my utmost efforts to achieve our goal of bridging the gap.

It is a great honor for me to extend my warmest wishes to you all this great New Year full of happiness and success. In November 2019, I took up the presidency of our great organization after the successful General Assembly of the 2019 JCI World Congress in Tallinn, Estonia. Together with my team, we have reviewed the performance and achievements of JCI, and moving forward, we have also set objectives for the year 2020 and committed ourselves to implement them.

Finally, you will agree with me that unity is strength and that when there is teamwork and collaboration, extraordinary things can be achieved. It is therefore my wish that we work well together toward our common vision to be the leading global network of young active citizens.

As stated in the 2020 Plan of Action, this is the year to accelerate transformation, and we would achieve this as a team by bridging the gap between vision and reality and I am 100% convinced that with your hard work and compassion, 2020 would indeed be a year of unspeakable transformation.

We are everyday changemakers. We are JCI!

We rely on you young people to advance sustainable impact in the world and drive the world in a positive direction.

to let them have confidence in their self-improvement and become more proactive in improving our society. JCI is an international non-governmental organization, and our mission is to be a global leading young active citizen network. JCI mainly adopts a one-year leadership system. In another way of explanation, each position on our JCI can only have one year to study and lead. In the eyes of the public, you may feel that our tenure is too short to truly learn. But we want to say that it is with such a one-year to lead system that we can understand how important time and efficiency are. For effective leadership in a one-year to lead system of JCI you must have begun with the end attitude. Because of this, we will see many of our JCI members over the age of 40 continue to participate in our activities at various JCI events. The reason for returning is because they enjoy the feeling of being a JCI member in the past.

Dear JCI Members and Friends, It is my great pleasure to be elected as the President for year 2020. I would like to thank the Board for their trust and their full support in me. Besides that, I would like to thank all my Past Presidents and members for the time, energy, effort that they had sacrificed, to guide me and make this miracle happened. Also, my compliments to our Organizing Chairman Valent Tan and all his IAB committees for organizing this IAB successfully. Without their hardwork and dedicated commitment, we would not have such a wonderful installation event. In conjunction with our 30th Installation, Anniversary and Awards Banquet, my president theme is “Enjoy Your JCI Journey. Once a youth join JCI as a member, we will explain to them the area of opportunities in JCI, so, they can plan their JCI career path earlier. Besides, JCI is a platform for members to learn how to carry out an activity. From activities, they can learn to organize, plan, execute and lead in order

Jaycees, a title we are so proud to be! It all started back 30 years ago, when few of us aspired by the people that we met, as well as the spirits of JCI, we started the chapter - JCI Johor Bahru and sworn ourselves in this brotherhood of blue blood. Over the 30 years, it is delightful and proud to see great progress of this brotherhood. Emerging of new chapters, exponential growth in members, extraordinary projects carried; Thousands of young and energetic youth gathered not just for the betterment of their own life, yet making huge positive impacts to our society. JCI is and always is a great platform to nurture young active citizens and our next generation leaders. And I strongly believe JCI Johor Bahru 2020 president Andrew and his board of directors will surely carry the spirit of JCI and make big impact to our community. A president of a chapter has also been entrusted with the commitment in preserving continuity while embracing the ever changing environment. In fact, it is this exciting and dynamical experience that groom a person to be a leader. A year of presidency will eventually lead to a life time experience where young people are being groomed into a better person.

Another year had gone by, things are changing. New nation leaders, new governments, new companies, new businesses, new products, new fashion, new faces, new classmate, new colleague, new resolutions, new houses, new cars, new boss, new jobs, new leaders, and new president! New presidents! That’s the uniqueness of JCI where all presidents in JCI can only lead for a year. Being a chapter president with only one year to lead, is indeed the greatest challenge when one needs to achieve one’s plan of action within a year. This change has gone round and round ever since JCI was found.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate JC Andrew as the 30th president of JCI Johor Bahru. I want to congratulate the new board of directors for JCI Johor Bahru. I wish Andrew a successful year of presidency that, together with his new team, will bring JCI Johor Bahru into its new height that is filled with love, joy, laughters, and many successes. It’s been an honour to be invited to witness this auspicious event.

Everything is changing constantly. Even the hardest material like diamond is also undergoing changes. Only thing is that we may not notice the changes. A diamond that we see a day before will age by a day when we see it again today. In JCI, everyone is bound to undergo certain changes as we walk through our life in JCI. ABOUT 1915

Founding A Movement

By the age of 18, Henry Giessenbier Jr. formed the Herculaneum Dance Club, a social outlet for the community’s youth. Unknown at the time, Giessenbier was laying the foundation for what would become a global movement. On October 13, 1915, the first JCI Movement was founded when 32 men joined to form the Young Men’s Progressive Association (YMPCA) at the Mission Inn located in their hometown of St. Louis, USA.

The Young Men’s Civic Progressive Association members received acknowledgement from the broader community, however on November 30, 1915 official recognition of the organization was granted after enrolling as a member of the Mayor’s Conference of Civic Organizations. One year later, the YMPCA became known as the Junior Citizens and soon the Junior Chamber of Commerce, after affiliating with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce.

