or culinary wizardry, you’ll find it here. The NEW frozen treats at Hyppo Gourmet Popsicles are all the rage

18

downtown on Hypolita Street. The fresh fruit emulsions freeze down to tangy smooth pops, and they ship them anywhere too. The Corner Bar is NEW but already destined to become an icon. The gigantic projection screen was an instant draw for sports bar fans, but it’s their neighborly attitude and lively atmosphere that brings people back to shoot the breeze. Downtown bustles at night when the locals flow in for dinner or live music. Join them for a nightcap at one of the clubs. If you still have a twinge of hunger, order a cupcake or a dessert with two forks. Either way, make it a people-watching opportunity and finish the evening with a stroll near the Bridge of Lions for the best view of the city lights against the night sky.

S HOPPING? Come for the

You’ve come to the

Right Place.

If this is your first shopping trip to St. Augustine, you probably have a million questions about where things are. The Old City is known for quaint specialty shops with nautical artifacts, old maps and French and English antiques. It’s likely that you will find unique selections every time you open a door. Pedestrian friendly streets and a few restaurants scattered among the shops help make your shopping experience pleasant. On narrow St. George Street some shops have quaint second stories that extend out over the street and shade passersby. Within walking distance in the Old City are many galleries displaying sculpture, photography, paintings and cutting edge works by emerging artists. Shopping is a mini adventure so expect some surprises along the way like contemporary precious gem jewelry and innovative home accessories. And if you find a special purchase, many of our shops will ship it home for you.

The St. Augustine Outlets have expanded, offering a NEW Gucci store, the only one in the Southeast. They also have top authentic fashion brands, including Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH. The oldest thoroughfare in the city, Aviles Street, was restored recently. Today shoppers can stroll in and out of several art galleries, specialty boutiques and gather at a friendly wine bar. The best part of shopping may be purchasing a gift for someone special, but remember, whatever you select for yourself may become the perfect memento of your trip

The city’s oldest locally owned clothing store, the H.W. Davis Co., founded in 1894, offers select ladies and men’s sportswear and quality shoes with brand names labels you will recognize. It’s recently announced a NEW line of Vera Bradley patterns and specialty items.

Louis Comfort Tiffany

at Flagler College The former Hotel Ponce de Leon greeted guests in lavish Gilded Age splendor for eighty years until it entered a second life as Flagler College in 1967. The interior designer was Louis Comfort Tiffany, already known for developing lavish stained glass windows and lamps. In the 800-seat Dining Hall, students lounge in the same carved oak chairs imported from Austria for the hotel’s opening in 1888. While taking their meals, they can gaze upon Tiffany’s stained glass windows any time they look up. The musician’s gallery above them

bathes the great room with golden light. On the mezzanine landing, the Bacchus windows are intricate and bold. For the ceilings, Tiffany collaborated with the celebrated George W. Maynard on murals in the stunning 68-foot dome in the Rotunda and the Dining Hall, which evokes a Spanish galleon and events in Florida history. Henry Flagler hired the most prominent New York architectural firm, used the finest European materials and chose the Spanish Revival design to complement the city’s colonial history. Today the nationally designated landmark is still a vital part of the modern city and a monument to his vision.

Tours at the Florida Agricultural Museum cover all you never knew about the state up to the 1940s. The tractor-pulled wagon ride through the woods to the 1890s restored homestead, dry goods store, barns and citrus buildings is full of surprises. Along the tour you’ll see rare Cracker Cattle and Cracker Horses, descendants of animals brought by Spanish explorers. Learn about early cattlemen and visit the special Black Cowboy Exhibit. Inside the 1890s dry goods store you’ll see what store-bought necessities the settlers needed. Children will enjoy hands-on farmyard activities like feeding chickens, collecting eggs and pumping water. Afterward have a snack at the Caldwell Dairy Barn. If you have time, take the self-guided tour to examine the archeological site of a water-powered sawmill that made boards used in buildings still standing in St. Augustine. A Civil War Re-enactment will be presented on October 14, 15 and 16. Trail rides on Cracker Horses and Quarter Horses are held all year. The museum is a trailhead for hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails that cross over the I-95 Land Bridge. Admission: $8; Kids $6. Family rates. Free to veterans on national holidays. Open Wed.- Sun. 7900 Old Kings Rd. and U.S. 1, Palm Coast, www.myagmuseum.org, 386-446-7630.