39

The First National Convention In June 1920, with 41 cities present, the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce held their first official convention, where their first constitution was adopted and the first President, Henry Giessenbier Jr., was elected. Giessenbier closed the ceremony with his expressed goals for the organization: “We have definitely launched a great institution into the world of progress. Let us hope that from this institution will emerge citizens of loftier ideals, higher privileges, greater opportunities, purer patriotism, broader ideas of service and greater capacity for happiness.” — Founder, Henry Giessenbier, Jr.

In 1926, after gaining Charles A. Lindbergh, commercial aviation pioneer, as a member, the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce pursued to expand aviation throughout the United States by working to establish and promote airport construction, encourage air mail usage and mark towns for easy identification from the air. That same year, the Get Out the Vote campaign was initiated in which the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce became the first national organization to conduct a systematic campaign to educate citizens of their civic duty to vote. As a result, 12 million more individuals voted in the 1928 election than in 1924.

On December 11, 1944, the Inter-American Congress was held in Mexico City. Representatives from the United States, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama gathered to officially establish Henry Giessenbier’s 24-year-old civic association as an international organization, Junior Chamber International.

JCI members partnered with Pan American Airlines during the 14th JCI World Congress to connect young active citizens with JCI members from around the world.

In 1965, Project Concern was started to administer dental and primary care to underprivileged individuals in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Mexico and the Appalachian Mountains in the United States. While the program grew internationally in 1965, it was started by JCI Hong Kong in 1962, spreading to other National Organizations before its international adoption.

In 1954, the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) granted JCI Special Consultative status, officially defining the supportive relationship between JCI and the UN. In the photo above, 1981 JCI President Gary Nagao visited with the UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim at the United Nations to discuss the long-standing partnership between the two organizations.

Starting in the 1980’s, organizational themes focused heavily on equality, internationalism and world peace in response to civil conflicts, assassination attempts and acts of terror as well as increasing global inflation and an oil and energy crisis. At the 1982 JCI World Congress in Seoul, South Korea, delegates skipped lunch to raise funds and support for disadvantaged populations on the North and South Korean border.

Opportunities for Women

Throughout the 1970’s, membership growth among women soared and in 1971 the first female National President was elected in Nepal.

Peace and Literacy for Children

The first Earth Run at the 1986 JCI World Congress promoted UNICEF and “Global Peace for Children.” Later, in the 1990s JCI officially established a partnership with UNICEF based on the organizations’ mutual commitment to protect and support children. In another project dedicated to child development, members of JCI Hong Kong established the first children’s library and provided mobile libraries to the Social Welfare Office in 1986.

1990

In 1989, JCI Presidents signed “The Independent” describing the fall of the Berlin Wall and presented it to JCI Germany.

Throughout the 1990’s, JCI and its long-time partner the United Nations organized JCI Day annually on December 11th at the UN to educate young people on global challenges and how their history of cooperation can inspire local collaborations.

This framework has been a guiding force behind grassroots projects around the world, resulting in sustainable solutions such as a medical camp in Bangladesh slums for expectant mothers lacking prenatal resources, community farming in the Dutch Caribbean, apprenticeships for unemployed youth in Europe and voter awareness campaigns across African nations.

2015

These 17 ambitious goals aim at achieving three extraordinary tasks: end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and combat climate change. During the 2015 JCI World Congress in Kanazawa, Japan, JCI leaders committed to advancing these goals by creating awareness, taking action on the goals most relevant in their communities and taking responsibility to hold JCI members as well as all sectors of society accountable to implement and monitor the progress of the Global Goals.

ABOUT President of JCI Malaysia JCI Senator Lee Kai Loong to President Wu San Ho (吳三和會長) of Newcastle Junior Chamber, Taiwan (台灣自強國際青年 商會), and it was a “love at first sight”. In August 1995, a sisterhood pact was officially signed with Newcastle Junior Chamber, Taiwan (currently known as JCI New Taipei), marking another historical moment of our chapter. At the very same year, JCI Senator Dato’ Dr. Tan Hian Tsin of Crocodile International was appointed the Patron of Jaycees Johor Bahru.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) Johor Bahru started in 1989 when JCI Senator Andrew Tiong Hock Seng from Seduan Jaycees bumped into his friends Medhi Goh and Wong Joon Hing at Johor Bahru, whom subsequently introduced the JC’s movement to them in their office at Jalan Serampang. It had been a life changing event since then. With Medhi Goh headed as the Protem Chairman, together with Gladys Wong, Ho Pak Cherng, Michael Chu, Bernard Khit, Chew Ah San, Y.P. Tan and Pang Chong Yong, the protem committee were established. The group received unreservedly help from JCI Senator Andrew Tiong and when he had to return to Sarawak, he introduced JCI Senator Randy Loo from JCI Kuala Lumpur West (KL West) who further assisted the movement.

In the year 2007, Past President JCI Senator Law Lee Kiau was elected as the National President of JCI Malaysia, marking the born of our very first National President. In the same period, after 11 years of friendship, President JCI Senator Amy Tan led the signing of another great sisterhood pact with President Daryl Liew of JCI City Singapore during the JCI Asia Pacific Annual Conference (ASPAC), marking a huge milestone that enlarged our international presence in the region.

On 9th October 1989, the Registrar of Society officially approved the chapter registration, marking the birth of Jaycees Johor Bahru. In the following year, JCI Senator Ho Pak Cherng was elected as the Chartered President. In the year 1995, President JCI Senator Gladys Wong was introduced by National
